Netanyahu Shrugs off Worldwide Criticism
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has brushed aside international anger over the expansion of Jewish neighbourhoods in east Jerusalem by defining the new plans as ''standard procedure''.

Tuesday the Jerusalem municipality approved the construction of another
900 housing units in Gilo, which is built on land annexed by Israel
after the 1967 Six-Day War and is regarded as an illegal settlement by
the United Nations.
''There is nothing new in the planning procedures,'' a spokesman for Mr Netanyahu said. ''Gilo is a part of Jerusalem, just like Rehavia, Pisgat Zeev and Ramot Eshkol.''
South of Jerusalem's centre, Gilo is home to 40,000 Jewish residents and completes a ring of Jewish neighbourhoods through east Jerusalem that Palestinians say prevents the eastern side of the city from becoming a future capital of a Palestinian state.
The new construction plans raised the ire of the US, Britain and the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
The State Department spokesman, Ian Kelly, gave voice to US exasperation: ''We find the Jerusalem planning committee decision to move forward the approval process for the expansion of Gilo, in Jerusalem, as dismaying.''
The White House went further and reprimanded Israel on other activities. ''The US also objects to other Israeli practices in Jerusalem related to housing, including the continuing pattern of evictions and demolitions of Palestinian homes. Our position is clear: the status of Jerusalem is a permanent status issue that must be resolved through negotiations between the parties,'' the White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said.
Diplomatic sources said Israeli officials ignored a request on Monday by President Barack Obama's envoy, George Mitchell, to halt the Gilo decision. Mr Ban also issued a tersely worded statement, deploring the Israeli Government's decision on the Gilo settlement.
''The Secretary-General reiterates his position that settlements are illegal, and calls on Israel to respect its commitments under the road map to cease all settlement activity, including natural growth,'' a statement issued by his office said, referring to the peace plan that foresees two states living side by side.
Since he was sworn into office in January, a key plank of Mr Obama's strategy to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians has been to demand that Israel cease all settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
Israel has repeatedly refused to consider a construction freeze of any kind in east Jerusalem, offering instead to impose a construction pause in the West Bank during the resumption of future negotiations with the Palestinians.
Despite its ostensibly tough stance, the Obama Administration has sent mixed signals.
Last month the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, praised Mr Netanyahu's offer as ''unprecedented''. But in the face of a furious response across the Arab world, and the announcement by the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, that he would quit politics, Mr Obama has renewed his insistence that Israel halt all settlement construction.
In Israel's biggest selling newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, yesterday the columnist Shimon Shiffer wrote that the latest statement from the White House indicated that the ''Obama Administration has decided to change the rules of the game and not to behave like other US administrations in the past''.
Mr Mitchell ''has been trying for some time to persuade Israel that it is not enough to declare twice a day its desire to renew negotiations,'' the columnist wrote, adding: ''Israel, say the Americans, has to change its mode of conduct in so far as it pertains to construction in the territories.''

Well, that story has been debunked. It's an urban myth.
Even if it were true, it's still not cannibalism. The crusaders cooked their enemies and ate them, FWIW I think that's just a bit more evil than harvesting organs from the dead (even if the dead aren't willing to have their organs harvested.).
This story has decidedly NOT been debunked, and there is a lot of evidence to corroborate it. Apparently you take naked denial as proof. I suggest you take off your rose-colored glasses when looking at Israel.
I'm not one of those who wears such glasses. Tell me, is there a waiting list for transplant surgery in Israel? If there is then this story has no merit. Funny how if you utter one point that doesn't condemn Israel you're a hasberist, eh? Look up other things I've written about Israel and then try to argue that I'm wearing silly glasses.
Recently, once again feeling exasperation at the crushing density of U.S. support for these acts of aggression by the Israeli government, I looked into the history of the jewish people.
I think I now see where this arrogance and aggression is coming from. Please do not interpret this as being an attempt at justification. It is not.
It seems, that in the multiple milleniums of jewish history, there has been a near constant series of attacks - in a wide range of locations and techniques - against the jews. From the Egyptian Pharoahs to the Romans to the Christians (seemingly within every European Imperialist agenda - the French, Spanish, English, Belgian.......) to the Muslims to the Communists to the Nazis to the present. Most of these attacks involved isolating the jews physically and socially and some were more vicious than others.
The one thing that is consistent in jewish persecution is that all of these empires used FORCE to take property and valuables (often through outright specifically prejudicial laws) from the jewish people.
After thousands and thousands of years of this sort of treatment from almost every place the jews tried to live, it seems the Nazis and the Fascists were the final straw.
In the aftermath of World War II, a movement within the jewish community, which had started unevenly organizing at the end of the 19th Century, had determined that they would go back to where they had begun and they would follow the techniques which had been (and still are being) used by every land grabbing empire they had seen come and go for these thousands of years.
So, here we are, watching one of the newest nations on earth follow through with what all of these arrogant, greedy, oppressive nations have shown them is the way to survive and even grow.
The absolute worst aspect of all of this abusive history is the timing and the way that the United States of America, for its own very devious, imperialistic, calculating, energy greedy purposes, is encouraging this horrible, milleniums old behavior to AGAIN be the favored method of statehood.
The three "great" western religions which claim Jerusalem are equally fraudulent in their claims as long as they allow this separation of people to continue.

You're right clovis, he does look like Mussolini. I'm actually living in Italy now, in Turin, home of aging Partisans, in addition to Fiat. I've read that 20-30% of Italy's Jewish population was exterminated during the war, like you said, during the Nazi occupation. It happens that I live across from the historic synagogue here in Piazzetta Primo Levi; it's guarded 15 hours a day by 2 alpine army guys in a jeep. I didn't realize the extent to which guilt (genuine or feigned, the latter especially by politicians) for the Holocaust still substantially restricts strong publicly voiced criticism of Israel. In Germany there are strict laws against anything which can be deemed anti-Semitic speech. I think it can be said that Italy does not have a tradition of rascism, though like all of Europe, there is now fear and some backlash against the immigration from Eastern Europe since 1989 and from Africa, maybe on the increase especially due to the terrible violence ongoing in the Congo.
The situation's the same in France, where I live. It used to be that discussion of the Israel-Palestine question was much more open here than in the US, but no longer. I'm not sure why this is. Of course there's a strong Jewish lobby here, too, but that doesn't really explain it, since they were there before the recent change of heart. Most alarming is that the general suppression, at least in the French MSM, of what is actually happening in the Holy Land, and the open public embrace of all things Israel, comes at a time when that country's crimes have grown worse and far more frequent.
Wow, that is alarming, and it surprises me. A media backlash against the destruction of property by Arab kids on the periphery? What backroom deals are Sarkozy and Kouchner making? I've been disappointed in the indifference and cowardice of Europe re Palestine. Italian TV news is terrible plus the myth of the liberating, Marshall Plan USA, beacon of democracy, innovation and prosperity is, incredibly, still going strong here. (Time seems to move much slower in Italy than across the pond.) How naive was I. Like many citizens throughout the pathetic western democracies whose politicians and elites have been corrupted into supporting this disgraceful behaviour by this particular State for so very long I am outraged.
We may wonder about the use of just commenting but many have learned a lot from contributions and conscience is disturbed more aware and awake to the grave injustices being perpetrated. But outrage is something that must become directed relentless and uncompromising to save the poor population of Palestine now. It is prompted to reach heights unimaginable when we consider the fawning weakness and unconscionable support elites in the democracies have been giving to the criminal illegal barbarism over so many years. They are the ones who are most responsible and we in turn must somehow put all our efforts into holding them all to account. We must insist on answers to questions as to why this is being done in our names. That is the responsibility of all citizens who are aware of the gravity of these ongoing criminal racist acts.

But the Quartet insists Hamas accept all previous agreements as one condition. This alone is key to understanding what has been going on. Why should or could such a condition be required of Hamas (note)'a terrorist organisation'? When those previous agreements have never been met by Israel only broken as more and more settlements buildings and populations surged forth upon the instigation of those very agreements. Break conditions on any contract and that contract can legitimately be considered broken. Yet this is a condition? Have not the Palestinians every right to use any means to oppose a military State that terrorises their population and occupies their land? If the Chinese army occupied the USA would not US citizens have every right to attack the Chinese State itself? To fire rockets at China from border areas in an effort to force it to get out of American lands? Since when is resistance to a State that occupies others lands terrorism?

The US congress and pentagon should send the 5 billion??, annually it gives to Israel to me. I am a US citizen and know I would put to better use than them. I would spread the wealth around, and US citizens could afford homes, or just give back to the taxpayers. Maybe then Israel would not have the money to continue destruction into Palestinian lands. USAers would be able to own their houses instead of the banks. How is that for arrogance? At the least caterpillars and weapons should be stopped and next year the money. This year I think it has already gone out. Think of the possibilities that 5 billion would pay for. Homeless shelters in every city. Loans to small business, a fund for poor children, community mental health clinics, free clinics, after school programs, funds for arts and music that have been cut in schools. There are all sorts of really neat things we could use that money for. Why do we give it away to this regime? That is an awful lot of money to throw away. We need to use that money here in the USA for constructive purposes. Next year we should just say no, stop the flow, turn it off. I cannot even say Netanyahoo and I don't want to know anything about them. I want the 5 billion to stay here within the USA, where it belongs.

I am considering very seriously withdrawing any donations to a non profit '501' organization that seems to be so biased in one area that seems to be so important to the world; not just the Jews in it.
If I were a Jew I would not be silent about so much criminal activity done in the name of my faith. But then, they would not let me join their 'exclusive club'; I'm Scottish (of Clan Campbell) and the Romans hated us more than they did the Jews; they built a wall (Hadrian's) to keep us on the other side--- so we just 'threw stuff' over it and killed them.

We protest and moan much about ethnic minorities when underrepresented in work places and government positions -and rightly so- as this is clearly a reflection of injustice.

Instead of coming down so hard on Iran, why doesn't the world simply boycott Israel? If that doesn't get their attention maybe cutting off all of their funds from the US might. All you have to do is get their attention. Once that is accomplished you could probably reason with them.
