Obama 'Hope' Poster Artist Arrested in Boston
Shepard Fairey, the controversial street artist riding a roller coaster of publicity with his red, white, and blue posters of President Barack Obama, was arrested last night on his way to DJ an event kicking off his exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art.
A lot of people know Fairey from his days of plastering Boston & Providence with Andre The Giant stickers. Police confirmed later Saturday that the warrants were for graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career. Fairey, a 38-year-old known for his countercultural style, was arrested on two outstanding warrants and was being held at a police station, according to a police official with knowledge of the arrest who requested anonymity.
Police could not describe the nature of the outstanding warrants last night, but said they were based in Massachusetts.
Fairey has been arrested at least 14 times, he has told the Globe.
The artist was arrested at about 9:15 p.m. as he was about to enter a sold-out dance event at the Institute of Contemporary Art on Northern Avenue, known as "Experiment Night." The event is geared toward a younger-age crowd, with techno-style music, and more than 750 people were waiting for him, some of whom had bought tickets for the event on Craigslist for as much as $500.
Fairey was supposed to appear as a guest DJ for the kickoff of his exhibit, Supply and Demand, which will run through Aug. 16. He was scheduled to go on stage at about 10:30 p.m., and an hour later organizers reported to the crowd that he was arrested.
"We're very disappointed," said Paul Bessire, deputy director of the Institute of Contemporary Art.
"Shepard Fairey is a wonderful artist who created some positive work and we were very pleased to present his work here and around the city. We feel he is an influential artist."
Fairey, a street artist, graphic designer, and political activist, is best known for his "Obey Giant" campaign of stickers, stencils, and posters in the early 1990s.
Most recently, he has achieved fame with the red, white, and blue posters of Obama, emblazoned with the words "Hope," "Progress," and "Change."
The president used the posters during his campaign, and one of the displays in Fairey's exhibit includes a typed letter from Obama that read: "I am privileged to be a part of your art work and proud to have your support."
Fairey was recently seen with Mayor Thomas M. Menino in an event to promote his show, and banners raised at City Hall also announce the exhibit.
At the same time, however, anti-graffiti activists complained that a street artist was going to be the subject of a museum show.
But Bessire said, "We feel he is an influential artist. We were just very pleased and felt fortunate to show his work."
The arrest of Fairey -- who cites linguistic theorist Noam Chomsky with a poster that reads, "I lived with the system and took no offence/until Chomsky lent me the necessary sense" -- helped maintain his counterculture reputation.
"I wouldn't say it's cool he was arrested, but I think it shows he has integrity," said Bill Galligan, a graphic designer. Some in the crowd last night speculated the incident may have been a publicity stunt.
Ginny Delany, a 27-year-old graduate student from Cambridge, said, "It makes him even more of a hero to me.
"The fact that he is arrested for his art shows that it is meaningful to him and he cares about what he is doing."
David Rosen, a 19-year-old from Allston, said last night that he was disappointed with the arrest, but "I understand that his art requires him to take risks."
Christopher Muther of the Globe staff contributed to this report.

It will be interesting to find out what these warrants are all about.
"I lived with the system and took no offence/until Chomsky lent me the necessary sense."
I'll bet the "Patriot Act"(ors) don't like Noam Chomsky or anyone else who engages in necessary sense.
I'll take a chance and say perhaps something along the lines of graffiti or pot smoking. I doubt it's torture or starting wars based on lies and killing hundreds of thousands. There are no warrants out for that.

Yes, so very true _ J O E _,
Those responsible -- whose impact is unwarranted hero's & innocent's blood shewn grotesquely across the world's map -- do "warrant" even more GRAPHIC and just actions for such reprehensible conduct.
To lead us to illegal wars and DEATH is a far more wicked act than mere street paint artistically calling forth our better nature and societal balance.

Only in Boston!
It was most likely an old vandalism/graffitti charge he's been hitting up the east coast with Andre the Giant for years. It won't hurt his rep any.

The arrest - the timing - cannot stop the important work of speaking Truth to Power. Bully-systems always back-fire.
This fits the 1984 Fascist State Plan just fine. Arrest some artists, gays, journalists, bloggers, progressive talk radio hosts, and we will all shut up and go home. Nothing to see here. Mr. Obama should speak up in defense of Mr. Fairey as a shot across the bow for these police-state morons to take notice. Ha! I'm not holding my breath.
I don't think we should have a Government.
I think we should all just run wild.
But only idiots give the system that opening-by allowing warrants to exist, usually for FTA's and VOP's. Dumb. Especially if you are likely to be in their cross-hairs.
Nice poster though, and I dig Obama.

That stuff isn't future thinking.
It's now.
Bring America Back !!!!....... Okay, in fairness, there are outstanding warrants for George W. Bush and Richard Cheney in Vermont==Brattlesboro County as I recall and maybe two warrants in New Hampshire--close to the summer fish and vacation haunts; one warrant in Berkeley, California in case "W" takes a refresher course in Ethics at UCLA !!
**An old joke goes: the chances of finding a Republican in Massachusetts are about as good as finding a Democrat in Florida !! Well, we found lots of Dems in Fla--call them latinos, call them girls for Barak, call them sick & tired chad counters==sufficient that Florida went blue for Obama !!!
**Now as far as finding a Repubby in Mass---is that guy --that Mormon, that fella named Mitt Romney still Governor up there ??? Mitt certainly would not be putting up with any Obama-supporting contemporary artist named "Shepard", not in his Boston, mind you !! To the dungeon with him !!!! Et Tu Brute !
UCLA in Berkeley!!
TruthKnoller must be the nom de blog of Miss Teenage South Carolina.
The charge is graffiti:

It's amazing how misplaced all the priorites in the US are.
Never is what really matters addressed or even given real thought.
Obama should pardon this guy!
this will give him some new material to DRAW on . . .
Yeah yeah, we get the PICTURE . . . : )

Justice and Liberty for ALL.
It's clear this arrest is a direct insult to the President. These trumped up charges should be pardoned immediately by Obama to set the tone of the nation.
NO MORE POLICE STATE!
I didn't vote for Obama. I was afraid he was just another corporate clown.
Let's hope I was greatly mislead and greatly mistaken.
But we shall see if this attrocity is addressed.
Let's see what kind of man he is. He should rain down death and destruction upon a police department that would dare do such a thing.

you can bet that had this artist shown that "i am a believer in jesus christ who is my personal lord and saviour" and made art that christian america would celebrate as additions to "the glory of Jesus our saviour in America the Christian Nation" ....he's be DELUGED with Mega Church celebrity.....
this is now like the mirror-image of what it was in the Soviet Union -- where they suppressed artists, musicians that were deemend "reactionary" and "bourgouis" and "Decadent" because they didn't make art or music that reflected the principles of the "sickle and the hammer" -- or prevented artists from touring outside of the Soviet region of influence...or artists would be denied audience and made to undergo "re-education".
what is WORSE about this is that the United States of America BRAGS and PREACHES about "Liberty" ...and this is the height and highest level of hypocrisy.
this goes hand in hand with the USA Championing the "free market" and "competition" BUT CAN"T ABIDE it when it comes for REAL from alternative ideas and then manipulates things to benefit its promotion of "free competition"....and right there, in essence is its Contradictory Hypocrisy.
it is like the Pastor, Preacher, Priest on the lectern lecturing everyone about righteousness -- and then his every consciousess behind the facade is having sex with his altar boys or girls .
Great post Teddy.
I am the first to admit that I don't agree with a lot of what you post, however, a post like what you just made.... I cherish.
The strength of America is it's diversity. And the only reason we have survived "the idiot president" is because we beleive that democracy is the supreme voice of the people.
I salute you sir,

"Most well known for his "Obey Giant" street posters, Shepard Fairey has carefully nurtured a reputation as a heroic guerilla street artist waging a one man campaign against the corporate powers-that-be. Infantile posturing aside, Fairey’s art is problematic for another, more troubling reason - that of plagiarism."

I just read the article of the above link...
I don't have much sympathy for a copycat cut'n'paste photo-shop "artist"...
At first I thought it was just a case of copyright violation for an AP photo...
After seeing the litany of political posters and revolutionary images that he copied, I have to wonder...
Beyond the tasteless "referencing" other artists work without giving due credit or royalties...
Beyond commercializing revolutionary and counter culture images for a profit...
Beyond having no awareness of the historical or political meaning of the images he is lifting from...
The art sucks... Meaningless Iconic imagery of Andre the giant and the word "OBEY" superimposed on each and every poster...
Which demean the values and message of those iconclasts whose images the "artist" uses...
Revolutionaries like Che & Angela Davis and members of the Black Panthers did not struggle...
Just so some kid could commodify their face onto t-shirts and jeans sold in some boutique...
even Andre the Giant had more creative energy as an actor and wrestler than this hack...
I've seen better art in my high school silkscreen class...
"Fairey -- who cites linguistic theorist Noam Chomsky with a poster that reads, 'I lived with the system and took no offence/until Chomsky lent me the necessary sense'"
Hmmm...isn't this a ripoff of a Joe Strummer lyric?
"Karlo marx and fredrich engels
Came to the checkout at the 7-11
Marx was skint - but he had sense
Engels lent him the necessary pence"

Everything this guy does is a rip-off...
Seems to be.
