Karzai Declared Afghan President, Run-Off Scrapped
KABUL - Afghanistan's election commission declared Hamid Karzai elected as president on Monday after it called off a runoff following the withdrawal of his only rival.

(REUTERS/Ahmad Masood) The run-off, called after the first round in August was marred by widespread fraud, was to have been held on November 7.
"The Independent Election Commission declares the esteemed Hamid Karzai as the president ... because he was the winner of the first round and the only candidate in the second round," the commission's chief Azizullah Ludin told a news conference.
Ludin told a packed media conference the decision was made to spare the Afghan people the expense and risk of another election and because a one-candidate race would raise questions about the legitimacy of the presidency.
Former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah withdrew from the race over the weekend, citing doubts about the credibility of the election process.
"Karzai has lost his legitimacy, he is a very weak president and he cannot govern without reaching out to Dr Abdullah," said Kabul-based political analyst Haroun Mir. "So the ball is in Dr Abdullah's court right now."
Karzai's camp on Sunday had ruled out a coalition with Abdullah, but he has been under intense pressure from various quarters to bring Abdullah into the government.
Earlier U.N chief Ban Ki-moon made a visit to Kabul that had not been announced in advance, as diplomatic efforts gathered pace to resolve the prolonged political crisis.
"We continue to stand by the people of Afghanistan in their quest for prosperity and peace," Ban said.
The withdrawal of Abdullah from the run-off had cast doubts over the legitimacy of the next government, already under a cloud following the August 20 election marred by allegations of fraud in favor of Karzai.
A weakened Afghan government under Karzai would be a blow for U.S. President Barack Obama as he considers whether to send up to 40,000 more troops to fight a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan.
A spokesman for Karzai's campaign said the president will issue a statement about the election commission announcement later in the day.
Abdullah had left the door open for future discussions but said no deals had been struck in return for his withdrawal, seen by diplomats as one way to spare the country more uncertainty that discredits the government and can only aid the insurgency.
Ban ki-Moon met both Karzai and Abdullah, officials said.
A U.N. statement said the meetings were "to assure them and the Afghan people of the continuing support of the United Nations doubts over the credibility of his government.
Ban made the visit after five foreign U.N. staff were killed in a suicide attack last week on a Kabul guest-house used by the United Nations.
The attack was claimed by the Taliban, who have vowed to disrupt the run-off and said the guest-house was targeted because of the United Nations' role in helping organize the Afghan election.
The run-off was ordered after a UN-led investigation panel found widespread fraud in favor of Karzai in the August 20 election.

Shades of Bush/Gore 2000. Another rigged 'election', rife with corruption and vote tampering that produced the results beneficial to the Corporations.
Face it people, democracy, for all intents and purposes, is dead.
It has become a hollow shell, a prop used by dictatorial governments that offer the illusion of choice and freedom. Kharzai is a puppet of the oil companies, tied to drug producing warlords.
Just like the Western politicians who placed him in power.
How long before he is declared another Saddam Hussien, and lies are spun that he must be toppled from power to protect 'Democracy (tm)'.
Democracy in action. Lets see, ballot boxes stuffed, wide spread fraud, winner is declared by external agency, they're getting the hang of it!

"The only means of strengthening one's intellect is to make up one's mind about nothing, to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts." - John Keats
actually -- as of now - it is the USA that is the Puppet of Karzai.
what has really happened is:
Karzai recognized for a long time now that the USA was gradually "removing" him from power - to be replaced by Abdullah, who realizes HE is not in position to really challenge Karzai , AFTER KARZAI , to protect HIMSELF from AMERICA's obvious attempt to replace him , made DEALS with his fellow Afghans of DIFFERENT factions: taliban, warlords, tribal chiefs, non-pashtun, pashtun, opium growers, .etc
and actually strengthened himself.
the legitimacy of his government is NOT the point . it is who HOLDS power and HE holds power MORE than ever when the USA still "favored" him - thinking that he would be the USA's PUPPET.
he played the part - but only so long as he could maintain his hold...but the moment the USA became "displeased" with HIM for not following every order of washington - which HE could not do at risk of alienating ALL the afghan factions - who saw him AS a PUPPET of the USA , he made his deals ...regardless of what the USA wanted.
IN FACT _ this - despite the afghans detesting him anyway and their brutal leaders ....gained better respect for him SIMPLY by showing that he is "independent" of the USA by making his deals .
it's the USA that is in a bind.
it has fed him - and expected total obedience. but he wouldn't and couldn't without risking HIMSELF to his afghan people and the USA tried to undermine him - and it failed -
and NOW is stUCK with a "former favorite" that knows the USA HAS BETRAYED HIM - and will try to do so again...
but meanwhile HE holds the cards in the relationship with the USA because it is HE that has gathered the different Afghan factions to give THEM a sense of "independence" from US dictates.
obama demands that Karzai's government must now "fix the corruption".......
karzai must be laughing in his palace.
the USA PUPPET MASTERS are now the PUPPETS of Karzai and his different rivalling factions - or - put it simply:
the USA PUPPET MASTER is now the PUPPET of the AFGHAN Warlords and Leaders and factions and karzai.
whatever THEIR differences and compromises are between THEMSELVES - and from the ordinary afghans who detest their own brual leaders -
ALL OF THE AFGHANIS NOW have joined - despite their differences - IN ONE CAUSE beyond their rivalries:
TO KICK OUT THE AMERICAN and NATO OCCUPIERS.

and not without FIRST BLEEDING the USA of money some MORE!
Remember those much heralded elections in South Vietnam 42 years ago? Remember how a year later, the runner up in that election was sentenced to 5 years in jail for advocating talks with the NLF? Remember how he completed his 5 year sentence and was still kept in jail on no charge whatsoever?
Is this what we have to look forward to? Let's cut our losses and get out.
Why did they bother?
This must be a new record in fake elections.
My thinking is that it was held to influence the citizens of the US, so it doesn't really matter how it took place or what really happened as long as what passes for US media reports that an election took place and democracy was established.
I wonder, in what world our leaders are living?
Termite queens, to accomplish all their egg laying, become much larger than worker termites, and in addition the queen is encased in a large chamber that functions much as a cell or jail. This might be the image that we need to carry forward as the nation stumbles forward to it's ultimate fate.
