Netanyahu: US Easily Manipulated
A recently-revealed tape has shown Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, discussing ways to undermine the Oslo Accords and calling the United States "easy" to manipulate.
The video was shot in 2001, apparently without Netanyahu's knowledge [Channel 10] The video was filmed in 2001, apparently without Netanyahu's
knowledge, during a meeting with Israeli settlers in the occupied West
Bank. It aired on Friday night on Israel's Channel 10, and several
translations have been posted online.
At one point on the tape, Netanyahu threatens a "broad attack" against the Palestinian Authority.
"The main thing, first of all, is to hit them. Not just one blow, but blows that are so painful that the price will be too heavy to be borne," Netanyahu said. "A broad attack on the Palestinian Authority."
The tape was shot during the early stages of the second intifada, when violence between Israelis and Palestinians was escalating. Netanyahu was speaking with settlers who lost family members to Palestinian attacks.
Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister at the time, had recently deployed additional Israeli troops in the West Bank.
Undermining the Oslo Accords
Netanyahu - who did not hold political office when the recording was made - was dismissive of the United States, calling it easily manipulated.
"I know what America is," Netanyahu said. "America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won't get in the way."
Netanyahu also spoke extensively about undermining the Oslo Accords, the agreement signed in 1993 which set a framework for future Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
The Oslo Accords specified that Israel would be allowed to keep "military zones" in the West Bank in any future agreement with the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu told the settlers he would use that loophole to retain large portions of Palestinian territory.
"I'm going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the '67 borders," he said.
"How do we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I'm concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone."
In the recording, Netanyahu described Bill Clinton - the former US president who helped to negotiate the accords - as "radically pro-Palestinian".

If it ever happens, that the American people realize the truth about 9/11, and understand Israel's role in orchestrating these attacks, then yes - there will be vicious anti-semitism.
So you're asserting that 9/11 was a Jewish conspiracy and you're threatening Jews with anti-Semitism and hate crimes.
Nope. Re-read what he wrote, then stop the mud slinging.
If people feel threatened by the truth, then that's there problem.
Let's look at the facts and consider the evidence, beginning with the controlled demolition of WTC7.
Question: Is Larry Silverstein a Muslim? Did Larry Silverstein allow Muslims into his buildings to plant the explosive charges that resulted in the controlled demolition of WTC7 that occurred at 5:20 pm on 9/11? Not likely.
Back up from that. Look at the transaction by which ownership/control of the twin towers were transferred from public to private (non-muslim) control. Six weeks prior to demolition. Were muslims involved in that? Probably not. In fact, definitely not.
Unless Larry Silverstein is a muslim, or part of a great muslim conspiracy, then I fail to see how 9/11 could possibly have been anything other than a " Jewish conspiracy" to use your term.
This isn't about anti-semitism. It's about Muslims being punished for a crime they didn't commit.
And IYSO, Jews should be punished instead.
So you're a dick who likes to twist people's words and then shout "Hate Crime!"
Israel was definitely involved in 9/11. This is becoming apparent to the American people and the American military.
One day soon, the Israeli Firsters will be swept from power and be lucky to get a job delivering pizza with Jack Abramoff.
in the meantime 1...from uri avnery: the "israeli" "gov't"...
No doubt can remain that Kahanism – the Israeli version of fascism – has moved from the margin to center stage.
Recently, the country witnessed a scene that looked like something from the parliament of South Korea or Japan.
On the Knesset speaker’s rostrum stood MK Haneen Zoabi of the Arab nationalist Balad faction and tried to explain why she had joined the Gaza aid flotilla that had been attacked by the Israeli navy. MK Anastasia Michaeli, a member of the Lieberman party, jumped from her seat and rushed to the rostrum, letting out blood-curdling shrieks, waving her arms, in order to remove Haneen Zoabi by force. Other members rose from their seats to help Michaeli. Near the speaker, a threatening crowd of Knesset members gathered. Only with great difficulty did the ushers succeed in saving Zoabi from bodily harm. One of the male members shouted at her, in a typical mixture of racism and sexism: “Go to Gaza and see what they will do to a 41-year-old unmarried woman!”
One could not imagine a greater contrast than that between the two MKs. While Haneen Zoabi belongs to a family whose roots in the Nazareth area go back centuries, perhaps to the time of Jesus, Anastasia Michaeli was born in (then) Leningrad. She was elected “Miss St. Petersburg” and then became a fashion model, married an Israeli, converted to Judaism, immigrated to Israel at age 24 but sticks to her very Russian first name. She has given birth to eight children. She may be a candidate for the Israeli Sarah Palin, who, after all, was also once a beauty queen.
As far as I could make out, not a single Jewish member raised a finger to defend Zoabi during the tumult. Nothing but some half-hearted protest from the speaker, Reuven Rivlin, and a Meretz member, Chaim Oron.
In all the 61 years of its existence, the Knesset had not seen such a sight. Within a minute the sovereign assembly turned into a parliamentary lynch mob.
One does not have to support the ideology of Balad to respect the impressive personality of Haneen Zoabi. She speaks fluently and persuasively, has degrees from two Israeli universities, fights for the rights of women within the Israeli-Arab community, and is the first female member of an Arab party in the Knesset. Israeli democracy could be proud of her. She belongs to a large Arab extended family. The brother of her grandfather was the mayor of Nazareth, one uncle was a deputy minister, and another was a Supreme Court judge. (Indeed, on my first day in the Knesset I proposed that another member of the Zoabi family be elected as speaker.)
This week, the Knesset decided by a large majority to adopt a proposal by Michael Ben-Ari, supported by Likud and Kadima members, to strip Haneen Zoabi of her parliamentary privileges. Even before, Interior Minister Eli Yishai had asked the legal adviser to the government for approval of his plan to strip Zoabi of her Israeli citizenship on the grounds of treason. One of the Knesset members shouted at her: “You have no place in the Israeli Knesset! You have no right to hold an Israeli identity card!”
Fascinating account of Israeli "democracy"!
"I know what America is," Netanyahu said. "America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won't get in the way."
congratulations USA!! You are officially Israel's bitch.
Evil as his comments are, Netanyahu is probably right. The fact is, the US has always been easy to manipulate as far as the Israelis and their lobby are concerned.
Thank you guernica for your great post.
So many folks in America have purchased wholesale quantities of the the current Israeli government's garbage about the democratic nature of the political society, law and legal culture that is supposedly found inside of Israel's modern boundaries.
I dug back into the archives and started reading:
The unJewish state: the politics of Jewish identity in Israel
By Akiva Orr-available on Google books-unusual-almost the whole book can be read. The author shows the developing roots of the Israeli state moving from a secular, non sectarian government (for real!) to one constrained by no known boundaries of sectarianism and religious bigotry.
Particularly interesting is Chapter three (Daniel in the Zionist Den) that discusses one Oswald Rufeisen, a Polish Jew who converted to Catholicism during WWII and then emigrated to Israel in 1958. He tried to become a naturalized citizen and the government refused to recognize him as a Jew, the Supreme Court, in the most Byzantine of rulings, agreed that he was not really a Jew even though he was birthed by a Jewish woman.
The Israeli government has not seen the light of day since then.
Do we have somebody on this board who actually understand what's being said? How do I know the translation is correct?
Can somebody who speaks israeli help and confirm here?
Thanks
I had similar thoughts. They are speaking Hebrew (btw, not Israeli) and Al Jazeera, I have found, is not a reliable source (for example -- they communicated the wrong tally on the number of dead in the ship deployment for many days -- and after it was well known the real figures -- plus, they used a number (19) based on Islamic mysticism and deliberately gauged to appeal to irrational sentiments -- *This is a message from Allah about Israel* etc ).
How 'bout some English subtitles throughout? So readers can judge for themselves and with their own rational minds? The few we read in subtitles are presented out of context. Also, I had the feeling that his statement described as "contemptous" was intended to assuage this family's concerns about U.S. support.
Not to mention the fact that the writers/t.v. producers are not people in a position to speak about how horrendous it is to have "contempt" for the U.S. Seeing as they exemplify that position rather consistently.
I think the link from the previous poster should dispel all your "concerns".
That's what you think.

Perhaps now would be a good time to re-examine how FDR obtained the nearly permanent cooperation of the House Of Saud---and maybe see "Lawrence of Arabia" a few more times to be reminded of the Romance of the Middle East.
FDR and Churchill. Months in the White House together. England bankrupt. Five years or so later, there came Bretton-Woods (New Hampshire?!) to rewrite International Finance to enable the U.S. to buy up World Debt on the cheap. After all, we won the war. Right?
How's that mortgage workin out for you these days? Still got a job? And where the hell are the unions? Did the bursting of the housing/real-estate bubble kill the Electrical Workers?
Is the outsourcing of government jobs still going on under Obama as it was under Dubya thus undermining unions and job security (which can also mean bureaucratic continuity. Have you asked for a copy of your birth certificate lately!?).
I suspect that I agree with Seventhson here:
"Bibi finally speaks the truth . . ."
The U.S. is a cacophony of competing capitalist interests, while Israel APPEARS to have an abiding goal, even as it has NO Constitution, and NO internationally recognized borders to which it adheres.
My bet is that "Bibi" can speak about 20 words in Arabic and maybe 15 in Farsi or Urdu, because early on his first order was to speak impeccable American. Not even Philadelphia was going to do that for him.
I'll give him this: at least he doesn't sound like Tony Blair!
I would love to hear a single day of NPR without some superior Brit accent pronouncing to what we Yankees should pay attention.
Also, for my own part, I'd love to visit Iran, a country that strikes me from all I have read and seen as uniquely beautiful.
Including the people.
Please, end the madness. End the hate. End the stupidity that surrounds us. Capitate the military machine and replace it with Green Energy jobs globally.
One needs to believe that it is "not too late," but there can come a time, as MLK observed of our dry bones. (Sun-whitened bones, regardless of the color of the skin. Bleached bones.)
Record heat here Saturday (later today). Record humidity (can the Dew Point exceed the humidity level? Probably not, while it can approach 100 per cent).
Recall pre-Katrina Chicago, when hundreds died during a heat-wave... Meanwhile, could Couric at CBS take a moment out of reporting record floods in Milwaukee to remind of the political trial in Illinois? We all now know what flooded cars look like. Could we see some honest reporting from Illinois?
