Glenn Beck Turns MLK’s Dream to Nightmare on Anniversary
August 28 marks the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and while crowds gather to celebrate the anniversary in Washington, DC, they’ll be joined by an unlikely visitor: Glenn Beck.
Glenn Beck. (Photo: Creative Commons/Gage Skidmore) The talk show host plans to use the occasion
to hold his own “Restoring Honor” rally with Sarah Palin to celebrate
US troops. And he’ll also make a speech that he’s calling, “I Have a
Plan.” Beck insists his rally isn’t a political ploy, but a way to
simply pay homage to the troops.
“There will be absolutely no politics involved,” Beck told the Washington Post earlier this month. “This rally will honor the troops, unite the American people under the principles of integrity and truth, and make a pledge to restore honor within ourselves and our country.”
According to 9 News Now, activists and organizations like the National Urban League, the NAACP and Rev. Al Sharpton, will be holding a countermarch from Dunbar High School to the future site of the Martin Luther King memorial on Ohio Drive. Mike Morial, president of the National Urban League said, “When we heard he was going to hold his own rally we knew we had to respond…All Americans are a part of the dream but that dream should not be politicized.”
To counter Beck’s rally, a group of artists will erect a 40 foot statue to memorialize the legendary civil rights leader. On a website, the activists lay out their claims:
We don’t intend to let Beck or any other demagogues belittle the Dream, which is alive in the hearts and deeds of millions of Americans. We are providing an alternative for those who refuse to listen to his lies. While Beck rants, we will celebrate - and defend - Dr. King’s legacy and vision with a striking art installation on the National Mall featuring the words and images of King.

Show AllGlenn Beck: This is not a political ploy but a way to pay homage to me er... I mean to the troops. Beck and Sarah: dumb and dumber!
No...It's dumb and dumberer!
It's dumb and dummer (sic).
Dumbos
Perhaps we should be a little more tolerant of these two creatures. They overcame great obstacles (3rd grade, etc.) to develop the absolute conviction that ignorance is no excuse for not knowing it all.
“For years I labored with the idea of reforming the existing institutions of society, a little change here, a little change there. Now I feel quite differently. I think you’ve got to have a reconstruction of the entire society...a radical redistribution of political and economic power.”
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
yes, he wasn't shot for nothing...he was stirring deep waters...
thank you for that quote, I hadn't heard it...
That is excellent.
Thank you.
Exactly.
Where's the sensitivity BS about the 911 families; Oh I see, there are no feelings in the AA comunity, no one will be disturbed by Beck and Palin Farce on Dr Kings day. I always believed the planet earth was the insane asylum of the universe, now I am convinced.
I always believed the planet earth was the insane asylum of the universe...
No, mostly the insanity is limited to the middle-segment of what the upright apes call "North America".
The top 1% of North Americans are the insane apes running the circus.
Sabocat,
The earth is a sphere and thus no longitudinal "middle section" objectively exists. Just because all the maps on the wall of your school had the Americas in the middle doesn't make it so.
And by insanity you mean "out of touch with reality", no? Now about "Reality"...
Maybe a riot and open fighting in the streets will clear the air a bit -- or maybe not, but it doesn't seem all that unlikely with such provocation. We don't have much long hot summer left for this sort of thing and it's been rather quiet so far.
Not what MLK would have approved of, but I have to admit I wouldn't mind seeing Beck with a bloodied nose. Do him good! Restore a bit of humility to him! :-D
I guess mostly I'm just really fed up with all this crap.
Every time I hear anyone open their mouths and start talking about God and the Bible I want to puke!!!!
Try reading another book. In my America, God is something that is allowed to be worshiped , protected by constitution rights, but it is also my right to have the opinion that you right wing religious wack jobs better keep your distance and beliefs to your selves, you have no right to judge me or my life because I have read more books than you and refuse to base my life on meaningless words of voodoo and invisible men in the skys, if you ask me, your all crazy, not me.
As a victim of right wing republican Christian gang stalking or the " Christian Mafia" aka The Family,,,, for three years 24/7 ,,,, their intent was to drive me crazy and push me towards committing suicide or a criminal act which would put me in jail,,,
I say ,,,, shut down all churches and investigate ASAP,,, these people are out control,,,
They have infiltrated our government, police force, military , first responder networks,,,
They are rat fink spys , and torture freaks, and work for an evil corporate America that has deep pockets and a global agenda.
They have been told that Christians will rule the world, fools, they are being used , and will be discarded when the time is right, and mercenary army's can replace them.
But in the mean time , the DOJ and the supreme court are turning a blind eye to nation wide organized gang stalking, there are 1000s of reports on the web about this activity, this is a dangerous nation wide group of torture freaks that operate with the blessing of the authority's.
Glen Beck is just another idiot that squawk about God, not realizing that the wacko religious right are using God to destroy our country and kill people.
Useless comment.
DustMite:"Useless comment."
Well stated, Family Member.
Is that you my Mexacali Rose?
DustMite - do you come here because no one in real life will talk to you.
Are ya just lonely, my lil friend?
Try making a real comment sometimes.
You guys get a room already!
Cut him some slack.
Useful comment!
We went from "I have a dream" to I have a taxcut.
I have to say there seem to be a lot of people concerned about a little man with a small audience, someone that depends on sensationalism, appeals to one side of racists and needs conflict to survive.
MLK wouldn't even feel the bump in the road this guy makes.
DustMite says: "I have to say there seem to be a lot of people concerned about a little man with a small audience, someone that depends on sensationalism, appeals to one side of racists and needs conflict to survive."
I think similar remarks were heard in the early 30's...applied to another little man with small audiences in Bavaria.
Beck certainly is no Furher, and may not even be human...there are reports of cloning experiments creating Pig/Jackass hybrids. He seems to be one of the first aborted fetuses to have survived by living under a rock until fully (dis)formed.
Other than that, your comments are as devoid of substance as the vacuum of outer space...as usual, if I may say.
You compliments are enjoyed as usual! Make a real comment sometime.
There maybe should be some concern 'about that little man with a small audience' which could be construed as a part of the machinery that 'repeats lies and obfuscations enough that those members of the msm's well cultivated dumbstream garden WILL believe and carry forth the message' of sinister inaneness.
Is the Alaska bombshell cuter...sure. Shes also younger!
But I'll have to pass on Master Beck's speech/BS/Horsefeathers blather.
I can just picture you glued to the screen, soaking up his every word!! (LOL)
I only think that intelligent women are sexy.
Oops! Sarah is no longer sexy.
Palin is so hot!
How can a tumorhead be hot? And it just keeps growing.
The Dream speech is still a worthy review, but in general I agree...plus, I do believe King himself turned the Dream into a revelation of humanity's true ongoing Nightmare with his Riverside speech; which I like to call his Declaration of Independence From War(at least in the forms it's currently fought).
I think that all the MLK/peace supporters should go and listen to Beck/Palin.
It would freak out all of the Beck/Palin mindless minions.
Maybe we should try to be their friend and promote understanding.
MLK's niece is a speaker @ this rally also. No one every mentions that. Is she not an important part of the community? She has been on Glenn Beck's show.
I have learned more about our US history from Glenn Beck than I ever learned in school. Please go back and watch some of the programs. He uses actual documentation, sometimes hand written history. Do you know that there were black men holding political office in the White House, prior to President Wilson? He changed OUR worlds, black/caucasion, asian/latino all of us were influenced.
I wish people would take a step back, ask a lot of questions, react after education. There is no name calling amongst mature debaters. Knowledge is power. Glenn Beck encougages Americans to read history, investigate, and to challange him if you think he speaks lies.
Freedom for us to speak is what makes this country free, we should all have the same goal, keeping our freedom.
Who is taking our freedom away?
What is "freedom"?
Having watched Beck I would agree he indeed uses history, but I suggest that his interpretation might be a little off. You might want to investigate his "history" a bit farther.
DustMite - I see your latest screen incarnation is as a woman (freewoman). How is that working for ya?...panties riding up?... still no one to talk to?
PLEASE adjust your medication daily.
If you want history, listen to Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Michael Parenti, Ilan Pappe, John Perkins and Chalmers Johnson -- not a clown like Glenn Beck.
word.
And William Blum
Regarding MLK's niece, No one here is suggesting that black USAns are somehow immune to being adherents of right-wing reaction - even if they are kin of MLK. There are plenty of right-wing blacks out there - including stealth ones like the current US president.
Exactly: one of the most poignant moments of my political life came on the 40th anniversary of the launching of King's Dream rhetoric in Detroit 2 months before the DC event. There was Martin Luther King III on stage with prominent local/national leaders of the NAACP, and in June of 2003, as Hussein's statue was being pulled down, all they could come up with was: "Let's go to Washington and get our fair share of the spoils."
As far as I can tell the remaining King family has sold out to not rocking the boat and the corporate world in order to make personal money marketing "The Brand", as well as for building a statue and memorial in DC. I never hear anything from the King's or the NAACP about building a new society or any links to poverty and the gross amounts of money spent on the war machine. So I'm hoping Beck will help foster a conversation on Martin Luther King Jr's deeper message and for what he sacrificed his life - the King's could use that, and so could the NAACP and the rest of America....including our current beloved president: Barack! "You're no MLK" -- "Give back that Peace Prize!" -- yeah: it's definitely time to stop judging people by the color of their skin and the sound of their name, but by their character actions.
So you're not familiar with his lies and spewing hatred?
hue-
can't you see you are being trolled?
Start listening to Thom Hartmann. You'll learn a whole lot more, like compassion.
