Former Rwandan Minister Gets 30 Years for Genocide Role
A Rwandan ex-deputy interior minister who tricked thousands of people into hiding on a hill where they were butchered has been jailed for genocide.
Callixte Kalimanzira, 54, was sentenced to 30 years for his role in the 1994 slaughter.
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda heard he supervised massacres in the southern region of Butare.
More than 800-000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in the 100-day genocide that shocked the world.
The international tribunal - which sits in Tanzania - is due to complete its work by the end of this year, but has asked for more time.
In his 2005 indictment, Kalimanzira was accused of luring thousands of Tutsi civilians to take refuge at Kabuye Hill in Ndora commune.
But when they arrived, hoping to find food and shelter, militias murdered them.
Kalimanzira - who was arrested in 2005 and pleaded not guilty - was also accused of seeking military and police reinforcements for the massacre.
He is said to have been a close ally of Rwanda's president and prime minister during the genocide.
According to Reuters news agency, Kalimanzira's sentencing raises the number of ICTR's judgments to 38, six of which were acquittals.
The ICTR was set up to try the ringleaders of the genocide.

Show AllYou see what happens when you come from a powerless country? You get convicted of genocide.
Now, if only "justice" can be extended to other countries.
Re. the 1994 genocide, if technically it is a genocide, but while it's referred to that way anyway and many people were massacred, ..., it's not only African leadership persons who should be tried, convicted, and sentenced; the Bill Clinton administration was also very guilty in this. And I believe to recall that the U.S. wasn't solely guilty as far as western imperialist, ... governments are considered, for I believe some others, like Canada, f.e., was also somewhat guilty in this. I'd need to verify that to be certain, but the U.S. was definitely guilty, very.
Plenty of people have written well on this, people with articles at, f.e., www.globalresearch.ca . There are other websites, as well, with good articles, but those I read were mostly at globalresearch.ca; although Keith Harmon Snow probably has additional articles at his own website, www.allthingspass.com, Larry China and other writers writing for www.OnlineJournal.com, etcetera. They all had articles at www.globalresearch.ca, but more at these other two websites, too. www.DissidentVoice.org is surely a website with this topic well covered. www.BlackAgendaReport.com would surprisingly not cover the topic well, as well. Etcetera.
I believe it's a prosecutor in the related tribunal who wanted to have Bill Clinton and perhaps, if not probably, other members of the Clinton administration also investigated or put on trial, this person with an article or two at www.globalresearch.ca . Not recalling her (am pretty sure this was a woman) name, I can't tell you what it is; only knowing there was an article, maybe two, by her at GR, from what I recall. If these weren't by her, then these quoted or else strongly reported what she said. In any case, that there was at least one prosecution member who wanted to go after the Clinton administration would be easy enough to find with simple, enough, Web searches.
Guilty African or former African leaders and government officials being tried and convicted is well, okay, but it's also maintaining the whitewashing, cover-up of the guilty people of the U.S.
