Breaking: Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Hits Off Japan Coast; Localized Tsunami Warning Follows
Japan -- Japan was rattled by a strong aftershock and tsunami warning Thursday night nearly a month after a devastating earthquake and tsunami flattened the northeastern coast.
The Japan meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for a wave of up to one meter. The warning was issued for a coastal area already torn apart by last month's tsunami.
Officials say Thursday's quake was a 7.4-magnitude and hit 25 miles (40 kilometers) under the water and off the coast of Miyagi prefecture. The quake that preceded last month's tsunami was a 9.0-magnitude.
Buildings as far away as Tokyo shook for about a minute.
U.S. Geological Survey gave the preliminary magnitude as 7.4 and it struck off the eastern coast 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Sendai and 90 miles (140 kilometers) from Fukushima. It was about 215 miles (345 kilometers) from Tokyo.
The depth was 25 miles (40 kilometers). Shallower quakes tend to be more destructive.
Hundreds of aftershocks have shaken the northeast region devastated by the March 11 earthquake, but few have been stronger than 7.0.

Are you someone who normally panics? You must be since that's all you think about. People who warn others not to do something they aren't doing anyway, should take a nice look in the mirror. You are preoccupied with trying not to panic or go into hysterics for that matter.
Very insightful, but I think hyperwad's main purpose here is to make everyone complacent about nuclear power. He's a big promoter of it, from whatever agency he works for, maybe the NRC or one of the big nuke energy outfits. He's been constantly minimizing the threat of radioactivity from Fukishima for days, assuring us all that the reported levels are harmless or overinflated, so no one anywhere need panic or even worry.
He wants nuclear power to surge ahead full steam because he's more worried about fossil fuels causing further global warming. Petroleum is worse than nuclear, for hyperwad. Of course, both are horrible for the environment, and for us and every living thing. But he's obviously willingly blinded himself to the dreadful horror of implanting nuclear facilities all over the planet, which is evident to any sentient brain, after Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and now this calamity in Japan.
Hyperwad doesn't think any of those incidents are that big a deal. Expecting him to be rational can only be frustrated by his repeated denial engine telling us there's nothing to worry about, millions of times higher levels of radiation from cesium, iodine and all the other isotopes released from the Fukishima plant than are considered over the line for human health concerns, are No Big Deal. He's panicking that anyone is worried about it. He wants to see countless more nuclear plants built and put on line.
I feel like I just got into the shower and read the writing on the side of Dr. Bronner's shampoo bottle.
Ha-ha - I get you. Me too.
Those conspiracy-buffs sure know how to lighten up any serious discussion...
But what do I know? - Maybe the moon really is a big white cheese?
HAARP is real.......Search for it yourself.
I don't know why you poke fun.
It may be a small expected tsunami wave but surely would be alarming to people already sensitized to every wiggle of the earth. I myself tend to notice such things immediately, having been in Anchorage in 1964... The brief news piece gives all preliminary data except for putting depth in context. If shallower earthquake epicenters are more dangerous, more active at the surface, is 25-30 miles down a shallow one, a moderately deep one, or what? It seems this one is shallow.

Thank you dus7!
This Nuclear Meltdown is a corporate blessing, there were a lot of old buildings near the reactors with mice in them.
As we learned in Chernolbyl mutated mice tend to miscarry, lowering the population and thus being less of a burden to farmers and home owners.
Over the course of a few millenium this will be a large savings to the citizentry.
The TEPCO accountants will soon be mailing invoices billing for this benefit to local citizens.
That's right. We have nothing to worry about. Corporations will take care of us.
Is there a textual ecco in here??
- Thought I just skimmed those shampoo-bottle instructions...
shampoo instructions.
But your still using the Shampoo.....And its REAL!!!!
so is HAARP
search it out for yourself you smug ba$t@......
it's Neptune trying to spit back all that radioactive water.
like your imagery
readbetweenthe_lines,
You are right. Yesterday I was watching NHK Japan news and the weather report came on predicting high seasonal tides for today arounf Fukushima, Sendai and Ibaraki prefectures. I realized that the heavy earthquake period around March 11 had those heavy tides as well and said UH OH to myself.
I guess I should be glad it wasn't bigger (so far).
The pro-nuke nuts here said from the start that the reactors at Fukushima Dai--chi had survived the March 11 Quake fine and the tsunami is the reason for all the subsequent troubles. While the tsunami certainly did compromise the cooling by stopping all the pumps and leaving the place wide open to catastrophe when the batteries gave out, it has been proven that reactor #4 containment was cracked during the March 11, 2011 earthquake. http://fairewinds.com/home
Human civilization didn't work. The pro-nuke nuts are living proof; Several years of calculus and nuclear physics under their belt and they still can't see past their wallet. Objectivity isn't their thing; mendacity and obfuscation is.
I have a fantasy of going back in time to 1480 and positioning myself with a huge lazer in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to make sure nothing gets across from Europe to turtle island while I institute an awareness campaign on turtle island for a century or so of what kind of cruel and merciless humans exist in other parts of the world so that "adequate preparations" can be made to deal with the invaders. Considering I'm the descendant of Europeans., I might disappear (along with the lazer) like in the back to the future movies. I wouldn't think twice about bringing about my non-existence if I could somehow prevent this massive clusterfuck we have today. The Bubonic plague was just nature's delaying tactic to slow them down.
Several other news sites on the 'Net have mentioned that at least three other reactor sites have had power lines fail, or have had service interruptions.
Worst case scenario is that we go from one catastrophically damaged reactor to three or four.
oh............ I wonder why the earthquakes keep coming????
cause no one is turning off the earthquake machine HAARP.
someone here asked about monitor readings on the RPVs and DWs in the reactor.
they do have some sensors up and running.
