Arctic Permafrost Leaking Methane at Record Levels, Figures Show
Experts say methane emissions from the Arctic have risen by almost one-third in just five years, and that sharply rising temperatures are to blame
Experts say methane emissions from the Arctic have risen by almost one-third in just five years, and that sharply rising temperatures are to blame.
Permafrost in Siberia. Methane emissions from the Arctic permafrost increased by 31% from 2003-07, figures show. (Photograph: Francis Latreille/Corbis) The discovery follows a string of reports from the region in recent years that previously frozen boggy soils are melting and releasing methane in greater quantities. Such Arctic soils currently lock away billions of tonnes of methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, leading some scientists to describe melting permafrost as a ticking time bomb that could overwhelm efforts to tackle climate change.
They fear the warming caused by increased methane emissions will itself release yet more methane and lock the region into a destructive cycle that forces temperatures to rise faster than predicted.
Paul Palmer, a scientist at Edinburgh University who worked on the new study, said: "High latitude wetlands are currently only a small source of methane but for these emissions to increase by a third in just five years is very significant. It shows that even a relatively small amount of warming can cause a large increase in the amount of methane emissions."
Global warming is occuring twice as fast in the Arctic than anywhere else on Earth. Some regions have already warmed by 2.5C, and temperatures there are projected to increase by more than 10C by 2100 if carbon emissions continue to rise at current rates.
Palmer said: "This study does not show the Arctic has passed a tipping point, but it should open people's eyes. It shows there is a positive feedback and that higher temperatures bring higher emissions and faster warming."
The change in the Arctic is enough to explain a recent increase in global methane levels in the atmosphere, he said. Global levels have risen steadily since 2007, after a decade or so holding steady.
The new study, published in the journal Science, shows that methane emissions from the Arctic increased by 31% from 2003-07. The increase represents about 1m extra tonnes of methane each year. Palmer cautioned that the five-year increase was too short to call a definitive trend.
The findings are part of a wider study of methane emissions from global wetlands, such as paddy fields, marshes and bogs. To identify where methane was released, the researchers combined methane levels in the atmosphere with surface temperature changes. They did not measure methane emissions directly, but used satellite measurements of variations in groundwater depth, which alter the way bacteria break down organic matter to release or consume methane.
They found that just over half of all methane emissions came from the tropics, with some 20m tonnes released from the Amazon river basin each year, and 26m tonnes from the Congo basin. Rice paddy fields across China and south and south-east Asia produced just under one-third of global methane, some 33m tonnes. Just 2% of global methane comes from Arctic latitudes, the study found, though the region showed the largest increases. The 31% rise in methane emissions there from 2003-07 was enough to help lift the global average increase to 7%.
Palmer said: "Our study reinforces the idea that satellites can pinpoint changes in the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from a particular place on earth. This opens the door to quantifying greenhouse gas emissions made from a variety of natural and man-made sources."
Palmer said it was a "disgrace" that so few satellites were launched to monitor levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. He said it was unclear whether the team would be able to continue the methane monitoring in future. The pair of satellites used to analyse water, known as Grace, are already over their expected mission life time, while a European version launched last year, called Goce, is scheduled to fly for less than two years.
The new study follows repeated warnings that even modest levels of global warming could trigger huge increases in methane release from permafrost. Phillipe Ciais, a researcher with the Laboratory for Climate Sciences and the Environment in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, told a scientific meeting in Copenhagen last March that billions of tonnes could be released by just a 2C average global rise.
More on methane
While carbon dioxide gets most of the attention in the global warming debate, methane is pound-for-pound a more potent greenhouse gas, capable of trapping some 20 times more heat than CO2. Although methane is present in much lower quantities in the atmosphere, its potency makes it responsible for about one-fifth of man-made warming.
The gas is found in natural gas deposits and is generated naturally by bacteria that break down organic matter, such as in the guts of farm animal. About two-thirds of global methane comes from man-made sources, and levels have more than doubled since the industrial revolution.
Unlike carbon dioxide, methane lasts only a decade or so in the atmosphere, which has led some experts to call for greater attention to curbs on its production. Reductions in methane emissions could bring faster results in the fight against climate change, they say.

I still have this website on my favorites list that was posted on CD soooo many times several years ago. I'd sent it to everyone I knew, and still send it to anyone new that I meet. But no one seems to care. Guess everyone will care, when it's too late to do anything but moan and grown about what someone else did to us.
The website is www.energybulletin.net/2647.html
Page not found
The 'website' is www.energybulletin.net
Did you type the 'page' wrong ?
Maybe you meant this:
Methane Burps: Ticking Time Bomb
http://www.energybulletin.net/node/3647
This is one of the 'tipping points' that Dr. James Hansen is worried about, but some people on CD seem to think we have to teach the world "justice" before we worry about climate change.
Time is running out for "justice", and Civilization.
Yes, I care. But most people are not too worried about climate change yet, because they don't understand how quickly it can become a catastrophe ("quickly" meaning 5 to 10 decades...)
Every new study that comes out tells of increased excelleration of the warming problem. New feedback loops are found all the time. The computer models are constantly being updated. We may not have 5-10 decades.
interesting site, thanks shadre
i still have that one too........energybulletin.net/node/3647
kem patrick used to post it whenever he got the chance.......
he's sorely missed by me........................
Yeah, I remember kem patrick and this article from EB - I too have saved it and sent it around over the past few years.
KEM PATRICK was a great guy. I miss him. He got banned for being passionate on DU and Methane if I understood what happened, so he took it personally. So did Ben Franklin and pacplyer (my ancestors!)
I enjoyed mostly arguing with him against Billy4 on the nuke power threads. Good times.
Sadly, it looks like sites like CD are going to be slowed to a crawl and just quit working. The telecoms are forcing "pay for speed" so our days maybe are numbered.
I was surprised free speech lasted this long. The Bush Dark Ages are just beginning.
Good Luck everyone.

Greetings all. Its been awhile. Sorry to hear about Kem. We butted heads quite a bit, but banning sucks. Can I say that?
So, how much time do we have?
'can i say that?'..........you just did!!!
Bloody hell. I wonder whether we non-crazy people of the world will finally get fed up enough with the psychopaths in charge to implement regime changes ourselves, or will we just sit around wringing our hands till deoxygenation kills everyone everywhere.
Who are the "non-crazy poeple of the world" and who are the "psychopaths in charge"?
If you need to ask, you're in trouble.
So help me out I need to know who is killing us all so we can arm up against them and take back our world!!! So how do we do that?
I'm sure that if you were really interested, you'd already have worked it out for yourself.
I am interested that's why I'm on this site to expand my knowledge. So how do I go about that?
The list is lenghty but involves protection of the status quo of wealth and power.
Corporations are amoral and have no motive other than to max profits and influence.
In our currently corupt political and media environment the corporations now rule us. The following interests, by funding corupt politicians, ideological think tanks, ideological educational influence and misinformation media campaigns will max their profit and influence till we take back our country or till we are extinct.
Oil, Gas, Coal industries for obvious reasons.
Internal combustion machine manufacturers.
Traditional electric utilities.
Mining industry
Banking & Wall St. which demands increasing returns fron these industies.
Big Agriculture: To maintain our current 6.8 billion people we keep 20 billion livestock and 20 billion food birds.
The US Chamber of Commerce for their shameless manipulations of information, elections, and political graft.
The church: with almost 7 billion people on earth, forbiding birth control is criminal.
DLC (pro corporate) Democrats and all republicans who ignore, deny or pander to the issues while towing a strictly corporate policy stance.
Thank you for your awakening interest and responsibility.
you forgot 'big pharma' on that list...............
who, btw, apparently cashed in on the sales of their vaccines and medication in the hyped-up scare of swine flu................
i just read that recently on the internet.............
The question was about climate change criminals.
Undoutably Big Pharma is the biggest monster under other rocks.
Note: good article on the villans of Climate Change in the current Rolling Stone Magazine.
Don't forget the Pentagon, the biggest single burner of fossil fuels. Warfare contributes directly to climate change in many ways.
well said ed.................
Sometimes the line of demarcation is not always so clear--today's savior, tomorrow's tyrant.

there was an old scary movie where the lead character man finally rips his own eyes right out of his head to avoid seeing the horrors of life...this reminds me of that...
The reason why there are fewer remote-sensing satellites than desired is because Bush the Idiot altered NASA's mission from one of Earth observing to one of space conquest with the emphasis on manned landings on the Moon and Mars. Many, many Earth observing platforms were canceled (e.g. EOS and InSAR), even mid-program, wasting billions of dollars, and another couple of billion as NASA hurriedly altered their mission.
I'm still waiting for Obomber to breath new life into NASA and re-identify it's primary mission as Earth observing. I'm not holding my breath, however.
Under Obomber, you can only expect the "Earth-observing" missions to turn into "Earth-bombing" missions. They'll put more satellites, oh, sure, just saw they can see what the best and more effectives spots to drop bombs or send the drones are.
The thieving bankers were so hot to own the whole world that, along with corporations, they are rendering it uninhabitable.
Let them have the wasteland they have created, and welcome. As for the rest of us, we were going to die anyway.
The next mass extinction is already well under way. Old as I am I expect to see some of its more dramatic effects before I go.
Isn't it a shocker? The whole world is really a Hati waiting to happen.
And the other horrible side of the coin is that many of the elite like Bill Gates know what's coming, so they are building "Seed Vaults" and guys like David Rockefeller are involved in covert populations control through GMO foods: Not that it has ever worked beyond rising the cancer rate and becoming a huge boon to Big Pharma.
I'm so old, I only think in Fahrenheit but a ten celsius rise is 108 Fahrenheit (90F plus 18F) where 90 percent of the species live; which is un-survivable long-term for Homo Sapiens without air-conditioning in many places on this planet. The elite will scramble for High Altitude retreats while the peasants cook and starve and drown.
My best guess is that 2020 is going to be bad, 2050 the Greenland Ice cap will break apart, and in 2100 the roaches and geckos will inherit the earth with most humans dead.
Or, looking at this congress, it's possible it already happened... ;-)

"Unlike carbon dioxide, methane lasts only a decade or so in the atmosphere"
this is a bit of a misleading statement. the methane does not disappear in a decade, it oxidizes into carbon dioxide and water, both of which are GHG's.
"carbon dioxide and water, both of which are GHG's." Will draining the ocean help w/Man Made Global Warming?
Sure, but then we'd all have to drink whisky.
Everything is fine.

And? Lived like the Tribes used to live & we wouldn't even be having this conversation.
But there was a change in ownership in this land & this land is under New & Improved Management so what can I say?
My anti-Woody Guthrie song, this land is your land, this land is not my land, this land is your land, because it was swiped from me & mine. Cha cha cha.
Funny stuff, huh!
I have to much fun on this planet. I have way to much fun.
Yeah, I wonder if when Jesus said, render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, if he knew that while it may look like Caesar is building some really grand swell world upon the earth that eventually it will turn into Hell on Earth.
Difficult to say what Jesus knew some 2000 years ago.
So the planet orbits. What happens happens. In the Time Continuum if things are this bad now, then can only predictably get worse. I am poor. If I die today who cares? All that means to me is I don't bills anymore.
No more rendering unto Caesar because doesn't rule the Kingdom of Heaven. Already sounds like Heaven to me.
I lost my shirt at Caesar's and you think it's funny?
ShadowDancer,
The song is kinda' funny. I chuckled. It is instinctive to mask the pain. But, don't feel alone, it's not mine either. I used to feel comfortable anywhere here on Turtle Island. Now, nowhere feels like home and the people are nuts. We are surrounded by insanity. I hope you don't die today because I like reading your posts, but will understand if Nature decides it is time to go.
Peace always

Something about this story smells funny.
Given that global warming is speeding up, that we're approaching the tipping point, not to mention perpetual wars & economic collapse (each of which is a truly momentous occurrence), and that our doing something about said adversities will require profound and unprecedented changes in the way we think, live and interact with one another, why this continued pretense that same old same old business as usual status quo incrementalism has any chance whatsoever of turning things around? But if not incrementalism, what? Our rising up en masse, the only action that has a chance of changing the world within the time restraints that we're facing. And if this analysis is correct, won't our doing anything less amount to nothing more than feel good about oneself exercises in futility? Or not?
But if not incrementalism, what?
Transformation, and it's only you who can fill it the blanks there. We cannot condemn others if we ourselves are unconsciously 'feeding the beast.' As an example, if we have a battle mentality, are we not contributing to war or the promotion thereof in our own way?
Within our frustration it's all to easy to point fingers and blame. However, many of us might behave the same as the fat cats if we were operating in their circle of privalage.
To see this is a good thing because it paves the way for 'authentic' transformation. The temptation is to divide the world into comic book 'good guys' and 'bad guys.' But if the truth be known, many of the so-called good guys are 'bad' as well.
Thus to be truly we must 'see' truly, and this is an exceedingly difficult thing to do. It's much easier to identify with some group or cause, and pick up their banner or label.
In my view being a true 'individualist' means being free to be 'conservative' or 'liberal' when the situation calls for it. This may mean not supporting every cause that wears the progressive label, nor rejecting every cause that wears a 'conservative' one.
Ultimately, when pigeon-holing others labels tend be fables anyway.
There's individual transformation and there's social transformation. Had the African-American community waited for rascists to voluntarily stop oprressing them, instead of taking collective action, they'd still be sitting in the back of the bus.
And that's the long and the short of a key concept, vitally important for us all! Thank you.
True, there can be 'reform,' but if the underlying cause (in this case prejudice) is not addressed, the problem is likely to resurface, perhaps in a more virulent but subtle form. Being true does not require 'waiting,' but 'acting in spite of.' We often refrain from acting due to fear, even though we know we shouldn't. No code of morality can tell us what is right or wrong; in fact, any 'moral code' administered without understanding invariably becomes immoral and/or oppressive. We can see clear evidence of this in organized religion.
I wonder how long it'll be until the atmosphere becomes incapable of supporting life.
Even if worse comes to worse, recovery is apparently possible, even without our involvement.
PETM Recovery
The δ13C record records a duration of around 170,000[11][40] to 120,000[12] years, relatively rapid compared to the residence time of carbon in the modern atmosphere (100-200 thousand years). A satisfactory explanation of this rapid recovery must incorporate a feedback system.[41]
The most likely method of recovery invokes an increase in biological productivity, transporting carbon to the deep ocean. This would be assisted by higher global temperatures and CO2 levels, as well as an increased nutrient supply (which would result from higher continental weathering due to higher temperatures and rainfall; volcanics may have provided further nutrients). Evidence for higher biological productivity comes in the form of biogenic Barium.[41] However, this proxy may instead reflect the addition of Barium dissolved in methane.[42] Diversifications suggest that productivity increased in near-shore environments, which would have been warm and fertilized by run-off - outweighing the reduction in productivity in the deep oceans.[28]

Or is it more complicated?
Just to add a little positive feeling here; I am posting some words sent to me by a friend named Virginia, she is a teacher. The words may be hers or someone elses, I think the words speak to many of us.

This is all surreal, straight out of a Twilight Episode of a science fiction movie. You see the things happenings, you even see them all coming together, you know what's gonna happen at the end, yet, you're completely powerless to do anything except watch it happen. All I can say is that I hope it happens soon. The sooner, the better.
