Obama Says He'd Agree to Millionaires Tax
WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama said Thursday that he would agree to a surtax on millionaires instead of other tax increases to finance his proposed jobs bill, as his fellow Democrats in the Senate suggest.
Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett smiles at the New York Stock Exchange before ringing the opening bell on September 30, 2011 in New York City. U.S. President Barack Obama's new plan for a higher tax rate for millionaires has been dubbed the "Buffett Rule" in reference to the billionaire investor, who supports the plan. (Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images) "The approach that the Senate is taking I'm comfortable with," he said during a news conference in the East Room of the White House. "I'm fine with the approach they're taking."
However, Obama added that he wants more than the $447 billion in revenue needed to pay for the jobs bill, suggesting that he would still want other tax increases as he's proposed to help reduce long-term budget deficits.
The president called the hastily arranged news conference as the Senate nears a vote next week on his proposed American Jobs Act. Senate Democrats don't have enough votes to pass the bill.
Senate Democrats on Wednesday proposed a 5 percent surtax on taxable income above $1 million as a way to finance the bill, hoping that would be easier to sell to wavering Democrats and some Republicans.
The surtax, which would start in 2013, would replace Obama's proposed tax increases on annual incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families.
In the Senate, 60 votes are needed to cut off extended debate and bring the bill to a final vote. Democrats control 53 of the 100 seats.
Responding to questions Thursday, the president said he would be willing to talk with Republicans about the bill and how to pay for it. "The bottom line is this: Our doors are open," Obama said.
But he said he had tried to bargain with congressional Republicans for more than two years without success.
"I have gone out of my way in every instance, sometimes at my own political peril ... to work with Republicans," he said.
"Each time, what we've seen is games playing, a preference to try to score political points ... on the part of the other side."
He said he would continue to travel around the country to rally support for the bill and put pressure on its opponents.
"The reason I keep going around the country talking about this jobs bill is because people really need help right now. The economy needs a jolt right now," he said.
"If we don't act, the opposite will be true: There will be fewer jobs; there will be weaker growth. Any senator who's thinking about voting against ... needs to explain exactly why."
If he can't win congressional approval of the entire bill, he said, he would break it up and ask for votes on each section, such as a proposed extension and expansion of a one-year cut in the payroll tax, or spending for public works.
"We will put forward maybe piece by piece each component of the bill," he said.
On other matters:
-He said he had "complete confidence" in Attorney General Eric Holder.
Holder is under fire for telling Congress that until recently he hadn't known about the "Fast and Furious" firearms sting, in which federal agents stood by as illegal guns wound up in the hands of Mexican drug dealers. But CBS reported that Holder knew about the program last year.
Obama said he hadn't known about the program and that Holder said he didn't know about it either.
-The president defended the overall policy of helping alternative energy companies, despite his administration's role in controversial loan guarantees for Solyndra, a solar energy that went bankrupt.
"If it was a risk-free proposition, then we wouldn't have to worry," he said of loan guarantees. "The overall portfolio has been successful."

Show AllPoor Obama, it is too little, too late. In baseball they fire the manager and let one of coaches finish out the year. Biden might have what it takes to right the ship and give us some direction
Who even watches baseball anymore?
"Biden might have what it takes to right the ship and give us some direction."
You're joking, right?

A farce! Who can read through it?
I am somewhat confused by those on CD that say Obama is such a corporate shill, when he has consistently said that he supports higher taxes on the richest people and corporations throughout his time in office. He has bent over backwards trying to negotiate in good faith with the Republicans, and they have rebuffed every attempt. I have not agreed with 100% of his policy choices or strategies, however he is the one of the only people it seems is actually trying to solve our problems with collective and equitable solutions. Fellow CDers I am sure I will be crucified here for my opinions, but I will vote for him again in 2012.
"he is the one of the only people it seems is actually trying to solve our problems with collective and equitable solutions."
You're kidding, right?
No I am not kidding. What have the Republicans offered of substance? I notice you people always let them off the hook without a peep. Sod Off!
The "people" to whom you refer are usually paid trolls (e.g. Koch-heads) who come to this site - among others - to trash Obama in the childish belief that doing so will bolster republican chances in future elections. They obviously don't understand the makeup of CD readers.
The real Progressives in these threads do not exclude the republicans when issuing condemnations.

"The real Progressives in these threads do not exclude the republicans when issuing condemnations."
The real progressives condemn both parties as collaborators in the problems besetting the 99% of us.
Thank you quickstepper and corvo. Now I don't have to point it out.
Obama supports higher taxes on the rich only when he knows those taxes have no chance of passing Congress.
Obama will say anything but when it comes to action he is a Corporatist and therefore an enemy of the 99%, despite what Democratic Elites in denial say.
Occupy Wall Street and the 99% insurgency all over the USA is having an effect, at least in rhetorical feints.
Obama and the neoLiberal Democrats know that there is a tremendous
anger focused now through the Occupy Together protests against their coddling of Wall Street...
We need to maintain the pressure...
If they raise the taxes on these SOBs, they in turn will raise the cost of natural resources, and their goods and services. Ultimately there has to be a more creative way to deal with the greed mentality of those controlling the cost of most everything. Not sure what that creative way would be, but just from experience if they have a new cost factor (taxes), they just add that into the price.
"Ultimately there has to be a more creative way to deal with the greed mentality of those controlling the cost of most everything."
Imprisonment?
Maybe imprisonment as a secondary consideration, lefttown.
Nationalization of their industries will enrich the national treasury, and that will enable us to pay off the national debt and provide jobs on government projects to restore crumbling infrastructure and improve social services.
And to those who would argue that capitalist greed is necessary to start up risky new enterprises let's remember that it is always government money that originally finances the riskiest of enterprises, such as new war machines and space exploration just to name a few, and it is only after these enterprises are profitable that ownership is transferred to private enterprise.
Since the government has the ability to manage the greatest of enterprise risk, it certainly has the ability to manage lesser enterprise risk, so capitalist greed is unnecessary as a motivating factor for economic advancement. And if risk is financed with the people's money, then the people own the enterprise, and a transfer of these enterprises to private ownership is theft.
There is no reason to transfer these industries to private ownership, or for private ownership to exist. Capitalism is a superfluous entity imposed upon the people by the ruling plutocracy.
Capitalists are exactly as necessary to a properly functioning economy as foxes are to a properly functioning hen house.
Nationalize our financial system, and our collective Resources.
"If they raise the taxes on these SOBs, they in turn will raise the cost of natural resources, and their goods and services."
Your reasoning is a bit suspect. Still, the millionaires' tax would be levied against individuals, not corporations.
q
The "millionaires' tax" won't be levied at all.
Obama doesn't have the slightest intention of putting this tax in place. He is well aware that he can't even get it past his own Democrats, let alone the Republicans.
Its reelection blather by the campaigner in chief.
jessia: "If they raise the taxes on these SOBs, they in turn will raise the cost of natural resources, and their goods and services."
If they raise taxes on these SOBs (corporations AND the wealthy), they will TRY to raise the cost of natural resources, and their goods and services, but how successful will that be when there's so little demand in the economy? When the unemployed are pinching their pennies, and even the employed are debt-ridden?
Can people start commenting yet on what's going on with Obama's zeal to destroy the 15 year old medical pot system undertaken by the citizens of Cali? Seriously CommonDreams, why are you not covering this ? This all goes together you know. They are about to throw progressives and small company persons under the damn bus because the Brother-In-Cheif wants to appeal to backwards reactionary voters who loathe pot and pot smokers and always have. Barry was no friend to the medical marijuana community to begin with, but he didn't come after them quite like this! http://www.kcra.com/r/29413933/detail.html and this one http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2011-10-07/medical-marijuana-crackdown/50685362/1 HOW IS THIS BETTER THAN BUSH?!?! THESE PEOPLE WILL BE IN JAIL, HOW IS THIS BETTER!!!!?!?!? THEIR LIVES WILL BE TORMENTED AND RUINED, HOW?!? HOW IS THIS BETTER?!?!?!
