Nader Throws Hat in the Ring Against Limbaugh
Criticizes radio host over stimulus
Another combatant joined the ever-expanding Limbaugh wars Monday.
Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh talks with guests in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, prior to a Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony for Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Australian Prime Minister John Howard. (AP Photo/Ron Edmonds) Consumer activist Ralph Nader challenged Rush Limbaugh to reimburse the American public for his multimillion-dollar salary -- adding more discord to the life of the radio host, who skirts the line between media heavy and uber-politico.
"It's amazing how he gets away with it. Rush Limbaugh hammers away about big government and welfare and yet he's the corporate welfare king," Mr. Nader said. "He's an unctuous megalomaniac."
Mr. Nader, who turns 75 this month, was as ferocious about Mr. Limbaugh as he once was about smog.
"You are making this money on the public property of the American people for which you pay no rent. You, Rush Limbaugh, are on welfare," Mr. Nader wrote in a letter to the host, who has broadcast for two decades and enjoys a weekly audience of 20 million listeners on 600 stations.
"As you know, the public airwaves belong to the American people. The Federal Communications Commission is supposed to be our trustee in managing this property. The people are the landlords and the radio and TV stations and affiliated companies are the tenants," Mr. Nader said.
He urged Mr. Limbaugh "to set a capitalist example for his peers and pay rent to the American people for the very lucrative use of their property. You need not wait for the broadcast industry-indentured FCC and Congress to do the right thing. You can lead by paying a voluntary rent -- determined by a reputable appraisal organization."
"This is a ridiculous idea. Rush Limbaugh already pays his dues to the American people in the form of income tax," said Michael Harrison, editor of Talkers Magazine, which tracks talk radio.
"Limbaugh is a very influential entertainer who also informs and influences. He makes waves. That's nothing new. If Nader wants to attack a big moneymaker, he should attack all the big moneymakers. Jay Leno and Tina Fey are also influential entertainers," Mr. Harrison said.
Mr. Nader can get in line, though.
Mr. Limbaugh has been recently criticized by progressive, liberal and Democratic adversaries who are particularly vexed by Mr. Limbaugh's recent proclamation that he hoped President Obama "fails," prompting the president to warn lawmakers to ignore such talk. The feud escalated into a media war after Mr. Limbaugh penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal challenging Mr. Obama's economic stimulus plan.
On Tuesday, Moveon.org, Americans United for Change and other interest groups are set to launch TV and radio ads in 12 states targeting a half-dozen Republican senators, urging them to spurn Mr. Limbaugh's "extreme partisan" opinion and back the stimulus plan.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched a "Rush to Judgement" petition drive against Mr. Limbaugh last week, while CNN's James Carville wrote an editorial, deconstructing Mr. Limbaugh's economic theories.
But even Mr. Nader acknowledged that media wars have unusual dynamics.
"Rush Limbaugh has to re-invent himself, and Obama gave him manna form heaven when he told Republicans not to react," Mr. Nader said. "And if Limbaugh gets cornered, he resorts to plan B -- which is to claim he's just an entertainer."

Ralph knows karate and would take Limbaugh out in a heartbeat.
Maybe if I take some karate lessons, I won't be mugged the next time by some fringe Obamabots as not even my pistol could save my Nader/Gonzolas t-shirt from ruins. :(
Ralph is from Conneticut.

Nader is the nation's conscience. Limbaugh has no conscience.
Rush Limbaugh is a disgrace and the dittoheads (do they even still exist?) are one of the reasons for all the discord in our politics today. This groups of mainly men, never found a progressive idea they couldn't denigrade, never found a decent woman they could denigrade and most often still do. Those hypocrites talk about illicit drug use and old Rushie, well, has his hand in the cookie jar. He should be in jail or prison, just like the common folks on rx drugs he so often badmouths. Useless piece of garbarge. Make Rushie irrlevent - stop listening to his dribble or should I say drool?
Who is this Ruskie Limbjaw and what does he do ?
Ursa
For all those people out ther who believe what Rush Limbaugh Prophesizes - Maybe he should tell them to Go jump off Cliff -
One day Rush will get into such an angry tirade that his head will explode. Unfortunately, out of the goo will come a million little Rushies who will take over the airwaves and convince Americans once and for all that the rich need tax cuts and the rest of us can live on soggy bread.
I think he signed a $30 million multi year contract. That is enough money to feed all of the starving people in Africa for a year. There is something obscene about someone making that much money based on his big fat mouth. He is a predator on our political divisions, exactly what we don't need right now. Much was said in anticipation of Obama's bail out plan needing bipartisan support. And then you have this sociopath exploiting the situation with "I hope he fails." His devotees will be quick to defend him by saying that what Rush is saying is he is against big government.
But, where was Rush through the Bush administration? Bush left us not only big government, but gargantuan government. The Bush bail out plan for Wall Street included the creation of government agencies to handle the toxic loans. And this is the hypocrisy. Bush gets a pass on a Wall Street white collar bail out but Obama does not get a pass for a Main Street blue collar bail out.
$30 million? Wow, think of how much Oxycontin that could buy-- or how many underage male prostitutes in the Dominican.
NMLib
Obama made a stupid mistake by even acknowledging Rush's existence. Memo to Obama - move agressively with your agenda and totally disregard people like Rush and those on Fox. Bush and Co. did it to the liberal/progressives and were very effective in pushing thru their (albeit disastrous) agenda. Wake up Mr. President!!!
Yeah it was stupid, but understandable, in the sense that this was just an offhand comment that the media, and Rush, seized on. I doubt Obama will make such a mistake again.
The local station that airs Rush Limbaugh also airs approximately 15 hours of neo-conservative talk a day.
There is no progressive, liberal or independent programs on the station.
This is in blue Chicago, Obama's home town.
This is fair? This is the marketplace deciding?
No.
This is corporate propaganda aimed at the American people and is an illegal act.
The license to broadcast on this station needs to be ripped from the corporation that presents this garbage.
Stations such as this one exist in virtually every city in the country.

CYGNUS: This is such an important point, along with your earlier posting about the opening of the "digital frontier" with new "leases" only allotted to the already pivileged pre-existing broadcast beneficiaries. Just as public school dumbs down the minds of children so they are generally unable to think critically, media plays its part in continuing the charade. Imagine if learning really opened mental channels, and imagine if television complemented that agenda with programs that taught preparation of whole foods, yoga, natural massage, how to plant and sustain organic gardens, debates among different religious persons who SEEK consensus, talk shows with spiritually aware persons or those committed to deep ecology. The list is endless, but you'll seldom find this sort of content on MSM which makes it seem flakey or odd or marginalized. Seldom did a country need alternative thinking more, or a media version of a mass lobotomy!
So true...
And while it's hard for me to respond without sarcasm to posts about Rush, I may have something significant to contribute.
What about starting a community radio station in your area?
I understand this is very difficult in Chicago because of some technical problems with broadcast areas, or something like that...I've talked to people from Chicago about it before...
Community radio stations can be an antidote to those ubiquitous left-hand-side-of-the-dial NPR competitors, the Bott Radio Networks (a midwestern incanation), the "Christian" messages and news, and the Rushes.
If Nader could use his skills and access to rid us of Limbaugh he would be performing a great public service, and actually accomplish more than he could as an elected politician.
Had he been elected, RN would not have sold out as Obama has and will continue to do and in the long run would have accomplished much more than Obama ever will. He has a track record of helping the average Joe. What's Obama done, other than vote for the first bailout?
FCC Anounces 80 City 'We're Not Listening' Digital TV Tour
by Bruce Dixon
All most of us know about the transition to digital TV are two things. The first thing we know is that some people will need converter boxes on their old TVs to receive the new digital broadcasts. The second thing we know is that digital broadcast technology will enable high definition TV. As far as corporate broadcasters and the FCC are concerned, that's all we need to know, and those are the boundaries of legitimate public discourse.
What the FCC and broadcasters are actively concealing from the public is that digital broadcasting technology enables thousands of new digital TV channels on the public broadcast spectrum, all of which broadcasters have allocated to themselves without the inconvenient public scrutiny issuing thousands of new station licenses might have attracted. Thus minorities and women, local entrepreneurs, colleges and universities, community, civic and labor organizations and local governments who otherwise might acquire a portion of the new digital TV channels and used them to broadcast local news, arts, information and public service in hundreds of US markets have been frozen out of the chance to serve the public over the public's airwaves without even the bother of public explanation or debate.

** The same corporations that helped sell the Iraq WMD lie have been rewarded with the new digital stations. Why is this? Why weren't you or I given one of these valuable broadcast signals? These stations could literally be worth trillions of dollars.
Give Ralph his own show.
Ralph doesn't need to be "given" anything...
If he was at all interested in hosting a tv show, he would have done so by now...
Anyone can get a spot on public access tv... Even dudes taking bong hits & amateur porn...
Besides, with his personal & political capital, there are ample resources for him to do it...
I think Nader prefers to do the talk show circuit, and play the role of agitator/advocate...
And the likes of Limpdick are "The Patriotic Ones". http://www.wisecountyissues.com
Thanks CD heads you gave me a couple of well needed giggles.----------Thanks ------------- Peace -------
I think it's great that fat stupid prejudiced scared white men have a figurehead. Go Rush. Lead us to oblivion!
Many people are blasting the de facto head of the Rethuglic party and the chief dittohead, Blush Limpdick.
Some people say that Blush Limpdick isn't fit to sleep with pigs.
But I defend him.
I say he is.
He wouldn't last long with pigs; they'd eat him.
Those poor pigs!
At least HE thinks he's fit to sleep with someone. But, he apparently has his limitations or Flush Limpballs wouldn't have been caught with someone else's Viagra prescription.
A real David and Goliath duo there.
Rush Limbaugh - the "brain" that drives the repug cyborg.
It's high time we brought back the Fairness Doctrine, requiring broadcasters to present opposing opinions.
The Fairness Doctrine: How We Lost it, and Why We Need it Back

Rush Limbaugh truly reminds me of the character that Ned Beatty played in the movie "Deliverance" that was made to "squeal like a pig." Also that isn't saying much for his adherents. What do they call themselves "shitto heads?"
Democrats can sure learn a HELL of a lot from Ralph Nader. I hate the way the Obamabots treat Nader so badly.
I can never forget the time last year just two days before the election when I was nearly mugged by a couple of die-hard Obamaites. They ripped apart my Nader/Gonzolas T-shirt. I took out my gun shot both of them in the legs. The cops arrived and understood the situation as I explained to them and let me go and they even defended me in court the next month. I couldn't repair my shirt and on that election day, I could not get over the trauma and fear. I also felt that it was no use and gave up out of fear and anguish. I think we need to build a stronger Progressive Independent Infrastructure so that someday, someone as progressive-minded as Nader can lead the way. Only then will we break the two party barrier and can keep the Obama-ites and Limbaugh-ites at bay.
You must be writing from prison.
Nope. A friendly couple who happened to witness it helped me along with the police officer defend myself in court. The charge was dropped and those two muggers were order to pay up and I wasn't required to pay for their leg injuries.
My apologies, then. I can never remember a time when people in this country would mug somebody else over some politics.
It happens right around election time. Last year was in fact the first time it happened in both the primaries and the general election. It was highest in the primaries and even made it to national news. 3rd parties are usually not mugged at unless deemed a "threat" to the status quo and even then not as much vandalism and assaulting. I just happened to be lucky to be wearing my turtle neck under my t-shirt and wearing boots to kick them hard to the ground so that I'd have enough time to pull my gun out of my handbag and shoot their legs so as to not kill them. They tried to get up and attack and were about to use their knives to stab me as if my t-shirt wasn't enough but I shot them. Very scary day indeed.
Wasn't a woman arrested in Pittsburgh for making a claim very much like this? The non-existent black man who mugged her because she had McCain-Palin stickers on her car? He even scratched a backwards "B" on her forehead because he was looking in a mirror while he did it? Yeah, right - it was ALL HER!!! The bank ATM she claimed to be at didn't exist, she scratched and beat up herself, all to make an Obama follower look bad. So did they ask to see your conceal carry license? I find it hard to believe that in today's world, you weren't at the very least investigated for carrying a loaded weapon. Your story sounds very fictitious, at the minimum. And, no, I'm not anti-gun. I'm all for responsible gun ownership - but, the fact is, whenever anyone on the street fires a gun hitting someone else, they do not simply hear the witnesses versions and let the person go. And, you were in court only a month later? In OUR backed up court system? My daughter couldn't even get a court date that fast for a DUI!!!!
Pittsburgh is anti-gun. I live in Virginia and even in Northern VA, there's some leeway. I didn't go to jail because I did not kill either one of them and in fact since they both had knives and my shirt was hanging on me torn, I won. Call me a liar if you wish but I only report the facts.
I concur...
This story sounds bogus on several levels...
It reads like a rehashed rumor psyops to seed discontent...
If this experience actually happened, then it would have made the news cycle at least once...
The "victim" this time is a Nader fan, the perps are once again Obama supporters...
The writer is tainting all Obama supporters as being dangerous by the t-shirts they are wearing...
The writer then uses the opportunity to espouse some political philosophy about Nader...
I find it hard to believe that a Nader fan would find herself being attacked by any true Obama fan based on political ideology...
And I find it hard to believe that a Nader fan would even be carrying a gun in the first place...
In a liberal college town my Nader yard sign was stolen in less than a few hours. But luckily I was not forced to pull out my piece...

I voted for Nader myself, but I find this story hard to believe. Can you give us a link?
only then will we break the two party barrier and can keep the Obama-ites and Linbaugh-ites at bay.
best way? shoot them in the legs!
Too bad James Carville wasn't up to the task of posting a sound reply to Mr. Limbaugh. (James, Democratic votes made war in Iraq possible.) Two sides of the same coin?
The debate I would like to see would be between Ann Coulter and Keith Olbermann. Their subject would be the merits of the Theory of Evolution, and the debate's moderator would be Bill Maher.
If I am not mistaken, all three attended and received their undergraduate degrees from Cornell University, so maybe the debate could take place in Ithaca -- perhaps as a fundraiser?
I agree with jbarret in that Obama should never have acknowledged Limbaugh's existance. Obama as President should be above that. He should spend time, rather, with acknowledging CUBA's existance and negotiating with "our" adversaries; such as his "Christian" faith dictated in the HOLY WRIT. The "Christian" west needs to get their heads out of the Old Testament and into the New. The Old being as violent as they say the Koran is, and the New representing Jesus' doctrine of trying to get along with everybody. I know that sounds pretty un-American, but perhaps it would do us good to get us some CHANGE we can believe in(I think I've heard that somewhere). I think our Christian faith is being misrepresented by our "christian mouthpieces" who are being informed by the likes of Rush, and the Billy Graham's and Jerry Falwell's and Pat Robertson's of mainstream evangelical christian "Kill a commie for christ" TV preachers who give the "good news" to those who never crack the New Testament or don't believe HE who they "follow" as much as they believe talk radio and talk tv. I went off on a tangent, but out here everything has to do with everything else!

John: An analogy on Christ: A construction worker I dated many moons ago told me that geniuses designed buildings but virtual idiots had to work the plans and actually build them. Christ was such an advanced soul that the teachings he came to relate were not exactly followed, which is to say "built" into frameworks that reflected the lessons and intentions He left behind.
As far as the examples you cited who use the market-brand "Christian" along with their self-selected titles, these persons flaunt religion but are bereft of anything remotely akin to faith in anything but mammon (their own profit) and Mars (killing or destroying someone else, usually someone less well-armed, to "prove" their obviously compromised sense of "mahhood").
Actually, there is no proof for the existence of the historical Jesus, nor the soul.
amen I say, amen. there is 100 proof in a bottle of vodka, but no proof in a soul, now what does that tell you?
It tells us what spirits really are? :)
Rush, isn't he the guy that changed the word nitwit to dittohead for us Americans?
The Geobbels of talk radio has: twenty million listeners; 600 radio stations; and is the #1 radio talk show in America. Enough said!
