US: 29,000 Somali Children Under 5 Dead in Famine
NAIROBI, Kenya — The drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5, according to U.S. estimates, the first time such a precise death toll has been released related to the Horn of Africa crisis.
A child from southern Somalia takes food at a camp in Mogadishu, Somalia, Wednesday, Aug 3, 2011. Thousands of people have arrived in Mogadishu over the past two weeks seeking assistance and the number is increasing by the day. The worst drought in the Horn of Africa has sparked a severe food crisis and high malnutrition rates, with parts of Kenya and Somalia experiencing pre-famine conditions, the United Nations has said. More than 10 million people are now affected in drought-stricken areas of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda and the situation is deteriorating, (AP Photo/Farah Abdi Warsameh) The United Nations has said previously that tens of thousands of people have died in the drought, the worst in Somalia in 60 years. The U.N. says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, a statistic that suggests the death toll of small children will rise.
Nancy Lindborg, an official with the U.S. government aid arm, told a congressional committee in Washington on Wednesday that the U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days in southern Somalia. That number is based on nutrition and mortality surveys verified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The U.N. on Wednesday declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones, bringing the total number to five. Out of a population of roughly 7.5 million, the U.N. says 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance.
Getting aid to Somalia has been made more difficult because al-Qaida-linked militants control much of the country's most desperate areas. Al-Shabab has denied that a famine is taking place, and won't give access to the World Food Program, the world's biggest provider of food aid.
Tens of thousands of refugees have fled south-central Somalia in hopes of finding food at camps in Ethiopia, Kenya and in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.
Hundreds of millions of dollars have been donated to fight the hunger crisis, but the U.N. says it needs hundreds of millions more.

Show AllGet males to stop demanding "their" women keep popping out "their" babies in the name of their "manhood." Give women free birth control of whatever kind and how to use it.
Polls of women in poor countries nearly always tell us that they do not want all the babies their husbands demand they have. They would love to have birth control - and it has to be in their control, not the man's because he's not the one getting worn out at an early age by bearing too many children too close together. Even if it has to be secret, we've got to get birth control of some kind to women who want it.
Not to mention that earth's resources are already at a straining point - there just isn't enough for all the people here now, no less millions more.
What are we as a species, stupid? Selfish? Or just ignorant?
We should send agricultural experts who can help people who've been dependent on aid workers for food too long to grow their own food again. There are nutritious crops that can be grown in the dessert; that's the kind of help they really need. Aid from other countries can stop at any time - they need to be helped to be more self-sufficient, just as we, too, need to learn.
The article is about people dying of starvation and you're talking about birth control. I've come across a lot of posts by racists talking about how this famine is good because it 'culls' the less than white population. People are actively dying and you talk about population control. Pretty sneaky Cleanearth, pretty sneaky o.O
What we should be talking about here is the obscene attitude by the crazy fringe in the United States that sways the majority. You know the one: "Birth control is ungodly, a plot by liberals to promote immorality". Handing out birth control and educating Africans ignorant on the subject would do a lot to ease starvation.
Oh, and what exactly does 'actively dying' mean? Isn't that a phrase for suicide? And how do you get "culling blacks" from people talking about birth control? You may not be racist, nevermored, but you could use a course in logic.
Perhaps it would be good to fund non-aligned NGO's to provide water treatment from sea water, construct pipelines to pump water(not oil) from the coast throughout the country to provide irrigation for crops and for drinking water. Keep the U.S. and all other military presence at a minimum so as not to inflame national interests, and send in seeds and agricultural equipment and teach the people how to farm. We can spend billions and billions to arm and provide military support for any country that will kiss our ass, why not redirect that money to a truly humanitarian cause? Let Israel stand alone for the time being, and let the U.S. provide a good example for a change, behind the scenes of course, anonymously. The U.S. would get a lot more reward(spiritually) if they were to embark on causes that promote life, rather than death.
