BREAKING: Calls Needed Now to Obama to Stop Keystone XL Pipeline
It all comes down to Barack Obama.
As I type this, Big Oil’s representatives in the House and Senate are pushing legislation that would rush approval of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Up until now, President Barack Obama has stood strong, threatening to reject any bill that includes the pipeline.
But in the last hour, some terrible news has begun to leak from Washington, D.C.—President Obama seems to be on the verge of caving on Keystone. There’s no way to sugarcoat it—if the president allows Keystone to move forward, he will be failing the single biggest environmental test of his presidency.
The next few hours will be absolutely crucial—the president needs to hear from you that cutting a back-room deal with Big Oil on Keystone XL is unacceptable. If he steps up and threatens to veto this bill, he can stop this pipeline in its tracks.
Watch the US Senate debate the Keystone XL amendment on C-SPAN 2.
Can you make a call right away? Here’s the White House number—202-456-1111.
Feel free to say what you want on the call, but remember to drive this one message home—to keep his promises, President Obama needs to veto legislation that would rush approval of Keystone XL. This pipeline is a threat to our climate and jobs and needs to be stopped.
After you’ve called the White House, take 30 seconds to let us know how it went by clicking here.
(Don’t worry if you get a busy signal—it’s actually a good sign—it means we’ve flooded the White House switchboard and that the movement is sending an overwhelming message to the president. Just keep on trying until you get through.)
President Obama came into office promising to “end the tyranny of oil.” This is his chance to prove he was serious. If he’s not, he needs to know right now that there will be real consequences.
Big Oil cut a back-room deal with the dirtiest Members of Congress to attach this legislation to a must-pass tax cut bill. These kinds of deals exemplify the tyranny Big Oil exercises over our government, and underscores why the president needs to threaten a veto.
We have just a few hours to convince him to stand strong and veto any legislation to rush the Keystone pipeline. Can you make a call right now and tell him that we expect nothing less? Here’s the number again—202-456-1111
Your calls right now are absolutely crucial, and you should also be getting ready to get back into the streets in the days and weeks to come. We’re dusting off our plans to go to Obama 2012 offices and raise some ruckus. Call the White House, but also get in touch with your friends to start plotting your next steps locally.
Thanks to you, this fight isn’t over yet—not by a long shot.

Show AllAnyone honestly concerned with working people, the elderly or the young would just veto the whole thing, the stealth defunding of Social Security and the disastrous enabling of tar sands exploitation. There is no real conflict there for Obama, only manufactured conflict designed to let him and the D party do two evil things at one time and still make claim to having a conscience and concern about the 99%.
Call the White House immediatedly at 202-456-1111. And your local Congress critters too. Let them know we understand exactly what is going on.
jc, I ain't callin' no stinkin' white house. Been there, done that. When are you going to understand that POTUS isn't listening and doesn't care about you. I think you need to revisit George Carlin, find the nearest occupy, and reread "1984".
What are you going to do RF? What should we all do? This is a question that Tar Sands Action and others are going to have to deal with for the next 60 days.
I know that calling the Pres is probably futile, but if nobody calls the White House, then it looks like nobody is watching, nobody cares. It is demoralizing for activists to do nothing, to sense an evaporation of a movement. Calling is a desperate measure that helps to assess strength, precedes and builds up to something more meaningful. Hope you will participate.
"President Obama came into office promising to “end the tyranny of oil.” This is his chance to prove he was serious. If he’s not, he needs to know right now that there will be real consequences."
What consequences? Defeat in 2012? Not a chance. Obama has been so good to the 1% they're definitely going to keep him around for another term. If a Republican president did what Obama has done, there would be a helluva lot more people protesting in the streets.
"As I type this, Big Oil’s representatives in the House and Senate are pushing legislation that would rush approval of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline." Representatives invited in - by who? "Caving"? Or just being the same sleezy two-faced liar he has been?
OK, now I'll call that number...
I won't call him. If he doesn't know how to vote on this one, he shouldn't be president.
so what are we going to do about it if it becomes a reality...
i called, my brief comment was
"obama cannot give up on the keystone pipeline"
Of course he is going to sign off on the Pipeline. If not now, next time.
What a waste of space.
So, what are we going to do about it if it becomes a reality? I should say, if/when it passes
Polls show most repondents in favor of building the pipeline, most respondents of the opinion that it can be built without harming the environment (!), and only 1/4 to 1/3 of respondents opposed to building the pipeline.
Obama was clearly stalling in order to placate both his supposed "progressive base" and this supposed majority of Citizens.
Folks opposed to this project need to realize that they just haven't talked enough people onto their side yet, and that the real battle is not for His Imperial Majesty's mind, but on the ground during construction.
Flash--- Obama will postpone his decision until after the election. Once he's elected he can give up the charade of caring what the people think. The pipeline will be approved.
i called at 5:50pm est and reached a recording claiming that the president wanted to hear my comment but the office hours are 9am--5pm monday through friday est....REALLY???????? we must call back on monday....that about tells the story........anyone have an alternative number?
the same thing happened to me... but i did sign the petition on line.

Funny but I heard last week that Obama had Already agreed to approve the XL pipeline in return for an extension of the payroll tax.
Possibly a foregone conclusion masquerading as a drawn out congressional fight....
This Washington dc thing is getting more and more like professional wrestling every day.
Don't drag pro wrassl'in into this. It might tarnish their image.
OMG....that was great!!!!! Ha ha!!!
It's odd I've called twice and was hung up on after asking the information officer if president obamas opinion was based on fact, could she tell me his opinion on the keystone pipeline? (before this question i asked her what her job was, she said it was dealing in giving out facts...) so much for transparency, or maybe that was the answer I was looking for...proud to be an American:)
Oh! For Christ sake!! When will we be rid of these Obamabot suckers, who continue to think that this shill for the greedy-rich gives two shits about them? This pipeline is a forgone conclusion--the fix has been in for months.
I would / will do something else as soon as we figure out what. I agree that these calls are probably futile, but for tonight, that's what there is. Even more futile is doing absolutely nothing, stopping fighting. Any suggestions?
So, what are we/you going to do about it when it happens?
I just found this monkey wrench in my garage. I know it's good for something, but I'm not too mechanically inclined. Does anybody remember what this thing is used for?
I already have stopped acting like the two-party system works and will continue to actively support Socialist/Green agendas.
Oh i just wanted to voice my opinion I've never believed the corporatist president was anything but....
The number I called was 202-456-1414 talked to them they are enjoyable people
Time to occupy the white house phone line...
Isn't it also hard to come to terms with the fact that we, USA, live in a military dictatorship?
Good luck !
Obomber is an oreo corporate whore with a big grin on his face.
Obama is actually half "white".
He isn't just "black on the outside, white on the inside."
Just heard on an AM news station Bummer caved and they have their pipeline and NO tax increases.
You must do much more than have the President veto the pipeline if you want to prevent further use of petroleum products. A pipeline will be built and more and more tar sands will be mined and processed as it is Canada's decision not America's. Both China and Japan are waiting in the wings to buy whatever production is available when the US decides it doesn't want it. No, you have to convince the Canadian government that it doesn't need the extra foreign dollars or export revenues from the productiona and sale of such products.
Go for it, Mr. President, maybe it'll piss off your base enough that there might actually be consequences. I won't hold my breath.
You are assuming that there will be an election in 2012. Maybe POTUS knows something we don't know?
My turn. Spin it as you desire, the bottom line is that President Obama makes decisions based on the Preamble to the Constitution: "...in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..." Because the POTUS is Democratic, this has little bearing on his decisions. President Obama is for ALL Americans, every single one of you too! Rather nice, don't you think? Very contrary to the repub/tparty vein of, For ME, not thee.
Could you translate that to English?
translation: "ignorant as dirt"
"It all comes down to Barack Obama". Then you have to know it is a done deal!
The mantra; especially from the Repugs, that we hear over and over and over again ad nauseum is: AMERICA NEEDS THE JOBS! AMERICA NEEDS THE JOBS! When in hell have they ever cared about the jobs for average Americans? Kinda reminds me of the non-existent WMD's in Iraq or that Saddam Hussien was culpable for 911.
How come the Repigs don't agree that solar and alternative energy industry creates jobs?
People who believe that Obama and the corrupt right wing democrats especially in the Senate will not quickly approve this pipeline after next elections are as dumb as the dumbest republicans they enjoy making fun of. They still don't understand that the democrats are as corrupt as the republicans and that Obama is lying to them again.
