Deepwater Horizon Fears Resurface as Rigs Probe for Oil Under Arctic Ice
ExxonMobil and Shell compete to drill in wilderness despite Greenpeace's fears a broken well could gush for years
Among those waiting are most of the world's leading oil companies, including ExxonMobil, Shell and Norway's StatOil. Watching with equal attention will be the planet's leading green groups, who they have pledged to block every effort to drill in the Arctic.
An arctic wolf tries to escape from a fragment of melting ice floe. Greenpeace fear the region is gravely threatened by oil companies. (Photograph: Jim Brandenburg/Getty Images/Minden Pictures RM) "The Arctic is the last pristine refuge in the northern hemisphere and it is simply not acceptable for oil companies to come here to drill and risk triggering a disaster that would dwarf the Deepwater Horizon spill," said Ben Ayliffe, senior energy campaigner at Greenpeace. Its ship, the Esperanza, is currently trying to disrupt drilling in the Davis Strait off the Greenland mainland. "We are going to make a real fight of this,"he said.
Last week the future of drilling in the Arctic hit the headlines when it emerged that BP, in the wake of the disastrous oil spill off America's Gulf Coast, would not be bidding for contracts in the region. But the other oil giants will. And it is not hard to understand why.
Last year, the US Geological Survey estimated that there were more than 90bn barrels of oil beneath the Arctic seabed – an estimated 13% of the world's undiscovered reserves – with the waters around Greenland, as well as the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, pinpointed as the most promising zones.
Only a handful of test wells have been sunk so far, and no oil has yet been discovered. Oil companies are confident of success, however, while environmentalists are grimly resigned to the idea of wells being sunk. Greenland, Beaufort and Chukchi are all likely to become sites of future drilling – and of major battles with ecologists.
The irony of this battle is not lost on environmentalists. At present, increased fossil fuel emissions are raising global temperatures and melting ice caps, a process that is making it much easier to drill for fossil fuels, as ice sheets break apart and expose shallower waters in the far north.
The divisive nature of these issues is highlighted in sparsely populated Greenland, the world's largest island. Most of its citizens currently view the prospect of major oil revenues as mouth-watering. At present, Greenland's 57,000 inhabitants rely on fishing and a £400m annual handout from the Danish government to maintain their livelihoods. Oil money could replace the latter and give the country independence from its Danish overlords. Hence the swift reaction last week to accusations that drilling in "iceberg alley" – as the Davis Strait is known – was environmentally hazardous. The country was well prepared, claimed Kuupik Kleist, Greenland's premier. "Of course, we are influenced by what happened in the Gulf of Mexico," he said. "We know that we are talking a huge responsibilty on our shoulders." Most islanders support this view.
But such assurances do little to comfort campaign groups such as Greenpeace. "These waters, like all Arctic waters, are incredibly dangerous," said Ayliffe last week. "They have to have ships on standby to push away icebergs or fire water cannons to deflect them. And then you only have a short window in summer to drill before the ice moves back in."
Greenpeace has targeted Scottish oil company Cairn Energy as its most dangerous foe. Cairn – which is run by former rugby international Bill Gammell, a friend of George Bush and Tony Blair – recently raised several billion pounds from the sale of its stake in its Indian oilfields in Rajasthan and has selected Greenland to be the site of all future exploration efforts. Last week, it announced the discovery of gas reserves there, though it admitted it has yet to find oil. Greenpeace has pledged to block its operations there.
Should there be a blowout of a well in this pristine wilderness, it says, it would be considerably more difficult to drill a relief well than it was in the Gulf of Mexico after a catastrophic explosion crippled BP's Deepwater Horizon rig earlier this year. Oil could be left gushing from a broken well for years, it is claimed.
Such fears have fuelled environmentalists' determination to try to block all drilling efforts in the high latitudes as new licensing rounds are lined up in Greenland for 2011 and 2012.
Other countries, such as the US, Canada and Norway, have imposed tougher new regulations on deep-water drilling. How long they are kept in operation, as Greenland opens up its waters, remains to be seen. At the same, Russia – which already has vast oil and gas drilling operations at Sakhalin – is known to be eyeing the Chukchi Sea, farther north, beyond the Bering Straits that divide Alaska and Asia. All are thought to possess rich oilfields that will become more and more important as the rest of the world's reservoirs dry up over the next two decades.
The pressure on the far north is becoming relentless.

Glenn, Indeed!
It gives them the God power. They are consciously recreating planet earth. And they are working hard on owning the new DNA strands, with their monsanto seeds and frankenfish, etc.
God as CEO of the planet. This goes beyond mere empire - Nature itself is the enemy of these guys. Well, it really always has been, since the rise of the patriarchal God concept. I suppose we are just on warp speed, now.
Yes, the ultimate power trip - revamping the natural laws and being the only ones with the survival codes. However. It can't really be done. Infinitity is way more complex and creative than they can fathom. They will create even more despair and havoc. But in the end, they can't possibly succeed. They aren't geniuses and they aren't visionaries. Although, they could succeed in extincting us.
I wonder what it would look like if evil E.T's, such as Stephen Hawkings describes, were trying to destroy our planet? Oh. I think i do know!
If they can develop starships right before they destroy this planet, they will *become* the evil ET's that go on to destroy other planets in the galaxy.
If they're lucky.

This essay brings me back to Chris Hedges recent article in CD; "BP and the "Little Eichmanns".
Too bad that somebody a lot smarter than me, can't figure out some way that the people world wide, could build an army that could declare a war on greed, avarice, and this frenzy of exploitation and evisceration of our planet. I do not hold out much hope until somehow this is eliminated exoterically, from the human consciousness.
P.R., I understand your feeling, but to "declare war" isn't going to do it. That is like the war on terror. War on concepts, like people, doesn't work.
The war paradigm is unsustainable. The way would be to create the alternatives and focus on our power as human beings. These guys are going to go down. Black holes always collapse.
Thanks readytotransform for your reply. I agree " these guys are going down ". But unfortunately, not in our lifetime.
Katrine, agreed. It has been thought of as the ability to control others and to destroy, as far as having 'power' is concerned.
I have come to believe it means the ability to 'create' what has never been thought of before. If you think about it, creativity is the ultimate power.

The ONLY way that corporations can operate this way in by ownership of the political mechanism.
And this leads, ultimately, to their funding of multi- multi million dollar campaigns and platoons of lobbyists. 100% public financing of political campaigns, in which platforms were presented on an ACTUAL* "public radio/TV would change everything.

I agree with your public finance proposal. But, I think it is too late for anything but mega extinction of our species.
Reality is despair.
What is so frustrating is that public funding is obviously needed and, as this 2006 piece reposted by "Canadian Content" indicates, would be inexpensive.

Yes, a major extinction is underway and the human population continues its climb even as the Third World works its way toward Western lifestyles and consumption. But, as we used to say during the 60s (I'm old), "Today is the first day of the rest of our lives", and we have to work with what we've got. It would be well if we could forgive ourselves our past transgressions, learn from them and go on accordingly.
OFFER SOMETHING FOR NOTHING -- WILL FOLLOW YOU ANYWHERE
High Society knows that all of the people have always been most greedy and lazy, and that so long as a new something-for-nothing keeps the public a madding crowd chasing after some get-rich scheme, High Society will always be in power and control.
And so, to gain full power and control, all we need is a bigger and better then ever something-for-nothing, a new get-rich scheme grander then anything the rich have going.

If our society was the most greedy the world has ever known, then the upper half, the half most aggressive and wealthy, namely High Society, Country Club class and Educated Middle-class, they would be a voting majority that in everyway enslaved the lower half.
And if so, then the voting majority, the 51% with great jobs, terrific homes and deluxe healthcare, they would not be fooled in the slightest by all the political campaign fiction being broadcast. Then such campaign fiction is just for lower class consumption, to make them all feel so hopeless that they don’t even go to the polls. Then that would explain why half of voters hardly ever show up at the poles. For only a fool among the lower class wastes time voting for his next set of dictators.
John_Ellis: We're in full agreement on the solution: 100% public financing of political campaigns... Regardless, I must take issue with your "Light" and, to the degree possible, will use your words.
Our society is the most greedy the world has ever known. The upper 10-20%, the wealthy oligarchs, have in every way enslaved the lower-class 80-90% majority.
Such being so, the voting majority, the 80-90% who are losing jobs and homes and have crappy or no health insurance, should wake up and realize that the political campaign fiction being broadcast by the ruling Oligarchs, their capitalist-tool executives and their corporate media, has been professionally designed for the express purpose of dividing, conquering and thus disempowering the lower class 80-90% majority... to make them vote for either the Democrat or Republican candidate, both of whom are already owned and operated by and for the 10-20% minority. Actually, i don't really know if bp ever completed that relief well. I am well aware of the horrors that have been unleashed, but i never heard any word on what the so-called 'word' is regarding the 'stopping' of the gusher. And i am referring to the msm version. Not a word have i heard.
Could someone let me know, please?
Thanks.

O.K. i just looked it up. Very synchronistic if i do say so myself.
Now bp is not definite about the 'relief well' and they are doing some very iffy work with the blow out preventor as i speak. There was much info. out there today, it turns out.

"Most of [Greenland's] citizens currently view the prospect of major oil revenues as mouth-watering.... Oil money could replace the [annual Danish subsidy] and give the country independence from its Danish overlords."
What makes these people think they can escape the fate of all the other small, poor countries that have struck oil? They'd be much better off banning all oil development in their territory.
It's nothing short of criminal that all these Arctic countries are bent on drilling in the Arctic, instead of putting in a moratorium on drilling or other kinds of exploration as in place in Antarctica. I've commented on Denmark's shameful role in sabotaging the climate change negotiations, despite being the host country for the Copenhagen meeting of COP-15 last year:
"Danish Warship Blocks Greenpeace Arctic Oil Protest"
http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/08/23-8
And here we see Norway's StatOil competing to drill off Greenland. That shouldn't be a big surprise, since StatOil is already in Alberta, producing oil from the tar sands. All this is only more proof that certain countries have no intention of changing the way they do business, notwithstanding the window dressing in the form of a few wind mills here and there. It's also proof that some people do not want to achieve development through an honest day's work, but instead would rather rely on exploiting the natural resources with no regard to the environmental consequences. And yet, would want to be considered as "respectable" and "civilized" and all that. And if some country is forced to make do without much oil and live within its ecological means, like Cuba, it is trashed by smug people who do not realize or want to admit what it takes to support their own lifestyle. It's too bad that Greenland has no leader that can say to the people to face the challenge of achieving a decent life without repeating the mistakes of others. Considering that the population is only 57,000, it's all the more SHAMEFUL.
Do not fear the disaster, welcome it. The sociopathic fundamentalist capitalists have the money and power to do as they wish. The sooner they ruin everything the sooner a sufficient number of minds can focus on a rebirth. Nothing will change without massive numbers of citizens having the foresight to put their lives on the line now instead of waiting until the disaster takes place. There is absolutely no chance of that happening with the tuned out and selfish American citizenry. So sit back and watch the planet be plundered. Too few really care enough to change things.
Drilling for more oil allows the rich to survive a little longer in the warming world. There is already enough oil reserves to burn, which added to current coal consumption, will eventually result in catastrophic global warming, that is the full ice melt, expanded oceans, and six degrees Centigrade plus. On the current course, most of humanity will be wiped out. Climate conditions will be so severe , any survivors will need to evolve into something else. Perhaps genetically modified organism corporations will face a real technical challenge.
Bacteria evolved in and are adapted to many extreme environments; hydrothermal vents, frozen soils, anoxic sediments, acid mine drainage, etc. DNA and life will survive with or without us. How's that for optimism?
EVENTS influence change.

Actually life is evil, as the purpose of this world is to reach the ultimate conclusion of evil. And we will know when that happens, for then all things will turn toward the good.
Take care, for forgiveness like patience can be the rotted fruit of indifference.

Many thanks to our resident Manichean. Total Good vs. Total Evil. 51% vs. 49%. There is nothing else to discuss. TEN COMMANDMENTS
5. Honor the values of your father, and preserve the dignity of your mother. So that harmless may you be, and by this have life eternal, being heir to the earth made new that the Lord your God will grant to you.
6. Do not take the life of any human or unborn baby, or in anyway contribute to their death.
7. Do not adulterate your brain and emotions by having sex with another man's wife.
8. No one shall enrich themselves upon the misery of another, for this is the fundamental principle of all law.
9. Do not be deceitful to a neighbor, your witness that of a liar.
10. This day of life you do not deserve, be grateful for it. Otherwise you will be deluded into thinking you deserve more, and this is the root cause of all evil. For never should you lust after the wife of your neighbor, nor desire enviously the house of your neighbor, nor desire to steal his land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Exodus 20:15 IGV

I did not ask to be born, and frankly I'm pretty pissed about it. But now that I have been brought here against my will I do damn well deserve to live this day of life.
