'Collateral Murder': Wikileaks Reveals Video Showing US Air Crew Shooting Down Iraqi Civilians
Footage of July 2007 attack made public as Pentagon identifies website as threat to national security
A secret video showing US air crew falsely claiming to have encountered a firefight in Baghdad and then laughing at the dead after launching an air strike that killed a dozen people, including two Iraqis working for Reuters news agency, was revealed by Wikileaks today.
The footage of the July 2007 attack was made public in a move that will further anger the Pentagon, which has drawn up a report identifying the whistleblower website as a threat to national security. The US defence department was embarrassed when that confidential report appeared on the Wikileaks site last month alongside a slew of military documents.
The release of the video from Baghdad also comes shortly after the US military admitted that its special forces attempted to cover up the killings of three Afghan women in a raid in February by digging the bullets out of their bodies.
The newly-released video of the Baghdad attacks was recorded on one of two Apache helicopters hunting for insurgents on 12 July 2007. Among the dead were a 22-year-old Reuters photographer, Namir Noor-Eldeen, and his driver, Saeed Chmagh, 40. The Pentagon blocked an attempt by Reuters to obtain the video through a freedom of information request. Wikileaks director Julian Assange said his organisation had to break through encryption by the military to view it.
In the recording, the helicopter crews can be heard discussing the scene on the street below. One American claims to have spotted six people with AK-47s and one with a rocket-propelled grenade. It is unclear if some of the men are armed but Noor-Eldeen can be seen with a camera. Chmagh is talking on his mobile phone.
One of the helicopter crew is then heard saying that one of the group is shooting. But the video shows there is no shooting or even pointing of weapons. The men are standing around, apparently unperturbed.
The lead helicopter, using the moniker Crazyhorse, opens fire. "Hahaha. I hit 'em," shouts one of the American crew. Another responds a little later: "Oh yeah, look at those dead bastards."
One of the men on the ground, believed to be Chmagh, is seen wounded and trying to crawl to safety. One of the helicopter crew is heard wishing for the man to reach for a gun, even though there is none visible nearby, so he has the pretext for opening fire: "All you gotta do is pick up a weapon." A van draws up next to the wounded man and Iraqis climb out. They are unarmed and start to carry the victim to the vehicle in what would appear to be an attempt to get him to hospital. One of the helicopters opens fire with armour-piercing shells. "Look at that. Right through the windshield," says one of the crew. Another responds with a laugh.
Sitting behind the windscreen were two children who were wounded.
After ground forces arrive and the children are discovered, the American air crew blame the Iraqis. "Well it's their fault for bringing kids in to a battle," says one. "That's right," says another.
Initially the US military said that all the dead were insurgents. Then it claimed the helicopters reacted to an active firefight. Assange said that the video demonstrated that neither claim was true.
"Why would anyone be so relaxed with two Apaches if someone was carrying an RPG and that person was an enemy of the United States?" he said. "The behaviour of the pilots is like a computer game. When Saeed is crawling, clearly unable to do anything, their response is: come on buddy, we want to kill you, just pick up a weapon ... It appears to be a desire to get a higher score, or a higher number of kills."
Wikileaks says it will shortly release a second secret US military video showing the deaths of civilians in an attack in Afghanistan. The Pentagon has been seeking ways to prevent classified material appearing on Wikileaks, including through "criminal sanctions". Wikileaks has made public classified US army reports on weapons, military units and battle strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Pentagon report, reflecting the depth of paranoia about where Wikileaks is obtaining its material, speculates that the CIA may be responsible. But perhaps most embarrassing leak for the US defence department was that of the 2008 report itself which appeared on the Wikileaks site last month.

Remember, 'ordinary Germans' were 'willing executioners' for what they wrongly assumed was 'their' Empire --- and that early, crude, visible Empire was at least called an EMPIRE.
But no EMPIRE ever has been 'their' Empire for the front-line cannon-fodder of Empires, nor have the civilian citizens caught in any EMPIRE ever been of the elite 'privilege level' to use the possessive case "their" in referring to an elite EMPIRE.
Not one in a hundred Americans can yet bear the reality of saying the world 'Empire', nor acknowledging that what they still think of as their 'country' has become the EMPIRE of an elite gang.
Hell, the "President-Emperors" (Andrew Bacevich's accurate term for); Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama, do not even whisper the word EMPIRE, the vaunted and most renowned US media of record; (NYT, Wash Post, NBC, CBS, ABC, let alone the EMPIRE's cheer-leaders) never even display this 'taboo' term of truth!
So, Kent, the soldiers involved, sucked in and destroyed by this hydra of death, will carry their own guilt and grief to be sure, but the senior most level of the EMPIRE, the plotters of wars of aggression, and mega-deaths, these are the 'leaders' (or in German, 'fuhrers') of this global corporate/financial/militarist EMPIRE for which the Nuremberg Tribunal and judgments aptly called the ultimate war crimes ---
"essentially an evil thing...to initiate a war of aggression...is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime, differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole."
EMPIRE leaves no one innocent ---- and global EMPIRE may well simply 'leave no one'.

As heinous an act as this was, I can't wish a slow, painful death on anyone. I simply won't stoop to that level.
The soldiers involved in this will undoubtedly (and hopefully) face their own demons. I hope they get help and recover their humanity.

The police dept. comment rings a bell.
In the last 6 months I have seen 2 police officier's here totally lose it and start screaming
and acting in a threatening manner to the public they are supposed to serve.
They were directing traffic at an accident scene and causing more problems that the accident obstruction. (2 separate occasions)
Having worked in the mental health field for years I recognize PTSD when I see it.
I assume that they are Vets only because there is relatively no crime where I live so nothing for an average cop to be so stressed out about.
I also asked a question of a security guy at Costco and he wouldn't turn his head to answer me. He demanded that I stand in front of him and re ask the question.
Another PTSD person. He looked scared and very nervous.
This is why I don't support the troops.
They have my compassion but I will do everything possible to talk a young man or woman out of going into the military and refuse to do the "Rah Rah you're a good American for fighting for our country" thingy. It just adds fuel to the fire.
The returning troops shouldn't be overtly dissed but they won't get any pats on the back from me.
I will support and encourage them to seek mental health treatment though.
I see these kids who have come back from the Mid East around my nighborhood...atill dressed in camouflage pants ... driving like maniacs. They scare me.
I went through the Viet Nam era, put my 18 yr old boyfriend on a plane to go Viet Nam
when neither of us knew where SoEast Asia was in the world. He came back a mess.
He had the love and support of his friends and soon joined the Vets against the War movement. But no one told him that he had done the right thing.
My country has carried on war against other countries for profit and resources almost my whole life and it gets old.
I have been paying attention and the fact that the Viet Nam Vets WERE NOT supported
did make a difference and scared the War Mongers for many years.

My comment was made out of deep anger and not well thought out. I'd like to thank Alan MacDonald for his well reasoned response. Sometimes this whole thing, these illegal wars and occupations anger me to the point of literal insanity.
The US army hirachy had access to the same video we just watched and made comments that contradict the facts, these people committed war crimes and then lied about it.
The question is, does Obama's administration have the balls or integrity to indict all involved for war crimes?
Or will it be like the United Nations that watched Israel launch phosphorus bomb attacks against innocent civilians and take no action even though this is against the Geneva Convention?

Alan, it is a shame there are so many of these empires in the world, USA, Russia, China and these are all run like the Mafia, from China's political elite being decended from previous leaders to a shared dislike basic freedom of information and reporting. Interesting that Wiki Leaks has been identifed as a national security threat by the Pentagon. A free source of information is not good when you want to control media to ensure it complies with your propaganda. Lets see how much media interest this story gets to prove the point.

In a word, No. I can remember when the Abu photos came out. Did the administration take action? Yes they did! They banned cameras quick smart, and no more of that bad publicity ever came out.
I fully expect Obama's "actions" to be just like that. They will act to ensure that no real war footage of atrocities comes out. But of course, the atrocities wont stop.
Here is a prime example of why the US government wants to quash the Goldstone report. We proud Amercans, at least at the government level, are guilty of war crimes. Just as much if not more than Isreal. So I can either be ashamed, or live in denial. It's not like the MSM will cover this to any acceptable level. I am sick of it! Who cares what Hollywood is doing? Who is bangin who, what the new fashion is in NY, what the most popular game show is?!?!! What happened to honer, dignity, integrity? Are there any moral values left? Disregarding the obvious ambiguity of "criminal sanctions", its seems like a lot of needless bother. Wouldn't a straightforward executive order from the imperial presidency save time? There are worse things happening over there that won't hit the news for years.
I talk to these kids and here's a couple of things that I have learned.
We are using limited nuclear warfare.
We have a tank that shoots out some kind of death ray that will instantly melt down a whole bus load of people to about the size of a volkswagon. The site is only "hot" for about 3 days.
We are using some kind of percussion bomb thing along with bacterial warfare that can stun a large area (3 sq miles) for 3 days and leaves the people there with a permanent i.q. of about 30.
Think about ot and demand that the truth be told and not hide behind the skirts of so called National Security.
Oh
And stop driving your freaking cars if you can...because that is what all this is about!
Sounds like some kind of directed energy particle beam. I remember early in the Iraq illegal invasion about one of these weapons. The writer said that it looked like lightning being discharged horizontally into a crowd of people.

This horrible video goes to show,that what the parents of troops serving in Afghanistan think of their sons or daughters "gallant service and self sacrifice" many of them are murderers as shown in the video. The crew of that helicopter murdered nine people and possibly two children in cold blood. And they were proud of the fact!! The children, after being wounded by machine gun fire could not possibly survive, so add those two to the list of the dead.
Afghanistan is covered with blood of innocents and the people responsible will never wash their hands of it. May they all burn in hell...........and the beat goes on.

Hving just watched the video, the pure rage that I feel is almost overpowering. I have been against the Iraq and Afghanistan wars since their corrupt inception by the mad-dog Bush/Cheney/Rumseld cabal, but this carries my anger to new heights...and depths, I believe.
I am an Obama supporter, but his continuaton of all this rabid and vile warfare, killing for the sake of killing, if you will, is absolutely unsupportable and immoral. While there are "good" military personnel out there in these places continuing the killing of apparently whomever under whatever circumstances is unforgiveable. It is sad in a way that I have lost whatever faith and respect I once had for the military...and I'm a veteran.
Glad to see more people waking up. I too voted for Obama, so i feel a special obligation to speak out now that he has duplicated Bush's crimes.

I teach Conrad's _The Heart of Darkness_ every year to senior high AP kids. Part of my presentation has been _Apocalypse Now_ since it parallels the story and even has the same names for characters. This class was criticized locally because I was exposing kids to the propaganda of Martin Sheen. But this video presents the same scene as Willard's crew killing the Vietnamese boat people they randomly came across and falsely feared.
Support our troops? I hope Mr. Obama does watch this release by Wikileaks--as well as other videos we don't even know about. I hope Mr. Obama will be condemned and repudiated for his West Point and his Oslow speeches and for all the blood on his hands.

I stopped at 6 minutes. I could not take it. It was not just the sight of the murdered people on the ground..it was the chatter of those FRICKING pilots, laughing , joking and lying about the murders they had just committed. These guys are psychopaths.
I expect there will be people why "denied" this happen and we will still get those people who suggest it "out of the ordinary".
The chit chat and chatter back and forth shows this is ORDINARY to those doing the shooting. The tone is one that suggest this something that happens each and every day...oh ...hum.

It is clear that the Pentagram is THE threat to our National Security! We need to remove all of these homocidal looting liars from political office. For our own survival. This film is like the opening scenes of George Orwell's 1984.
Irregardless of discussions about the validity of the reasons behind the conflict a war was and is happening.
An air support unit identified a group of people that definitely had assault rifles and objects that were easily interpreted as RPGs. This was not an obvious group of civilians.
Having seen the footage there's no way to claim that the aircrew knew that the suspected RPGs were cameras, or that there were children in the minivan. The resolution is simply too poor for that level of interpretation.
The suggestion that the "evil" attitudes displayed are a result of brainwashing is condescending and ill founded. The training soldiers receive helps us do our job but we are here because we want to be and doing what we want to do. We kill people for a living...get over it or do something about it. We are active agents for change within our environment: all you do is talk, anonymously.
It is unfortunate that this happened but the video evidence supports the interpretation that a group of people bearing quite definite hallmarks of a small assault group of insurgents was dealt with efficiently. The firing was not indiscriminate and followed rules of engagement.
