U.S. Army Charges 5 Soldiers Over Afghan Murders: Report
WASHINGTON - Five U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Kandahar province have been charged with murdering three Afghan civilians, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.
In its early edition, the Post cited Army charging documents as saying the infantry personnel, including one staff Sergeant, murdered the civilians between January and May of this year.
The Post cited military court documents and interviews with people familiar with the case to allege the killings "were committed essentially for sport by soldiers who had a fondness for hashish and alcohol."
The accused, who also include seven other members of the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade charged with lesser offences, denied wrongdoing through lawyers and family members, the newspaper reported.
The five members of the platoon accused of murder began talking about creating a "kill team" in December 2009 and murdered their first victim on January 25, 2010, in the village of La Mohammed Kalay in Kandahar, the Post said.
The soldiers were assigned at the time to provide security for a meeting between U.S. officers and tribal elders.
Pentagon officials were not immediately available for comment.

Show AllIf their trial were to being conducted by the Afghans then justice would probably be served. But if these five soldiers are tried by the U.S. Army then in all likelihood the fix is in.
gnken
They should be brought to the International Criminal Court of Justice in the Hague. But the US Govt. will sentence a few low ranking soldiers to live in prison and people will forget about it very quickly. This will continue. I work with several Iraq/Afgan Veterans and they tell funny stories about what goes on over there. The fighting can be a day job for them, then the return to a base that is heavily fortified and soldiers go to the barracks and take there college correspondence courses, eat at Mcdonalds, Wendys, Dunkin Donuts to name a few. Unlike Vietnam and past wars where after being in combat you went to a base but it did not have all the luxuries of Fast Food, Internet, Cell Phones and the like. Oh don't forget the non reality of computer games. So is anyone surprised that this kind of thing goes on? When will America wake up and demand a stop to all this?
These five soldiers killed, murdered, three humans. The US army has murdered hundreds of thousands throughout Iraq and Afghanistan...and many other countries of the world!!!! When will they and the politicians who ordered the murders be brought to justice?
Try millions! There were two million Vietnamese killed during the war there. By some reliable estimates there have been at least one million Iraqis killed since W and his handlers invaded the Middle East. God knows how many have been killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The US has spent trillions on killing people and destroying whole countries in the Middle East. How long will we allow our bought-off politicians to shovel money into pointless wars instead of using it here to help people who are in desperate need? Obama is the biggest disappointment I have ever seen in politics. Almost completely ineffective. The Republicans are ten times worse. Great choice, no?
Oh yeah, and don't forget; these murderous military punks are coming back to this country someday. Some of them will keep right on murdering. It's already happening.
'In Vietnam, charging people with murder was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500.' - "Apocalypse Now"
Free video war games for troops so they can get their rocks off by pretending to kill instead going out and murdering for real!
At least these men will get a trial under established rules of law and proceedure, unlike those who are being held at Gitmo or Baghram, or where the hell else.
How tragic that our government has de-humanized those in uniform to the degree they would kill for sport. Get out of Afghanistan NOW. God knows the money sucked up by the Pentagon can be put to better use here. We know the corporations run the show-I had hoped that would change. The neocon vision of empire is still being played out. To truly fulfill the promises of this country, withdrawal from the hundreds of military bases we have established world-wide must occur. It is the same old story of the tail wagging the dog. We as citizens are mostly clueless. This forum is great, but how much of it is preaching to the choir?
The question has to be asked.
Were these soldiers "de-humanized" by the Military and its training regimen or were they already partways there when they joined that Military?
If the latter is there a calculated campaign by the Media and the Pentagon, CIA and other such groups to create the enviroment wherein this type of person can be "developed" . ?
Given the example of World History, from the "Militancy" of the Prussians, to The "savagery" of the Imperialists building Empire in the Americas, from the sheer "brutality" of the factions in the Congo to the "We live for War" of the Spartans, this de-humanizing has its root at the level of the Society around it and in order to transform said society an evolution is needed that might well take generations.
De-militarizing is a step but only the first small one.
You make interesting points. There was a dramatic change In Germany and Japan after the War as far as their view of Militarism went but the catharsis that happened there was due to the violence that was visited upon them.
Just as the dramatic change in Iraq and Afghanistan was the result of violence.
Now I am no great fan of violence nor are most of the people here but there must be examples of such evolutions that occurred that were not related to the prescence of Violence.
I suppose the best example might have been the social awakening that started to happen in the 1960's. That time period seemed to have a whole lot of visionary people come into prominence at the same time. Perhaps where the use of violence is a top to bottom approach wherein those in Authority rely on it to keep the people in their place the NON Violent means of evolving a society must start at the bottom.
I certainly would like to see this during MY lifetime.
As usuall, these twelve enlisted personnel were not under the direct supervision of a military officer, just like at Abu Graib! They concocted and carried out these murders without any of their immediate supervisiors having a clue as to what they were about? I seriously doubt it! Forget the just a few bad apples excuse, it would seem that the whole tree has gone bad!
Seems like the Army learned it's lesson after it had to have Major Colin Powell rat out Lieutenant Willam Calley for My Lai during his Court Martial!
I was just going to write the same thing. I can see it unfolding already. This was just a few rogue bad apples and see, we bring them to trial! Aren't we fair and just?
Just like Abu Graib, it was just a few grunts run amok. Pay no attention to the many layers of command that lies above them. There may be a Captain or Colonel that will be cashiered, or moved to another command. These guys will get minimal sentences, possibly suspended.
Ain't justice grand? Especially military.
I believe the soldiers under discussion in the above report are those described and identified in the following article from The Guardian (I am quoting just the first two paragraphs of the piece):

US Soldiers 'Killed Afghan Civilians for Sport and Collected Fingers as Trophies'
Soldiers face charges over secret 'kill team' which allegedly murdered at random and collected fingers as trophies of war
by Chris McGreal
"Twelve American soldiers face charges over a secret "kill team" that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies.
Five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men who were allegedly killed for sport in separate attacks this year. Seven others are accused of covering up the killings and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders when he reported other abuses, including members of the unit smoking hashish stolen from civilians. [...]"
To my knowledge, the report of these atrocities did not make it into the mainstream U.S. press.
The military is trained to kill. It horrifies me to think they are bringing this training back to this country. It's no wonder so many of our veterans suffer from PTSD as they have been required to witness if not commit the most attrocious acts of violence.
It greatly alarms me that some of these people will be joining our civilian police forces. We are seeing in my city a spate of shootings by police as if that is their first response when they feel threatened.
We are also observing other forms of violence such as suicide, military sexual trauma, domestic violence, and homelessness in the ranks of current and former military.
This is good that the London based Guardian is covering this, but how much more of this is going unreported even by the British and even other West European mainstream media to cover for the USA as part of their alliance with the US imperialist state? The Washington Post is covering this as likely is the US mainstream media, but they're allowing the military command to gloss over and write this off to use of alcohol and hard drugs. This is so much hot air. The Guardian isn't even calling them on it, even though those there have to know this is happening all the time, unlike us on this side of the pond as the British refer to it.

Winning hearts and minds one cut off finger and one human life at a time. Even the troops are undermining the troops efforts to win friends among the Muslims. What are Americans doing there except making everything worse and wasting blood and money? What about the drones that are killing suspected terrorist without a trial? The U.S.A.above constitutional law, moral law and international law. I agree with the question howcanthisbehappening?
Another story that M$M that most of M$M will ignore. It doesn't go well with the political talking points that the USA is a model state and it is only other countries that commit human rights abuses.
Let the scapegoating begin.
Cheney, Bush, Obama have murder millions, but these five misdirected fools are being tried for killing.
I am laughing at this joke.
Yes, I agree, it does seem absurd. And they use hashish as an excuse. It seems to me hashish has been used for centuries to frame up bad behavior. Maybe if everyone was smoking enough hashish they'd all sit down and stop fighting...or maybe that would require BC Bud to accomplish...any coals to Newcastle in the mix?
"Be All You Can Be; Be A Murderer!"
I've got the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade in my area, a liberal area known for the redneck clown circus going on around it.
Remember Battle In Seattle - yokel redneck wehrmacht brought in from the hinterlands.
The question is does an Army murder charge preclude or expedite your hiring into the civilian police forces where you can start shooting Indians with carving knives (and white kids scoring pot - but they pushed that one under the rug REAL deep...)
If people like this are allowed to enter the police force, they do not have legitimate jurisdiction over anyone, period.
Terror Multiplication.

What about the other killers who declare
that they have a free kill licence,
to kill as many civilians as they dare.
Because they have a job of utmost violence.
There is the elected President,
who orders deaths to get votes.
To maintain an oil supply, surely its evident,
requires bombing from drone remotes.
The pilots who frag,
No blood can they see
about kills that they can brag,
to make quota and collect a fee.
Collateral damage takes so many lives.
The folks that knew them are unforgiving,
Once somebodies sons, daughters and wives,
the innocent dead haunt the living
There are night home raiders who doubtless,
kill every living being found inside,
and any neighbour that looks like a witness.
Small villages are slaughtered in multi-homicide.
Each kill reported as a terrorist death,
since the killers do the reporting.
adds to statistics lies that steal your breath.
With absolute evil we have been consorting.
Not questioned is the reasoning of this war.
To kill off a few hundred terrorists or a score,
We train hundreds of thousands more,
To brutalise a nation to make millions galore.
Such brutal affairs of state we do make,
With world domination of oil at stake.
The CIA funded a group to attack home soil,
To return a new century war of spoil.
The names of these five are George W Bush, Richard Cheney, Condiliza Rice, Rummy, & Colin Powell. And then I woke up.
