Fear for Obama's Safety Grows as Hate Groups Thrive on Racial Backlash
Violent Signs, Gun, Standoff Latest in Emerging Anger Towards the President
Experts who track hate groups across the U.S. are growing increasingly concerned over violent rhetoric targeted at President Obama, especially as the debate over health care intensifies and a pattern of threats emerges.
The Secret Service is investigating a Maryland man who held a sign reading "Death to Obama" and "Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids" outside a town hall meeting this week. And in New Hampshire, another man stood across the street from a Presidential town hall with his gun on full display.
Los Angeles police officers apprehended a man Thursday after a standoff with him inside a red Volkswagen Bug car in Westwood, CA the latest disturbing case even though officials said the man had mental problems.
"I don't think these are simply people who are mentally ill or off their rocker," Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, told ABC News of those behind the threats. "In a very real sense they represent a genuine reaction, a genuine backlash against Obama."
Experts say a sharp growth in so-called militia groups that helped spawn a wave of domestic terrorism in the 1990s and are now using YouTube, rock music and the Internet to recruit members and spread hate and fear - shouldn't be ignored.
"It's certainly a scary time," said former FBI agent Brad Garrett, now an ABC News consultant. Garrett said the Secret Service "cannot afford to pass on anyone," and he believes "they really do fear that something could happen to [Obama]."
Garrett said statements like one recently made by controversial radio host Rush Limbaugh comparing a logo for the White House plan to a Nazi symbol "legitimizes people who are on the edge to go do something or say something."
"And if you go and take a look at this, you will find that the Obama health care logo is damn close to a Nazi swastika logo," Limbaugh said.
Later, someone painted a swastika outside the office of Congressman David Scott of Georgia, one of Obama's supporters.
Secret Service Security Around Obama
While officials told ABC News that the President's daily threat matrix has yet to reflect a sharp increase in threats, White House officials privately admit deep concern and have told the Secret Service to keep security tight, even if Obama objects.
"I think the president has, in effect, triggered fears amongst fairly large numbers of white people in this country that they are somehow losing their country, that the battle is lost," Potok told ABC News. "The nation that their Christian white forefathers created has somehow been taken from them."
Asa Eslocker contributed to this report.

Show AllMaybe Malcolm X wasn't far off the mark after all.
SPLC is a fundraising juggernaut which thrives on threat inflation, as shameless in its own way as the NRA. I heard this Potok guy on Pacifica just last night warning against a group calling itself the Oath Keepers.
They are supposedly current and former members of law enforcement and military who have taken an oath not to follow any order to round up and detain US citizens. Potok was pooh-poohing the idea that there might actually be internment camps built by FEMA to house dissidents in the event of massive civil disobedience, and conflating the Oath Keepers with some of the loonies who have been threatening elected officials at town hall meetings.
If there really are trained and armed folks who have sworn to protect the Constitution (and you and me) against an out-of-control state apparatus, how is this a thing to be feared?
Jethro; that last paragraph was an attempt at humour - right?
"...an attempt at humour - right?"
No.
What I have feared for some time is the fundagelical/Christofascist movement within the military, as has been reported on CD from time to time. These people have taken the view that the US has lost its collective soul, and only by abandoning the Constitution and imposing theocracy can we be redeemed. They are the American Taliban, no more nor less.
It sounds to me as if these self-described Oath Keepers (not to be confused with the similar-sounding Promise Keepers, a breed of cat more like the fundies) might be a counterweight to Gen. Peter Pace, Erik Prince and their ilk, who would like nothing better than turning DC into Peshawar-on-the-Potomac.
This is a set-up...
The fascist propogandists rile up the reactionaries in the population into a fervor... Leading to shutting down dialogue at townhall meetings and predictable acts of violence...
Once the kettle boils over... They will have justification for implementing Stasi-like spying & Nazi-like policing of the public at large...
As more wingnuts start to gun down their fellow citizens, this will justify more security state tactics like checkpoints on roads and search & seizures of citizens...
Then the stage will be set for an agent provacateur or MKUltra assassin to take a shot at a senator...
More draconian laws will be passed, like laws against public assembly and "free speech" & "gun control"... Then the next "false-flag event" will take place and Martial Law will be declared and the round-ups will begin... There are over 800 FEMA camps waiting for any dissidents who will protest...
And all the educated & willfully-ignorant liberals will continue to think that Obama is doing a "Heck-of-a-job" in the face of such extreme conditions...
They will continue to work their university and non-profit jobs and educated conservatives will continue to work their corporate management jobs... Continuing to support the empire by working and shopping and being entertained by Bread&Circus...
and keep a low profile out of fear of being the next one to be hauled off to the FEMA camps...
According to the current issue of Mother Jones... Obama's Education Secretary Arne Duncan launched a pilot program of six Army schools in the Chicago school district as the head of the Chicago schools... Now Obama is having him extend the program nation wide... America's version of the Hitler Youth Brigade... Very scary indeed...
Is there a Stalin out there somewhere, watching the pot boil?
I should go home. Lock the door, pull the shades. Then slip out the back & sneak up to Vermont. Right near the border. Hunker down & watch.
You got cable & Twinkies in Vermont, right?
Get off this Cold War garbage about Stasi. The fact is that word should never be put in the same sentence with the Nazis. Let's get real! The fallacy of the false equation is that East bloc Communism was as bad as Naziism is as off the wall as it can damn be. The "terrible Communists" in Moscow won the Second World War with some good moral support from the West, no doubt thanks to such "Communist loving" progressives such as Franklin D Roosevelt and one "Communist loving," Tory, Winston Churchill. The left and right have never been morally equivalent.

Do your own research... The same banksters (Rockefeller, Morgan, Rothschild, etc) that funded the industrialization of Tzarist Russia also hedged their bets by funding the Bolsheviks... The very same banksters who threw their weight behind Stalin and Mussolini & Franco & Salazar & Hitler's rise to power...
The same banksters that created the fascist state of Israel... The same banksters that created the CIA front banks and insurance giants that have morphed into the likes of AIG, BearStearns, LeymanBros, GoldmanSachs, BoA, and Chase... The same banksters that profit off of the privatized military contractors and security state and surveillance technology companies today...
Ever heard of Harriman/Brown Bros....? Prescott Bush & the failed fascist coup against Roosevelt that Smedley Butler blew the whistle on...? FISA? Full Spectrum Dominance? It is you that hasn't thawed out your brain from cold war thinking...
Google & Read E.P. Heidner's "Collateral Damage Pt 1 & 2" if you have the courage to educate yourself about the behind-the-scenes power dynamics...
Mammon's minions want black man's blood.
Reading the comments at my local TV news site and at our local paper -- they should be scared for Mr. Obama. Too many people believe he really isn't a citizen, really is a fascist and a socialist (at the same time) and any other hateful, braindead thing they hear on Faux News or from Rush Limbaugh. And because they are afraid for their jobs, afraid for their future, afraid, afraid, afraid, I do believe the more violently inclined among them are more prone to stupid acts then they normally would be.
