Lieberman: Sure, I'd Filibuster A Health Care Reform Bill
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) told reporters today that he would in fact filibuster any health care bill he doesn't agree with--and right now, he doesn't agree with the proposal making its way through the Senate.
"I told Senator Reid that I'm strongly inclined--i haven't totally
decided, but I'm strongly inclined--to vote to proceed to the health
care debate, even though I don't support the bill that he's bringing
together because it's important that we start the debate on health care
reform because I want to vote for health care reform this year. But I
also told him that if the bill remains what it is now, I will not be
able to support a cloture motion before final passage. Therefore I will
try to stop the passage of the bill."
There are two procedural issues at play here. Most people think of a filibuster as a minority blocking passage of a bill that's already been debated ad nauseum on the Senate floor. That's the most standard filibuster. But on major legislation, it's become more common for the minority--in this case the Republicans--to object to the majority getting a chance to debate legislation in the first place. If any one of them objects to the so-called motion to proceed, it will take 60 votes just to start the amendment and debate process. That's a less-discussed filibuster, but it's quite plausible that this health care bill will have to contend with it.
Lieberman is saying that he's pretty much OK with letting senators offer amendments--try to change the legislation, move it in any direction they deem necessary. But when that process is all over, and Harry Reid wants to hold an up or down vote on the final product, Lieberman's saying he'll join that filibuster, if he's not happy with the finished product. Point blank.

Show Allif the Ba.. filibuster, take his chairmanship from him, if he want to vote with republication fine, but he will not be able to milk his donor as ex chairman.
Idiots like him & his ilk should be strung up by their thumbs, figuratively speaking, of course.
In reality, they should be fired, voted out.
Period.
Him & his ilk are in it for nothing at all but themselves.
From Massachusetts: Not far from Hartford where the slimy insurance biz corps have their headquarters. I can't believe what this Joe guy is doing. He ought to be stripped of all his rankings in the senate. So let him join his neocon buddies there, at least it's out on the table for everyone to see.
This man is no democrat the way he is beholden to corporate amerika. Has he forgotten that that's how fascism starts?
George C. Brown - Dear Senator Lieberman, We know that your are beholden to the insurance industry for nearly one-half million dollars ($46_,_ _ _ . _ _). However, those were NOT the folks who elected you to serve in the U.S. Senate. We, the people, are well aware that a senator does not make that much from the government (read the U.S. taxpayers, including us that are not from Conecticut). Do what is the right thing for the people of the U.S., and not the greed-heads that are driving this country into the ground!
My wife calls him "Dead Mouth."
Karma is really a bitch
Joe
Just remember I told you
So
Anything to keep all those Christians and Muslims suffering in poverty, eh Joe?
His wife, "HADASAH" Is tied in with the drug industry.
We need full disclosure of all income for Hadasah and Joey.
If Obama promised Joey that he would bomb Iran, Joey would sanction anything for Obama. How many people know that Joey
wrote anasskissing book about former Democratic Chairman
John Bailey in Ct???
According to open secrets,Joe Lieberman received $424,624.00 from insurance industry sources in 2006.Enough said! peace
Here's another preview message.
If the two house of congress pass slightly different versions of same legislation, then the reconciliation procedure can bypass a filibuster, and this jack ass could suck air as long as the leadership of the Democrats in congress would simply do this. That's all it takes. The GOP has done this with legislation when they saw fit to. What the hell is the problem? How about if some of the Democratic congressional "leadership" shows some guts.
AD
Leave It To Lieberman. Reminds me of "Wimpy". Total sellout to the insurance companies, he should be removed from his chairmanships and booted out of office in the next election.
"he" doesn't like??? "he"...
who the f*** is "he"...
"he's" never struggled on a wage earner salary...
"he's" never seen his deductibles... copays... prescriptions... cause his family to make tough choices...
when he left the democratic party... it was all about "him"... (and they re-elected "him")
"he" didn't say this health care bill fails on it's merits... there are problems here... or problems there... just "he" may not like it...
it's semantics... but everytime i hear this guy... "he" comes across as a sanctimonious self-ingratiated pomp-ass... the george will type... you know... the pole up the rectum straight through to the brain... i swear if he laughed his face would crack...
Joe Lie-ber-man is a nothing. He sit in Bushes lap for eight years without any pants on. He vote for turncoat McCain. So why does this nothing have any say so in the Democratic aganda.?
Obama gave it to him. Remember way back when Obama supported Lieberman when Lieberman threatened that if he lost his chairmanship he would caucus with the Repubs? Obama made him a deal he couldn't refuse -- power.
According to the video posted here, http://www.dailykos.com/tv/w/002298/ Lieberman used healthcare reform as an issue in his 2006 re-election campaign and favored a universal government run program!
Along with being demented, it seems he has dementia.
Lieberman stating that he'd filibuster a health care bill is hardly news to anyone. He'd filibuster his own mother...if he had one!
Obama Welcomed Joe Lieberman back into the fold in Nov-2008!
President Obama welcomed Joe Lieberman back into the Democratic Party fold after the election in November of 2008.
Obama has NO SPINE FOLKS.
Remember these words from Joe Liberman at the 2008 RNC for John McCain and Sarah Palin. He bashes Obama and heaps great praise upon Palin and McCain and the Republican Party. I hope that you are not surprised that Lieberman acts this way today or any other day. His words here:
"Senator Barack Obama is a gifted and eloquent young man who I think can do great things for our country in the years ahead...But my friends, eloquence is no substitute for a record, not in these tough times for America. In the -- in the Senate, during the three-and-a-half years that Senator Obama's been a member, he has not reached across party lines to accomplish anything significant, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party to get something done. And I just ask you to contrast that with John McCain's record of independence and bipartisanship....Governor Palin, like John McCain, is a reformer. She's taken on the special interests and the political power brokers in Alaska, and reached across party lines to get things done. The truth is, she is a leader we can count on to help John shake up Washington....That's why -- that's why I sincerely believe that the real ticket for change this year is the McCain-Palin ticket....Let me tell you, friends, that the Washington bureaucrats and the power brokers are not going to be able to build a pen that will hold in these two mavericks. It's just not possible...."
As a result of Obama's allowing Lieberman to return, I saw Obama as a spineless wonder. That is when I left the Democratic Party and joined the Green Party knowing full well that the Dems are a corporate backed one. The Dems love corporate Joe and all his big money connections.
"...President-elect Barack Obama has informed party officials that he wants Joe Lieberman to continue caucusing with the Democrats in the 111th Congress, Senate aides tell the Huffington Post....Obama's decision could tie the hands of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been negotiating to remove Lieberman as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform committee while keeping him within the caucus. Lieberman has insisted that he will split from the Democrats if his homeland security position is stripped....If Lieberman were to continue caucusing with the Democrats without being punished for his campaign conduct -- Democrats say he broke a promise not to campaign negatively against Obama -- the progressive community will undoubtedly be up in arms. For Obama, however, the move may be a shrewd gesture towards reconciliation, in the process taking a potentially taxing political fight off the table....Fellow Connecticut Senate Chris Dodd, who has spoken out in favor of Lieberman remaining in the party...."
"...It was something of a surprise, then, when a newly configured Democratic Senate caucus — no longer clinging to a one-vote majority — decided Tuesday, by a vote of 42-13, to keep Lieberman as one of their own. He will even retain his chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which is responsible for oversight of the executive branch. The vote appears to be less about Lieberman and more about Democrats and President-elect Barack Obama building a consensus. While highly critical of Lieberman’s straying allegiance, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was careful never to cut him loose. And Obama signaled that that he wanted Lieberman to remain in the caucus.“The Democrats wanted to string up Lieberman by his toes and hit him with a broom,” said Kenneth Dautrich, a public policy professor at the University of Connecticut. “But by extending this olive branch, they’ve learned to overcome their emotional response and not be vindictive.”...“The result of the vote is not because the Democrats want to forgive him,” said Dautrich. “It’s because he’ll be an important vote.”"
WAY TO GO DEMOCRATS!!!!! LEARN-YOU NEVER WILL!!!!!!
Joe Lieberman will always be a TRAITOR!!!!!
You folks are being too hard on him. He's only doing what his funders, the insurance industry, are asking. He is bought and paid for, and like him or not, once he's bought he stays bought.
Al Gore's worst decision was selecting this zionist traitor as his running mate in 2000.
don't forget context...
8 years of bashing by republicans... gore was widely thought to have to distance himself from clinton to have a chance...
and wasn't it joe who gave the seminal speech in the senate...
republicans may be a lot of things... but they stay on message...
joe had his "15 minutes of fame" and has been milking it ever since... without the speech on clinton... he'd be a senior senator... period...
which goes to how the electorate thinks... shock value... howard stern to sarah palin...
Obama has called this man his "Mentor." What does that tell you....
I'm sure the rich jewish doctors in Connecticut want nothing less. But after all, Lieberman really is the representative of the Israeli government isn't he?
Maybe he's trading in second-hand [Palestinian] body parts with the ring of rabis in NJ too...
Who cares? Its a horrible bill anyway.
All I can say is the people who elected him are a pretty lousy bunch of folks.
Sen. Lieberman, Israelis have single payer that benefits ALL citizens (Jews and Muslims) of Israel. Shouldn't Americans have single payer to? Senator, vote FOR the American people.
Yes, and the best part is that the Israeli single-payer healthcare system is paid for by US tax payers. How's that for a slap on the face?
--"Senator, vote FOR the American people."
Thats not possible. He represents Israelis not Americans. He should just move to Jerusalem and spoon with his Zionist buddies.
Absolutely. He is the Zionist's man in Washington.
mt don that,s 2012 when if finally the good people of
connecticut get a brain they will vote this maggot out.
do not forget who came out to help poor old joe after
he lost the democratic primary in 06. the clintons
some young senator from ill. named obama helped him and all the democratic boiler plate crew as well. if america watching
this they would have seen who their friends and enemies
are. any friend of joe,s is a enemy of america. when we
think that this piece of shit came this close to being
the vp of the us if not for little georgie and dick
stealing the election through computer fraud its truly
frightening as to who and what can be elected to high
office in this country. he would have been just as scary
as them. why not make them pay a portion of their health
care just like everyone else maybe it would give them
pause if effected them personally.if your thinking
about punching joe do not articulate it they are
watching. think it all you want just do not say it here.
If i could pop this fu&*er in the head i would. Unsurprisingly the Dems still stroke this dickheads ego. Why ? He has never sided with the Dems on anything that matters. Of course that's not to say the Dems have sided with anything that matters !! ... but that's a whole 'nother story.
Joe Lieberman has been a consistent legislative douche bag even before he was Al Gore's running mate in 2000. A prime example was his "crusade" against violent video games in 1998. This merely confirms it. If Harry Reid has an gram of cahones, he should immediately strip Lieberman of all positions it is within his parvenu to grant. Let's see how effective Lieberman would be then at delivering government $$ to his constituents in CT.
Your comment raises an interesting point. Given what we now know about Lieberman's politics that remained hidden in 2000, what does that say about the depravity of the DLC, DNC, and Al Gore? Would Lieberman as Veep behave any differently from Cheney? Lieberman favored BushCo's tax cuts for the rich; he favored the whole Reaganomics ponzi scheme; he favors war over peace; he's anti-democratic and favors a more draconian "Patriot Act"; he favors the ongoing domestic and international Class War; and thus he clearly favors profit over people, which renders him a Barbarian neoliberalcon, not much different from the Clintons, Bushs, Cheneys, et al.
Knowing what Lieberman is today, how many who voted for Gore/Liberman would still vote for that same ticket?
His constituents in CT, like him, are Zionists for the most part and basically exist to serve Israel. Masquerading as an American is convenient. Besides, the matzo balls in CT are quite unlike any other.
Health insurance is a scam in its purest form, but for the insurance industry to take the enormous profits it makes from denying claims to bribe congress so that we get some of the lousiest health care in the world and the corporate-congressional complex can continue getting rich----
Calling this a government of, by, and for the people is a cruel joke.
Health insurance is pooled risk, a socialist mechanism that US elites embrace if allowed to profitize it.
Health insurance is only a scam when it's abused as US elites abuse it. The only pooling of risk that makes sense is to include all citizens in the pool. This would be a natural monopoly but US elites have been busting up the natural monopolies for decades, in favor of the much higher cost and lower efficiency of "market competition", which churns more bucks to build the GDP and the Pentagon into bigger sledgehammers to wield against global rivals.
Health insurance elites began segregating out the poor/sick so that now 1/3rd of the population lacks full coverage. The public option does nothing to fix the segregation because the sick/poor will be dumped in that program. The public option also fails to streamline admin and develop negotiating power against providers.
Single payer includes all citizens, making the risk pool functional, streamlines admin and provides negotiating power, to cut healthcare costs in half, in line with the cost in other countries. US elites are resisting descent into such mediocrity in which USans would achieve BEST VALUE in the market. Best value for the people snuffs out US elites' class war fire.
I seem to remember that Senator Reid allowed Lieberman to keep his positions on various committees in exchange for him promising to vote with the Dems. So, if he turns out to be the vote that allows a filibuster, Harry Reid should immediately strip him of any and all of his privileged committee positions. Leave him out there with no say in any bills being written, then let us see how much campaign money he gets when he can't bring home any bacon.
Say it ain't so Joe. We here in Ct are going to send you packing, that is without the slightest doubt. I look forward to seeing your sorry face on election day. I'll be walking door to door for six months prior, me and my son.
keep us posted... where to send anti-joe campaign contribs... etc... here in florida... last cycles... i sent donations to sherod brown... dennis kucinch & al franken... they all won...
let's stick together folks... put your nickels and dimes away for "dump-joe"...
a great intro for your son too... we'll be "walking" with you...
I would suggest an impeachment campaign, as soon as possible. I know this bufoon doesn't represent the good people of Connecticut.
Don't waste the time. Give him a C.I.A. impeachment.
Fenner
Don't be so sure. I can't stand the man but unfortunately I have zero faith in the voters of CT not to re-elect this creep again.
But he's THEIR creep. Reason returns AFTER the petro runs out. Not a minute before.
I wasted a good bit of my life on Chris Murphy, going door to door with my son who was seven at the time. Believe I fetched him around 1k votes in the end. Also attended fundraisers with him and James Carvell and a few others. Then what does this sucker do? Backs Obama and then gets down on his knees and votes yay on the supplemental. And there I was describing him to all those folks for weeks who opened the door for us as a man of peace, gonna end the Bush massacres. And people really listened. I had to restrain myself from spilling my drink down his shirt last time I saw the pathetic sycophant. Pathetic. In four years, I'm going door to door to get rid of Joe.
If one only 'tries to imagine'----Joe Lieberman after he looses his Senatorial Seat----
He can always dress up in a "Lone Ranger Costume" and have the same response from those 'who are on the market for a 'kimosabe'.
For us when we were kids we thought that that 'White Guy' riding around with 'Tonto' was a 'sissy'.
Then we had an 'inter tribal translator' tell us the 'meaning of 'kimosabe', since we did not 'speak Tonto's language'.
It means 'spreads his cheeks for money'-----which would fit very well for Joe Lieberman, US Senator from Connecticut, but only after he is no longer in office. For now US Senator will do just as well.
By the way, Tonto in Spanish means 'fool'.
lieberman's for big business and business as usual..end of story....well heck so are most of the democrats - Lieberman, and Obama for that matter, are telling us basically to our faces "screw you!"
and if that's their attitude towards WE THE PEOPLE then maybe we should take the same attitude with them.
Lieberman just won re-election so he doesn't have to face the polls until 2016....same as baucus in montana.....pressure at the ballot box won't work for these guys......picketing, protesting AND going at the guys who ARE up for re-election - like reid - is the way to go.
Besides that NEVER send the democrats another dollar. That WILL get their attention.
Vote Green Party.
I think that in order to keep everyone honest, Congresspeople should be required to only have whatever type of health care they approve for everyone else. Get rid of their gold plated plan, and let them share the suffering of the masses they proport to represent.
As for LIEberman...maybe if he is allowed murder a few more Arab children in exchange, maybe drop a bomb or two on Iran...he will agree to support the bill.
"The only means of strengthening one's intellect is to make up one's mind about nothing, to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts." - John Keats
How well I agree with that. These fat cats are sucking up every perk they can get..lavish dinners, special parking places, tons of special interest money, the best health care system imaginable for their family members and themselves...and all they care about is pandering to lobbyists....I really beleive this country needs to vote out every last Democrat and Republic...vote for any alternative...socialist, Green, anyone...get rid of these self interest men and women who care less about the general public of America. Liberman himself is a total disgrace...what a looser...but he too is right in the self serving group who pander to money.
Screw him push the strongest bill for real health care reform and make every one in that cesspool put up or shut up and if it is not good for the people may it die a quick death.Tony
Who is paying for this parasite's healthcare? That would be a good policy to cancel.
There is something about that disapproving face that is just asking for a set of brass knuckles. Sorry-- there is something about Joe Lieberman that brings out an aggressive streak in me.
It's because you are anti-Semitic! ;}
Antisemitic? Don't think so.My wife, who's Jewish, when she wants to say something nice about Lieberman, compares him to Meyer Lansky. Not as off the wall as it might sound, if you know something about New Haven politics.
Sarcasm doesn't work well here...
Maybe, like me, he is a true American and Lieberman is not!
Brass knuckles? Very appropriate. This guy was an opportunist asshole in college. He's very consistent.Sad thing is, he's got a constituency, but Lowell Weicker, he is not.
It's quite appropriate to desire the elimination of someone so soaked in blood, as most senators are.
wow, you really mean that? you are nuttier than the tea baggers
"Elimination" can mean many things. Your mind jumped to death, didn't it? And I'm nutty?
