Cheney Praises Strike, But Seeks Apology
Former Vice President Dick Cheney praised the Obama administration Sunday for ordering the drone strike that killed Anwar al-Awlaki, calling it "a very good strike" and "justified."
Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, Liz Cheney. (CNN) But Cheney and his daughter Liz, who appeared together on CNN's "State of the Union" said President Barack Obama owes the Bush administration an apology.
They said the killing of an American citizen without due process calls into question the president's past criticisms of the Bush administration for using enhanced interrogation techniques.
"The thing I am waiting for is for the administration to go back and correct something they said two years ago, when they criticized us for quote overreacting to the events of 9/11," Dick Cheney said. "They in effect said we had walked away from our ideals, taking policy contrary to our ideals when we had enhanced interrogation techniques. They have clearly moved in the direction of taking robust action when they feel it is justified. In this case, it was. They need to go back and reconsider what the president said in Cairo."
"He said in his Cairo speech (in 2009) for example that he banned torture," Dick Cheney said. "We were never torturing anyone in the first place. He said We walked away from our basic fundamental ideals. That simply wasn't the case. What he said then was inaccurate especially now in light of what they are doing with policy."
Liz Cheney added: "He slandered the nation, and I think he owes an apology to the American people. Those are the policies that kept us safe"
But Dick Cheney said Obama was justified in ordering such an attack, even when it involves an American citizen.
"The president has all the authority he needs to order this kind of strike," Cheney said. "It's the difference between a law enforcement action and a war. We're in a war."
Liz Cheney also praised the administration, but leveled similar criticism of the president's Cairo speech.
"What concerns me is the damage this president has done," Liz Cheney said. "The extent to which when the president of the United States goes on, on foreign soil, saying the United States has abandoned American values ... when he does that, he does real damage to our standing in the world."

Show AllHow sick are these people?
Dick Cheney continues to prove that he gave up being a human being a long time ago. He is the personification of the evil of the neo-cons.
Cheney's battery-run plastic heart keeps ticking. - Someone EMP him!
The Cheney's are justified in demanding that Obama apologize to Team Dubya for criticizing them and then proving during the past three years that Team Dubya and Team Obama are kindred spirits.
Obama also owes an apology to those who voted for him in 2008 believing that he was somehow different than Dubya.
Love means never having to say you're sorry...... ;-)
Love means never having to leave money on the pillow.
...and actions speak louder than words.
I must admit I first laughed at this post. Then, not.
The Cheney's don't deserve to demand anything. Give me a break! If Obama should be on his knees begging for an apology, Cheney should be on his with his outstretched neck waiting for the blade to drop. We are dealing with a criminal thug here, who's murder by drone would be much more deserved than some others. And he just won't keep his nasty mouth shut. He is like an very powerful fart that won't dissipate into the air. Not that I'm for suspension of due process--then I'd be giving up one of my ideals---but I'm sorely tempted.
That would be a good question to ask Oblahblah . . . a couple of minutes after he apologizes to Dick Cheney.
Buck: very.
If we 'apologise' for torturing him then can we pull out his fingernails?
Cheney and his ilk are good examples of people who are born without the capacity to empathize or to know right from wrong -- I guess they would be called psychopaths, or is it sociopaths? Anyway, whatever the label, they are evil...and I don't even believe there is such a thing as evil (except for those people.) Anyway, look on the bright side -- with the revolution that is now brewing I see changes coming, and one of those changes will be the majority of Americans demanding the imprisonment of these war criminals. I honestly think we can make it happen and I look forward to seeing that day!
Cheney = Clinton = Bush = Obama Maybe it is time to start electing non dem/repubs.
Not a bad trick when you can't even get them on the ballot.
" In my state there were at least seven political parties on my ballot."
And how many were not in the pocket of the Elite and Corporations? In US politics, if your snout isn't in the Corporate trough, you don't have a chance in hell of getting appointe... select...I mean, 'elected'.
"Cheney Praises Strike, But Seeks Apology"
That's rich! - Mr. Brazen goes to town.
One war-criminal apologizing to another for naming it. Nice logic.
Fuck Cheney and his daughter.
The more kills Obama gets the more votes he will get. Good campaign strategy. What a country.
Hoa binh
"Fuck Cheney and his daughter." - Both?? You perv. A threesome with Cheney and his daughter can't be healthy.
ungracious speculative comment removed about STDs in genetic transmission.... never mind....
The current administration has followed the path of the previous, and both have abandoned the ideals of the Constitution. The only recourse appears to be the Occupy Together movements gathering steam, as there is no electoral fix within the Dictatorship of the Duopoly. Personally, I was at the Occupy L.A. gathering yesterday, and plan to be there as often as I can. Don't just sit at home and post here at Common Dreams... Come out and join in, the friends you will meet are the change we can be.
Good call!
Wish I was close enough.
If there isn't an Occupy Together movement near you, you can at the very least come out and vigil in support near your town hall or civic center area. Staying home is no longer an option. imho
This gets worse by the day: Get out in the streets, find nearest occupytogether and raise holy hell! Class war indeed!
"They said the killing of an American citizen without due process calls into question the president's past criticisms of the Bush administration for using enhanced interrogation techniques."
Yup. It certainly does. On the other hand, the "quick kill" technique might be regarded as more merciful even if it doesn't quite fit into the procedural escape hatches provided for "enhanced interrogation." Perhaps John Yoo and/or Jay Bybee could be persuaded to make some small adjustments to their "interpretations" of the applicable "supreme law" treaties, etc.
0 has got harold koh, so no need for yoo.
Liz was overheard whispering to her father, "dad maybe you can get the Dems to apologize for, you know, that yellow streak up your back over that deferment and Vietnam thing accusation."
Liz Cheney, who said she could talk....
Of course the extra-judicial murder of a US citizen is a horrible precedent, and yet if a poll were taken, I bet the majority of Americans are glad he's dead. I do not think this is an issue that will unite the under classes in their struggles. The Occupy Movement is our best hope, but this issue is not a key.
Why only the extra-judicial murder of u.s. citizens?
Is it ok to murder everyone else?
Not arguing, just saying.
We've ALWAYS murdered others at our whims. The murder of US citizens has always been in a deniability mode. This is new and certainly troubling.
Yes.
Soldiers have been used numerous times to squash labor strikes.
Then there are cases like Waco and Ruby Ridge.
The new part is the open declaration of the government's right to murder and troubling is an understatement.
Stop arguing. You're just quibbling over semantics and end-all-be-all results. You probably even agree with the original poster so post a comment yourself and stop trying to hijack theirs.
Uh, I made it clear that I wasn't arguing and the word "yes" acknowledges agreement.
The thing is, it is disingenuous of the media to always include "american citizens" when talking about sanctioned murder.
I'm confident that Greg understood. Why didn't you?
69 anyone?
No thanks.
Well in a perverse sort of way Cheney is right: the torture of Khalid Sheik Mohommed 180 times resulted in a profitable thriller called the 911 Commission Report, which has indeed kept him and his evil neocon henchmen safe from investigation and prosecution for treason.
I wonder if sociopathology is transmitted genetically, from father to daughter, or did she learn it from him and his venal friends?
Nature versus nurture? Probably a little of both. But I'd sure not like Cheney for a Dad. This bitch is too stupid to care.
Cheney: "when he [claims on foreign soil that our torturing broke basic American ideals]... he does real damage to our standing in the world."
Poor Cheney. Hearing the POTUS say that must have been, well, torture.
The Bush Error's # 1 Chicken Hawk & his wacko offspring appearing on corporate media (CNN this time) merely points out how out-of-touch and vapid said outlets are. Dick Cheney deserves to end his days rotting in an Iraqi jail (Abu Ghraib preferably), with his ill-gotten gains (Haliburton stock options, bonds, etc.) used to pay for the medical care of the young Americans & Iraqis his war-mongering mangled.
The policies of the past and current administration, with too much enabling by the American people, are a blight on the soul of our nation. There will be karma, for them and for the American nation as a whole. Isn't it obvious our karma was INSTANT once we turned 9/11 into vengeance as well as justification for global empire.
duplicate post removed, oops
"Our karma" is also impacted, by those who still accept the official story. I'll get INSTANT hate messages for that comment, but the burial of common sense, by most, even after they look at the video of WTC7, guarantees that justice will never be served upon those who actually committed the crimes, and also guarantees that the expansion of empire, post 9/11, will continue unabated.
I agree with you.
To achieve justice for the lives destroyed and the economic devastation caused by the wars, we have to correct the narrative of 9/11. The lies of 9/11 were and still are used to justify the endless wars.
The way to peace is back through 9/11.
Obama has given the weight of precedent to Bush/Cheney Draconian policies. After US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki's Extrajudicial Murder, Obama should apologize to the whole free world. Now, Bush/Cheney/Obama belong to the exclusive 'I Can't Leave the Country Club' for fear of being prosecuted. Murder has no statue of limitations.
What kind of multi-dimensional chess has Obama been playing to end up owing Bush/Cheney an apology?
We can accept the war criminals' 'apologies' in a post-revolution tribunal, at sentencing, along with Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al. There will be no justice for the Cheneys of the world without a revolution in the US. And, indeed, the war criminal class is quite large, particularly when one looks at the mass media enablers--those trained prevaricators like Brian Williams and other 'news anchors', and John Yoo and his ilk working behind the scenes.
You've got it, Memory!
And when Obama eagerly drops to his knees and apologizes to Dick & Duhhbya and the dumbed-down, brainwashed masses roll over for it, unquestioning as usual, that will pretty much say it all about early 21st century Amurka and its aberrant Planet of the Apes immorality.
No apology will be given or is needed. Except for the 'ticking time-bomb scenario' torture is pretty much for sadists. A 'clean,' quick kill is different. Of course the 'clean' part is subject to interpretation.
'ticking time-bomb scenario'
yeah right.
you've watched too many episodes of "24".
