Japanese Govt Kept Secret Worst-Case Scenario Post-Fukushima
Information "was so shocking," would frighten the public
After the Japanese government was presented with a worst-case scenario by Japan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Shunsuke Kondo in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster, they kept the report secret because "it was so shocking" and would frighten the public, according to a report from Kyodo news.
Kyodo reports:
After the document was shown to a small, select group of senior government officials at the prime minister's office in late March, the administration of then Prime Minister Naoto Kan decided to quietly bury it, the sources said.
"When the document was presented (in March), a discussion ensued about keeping its existence secret," a government source said.
In order to deny its existence, the government treated it as a personal document of Japan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Shunsuke Kondo, who authored it, until the end of December, the sources said.
It was only then that it was actually recognized as an official government document, they said.
"The content was so shocking that we decided to treat it as if it didn't exist," a senior government official said.
A private-sector panel investigating the disaster at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant intends to examine whether the government tried to manipulate information during its handling of the crisis.
Goshi Hosono, the nuclear crisis minister, said earlier this month that the public wasn't informed of the content of the scenario over fears it "would cause unnecessary anxiety."
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) recently recently video from an endoscope pushed into one of the reactors at Fukushima:

Show AllThe same is true of all the lies that follow below this point by WayneWR such as that the EPA was 'shocked' at the levels of radioactivity here in the US and surpressed its data from the public view.
WayneWR has been claiming all along that a single atom of Cesium-137 or of Plutonium inhaled has a virtual certainly of causing cancer. Then when we challenge him on that exaggeration he misquotes both me and John Ianetta by claiming we denied that there was any risk regardless of how many radioactive atoms are inhaled.
So it goes without end...there is no point in discussing Fukushima with him or several other scare-mongers who ply their trade here. Instead of discussing the facts they allege the John and I are here because we are being paid by the NRC or some other US governmental agency. I can only speak for myself; I am not on the payroll of any US agency. Describing me a 'shill' and a 'troll' doesn't deal with the issues on the table, no matter how often it is posted here.
That is a lie and you are a proven liar. I have stated many times that a (single) isotope of inhaled cesium 136 or Pu can and it may cause cancer.
I have also many times stated that it is unlikely a person will (only) inhale (one) single isotpe of the deadly poison... It is far more likely they will inhale many if they are in an area where the deadly isoptpse have been released. or where they have been taken by wind currents.
You on the other hand RFinston, have stated many times that isoptopes or "atoms" you prefer to call them, of cesium or Pu in a person's body, cannot ratiate body cells and cause cancer, but you refuse to post a link for an article that will back up your claims.
Your sidekick, ~John Iannetta~ has repeatedly posted the same lies and you both state that cesium or Pu isotopes cannot lodge in the lungs and they do not stay in the body for longer than about 70 days.... All lies.
http://www.bt.cdc.gov/radiation/isotopes/pdf/plutonium.pdf
Quotes for the article about plutonium ... "Because it emits alpha particles it is most dangerous when (*inhaled*)… When plutonium particles are inhaled they (*lodge*) in the lung tissue… Pu can also enter the blood stream from the lungs… Once it circulates through the body it (*concentrates*) in the bones, liver and spleen, exposing those organs and the kidneys and blood to alpha particles.
They are especially damaging because they transfer relatively large amounts of ionizing energy to living cells.".... Cancer can and may result.
http://www.radonseal.com/radon-health.htm
From that article.. (" Even allowing for a substantial degree of cell repair, the passage of a (*single*) alpha particle, has the potential to trigger cancerous growth of cells that it does not kill outright.
I was hoping we could finally convince the (pick a pair) to leave and not return, like ~Mark Abram~ finally did... Or, leave and return with (new) names.. Maybe "Reverand" Johnny, or "Reverand" Finkey, or Lion Funny Finnee? No quick reply from Finey yet.. He's gotta get help to figure out an answer that won't sound totally stupid.
according to TEPCO's release the camera was inserted horizontally into the contanment vessel at about the elevation of the number 30 or 32 on this figure:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Reaktor.svg
the RPV (orange vessel) qutie a distance from the insertion point. the fuel melted, and dropped to the bottom of the RPV, melted through and has fallen some 2 stories to below the number 19 and 13 on the above figure.
further, the lens on the camera is an ultra wide angle, so you cant see very far with it. all they have shown on the video are clips of the piping betweeen the RPB and inner CV wall. the camera never got close to the RPV in the video sample.
Reactor 2 has the lowest radiation measurments of the 3.
here's a link showing what the various camera angles are showing. note this schematic shows a wall between the camera and the RPV, so if that is indicative of the design of this unit, its not surprising that no fuel was observed.
http://ajw.asahi.com/article/0311disaster/fukushima/AJ201201200044
as a side note the full video inspection lasted about 70mins long, and they used 34 techs to get it. that means the "shifts" were about 2 mins each.
Two weeks ago they said they could not even get a robot in there after their "cold shutdown", so I didn't believe Tepco.... Guess they were just talking about unit's one and three... Thank you very much for the important information.
That video was most likely filmed (prior) to the (total) meltdowns TEPCO officials have acknowledged, of the three reactor's cores, when it would no longer be possible to get a robot or a camera within 200 yards of the three destroyed reactors.
And yes; my purpose here is to attempt to put you and John Iannetta in a "cold shutdown".
Tepco officials say it's (*recent*)... Must be... I didn't "fabricate" anything, I offerd my opinion on the video... Anyway RFinston; above here, GottaGetOfftheGrid has shot your attempts to distort the issue on the video down in flames.
Hmmm. Does the reporter really believe this is how the world works?
This mess is going to be with us, our children and our grandchildren to the seventieth generation and beyond. (if there are any left)
The atomic industry shills did a great job in the media convincing the public that only a small amount of harmless radiation leaked out - nothing to worry your silly little heads about - go shopping, furgedaboudit!
Having just witnessed how the BP spill in the Gulf Of Mexico was 'managed' - I pretty much knew TEPCO would pull this off without a hitch.
No, dear stupid, scientifically illiterate USans, the earthquake triggered the tsunami.
No, the earthquake triggered the tsunami.
However; that should not detract from the issue here, that governments lie to protect big business, such as the nuclear industry, or BP and other such corrupt, greedy, stupid, inhuman and destructive creeps.
must admit i don't know an actinoid from a hemorrhoid, but i do know that "we the people" need to grasp that our "experts" and "officials" are only human after all.
And on the Common Dreams news website, the NRC possibly, or perhaps some other government agency, have two professional writers post comments to downplay the hazards of anyone who inhaled or injested radioactive isotopes of cesium or putonium which came from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The pair of self described radiation hazard experts, explained over and over and over, for the past ten months, how those deadly human created poisons, were no more harmful than the (natural) radiaton we receive every second of our life from cosmic rays, or from the food and water we consume, or from radon, etc. In fact they say radon may be more hazardous than inhaling isotopes of cesium or Pu.
The pair of experts explained that even a single isotope of inhaled radioactive poisons like radon, cesium, plutonium, etc, could not lodge in a person's lung and cause body cells to become cancerous and all chemicals which enter a human body are ejected within days and there was absolutly no health hazard from inhaling cesium 137 or Pu.
At the moment, I don't recall the names the two CDs radiation experts use when posting their medical information and advice, writing things like "internal isotopes of cesium or Pu could not cause body cells to become cancerous, no matter how many were inhaled."
I think the names they use are Johnny Dufus and Ronnie Fink, or flunky... Something like that... Thank goodness they have been here to insure none of us were ever scared.
However; for a few good reasons, a few of us here at CD believe the pair of experts are expert (*liars*) and not radiation hazard experts,,, because they are absolutly wrong about inhaled radioactive isotopes of cesium, Pu or others, which (will lodge) in the lungs and or, enter the blood stream and radiate internal body cells until they may become cancerous.
And any single isotope is just as deadly as any other isotope of cesium or Pu... But two inhaled is worse than one and three is worse thn two and so on. But don't be concerned, our EPA and our two CD experts says it's not an issue.
I didn't expect to see either show up here, as I thought they had canoed to Japan to let the people who were evacuated from their homes near Fukushima, know they could go home now,,, because they never should have been evacuated,,, because there is no health dangers of radiation from the trillions of isotopes of released cesium 134, 137 or plutonium and the other deadly poisons... But guess not ,, he's still here... Makes me want to pee my pants.
Quotes... "Children are known to be more radio-sensitive than adults... Analysis of Hiroshima victims showed a higher incidence of lung cancer among those who were exposed to the radiation blast as children."
"Even a (single) alpha particle can cause major genomic changes to the cell's DNA, including mutation and transformation. Since these effects take place in a random manner at the cellular level, there is no such thing as a "harmless dose."
"Even allowing for a substantial degree of cell repair, the passage of a (single alpha) particle has the potential to trigger cancerous growth of cells that it does not kill outright."
Usually by the time obvious symptoms of lung cancer develop, such as coughing or spitting up blood, the cancer can be the size of an orange and the lung must be removed... So with only one lung remaining, the victem lives the remander of their life with only one lung... Both lungs? Well, don't bother investing in an IRA.
It is also common for cancerous body cells to break off and travel through the blood stream and lodge in other body organs, the liver, brain, bones, etc and set up another cancer factory in the body.
To prevent such an occurrance, do not inhale any cesium or Pu isotopes.
For the past several years the average (annual) death rate due to cancer in the United States is over half a million, (500,000+). Some years near (700,000)... Several million more cancer victems are treated for the disease annually who do not die, but suffer a lot of misery and medical expenses.
Many must declare bankruptsy due to medical expenses they cannot possibly pay and some required prescription drugs cost more than a person earns. So buying their prescription drugs in Mexico or Canada and becoming a drug smuggler is not uncommon.
Cancer is now the highest cause fo death for children by far, due to medical reasons. In adition; many children are treated for cancer but do not die from it until several years after they are considered to be adults, or over the age of 18, when the cancer which was termed "in remission" returned and killed them.
The dramatic increase in cancer has co-incided with the increased use of nuclear power and the many accidents with nuclear power plants, where radioactive isotopes of a variety of deadly radioactive poisons were released into the atmosphere. The nuclear cartel has very well proven they cannot (safely) operate nuclear power plants or (safely) store nuclear waste for even 60 years, much less for many thousands of years which will be necessary to store or hide it.
We must have a massive program initiated by our gvernment to replace all nuclear and fossil fuel power plants with geothermal and solar energy and we have to do that soon,,, very soon!
The coal fired plants must go first to try to reverse the soon to arrive (*runaway, irreversible*) global warming and the acidification of our oceans... We either do it, or we die... "We" is everybody... It can be done and it must be done... But I am not holding my breath, because our government leaders are stupid, or corrupt, or both.
The government hid it because it would scare people into rejecting nuclear power. That makes the position taken by WayneWR seem reasonable and rational, while RFinston seems to have gone off on the kumbaya trail with those would don't care if they destroy the earth and all life on it.
It was an API news item also but I cannot find it on the web now either Tom, someone has zapped it... But we can find web articles where the new Prime Minister of Japan says they had not been putting out proper information about the Fukushima disaster and they are working to improve that sorryass fault.
We do not know the date when that video was filmed.
RFinston is (fully aware), that TEPCO officials have long ago stated that all three of the six operatioanl reactor's cores had melted through their stainless steel containment vessels.
What is not known for certain is, if the now molten lava cores have melted down through the basement's concrete floors and are now in the ground polluting the ground water and ocean with radioactive poisons.
No one, not even a robot can get near them to find out what is actually occurring... We do know another heavy earthquake aftershock near there will most likely cause spent fule rod ponds to melt down and that would be worse than the melted down reactor cores.
Normally one aftershock of (one less) magnitude will occur at any time within a year after the initial earthquake,,, That has not as yet happened. There has been a magnitude 7 aftershock, but not a magnitude 8.
There is more plutonium in the Fukushima plant's spent fuel rod ponds than would be in 12,000, 20 megaton hydrogen bombs.
Now we are talking "worst case" scenerios, or a ~Nevil Shute's fictional novel "On The Beach" becoming reality and (not) fiction... Sorry for not being "optomistic", I favor reality and real possibilities when dealing with dealdy important issues.
Take a break/give it a rest/let go of it. I promise not to offer any more than my one earlier comment and this one, so how about shutting up and letting others have a say?
On the question of the melt-through, I thought we weren't believing anything that Tepco said. There is an underlying nuclear engineering basis for the likelihood that the #2 reactor didn't have sufficient stored radioactive fission product heat to go through a complete meltdown and therefore not a breach of its vessel. So time will tell what actually happened.
The amount of Plutonium is irrelevant qua nuclear bomb equivalence, Wayne. You don't get a nuclear bomb unless you have a prompt critical chain reaction and that is not possible in a light-water moderated reactor which has been structurally damaged. So let's put that scare to rest as well, O.K.?
If you don't like to see my comments, just play with your mouse and don't read them. No one forces you to do so.
Hey, you never have told us if you are male or female... Just askin out of curiosity, don't really give a rip... I think you are a male, most females aren't so stupid, obtuse, dishonest and ignorant... Just my opinion there.
learning, that's what life's about, really.
THANKS!
~RFinston~ says the number 2 core hasn't melted through the containment vessel, but in November Tepco officials finally admitted all three had, so the "recent" video was probably shot prior to that happening... How recent? Ask Tepco. The last we heard a couple of weeks ago, even a robot can't get near the buildings.
And exploded hydrogen or atomic bombs are not required for trillions of deadly microspcoic or gaseous plutonium or cessium isotopes to be released into the atmosphere, as has already been well proven by the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters.
A major difference is, there was a hell of a lot less put into the atmosphere by Chernobyl than is readily available for release at Fukushima.
RFinston says he/she has quit posting here... That is because he/she cannot argue the facts presented in any intelligent manner... Next pro nuker up to bat? __ We'll see, probably RFinston... Hopefully none.
I agree, the report should be out here for us to make up our own scared to shit minds.
My apologies to the cursephobics
RFinstona and his partner John Iannetta and I go back ten months here and the pair has lied about the danger of radiation poisoning continually with hundreds of posted comments,,, so I have (a lot) to say on that subject.
I notice you do not... Did you bother to open and read the links I offered? What is your opinion on the issue of melted down nuclear power plants and the deadly dangers they present? __ Or do you just off topic ramble on, like you are doing here? __ Just askin Stonepig.
I BTW did go back and read everything. I actually have a friend who knows a Russian astro/pysics/atomic/nuclear??? and he too was scammed by the Japanese scientists and government.
I appreciate the work of educating people on this stuff. I was feeling very sad about the state of my world and wishing we could all be safe. It really isn't too much to ask.
Re: Kumbaya: "The song was originally associated with human and spiritual unity, closeness and compassion, and it still is, but more recently it is also cited or alluded to in satirical or cynical ways which suggest false moralizing, hypocrisy, or naively optimistic views of the world and human nature.[1]" That quote made me want to throw up. To take an African native song and subvert it to that lower level just makes my skin crawl.
Who the fuck are we?
Robert gave us one of the premier writers to learn from, Helen Caldicott. You must educate yourself so you can speak or write intelligently (would be nice) to the courts, the local governments, etc. We don't have a piece of crap nukebomb electric plant sitting in my backyard because Caldicott students, readers of, took their bitch to the local governments and won.
I don't always agree with the yackers' comments but it is important to learn. Sorry, but it is a requirement on that 'kumbaya' path.
