Believers Invest in the Gospel of Getting Rich
FORT WORTH — Onstage before thousands of believers weighed down by debt and economic insecurity, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland and their all-star lineup of “prosperity gospel” preachers delighted the crowd with anecdotes about the luxurious lives they had attained by following the Word of God.
Donors streamed forward at the Southwest Believers’ Convention this month in Fort Worth. (Michael Stravato for The New York Times) Private airplanes and boats. A motorcycle sent by an anonymous
supporter. Vacations in Hawaii and cruises in Alaska. Designer
handbags. A ring of emeralds and diamonds.
“God knows where the money is, and he knows how to get the money to you,” preached Mrs. Copeland, dressed in a crisp pants ensemble like those worn by C.E.O.’s.
Even in an economic downturn, preachers in the “prosperity gospel” movement are drawing sizable, adoring audiences. Their message — that if you have sufficient faith in God and the Bible and donate generously, God will multiply your offerings a hundredfold — is reassuring to many in hard times.
The preachers barely acknowledged the recession, though they did say it was no excuse to curtail giving. “Fear will make you stingy,” Mr. Copeland said.
But the offering buckets came up emptier than in some previous years, said those who have attended before.
Many in this flock do not trust banks, the news media or Washington, where the Senate Finance Committee is investigating whether the Copelands and other prosperity evangelists used donations to enrich themselves and abused their tax-exempt status. But they trust the Copelands, the movement’s current patriarch and matriarch, who seem to embody prosperity with their robust health and abundance of children and grandchildren who have followed them into the ministry.
“If God did it for them, he will do it for us,” said Edwige Ndoudi, who traveled with her husband and three children from Canada for the Southwest Believers’ Convention this month, where the Copelands and three of their friends took turns preaching for five days, 10 hours a day at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The crowd of more than 9,000 was multiracial, from 48 states and 27 countries. There was no fee to attend. There were bikers in leather vests, pastors, blue-collar workers, professionals and plenty of families with children.
A large contingent came in wheelchairs, hoping for miraculous healings. The audience sat with Bibles open, flipping to passages cited by the preachers, taking notes on pads and laptop computers.
“The folks who are coming aren’t poor,” said Jonathan L. Walton, a professor of religion at the University of California, Riverside, who has written about the movement and was there doing research. “They reside in that nebulous category between the working and the middle class.”
Sitting in Section 316, eight rows up, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on a Bible at lunch time, was a family who could explain the enduring loyalty the prosperity preachers inspire.
Stephen Biellier, a long-distance trucker from Mount Vernon, Mo., said he and his wife, Millie, came to the convention praying that this would be “the overcoming year.” They are $102,000 in debt, and the bank has cut off their credit line, Mrs. Biellier said.
They say the Copelands rescued them from financial failure 23 years ago, when they bought their first truck at 22 percent interest and had to rebuild the engine twice in a year.
Around that time, Mrs. Biellier first saw Mr. Copeland on television and began sending him 50 cents a week.
Others who bought trucks from the same dealer in Joplin that year went under, the Bielliers said, but they did not.
“We would have failed if Copeland hadn’t been praying for us every day,” Mrs. Biellier said.
The Bielliers are now among 386,000 people worldwide whom the Copelands call their “partners,” most of whom send regular contributions and merit special prayers from the Copelands.
A call center at the ministry’s 481-employee headquarters in Newark, Tex., takes in 60,000 prayer requests a month, a publicist said.
The Copelands’ broadcast reaches 134 countries, and the ministry’s income is about $100 million annually.
The Bielliers were at the convention a few years ago when a supporter made a pitch for people to join an “Elite CX Team” to raise money to buy the ministry a Citation X airplane. (Mr. Copeland is an airplane aficionado who got his start in ministry as a pilot for Oral Roberts.) At that moment, Mrs. Biellier said she heard the voice of the Holy Spirit telling her, “You were born to support this man.”
She gave $2,000 for the plane, and recently sent $1,800 for the team’s latest project: buying high-definition television equipment to upgrade the ministry’s international broadcasts.
Mrs. Biellier said some friends and relatives would say the preacher just wanted their money. She explained that the Copelands did not need the money for themselves; it is for their ministry. And besides, even “trashy people like Hugh Hefner” have private airplanes.
“I remember Copeland had to once fly halfway around the world to talk to one person,” she said. “Because we’re partners with Kenneth Copeland, for every soul that gets saved, we get credit for that in heaven.”
But while a band primed the crowd, Professor Walton called the prosperity preachers “spiritual pickpockets.”
“To dismiss and ignore the harsh realities of this economic crisis,” he said. “is beyond irresponsible, to the point of reprehensible.”
The Copelands refused an interview request, but one of their daughters, Kellie Copeland Swisher, and her husband, Steve Swisher, who both work in the ministry, spoke for them.
Mrs. Swisher said the ministry gave away “a minimum of 10 percent of what comes in” to other charities. Her father’s current favorite, she said, is a Roman Catholic orphanage in Mexico.
The ministry has resisted providing the Senate investigation with all the documents requested, she said, because the Copelands did not want to publicly reveal the names of the “partners.” The investigation, which could result in new laws, is continuing, a committee spokeswoman said. Among those being investigated is Creflo Dollar, one of the ministers at the Copelands’ convention.
Mr. Swisher said that even in the economic downturn, the ministry’s income going into the convention was up 3 percent over last year. Asked if they had adjusted the message for the economy, Mrs. Swisher patted the worn Bible in her lap and said: “The message they preach is the Word of God. The Word doesn’t change.”
At the convention, the preachers — who also included Jesse Duplantis and Jerry Savelle — sprinkled their sermons with put-downs of the government, an overhaul of health care, public schools, the news media and other churches, many of which condemn prosperity preaching.
But mostly the preachers were working mightily to remind the crowd that they are God’s elect. “While everybody else is having a famine,” said Mr. Savelle, a Texas televangelist, “his covenant people will be having the best of times.”
“Any time a worried thought about money pops up in your mind,” Mr. Savelle continued, “the next thing you do is sow”: drop money, like seeds, in “good ground” like the preachers’ ministries. “Stop worrying, start sowing,” he added, his voice rising. “That’s God’s stimulus package for you.”
At that, hundreds streamed down the aisles to the stage, laying envelopes, cash and coins on the carpeted steps.

Show AllCan you all say S-T-U-P-I-D
Even Kurt Vonnegut would have had a hard time making this stuff up!
Man how do you start up a racket like that!?!?!?
practice lying, smiling humble-proudly (proudumbly?) and accepting money at the same time...
kind of like working off-ramps, but inside, and with a larger crowd...and better props, laden with tradition...
Wait, are you talking about becoming a crooked preacher or a crooked politician?
Do you mean how do you get started or How do you live with yourself? Number one is easy. Number two I don't know.
Just cook up some flapjacks and tell em you can see the image of jesus in them. Have one or two people agree with you.
Within a few days a whole LOT of people will be convinced they see Jesus in the flapjacks.
Then sell em at 15 bucks a pop.
...and after they get rich they can join the C-Street Cult (provided they are white and male)
C-Street Family takes this a step further saying that Jesus has made them rich and powerful in order to bring about his kingdom on earth and that pretty much anything they do is OK.
They don't belong to Christian churches because the churches got off course when they started caring about the down and out.
Jesus made the down and out that way because they are unimportant.
That's why C-Streeters have been opposing social programs and unions for 70 years including wanting to repeal Medicare and Social Security.
A sucker's born every minute.
Correction. A sucker is born again every minute. ;-)

A sucker is born again every minute -and for every one born, there are two takers.
Amen
Reminds me of a verse in the Leadbelly song:
Well the preacher preached
and passed his hat around
sayin brothers and sisters don't ya worry bout me
I'm Alabama bound
Lord, please heal these credit cards and smite mine creditors. Save this checking account and Lord, please cast the collection agencies and all their collectors into the screaming hell of eternally ringing telephones.
Amen.
Verily I say unto thee, smite these accursed creditors asunder that disturbeth ctrl-z's "wa" and heap upon them fire, scourge and pestilence. As manna from heaven, bringeth down upon ctrl-z copious and bountiful greenback (largeth denomination only).
And forgeteth not my cut.
"And forgeteth not my cut."
Now I know why they say God is the one who gets politicians their jobs.
Thank ye brother. I am feeling more prosperous already.
"Go now and built a cult for it is he who layeth down the kool-aid and makes men drink that become knowneth in league with antichrists" -from the book of Salesmen 2:21
All of these people are just basic S-T-U-P-I-D. They can not see the truth for all the smoke that is blown up their pants and skirts. These types of people are no better than Bernie Madoff. All of them need to join him in prison. Why do you think they are not willing to hand over documentation about their "rip off church". The first hint of a raid by the Feds and these people will be out of the country. Hence the reason for buying all those expensive planes, THAT ONLY THEY CAN USE NOT THE SO CALLED CONGREGATION! All of you are just the stupid sheep following the wolves. When you go into deeper debt and you can't understand why, this is what you will be told. "You are obviously not "giving" enough and GOD is punishing you. So you will just believe them and give more money to them taking you deeper into the black hole while they get richer and richer. And while they are having dinner together and laughing at all of you while planning their next "rip off" session.
Chase after money and security
And your heart will never unclench.
Care about people's approval
And you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back.
The only path to serenity. - Lao Tzu
I love that book. I have many translations. A new one is out by Thomas H. Miles. This new one one compares to the translation against which all others must be measured by Paul Carus.
I think it's out of print, but Amazon probably has a used copy.
Well put, Humbaba.
All the lessons we will ever need have been lived and written about many centuries ago. The ancient masters, from Lao Tzu to Buddha to Jesus Christ, knew what was in the hearts of people and what to avoid. There are new masters too, but they merely re-package what has already been taught, what we already know. It's all pretty simple.
This reminds me of a story about the Russian novelist, Leo Tolstoy. Apparently, a man arrived at Tolstoy's doorstep and asked him the secret of life (I'm paraphrasing wildly). Aged and tired of explaining himself, Tolstoy bounced up and down crying: "Just live right! Just live right!"
Look long and closely at the above photo. That is GOD as designed by the sick, slick, juvenile American mind. That photo tells you everything you need to know about where the United States is today. It tells you about Republicans and Democrats. It tells you about middle class people voting to destroy their own way of life. It is the quicksand of evil, stupidity, wishful thinking and superficiality that shines like newly polished chrome.
There will always be people who think they can buy their way into heaven. And there will always be people pretending to be the gatekeepers with their hands out to accept the ticket price. I don't think that Jesus had this in mind when he said that it is by giving that you will receive.
If you have never watched Copland and his sidekick, Gloria, you should.
His nose is in the air. The smirk on his face is a caricature you will never forget. His exaggerated gestures and facial expressions are things that not only Vonnegut but Sinclair Lewis would have thought too ridiculous for anybody to believe.
Jim Bakker is back. Bald as an onion but still the same old shit.
Is the senate finance committee wanting to investigate the copelands because of fraud or are they wanting a piece of the action?
At the height of his 'ministry' Jim Bakker used to experience a financial crisis every month just as welfare checks were coming out.
The entire ministry would be in peril, Tammy would cry continuously, Jim would join in now and then. Disaster, distress, doom were immanent. They had to have money immediately. The mail was too slow. Please use your credit card, if you have more than one use them all.
And people did. they still do. I have never seen anybody with less charisma than Richard Roberts, but he rakes in the money.
Let's be kind to those poor fellows. After all, many of us have weaknesses too. Some of us use drugs, some use alcohol, some beat their wives. This is just another social problem we need to deal with using kindness. I would support setting up special institutions for people like this, so they can be cured of their delusions. But before we do that, we should legalize drugs, and set up clinics to clean up drug users.
Endearingpatterns sez:

My question for you is; Why should we legalize something for which we need to set up clinics to "clean up" people who use what we are about to legalize?
Poet
ROFL
Than why are cars legal? They are very unhealthy and take alot of death and wounded people every year and I could go on like this for hours...
Please think before you write nonsense like you just did.
Drug should be legal, I can very well decide for myself what I want to put in my body.
Or do you want to be nazi and control someone else his life?
Excuse me? "Some beat their wives"?
First of all, they're not just "fellows." They're women too. But apparently you don't see us as human beings.
And committing domestic violence against your intimates is NOT a "weakness." It's a character flaw.
Typical male fauxgressive -- completely blind to sexism and misogyny.
The participants are all consenting adults who understood very well that into which they were getting. It is legal and if there is any "crime" being perpetrated that crime is victimless.
How come it's okay for the producers and consumers of pornography and prostitution to conduct themselves in such a manner, but many common dreamers get huffy and indignant when preachers do the same thing?
These guys and gals have discovered the perfect con--think about it. They preach "send your money to us and God will bless you". If the marks send in their money and good things happen the preachers get the credit--if they send in their money and either nothing happens or things get worse, well, that's between you and God--'cause that's what they promise.
Humbaba (with a little help from Lao-Tzu) has identified the central issue involved--people desperately seeking the rewards that a life's work should produce from either excessive wealth accumulation or the fawning approval of others.
With this as a premise (rather than the ethical and moral crookedness of the schemers) a constructive discussion can proceed in all manner of directions.
Who or what has taken away the satisfactions and reward that a life of honest productive work serving others should produce?
What kind of miserable life decisions lead people like the clowns who promulgate such fooliashness to do so?
The Copelands and their comrades in con are every bit as much victims in this enterprise as those they fleece, but the NYT article is intended to incite anti-religious animosity more than explore the sickness of our society at large both secular and religious.
Poet
You correct there are some serious issues that our society seems to be breeding.
However to ignore the influence of the organized religious groups, is to ignore the mafia and organized criminals that deal in slavery, and drug addition. These individuals may be the products of the system that we have "chosen" (not really) to live in, but they are also immediate threats to the safety and well-being of the society as a whole.
We can discuss how to address, and or more importantly identify, the dysfunction in our societies, but we can not do so with criminals forcing women to take drugs then use their bodies to pay for their addiction. These purveyors of heavenly gifts do no service to the faithful that they minister to.
I will agree with you that the ministers themselves are also trapped.
Constitutionally protected fraud!
Might as well call it what it is.
hey..

"A Walk In VAlley of GREED"
by Robert Sheer/Los Angeles Times
here it is:
http://articles.latimes.com/2002/jan/29/opinion/oe-scheer29
Wall Street to the Obama administration:
Even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of greed, we fear no loss, for you are with us; your TARP and your bailouts, they comfort us.
This should be engraved over the main entrance to the NY Stock exchange.
Reminds me of the insurance industry. People pay for relief and get nothing for it and the "receivers" get stinking rich as a result.
It's one thing to get screwed when you don't have any say in the matter, or should I say, we had our say and no one listened (gov't bailout) and another to get screwed willingly by throwing money to the shysters in the hopes of big rewards from God (greed.) The bottom line is the same. You end up with pockets full of holes. The old adage 'You can't get something for nothing' is for 'us' not 'them.'
Copeland is one of the "salaried pastors" that Isaiah spoke about in the bible. I am not swearing or cussing when I say that he and all those associated with him are God Damned.
They are the lowest of the low. To use Christianity to take people's money is the epitome of dishonesty and corruption. Prison is too good for them. Make them account for every penny. Publish their every indiscretion. Expose their hypocricy. And tax these faux patriots to see if they love their country so much.
god is always on the side of the rich people.
"...who slew the enemy with the jawbone of an ass."
prosperity gospel=Calvinism (predestination of prosperity to the elect)+pay to play
George C. Brown - If you really want to get an idea of how deeply ingrained right-wing Christian Fundamentalism is, read "The Family", by Jeff Sharlett. Excellent job of research, and well documented. It leaves little doubt how the rich (and super rich) have so much power - - on both sides of the aisle!
Now we all know why it says: "In god we trust." on our coke tainted money.

Talk about one born every minute, the God Business pays off. Bet the Copelands are Incorporated like all the other Tub Thumpers.
God and America, a marriage made in heaven?
It's so easy for them to take the money from your pocket and put it in theirs; check their website -you can sign up your credit cards so they can automatically rake off your moolah every month. You asked for it, apparently.
The Bagwan Shree Rashneesh (AKA Osho) Part II? Can the Copelands beat 93 Rolls-Royces?
Truly, this is the Temple of Green.
Why wouldn't the Copelands be believed? All they are doing is amplifying a core belief in the American Dream. The country as a whole rewards the rich and punishes the poor, and justifies itself by arguing the rich must be worthy and hard working to be so blessed and the poor must be lazy and shiftless. That belief lies behind resistance to socialism and the establishment of a fair society for all Americans (which the US projects throughout the world as it topples regimes which seek to establish better systems). It lies behind decent benefits and relief programmes and, fundamentally, fuels the hysterical reaction to the idea of a national health service in the US. It goes against God's will, they feel. Good health that can be bought is God's blessing on the virtuous. Disease is his punishment on the vicious.
Very nicely stated, Briar.
IMO, the sheer number of credulous folks in this country--not to mention the profound depth of their credulity--will prevent a truly progressive America from becoming reality until a few centuries from now, if ever. (Boy, I really hate saying that.)
Jajaja,
this is where it all starts & ends, the belief in a limited, linear,
hierarchic order; - Religion was born and became the death of spirituality.
Commercialized & politicized ‘Spirituality’ became the
foundation & Paradigm of the Linear Culture.
Deriving from these rudimentary, hierarchic thought-patterns of this
Linear Believe System, generations of men have developed a philosophical
and/or theoretical framework for all our scientific schools, theories & laws.
Ownership & Possessions are the main principals of
the Abrahamic Religions, ‘Creation’ became the origin
of identifying Possessions in a hierarchic order.
From there on we have claims of Ownership of any kind
and seizures of Properties of any type.
- Gardens were fenced, fields were sized, quarries claimed,
timeframes set. Land, water, man & beast, plants & minerals
were taken and made the Possession of somebody.
Controlling the world on a strictly materialistic level was a logic,
strait-forward process and seamed to progress successfully for
a few thousand years.
Law & Order were established by the most ruthless & ambitious
individuals on this planet; a mono-culture of egocentrism &
uniformity developed a mobbing & bullying society.
From socialization to education, from science to agriculture,
everything is going down the ‘mono-way’ of growth & expansion
and no alternative is in sight or is systematically suppressed.
Now this paradigm dominates our Planet and finally arrived,
in its ultimate, materialistic form, at a Dead End !
Limited to 'Laws of Attraction' and the 'Belief in Divine Money'
makes these people possessed by possessions.
Addicted to comfort & sugar, security, speed & success these "Believers"
are just an other manifestation of a sick culture which is not only
completely disconnected and in disharmony with life, nature &
the environment, but also in dissonance within itself, -the human mind,
spirit or soul.
Until man has not commonly resolved the global distribution of Possessions
he will be stuck in this, often painful struggle for a “Better Future”,
the transition to a “Happier Place”.
The question is: Who build the Fence around Paradise in the First Place ?
www.quest4belonging.com
The concept of "ownership" of a piece of land confounds me. The earth is the earth. The plants and animals came from the earth. Can a deer own an acre? How about a squirrel? Or a worm? Or an amoeba? What makes it seem logical and correct that a human being can "own" a piece of land? And why should certain groups of people be allowed to "tax" that land? It is really quite bizarre.
And gospel preachers are just as guilty as Wall Streeters...fleecing the public without the least bit of remorse. Does this shystering ever end?
