'Blockupy Frankfurt' Protesters Cleared From Camp During Anti-Austerity Demonstration
Occupiers at European Central Bank calling for democracy cleared by German police
Hundreds of protesters under the banner of Blockupy Frankfurt have been removed by German police today after staging a demonstration against austerity in front of the European Central Bank (ECB) headquarters in Frankfurt.
The group has called for four days of action including an occupation of financial districts and a blockade of the ECB and other banks, and for democracy everywhere.
Policy cleared the camp, carrying some of the protesters off, after the occupiers refused to leave the site.
In photos documenting the clearing of their camp, occupiers declare, "Living democracy is cleared."
Reuters reports that 5000 police including reinforcements from other areas have been deployed "to cope with the protests."
The Critical Legal Thinking blog, which is following the "blockupy" actions, reports that the financial districts in Frankfurt are now filled with checkpoints, and that individuals who are stopped by police and neither heed their warning nor produce sufficient documentation will be held in "preventative detention."
