Warming Arctic Forewarns Ecological Ruin
U.S. Coast Guard captain: "No one" is prepared to deal with a disaster in the Arctic
As Arctic waters warm and new passages are opened, increased human activity is set to bring new possibilites of environmental disasters.
With warming Arctic waters comes more destructive human activity. (photo: Subhankar Banerjee) Countries including the U.S., Russia, Norway and Canada are beefing up their military presence in the region as the possibilites of exploiting the vast mineral resources of the Arctic are increasing with the warming of the planet.
U.S. Coast Guard captain and military fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York Melissa Bert says, "I don't worry about a war in the Arctic. But I do worry that we're not prepared to deal with a major disaster there. No one is, but as more people go there, it becomes much more likely."
Following the Obama administration's approval of Shell's Arctic oil spill plan last week, environmental groups also foreshadowed ecological ruin if the company's Arctic drilling plans go through.
"If Shell goes there to drill, they will kill the Arctic Ocean along the way—we must fight and stop them," said Subhankar Banerjee, founder of ClimateStoryTellers.org.

Reuters: Melting Arctic may redraw global geopolitical map
"By bringing more human activity into the Arctic you bring both the good and the bad," Lt Gen Walter Semianiw, head of Canada Command and one of Ottawa's most senior military officers responsible for the Arctic, told an event at Washington DC think tank the Centre For Strategic and International Studies last week. "You will see the change whether you wish to or not." [...]
For U.S. Coast Guard captain [and military fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York Melissa] Bert, having spent much of her career in the north, the greatest real enemies remain the vast distances, harsh climate and lack of resources.
Even with the icecaps gone for some of the year, icebergs will still drift through shipping lanes and harsh storms and poor maps provide ever present danger.
"I don't worry about a war in the Arctic," she says. "But I do worry that we're not prepared to deal with a major disaster there. No one is, but as more people go there, it becomes much more likely.".

Common Dreams: Obama Admin Takes Steps Towards More Oil Drilling
Shell's oil spill plan for Beaufort Sea drilling approved, seismic surveys for oil off east coast get OK
The Obama administration has taken steps towards increased oil drilling today in Alaska and off the east coat. It approved Shell's oil spill response plan for the Arctic waters of the Beaufort Sea, a move slammed by environmental groups who warn of a likely environmental catastophe if Shell is given its final permits. The administration also allowed today seismic exploratory surveys for oil off the coast of Virginia in the Atlantic Ocean.
Shell's oil spill plan suggests little likelihood of a blowout and calls for a containment device like the one used in the Deepwater Horizon blowout to be clamped onto the well in the event that Shell's built-in blowout preventer failed.
"If Shell goes there to drill, they will kill the Arctic Ocean along the way—we must fight and stop them," says Subhankar Banerjee, founder of ClimateStoryTellers.org. [...]
Cindy Shogan, Executive Director of the Alaska Wilderness League, warned in a statement: "If President Obama fails to stop Shell from drilling in America’s Arctic Ocean he could be left with the next major drilling disaster on his hands and the destruction of one of our planet’s most vital ecosystems.”

Have you read the book Noah's Flood? by Ryan and Pitman? Sea level rise caused by Global Warming won't happen as rapidly, but it will be more calamatous, and we should begin to see the start of that calamity within 15-20 years as the atoll nations become submerged. One very vulnerable place to watch is Port Fourchon, Louisiana, which is the major VLCC offloading and oil rig servicing port being sunk by the effects of its activities. Indeed, the whole "boot" of Louisiana is worth visiting before it sinks beneath the rising waters.
It will not be decades befor sea levels rise by many feet, it could be within the next five to ten years, or even less than five.
However; we can forget about rising sea levels, the demise of the polar bears, drilling for oil in the Arctic and ruining the environment,,, there is only ONE pending issue.
Of course many here have heard this before from me, but I am not mistaken, the ONE pending issue which must be addressed first... That issue is the Arctic methane threat. That "Ticking Time Bomb" which is about ready to go off.
There are (*trillions*) of tons of methane gas safely locked up in the Arctic Ocean's sub sea permafrost. Anyone who denies that is a fool. When the sea ice melts the ocean water warms and the sub sea permafrost melts and the methane gas releases into the atmosphere. And again; anyone who denies or argues that is a fool.
It will not require a trillion or more tons of the methane gas entering our atmosphere to wipe us all out, just ten billion tons, a tiny fraction of the amount available there escaping will be far enough to cause the planet's temperature to rise so high, and so quickly, that life as we all understand life will not be possible. Some bacteria and perhaps some deep sea life will survive for awhile.
Whe will that happen? No one can or will give an exact date or a year, but it does not require any advanced science to clearly understand that when ice or permafrost melts, anything trapped in the ice or permafrost will be free.
Since the Arctic Ocean sea ice is projected by many top scientists to be mostly melted by 2015, three more years, we should all who are not fools, expect to see billions of tons of methane gas escaping from the thawing sub sea permafrost. That is by far the most dangerous (tipping point) to global warming.
So unless one is a fool, they should expect to see billions of tons of methane gas entering our atmosphere very soon and just three billion tons will cause very deadly global warming... Ten billion tons will probably be enough to eradicate most life on the planent and sea levels will rise by over 150 feet.... A trillion tons will kill the planet. Three or four trillion and Earth and Venus will likrly be twins.
So what is going to happen is; we will wait an watch that disaster occur, because no one in power is doing a damn thing to prevent it and most do not believe it is possible... Well it is not only possible, it is for certain to happen unless we take stong immediate world wide action to attempt to prevent it..... That's how it is, believe it or not.
Hi braithwa842,, you have a point about the timing, as it has taken about 60 years for the atmospheric Co2 levels to reach the 394 ppm range from the near 320 ppm.. The Methane however is a much different issue. Much different!
Consider that top level scientists are very concerned that AGW released 44 billion tons of Co2 last year... When a billion tons of methane gas releases in a year's time, it will be equivilent to 105 billion tons of Co2 added to the atmosphere's greenhouse effect, lots more than just 44 billion tons.
Methane, or natural gas, is very heavy and it tends to sink, but as it dissapates it slowly rises into the atmosphere and green plant life does not absorb any, as it does with Co2.
Due to the most recent studies by Drs. Semiletov and Shakova and many other earth scientists and geologists of the releasing methane from just (one small area) in the Arctic Ocean, I believe we might see that billion tons release this summer and far more release next year.
When three billion tone has released we will have global warming like we never have imagined... When near ten billion tons release, we will not be able to survive the heat on almost every location on the planet..
Then when it gets that hot, we should expect to see a trillion or trillins of tons release.... When that happened 50 to 55 million years ago,, almost all life died within a day or two... That actually could happen at any time now... We'll see;
However; I believe we have a chance to prevent it from happening if we act very soon to reverse what we are doing, but I'm afraid that won't happen... There are too many ignorant and actually stupid Rush Limbaw types in charge. And no one wants to hear such dire predictions, so it is easily denied. We canot see it occuring like we could witness an incoming massive asteroid.
If I were the King of Earht, which I am not, there would be no more burning any coal for starters, none... No more trees cut down and billions of trees planted. Aircraft flights would be very restricted, emergency flights only... Biodegradable hemp would be used for cloth, paper, and platics. along with 5,000 other commercial uses, no chemical fertalizers or pest control would be allowed., no fracking, no deep water oil drilling, no nuclear reactors, All that for (starters).
It would screw up the world economy, but save the planet and life on the planet. We have to establish priorities,,,,, if we have any common sense that is.

"An interview with Duane Elgin by Carter Phipps, What is Enlightenment? Magazine, Spring/Summer 2001
"What does awakening look like as it moves into the world? Our entire future may depend on how we answer this question, on how effectively we are able to bring a spiritual perspective to bear on the urgent global challenges faced by our awakening species at this decisive juncture in our evolutionary journey."

The Self-Guiding Evolution of Civilizations
By Duane Elgin, Systems Research and Behavioral Science Journal (affiliated with AAAS and UNESCO).
"Because the impact of humanity is now global, that is the scale at which we are challenged to become reflective if we are to be choiceful about our common future. The vehicle of collective attention at a civilizational scale is the mass media, particularly broadcast television.
"If civilizations are to realize their potential for reflective consciousness and become self-guiding in their evolution, then it is vital for the public to mobilize the public’s airwaves on behalf of the public interest."
