SAN FRANCISCO
- July 9 - Times may be tough for dot-coms, but one Web site that is flourishing just wants you to use your mouse to help animals. PETA, which has been nominated for Best Activist Site and People's Voice prizes at the Webby Awards (July 18 at the War Memorial Opera House), has used the Web to win some of its biggest campaigns:
PETA-online.org has creatively used the Internet to organize legions of online activists all over the world to help win campaigns to stop Gap Inc. from buying cruelly produced Indian leather and to pressure fast-food giants McDonald's and Burger King to vastly improve animal welfare standards.
PETA-online.org educates Web surfers about important animal issues by offering splashy features, which have included:
- An online poll to pick the sexiest celebrity vegetarian (Shania Twain narrowly edged out Drew Barrymore and Pamela Anderson).
- A "catty" worst-dressed list, which lashed out at fur-flaunting Star Jones, Sharon Stone, Kid Rock, and others.
- A racy spot, "Sex and the Kitty," which shows animatronic cats "getting down" to drive home an urgent spay/neuter message.
The Webbys, a.k.a. the Internet's Oscars, are organized by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. For more information, visit WebbyAwards.com. To check out PETA's Web site, log on to PETA-online.org.
