Rachel Corrie Case: Israeli Soldier to Testify Anonymously
Family criticises decision to allow soldier who drove bulldozer that killed daughter to give evidence from behind screen
However the judge hearing the case in Haifa has ruled that, for security reasons, the soldier can testify anonymously from behind a screen, denying Cindy and Craig Corrie the opportunity to face the man who directly caused their daughter's death.

(Photograph: Getty Images) Israel's supreme court refused to hear an appeal by the family challenging the judge's ruling. However, the unit commander in charge that day will testify in full view of the court as his identity is already known.
"I'll be grateful at least to be able to hear [the bulldozer driver's] words but I won't get the complete picture and I'll be disappointed by that," Cindy Corrie said in an interview in Jerusalem last week.
"They've said it's the security of the witnesses they are trying to protect. I can understand it would be uncomfortable for the soldiers to have to see us, but I can't understand how our family is a threat to their security."
Corrie, from Olympia, Washington state, was killed while attempting to protect the home of a Palestinian family in the Rafah area of Gaza from being demolished by Israeli troops seven and a half years ago. A posthumous book and play based on the graphic and moving emails she wrote to friends and family made her an iconic figure.
An internal Israeli military investigation, which was never published nor released to the US government or the Corries, concluded that the bulldozer driver had not seen Rachel and that no charges would be brought. The case was closed.
The family brought a civil case - "absolutely our last resort" - against the state of Israel, which opened in March this year and is expected to conclude early next year. Among the early witnesses was a fellow activist, Briton Richard Purssell, who described how Corrie disappeared from view under the advancing bulldozer.
The driver's evidence will be a key moment in the case but the Corrie family has been careful not to invest too much in his evidence. "While the driver is very important, to me he is not the only person who has responsibility," said Cindy Corrie. "Responsibility is shared with a lot of people. My focus isn't entirely on the driver."
Sarah Corrie Simpson, Rachel's older sister, said: "Ultimately the individual had the ability to stop that act. However if you only hold responsible the individual, you're losing the broader context of what's going on. You have to look at the chain of command and what sort of orders were being given at that time."
The family, while wanting an acceptable end to their battle for justice, was wary of the concept of closure. "It's hard to conceive of that," said Craig Corrie. "People talk about it, but it's real hard to define what closure would be when you've lost a child, lost a little sister."
Corrie Simpson said closure was difficult to define: "I'm not sure how you ever get to a place where you even feel close to that when you know there are people out there on the other end of what happened to Rachel, and you've never even been able to see their faces. Mum talks about being able to see the humanity of the person that was on the other end - and now the majority of soldiers will get to testify behind a screen, and that takes that away from us."
At the very least, the family hoped their legal battle would shine a light on the Israeli Defence Force's (IDF) investigative process.
Cindy Corrie said if the IDF were, as it claimed, the most moral army in the world, "they should be willing to look at a system that is much more transparent than what exists right now".
Last month, a colonel responsible for writing operating manuals for military bulldozers, testified that there were no civilians in a war zone.
Cindy Corrie said: "It's a window, hearing that coming from these people, a real window into the mindset - and it's very, very concerning. And I think every Israeli should be really concerned."

Show AllGideon Levy, who writes for Haaretz, has also made the same observation that the IDF does and that is that the Israeli army takes great pride in believing that they are the most moral army in the world. But the IDF's reluctance to take an active, unbiased look into Rachel Corrie's death and the way that they have treated the Palestinians certainly makes a lie out of that disingenuous statement.
She threw herself under a bulldozer REPEATEDLY! What responsibility does the IDF have? Complete responsibility, obviously. If I am driving down the street and an adult purposefully runs in front of my car, trying to get killed, well, if I hit them, it's obviously my fault. If I am at a gun range and somebody keeps hiding behind the targets and I fail to see them hide behind mine, the bullets I put in their brilliant brain obviously makes me evil.
Oh, lord! I hope y'all realize that this demented troll is actually being serious about this. This is not sarcasm!

I agree. His comments are reminiscent of what Gideon Levy observed when he pointed out that Israel is the only occupying army in the history of the world which believes that they should be perceived as being victims instead of an oppressive occupying force.
"...the Israeli army takes great pride in believing that they are the most moral army in the world..."
Can we say cognitive dissonance boys and girls? I'm willing to bet that they actually believe that too and are not just saying that they believe it when they actually don't. Such is the nature of denial.
The bulldozer driver was attempting to commit a war crime (bulldozing a civilian house) when he killed Rachel. He wants anonymity (testifying behind a screen) for his own security, to avoid war crimes charges.
Given the ultra-sophistication of various post-9/11 technology, who's to say that the voice of the soldier who ran Rachel Corrie over with the bulldozer wouldn't be recognized anyway?
Take a look at this more than compelling video of a Palestinian speaking Hebrew to the soldiers attacking his village following a non-violent demonstration. This Palestinian Ghandi has been in jail ever since his brave and courageous effort to speak truth to power.

Pffft. What a joke of a trial. For God's sake, it is being held in ISRAEL, by the ISRAELI COURT. Since WHEN has the terrorist state of Israel EVER done ANYTHING that does not further its own interests? Being impartial in this case would result in Israel having to own up to committing war crimes - soemthing they will never do. Just like their "self-investigation" of the flotilla massacre - committed by themselves. Amazingly, they found themselves innocent of any wrongdoing. Ditto with their ongoing violations of over 45 United Nations resolutions for the last forty years. Ditto with their violating any number of international treaties and laws, including the Nuremburg Charter, by their illegal occupation of Palestine, for decades.
Please. I can't believe the Corrie's were stupid enough to think they could ever find justice in Israel.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
You are soooo right.
"Please. I can't believe the Corrie's were stupid enough to think they could ever find justice in Israel."
If you can't believe it, why do you believe it? And, more importantly, why do you disseminate your mean-spirited poison against a brave couple who are exposing themselves to a vicious and hostile legal system to reveal the hypocricy and unjustness of the country that murdered and defamed their daughter? Do you really think they went expecting they could get a fair hearing and a favorable verdict? If they weren't there doing what they're doing, how much thought would you, and the rest of this country, be giving to their daughter's sacrifice?
I'll stop here...biting my tongue.
Thanks, Michael F, for your posting. Of course the Corries are not stupid. They are doing everything they can for the Palestinian cause because their daughter was killed in support of justice for the people of Palestine. As you said, would any of these loud mouths on here even be thinking of Rachel's murder if not for the family's persistence in pursuing the truth of what took place back in 2003? Shame on all you others for being so insulting towards this dedicated, loving family.
My "mean-spirited poison" is aimed at the corrupt, terrorist state of Israel, for their illegal murder of Rachel Corrie. I just believe that the Corries should have directed their wrath in other ways at Israel - i.e., more productive ways that might actually expose and underline what a murderous rogue regime it is, rather than a futile and undoubtedly expensive trial that will be judged by the very state that committed the murder of their daughter itself. Seriously - the Corries should know better. If your daughter is murdered by someone, do you ask the murderer for justice??
I should, perhaps, have used a word other than "stupid;" perhaps "naive."

Perhaps they have to pursue the matter in Israeli courts before they can bring it to an international court, or even a civil suit based out of the US against the government of Israel.
Better yet, they should sue the bulldozer's manufacturers. That will bring attention to all of them who are aiding and abetting the terrorism.
The Corries already tried suing Caterpillar, the bulldozer's manufacturer, but the case was thrown out of court.
Yeah! Why can't they have sharia courts like Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and all the other nations of the world with great judiciaries and longtime respect for human rights!
Troll! Filthy, disgusting troll!
"Yeah! Why can't they have sharia courts like Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and all the other nations of the world with great judiciaries and longtime respect for human rights!"
First of all, the United States supports the Egyptian government which receives 1 billion a year in US "aid", has just sold 60 billion dollars of military hardware to Saudi Arabia and supports that government militarily, and Iran wouldn't be the nation it is today if the US didn't overthrow their Democracy in 1953 with Operation Ajax to steal their oil and help them run SAVAK for 25 years until a group of religious militants were able to overthrow the puppet dictator traitor, the Shah.
Just as Israel wouldn't be the nation it is today if it didn't receive 3 billion dollars a year from the US government to buy US weapons to control the indigenous population there through brutal military force.
Who wouldn't be happy if the United States just stopped supporting all these lousy governments and allowed them to collapse? Most of the Middle East would be over-joyed to see the Egyptian government collapse, the Sa'ud Family hung, and just let the Iranian government collapse by doing the simple thing of not threatening them all the time with military action which forces Iranians to support their government if only for self preservation from a US military attack.
And with Iran, let's not forget that their supposed nuclear weapons program they are accused of is precisely what Israel did in Dimona, until Morechai Vanunu exposed it. I find the Israeli hypocrisy and dishonesty on this subject amazing. With regard to nuclear weapons anyhow, Israel is far worse than Iran, and Iran hasn't brutalized a population for 62 years like Israel has.
I for one would like to see a consistent foreign policy in the Middle East, and for the US government to learn from it's past mistakes of supporting bad governments there. By all means, let the Middle Eastern governments fall, they will if the US just restrains itself from trying to control them all the time.
Let's not forget their investigation of the Gaza Massacre where the conclusions were that the IDF is "the most moral army in the world." I bet that if you ask them for a second opinion, they'll tell you again how moral they are.
Israel lies and no matter what the atrocity, will always cover it up. They suck, I am so fed up with the the stealing of land, the killing of Palestinians, the ARROGANCE of the soldiers and their sense of entitlement and yes pure rascism against Palestinians. And the good ole US just backs them unconditionally like frightened sheep.
If the the USA had a mindset for peace all they need to say to Israel is cut the crap or we will stop the flow of cash to you and military aid.
Exactly. I feel the same way. Ironically, it is our unlimited and unwavering support of Israel, regardless of the laws and treaties they break, and the constant war crimes they commit, that is the main reason for terrorist animosity towards us. If we withdrew our support of Israel, or at the least made our billions of dollars in "support" conditional on their abiding by UN resolutions, laws, and treaties, then our national security would be greatly improved, and the number of people wanting to launch terrorist attacks against us would be greatly reduced.
The way the U.S. trumpets itself and Israel as paragons of virtue and "freedom" and "peace" and "democracy" - the whole while being the exactly OPPOSITE of those ideals - makes me absolutely nauteous and ashamed.

I see you blatantly attempt to try to confuse Jews and the State of Israel.
When it comes to the issue of Palestine, as the Palestinians are a Semitic people, to support the European Colonialization of Palestine is the antisemitic position.
The point of Zionism, since Herzl, is to foster the hatred of Jews so that they will feel they have no option but steal land from Palestine.
Thus, why you try to make it seem like to be against Genocide in Palestine is to be "anti-Jew", as it serves 3 purposes at once.
On one hand it acts as a shield, protecting you from those who would not want to be likened to Hitler by denouncing the same actions that Hitler did, because they are being performed by those that claim to be Jews (Though Zionism and Judaism are mutually exclusive)
On the other hand, It lets you attempt to discredit those who speak out against the State of Israel perpetrating the same atrocities learned by the Zionists from their Former Ally, by likening them to the Former Ally of Zionism, who collaborated with Zionists in the 1930s and 1940s so that they could further each others Nationalist aims.
Then, probably most importantly, it actually pushes people to join ranks with the ideological heirs of your Former Allies, thus furthering your own Nationalist Aims, by swelling the ranks of Non-Jewish Nationalists to instill fear into more Jewish people, thus creating a Serious Threat for them to fear, driving them to be more sympathetic to your Jewish Nationalist aims.
Unfortunately for you, enough of Herzl's writings have been translated into English now, that your playbook has been exposed.

No one reads "comments" that are longer then the article....Plus..
I know it was a bunch of propaganda crap that the hopelessly naive will chose to believe...
No matter how you progs try to slice it, Israel is the 51 State and will be protected against the lying homicide bombers you have thrown your lot with...
NoHalo, just because you refuse to face reality doesn't mean the rest of the world does too. The rest of us DO read the comments and welcome them. Your trolling? Not so much!
And, dude, if I were you, I'd cut your loses while you're still ahead. You're making less and less sense by the post. But then again, trolls for Israel usually do, having no moral stand to back up their confabulations & cheap propaganda.
The good Rev. beat me to it. Those of us with more than basic attention spans are quite happy to read long comments.
Though you clearly have far greater experience than most in "propaganda crap that the hopelessly naive will choose to believe".
NoHalo:
Quite the contrary, diversity of opinion is encouraged. However, what you are doing is not expressing your opinion but trolling for money - the worst, lowest and most disgusting type of prostitution known to man. You are condoning murder and crimes against humanity. You are entitled to your opinion but not to cheer atrocities. As for the "anti-semitic" cries, how well is that going for ya?
Does anybody know what happened to the rest of the comments?

@NoBrain...errr...Halo:
Oh, lord, please help this delusional troll. He's just a regurgitating machine for the Israeli "Ministry of Truth"
Israel is a rogue state violating common decency. Denying God given natural rights to people is a crime against humanity, a stain on the good people of Israel, and the main reason for our problems in the middle east. Even our military commanders say that Israeli policies keep our soldiers and our country in danger. Israel needs to come to the peace negotiations and learn to live in peace with its neighbors. It must also open up its country to nuclear weapons inspectors. One of the main reasons that the middle eastern nations are sceptical of Israels motives.
Brave of the Corries to even be in Israel and going through this goddamn farce. And dignified of them to be able, as I shouldn't think I could, to keep their mouths shut about what they must surely think of these homicidal maniacs and psychotic Nazis that they have to listen to and deal with in that GOD(NOT 'G-D')-FORSAKEN SHITHOLE OF A 'DEMOCRATIC',
'CIVILIZED' COUNTRY.
Not to worry, in some long-term sense - I like to think that Israel will get its come-uppance, if the laws of the universe, of karma, play out the way they usually do.
And fuck the United States government for being on the wrong side of this history, and not having the maturity, the guts and the independence to drag Israel and its immoral IDF into an international court, in defense of one of its own citizens, murdered by a racist, apartheid failed state.
Then, of course, the U.S. has only contempt for the international court, temporarily veiled when it so hypocritically wishes to publicly vilify the Charles Taylors and the Saddam Husseins.
The world will have a shot at real evolution, and humanity a chance at survival when the Netanyahus, Bushes, Blairs and Cheneys are in that dock.
The only appropriate response to those asserting he 'morality' of the IDF is to spit in their flthy faces, since the claim to any sort of 'morality' by these people is a bald-faced spit in the face of the entire world. And they do seem keen on their Old Testament 'eye-for-an-eye' 'justice'. So give it to 'em.
The foregoing will, of course, be delusionally dismissed by some - very few in these pages, one hopes - as 'anti-semitic'. And thus does the world tuck its tail between its legs in the face of a great evil politically and 'religiously' immunized, and immorally armed to its lying teeth.
How can support for a Semitic people (the Palestinians) in the face of a European Occupation be "antisemitic"?
"Not to worry, in some long-term sense - I like to think that Israel will get its come-uppance, if the laws of the universe, of karma, play out the way they usually do."
Barry, consider it done! Israeli society is being eaten alive from the inside out by a terminal cancer just like the US is. Read Ha'aretz and you'll see. It's just a matter of time for both Big Terrorist and Little Terrorist to come to the end of their bloody run. And it won't be a day too soon.
One wonders what would have been the reaction of the world if in Nuremberg the accused Nazis had also requested to be present and testify behind a screen. The difference I guess was that they had something between their legs and these IDF don't!
Much like the politicians in Washington who also seem to have a very empty space between their legs, for they would not dare ever criticize ISRAEL and put their jobs on the line. Not even when an American ship is attacked or an innocent American girl is murdered!
Starting with OBAMA who refused to answer Helen Thomas' first question to him... "Do you know of a country in the mideast who has nuclear bombs" he was tooo chicken to say Yes Israel! Instead he spoke a litany of garbage in order to avoid the question
How can this be... I would almost say that Israel has Congress by their B_ _ ls.. but then I don't really think they have any ! ! ! (except for a very small number)
I know it has nothing to do with Rachel's tragic death, but just as an added comment to the fact that we cannot continue to be blinded by the LIES of spineless politicians in Washington..
LISTEN TO THE FOLLOWING IT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE LIE YES THE LIE ! ! ! THAT MUSLIMS EXTREMISTS HATE US BECAUSE OF OUR FREEDOM. A BUSH LIE, A FOX LIE AND A LIE THAT WAS REPEATED SO MUCH THAT IGNORANT PEOPLE BEGAN TO BELIEVE IT!

America should fund Israeli settlers to leave
Monday, October 11, 2010
From time to time, the Palestine Center distributes articles it believes will enhance understanding of the Palestinian political reality. The following article by Diana Buttu was published in the Financial Times on 11 October 2010. "America should fund Israeli settlers to leave"
By Diana Buttu
The latest round of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations is already on shaky ground. At issue, once again, is Israel’s insistence that it can build and expand settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Its 10-month moratorium expired on September 26, and while Barack Obama, US president, said Israel should extend it – and according to some reports offered incentives including upgrades to Israel’s advanced weapons systems and an increase in the $3bn in annual aid for nothing beyond a 60-day extension – he, like his predecessors, has refused to insist on a total halt.
As a former adviser to the Palestinian negotiating team, I witnessed numerous failures in the peace process because of this issue. Now it threatens to derail the process again. A statement from the Arab League on Friday supported the right of the Palestinians to withdraw from talks, while even a temporary extension of the moratorium will only delay briefly the moment at which this problem returns. So a longer-term solution is needed; one in which the US provides much stronger incentives to encourage settlers to leave.
Despite Mr Obama’s urging, Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the US, still argues that “when construction resumes, it will be reserved, responsible and limited”. Yet much more than a renewal of the current limited moratorium on settlement activity is needed. If it is genuinely serious about a lasting peace, the US administration should encourage Israel’s “de-occupation” of the territories.
These settlements are the physical manifestation of Israel’s intent to perpetually control Palestinian land. From 1993 to 2000, at the height of the peace process, Israel’s settler population rose from 250,000 in 1993 to 380,000 in 2000. Today, there are about 500,000 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. That this rise continues during what is meant to be a “freeze” only heightens doubts that the process will lead to Palestinian freedom.
Israel’s central bureau of statistics reported that in spite of the moratorium, the settler population in the West Bank increased by 8,000 during the first half of 2010, nearly on par with the previous year’s six-month growth and almost triple the average population growth rate inside Israel. Yet this growth is not spurred by ideology. Instead, Israeli studies indicate that the majority of settlers moved to the colonies to avail themselves of lucrative economic incentives, such as income tax reductions, education benefits, reduced housing prices and better loans. The US is also complicit. A recent New York Times investigation reveals that several Israeli settlements receive funding from US charities such as the Hebron Fund that funnel tax-free money to fuel Israel’s settlement enterprise. The Obama administration has done nothing to stop this, despite the fact that it undermines US foreign policy.
Yet a serious administration – and Congress – playing the part of an honest broker can reverse the trend simply by mirroring the reasons that encouraged people to move in the first place. In short, new incentives could be created for settlers to peacefully evacuate Palestinian territory.
There are further mechanisms which could be used. Each year the US gives billions of dollars in aid to Israel, despite the fact that Israelis have a per capita income approximately equal to that of Spain. This aid is largely unrelated to Israel’s performance in the peace process.
With an ailing US economy, the administration could condition some of its subsidy to encourage Israel to eliminate its incentives to new settlers and reverse the ones to existing ones. Aid should also be made conditional on Israel’s successful implementation of this plan. A full process of de-occupation would also require that Washington acts to close existing tax loopholes that help US charities send financial aid to settlements.
Critics may argue this plan rewards Israel for having violated international law in the past. In this they have a point. But blanket US support for Israel has spanned six decades and has exceeded $140bn. It is not going to stop overnight, but it can be used for more productive purposes.
Now is the time to test Israel, and for the US to demonstrate its commitment to Palestinian freedom. If the US provides real incentives, and if Israel co-operates, US aid will finally begin to help remove a major roadblock to peace by drastically reducing the number of settlers. This will break the Israeli mindset that the US will always support its existing policies. It also will demonstrate to Palestinians that the US is determined to find a solution and not simply to espouse another conflict management scheme. Should Israel not comply, then $3bn a year will be better spent on Americans at home than bankrolling a nation that ignores US foreign policy interests abroad.

Time to slip the Paly's a 10 kiloton nuke and a 'stealth' donkey cart to deliver it to Tel Aviv to help explain just how pissed the Paly's are with the ZioNazi's.
Blood soaked Israel has gone berzerk, few people would complain of a Judenrein Middle East at this time in history - especially the Palestinians, Syrians, Jordanese and lest of all Hezbollah, Hamas, and the people of Gaza/ Palestine.

Gutless IDF killers (with a little help from the Israeli vultures of the high court) refuse to have their cut-throat killers face the Corrie family this much time after murdering their precious daughter Rachel.
I say, we raise money to reveal the entire bunch of IDF rats ID's and then send it to the UN and ICC for prosecution.
Remember folks......
The IDF killer 'drove over Rachel 'twice' in the D-7 Caterpillar! The Caterpillar company should be a co-defendant for selling these bulldozers to the ZioNazi's - they certainly know that war crimes are being committed with their bulldozers and pile drivers.
This was premeditated murder!!!!
TheAZCowwBoy

Psst...psst...Cowboy, you're wrong on that. The IDF killer didn't drive over Rachel twice, rather, she threw herself under the Caterpillar - twice! and jew haters, anti-semites and lovers of the cult called Islam - such as yourself - are blaming that poor, defenseless, traumatized soldier. Get a clue!
Seriously, look up at the post up there from Israel troll Ptips, making that claim. It will make you sick to your stomach! What some people wouldn't do for money.
Kangaroo court, just like in the US. I feel so, so sorry for Rachel's family and the families of all the others - Palestinian and foreigner - innocents who have been slayed by Amerikkkan bullets in the guise of Israeli riffles. Rachel's family should go after the bulldozer manufacturers. That would be a way to get their attention!
Good luck to the Corrie family. "Justice" is not on their side.
Bit by bit and piece by piece the "wall" is coming down. The Israeli myth is being seen for what it is; a morally bankrupt construct, whose days are numbered.
