CAMBRIDGE, MA - June 28 - The Progressive Government Institute (PGI), a non-partisan educational organization dedicated to ensuring transparency and accountability in the Executive branch of the federal government, today released the names of three individuals who it believes are well qualified to serve as Treasury Secretary. "When the voters head to the polls this November they have a right to know what kind of leadership to expect," said PGI Founder Dal LaMagna. "One of the most important measures of that leadership is the kind of people our President surrounds him or herself with, starting with the individuals named to serve in the Cabinet. PGI argues that presidential candidates should name Cabinet picks before the election, so that those decisions can be vetted by the electorate." "Economic issues continue to be a major concern for voters this election cycle," said PGI Executive Director Ted Carr. "The Treasury Secretary has a large role in developing monetary policy for an administration, and PGI belives that Jamie Galbraith, Joseph Stiglitz or Robert Reich would provide strong leadership and innovative policies in this position". The PGI recommends the following individuals for Treasury Secretary: - Jamie Galbraith: Director of the Inequality Program at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of numerous books and articles, including Created Unequal: The Crisis in American Pay.
- Joseph Stiglitz: Former Chief Economist for the World Bank and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
- Robert Reich: Former Labor Secretary in the Clinton Administration, author and professor at Brandeis University.
The Progressive Government Institute will be releasing progressive alternatives for all of the Cabinet positions in the next several weeks. To date, PGI has announced selections for Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Commerce, EPA Administrator and Director of the CIA.
