Louisiana Sheriff Trains Volunteers for 'Project Exodus' to Combat Terrorism
'There's not a state of paranoia, or anything like that'
A Louisiana sheriff has begun training 200 local volunteers in basic hand-to-hand combat techniques as part of Project Exodus aimed at protecting the northwestern corner of the state from the danger of terrorists, the Shreveport Times reports.
Reporter Drew Pierson writes that Bossier Parish Sheriff Larry Deen's policing plan involves "a mostly white group of ex-police volunteers and a .50-caliber machine gun" and was inspired in part from the Book of Exodus in the Bible.
"The buck stops with Larry Deen," the sheriff says, according to the Times. "The liability stops with Larry Deen. I am the chief law enforcement officer in this parish, and it is incumbent upon me protect all of the people in it." Deen rejects any notion that he is setting up a militia. "We run from that word," he says. "We're just the opposite that word."
Doyle Dempsey, chief deputy for support services, says in the training video that if the project is successful "we will be ahead of the curve when it comes to fighting Islamic extremists."
The volunteers will be equipped with shotguns, riot shields and batons, the newspaper says. A .50-caliber machine gun will be mounted on what the sheriff's office calls "the war wagon."
Five of the 200 volunteers are black, the Times says. Women will be used only in a "support role," Deen says, indicating non-combat activity.
The teams of "highly trained volunteers" would be used to protect food, water, oil, gas and medical supplies in the event of a disaster, like Hurricane Katrina, in which state and federal resources are limited.
"We want to make sure that never happens here," he says.
Deen elaborates on Operation Exodus on his website here.
An excerpt:
As evidenced by recent terror threats, it is apparent that homegrown terrorists are in our midst. With the easy accessibility of the Internet, it is quite possible that these local and international terrorists can form a national or multiple location attack on our nation at any given moment. And no matter whether we are a direct target or not, fear and panic will still permeate our community. Control will have to be regained to ensure the safety of our residents. That is where Operation Exodus comes into play. It utilizes preventive measures to safeguard Bossier Parish from the fear and outcry that will inevitably transpire.
Update at 1:26 p.m. ET: TPM Muckraker's Zachary Roth reports sheriff's office spokesman Ed Baswell told him that there have been intelligence reports showing that there have been "cells" and people operating within the parish "that have been trained as terrorists or went overseas to be trained as terrorist."
"It tells us that these are the kinds of thing we can't assume are happening far, far away," Basell said. "Terrorists can tend to strike anywhere and everywhere."
"There's not a state of paranoia, or anything like that," he added.

Show AllAh - the usual American response to a crisis: kill everyone who looks different.
"Doyle Dempsey, chief deputy for support services, says in the training video that if the project is successful 'we will be ahead of the curve when it comes to fighting Islamic extremists.'"
I feel safer already knowing that a bunch of "mostly white" crackers will be protecting me from "Islamic Extremists." But somewhere in the back of my brain is the lingering quesion: Who is going to protect me against Christian extremists, who are armed with a 50-calibre machine gun?
"'It tells us that these are the kinds of thing we can't assume are happening far, far away,' Basell said. 'Terrorists can tend to strike anywhere and everywhere.'" Yeah, and if you don't believe him, ask one of his buddies in the Klu Klux Klan at the next cross-burning.
"'There's not a state of paranoia, or anything like that,' he added." No, no, nothing like that.
I sure am glad that these brownshirt wannabes are not my neighbors. Scared + stupid = patriot. I'll bet they wish had that 50 cal. right after Katrina, just think of how many "looters" they could have eliminated. All these meat puppets need now is a Fuhrer. YOO ESS AY! YOO ESS AY!!
You said it
This is real Americana! There are millions of right wing religious and racist morons on full alert to save us from Obama.
The stooges for the power elites in Loosana are traitors to their own working class doing the dirty work of those in power there and else where and to the detriment of the working class everywhere which is what fascism always is. I F Stone once aptly pointed out that the US South "would either become a bastion of democracy or a bastion of fascism." Clearly it has become a bastion of fascism with these "Christian" fascists, and I use the word "Christian" very loosely having nothing in common with the prince of peace.
They "preach" fear and hatred of the "others" all the time to inflame the worst emotions.

"I am the chief law enforcement officer in this parish, and it is incumbent upon me protect all of the people in it."
Yeah, ALL of the WHITE people. The rest of the people better watch out.
What a bunch of ASSHOLES!
Perfect description. When I watched this video, I just had to laugh. What a bunch of maroons. If those fat motherfuckers ever tried to engage someone in hand to hand combat, they would probably keel over from a heart attack from over exertion. Lol...as I understand, it is now an insult in some countries to be called an American. Couldn't imagine why.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over,”
“Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same for any country."
Herman Goering to Gustave Gilbert at Nuremberg, 18 April, 1946

These guys wrote the playbook, this government is running the plays. Bungholes like the article above are some of the players.
Just out of curiosity, how many of you posters actually live in Louisiana? Or a neighboring state? Anyone? Maybe the guy who knew Shreveport is nearby?
Guns and hunting are part of the culture down here in the southern states. For God's sake the citizen militia is what our country was founded upon and how we fought most wars until WW2 as I understand things. We as a nation haven't had a large standing military until the last couple generations. Gun-toting citizens were who we called up to war as needed in the past. Given the vast federal deficit and screaming on this site about the MIC, imperialism, etc, you should be arguing for a well-trained militia of citizens! Then we could really reduce Pentagon spending and reduce our standing forces to levels sufficient to respond to ONE hot-spot in the world at a time.
If we didn't have the standing military do you think we could have gone into Iraq after Afghanistan? How many Americans said, oh no, not me, I don't want to be drafted! The point is if there had been a real threat of the draft because we had a tiny/small/limited standing army, the President/G.W.Bush couldn't just decide to declare war just because he wanted to. The citizen soldiers/voters would be a WHOLE lot less gung-ho about racing to war knowing they were a raffle-ticket away from suiting up and getting shot at.
Look, it's completely asinine for these guys to think they're going to have a terrorist problem. It's likely they just used terrorism as a justification to get DHS grants to buy the cool "toys" they were showing off. Problem is that it shows how these guys are misappropriating funds. Bossier parish is far more likely to suffer a weather related emergency event than a terrorist attack. The funds spent on their toys and training would have been better used to buy water purification systems, backup utility plants, and emergency response systems to distribute food, water, and medical care after an event.
Just saying some of you seem focused on race, and some of you sound like you haven't ever visited the southern states and that you're forming your thoughts based on movies like "Mississippi Burning". There's a bigger picture than one community center of guys with big toys showing off.
* Full disclosure, I'm sure I'd have posted right along in thread with you guys when I was raised/living in CA. After having lived in Oregon and TX, I have seen/heard/lived the other arguments. I don't believe guns are bad, and I do very much believe I'd rather have a gun that not have one during an emergency event like an earthquake, hurricane, etc. More than a gun I'd prefer to have solar power backup, and a generator behind it, as well as food and water supplies for my family for a month. Just saying...
Flame on, I can take it.
P.S. I love the irony of their little armored vehicle being a fuel guzzler. Go ahead and drive it around and send more oil money to the terrorist. REAL smart...
Good post ErikK,
But these aren't regular citizens according to the article. They're ex-cops. And they're not led by citizens, but by the oppressive police structure. And they don't want to end the wars or the MIC, that's not their stated intention as I read it.
By naming it project Exodus, it sounds more like they want a religious holy war to test out the "battlewagon". It sounds like they want to run anyone unChristian out of town at gunpoint. Or anyone else they deem a "Islamic terrorists/looter".
By pretending to protect the water supply, this gives them license to shoot anybody walking on any levy or river. No hearing. No trial. Just vigilante deputy justice like Blackwater committed in New Orleans after Katrina hit.
These Fat Bubbas are the "elite" of this crummy little parish. They want to protect their stuff from irate citizens who have been let down by the government (err... forgive me, I mean dark-skinned terrorists living amongst them, as they said.) Having lived in the south, I can assure you that anybody with a fat checkbook is given a deputy shield by the sheriff. That's just how it works down there.
That's my impression of it anyway. Of course I could be wrong.

"these aren't regular citizens according to the article. They're ex-cops. And they're not led by citizens, but by the oppressive police structure".
Ok fine, then I want to clarify I fully support the Second Amendment rights of all Americans. That means I and my neighbors can outnumber any of those yahoo's, regardless of their little truck (pretty sure my diesel motor home would pancake it). My original point is that we who read this site should consider becoming part of the militia, or at least obtaining some modicum of skill with a defensive weapon be it gun, knife, or baseball bat. These yahoos (if that's an apt description) can only operate outside of the law with no oversight during an emergency situation. During that scenario they can't bring their entire force to one spot so you and your neighbors can stand up to any inappropriate actions they might take (like disarming you under self-declared police power in violation of the Constitution). They won't be able to get backup and will just have to leave you and your neighbors to police yourselves. Is that good or bad? You decide, then consider whether in an emergency there's any chance the police could protect you if they wanted to (remember, they're too busy to provide backup...).
Project Exodus is almost the dumbest name ever, and completely insensitive.
Actually, during an emergency event I want any real security force be it law enforcement, military, or citizens protecting the water supply/electrical supply. Leaving them undefended prolongs the crisis (witness Iraqi problems with infrastructure security). The sooner water and electricity are restored after an emergency the quicker the average joe can recover. Whether there will be acts of vigilanteism or revenge or hate-based attacks against someone/some group during an emergency event isn't going to be group based (I would argue). You might have a few individuals or a small group do some illegal/unethical things but I would not believe you could organize that whole community center of 60+ individuals into one posse squad on a racist rampage as others in these comments have proposed.
Add "Jericho" DVD tv series to your Netflix queue. It's a great show with great actors and will make you think about how (un)prepared you are for an emergency event. It was also very good at illustrating how people can revert to base instincts and rash actions under emotional crisis.
What I'm saying is that if you view these "Fat Bubbas" as a problem, what are/have you done to ensure your protection from them during an emergency. I think it safe to say there is a similar group in every community in the country.
Doyle Dempsey, chief deputy for support services, says in the training video that if the project is successful "we will be ahead of the curve when it comes to fighting Islamic extremists."
Lots of Islamic extremists in northern Lousiana. Hundreds of mosques. Lots of Islamic book stores selling Korans. You can never be too safe you know.
This looks just like where I live in southern Md,
forty miles from DC.The Walmarts have asked you not to buy too many pistol rounds at a time (a little sign on the cabinet.)Don't think this isn't everywhere in the USA. The Islamic stuff is a smoke screen, this is really about a fear of Washington (government) and the UN. These boys are serious and they got plenty of Iraq vets helping them to lock and load.
"""Doyle Dempsey, chief deputy for support services, says in the training video that if the project is successful "we will be ahead of the curve when it comes to fighting Islamic extremists."""
Oh, I see, this means these guys are essentially doing some basic training then they will ship on over to afghanistan and pakistan to fight those Islamic extremists and ol leddy nugent looks like he can really open a can of whoop ass, uh, whoop ass beer that is.
Did not know that Bossier is all but inside of Shreveport.
Operation esadus, is that a extremist name of their religion?
