Fresh Evidence of Israeli Phosphorus Use in Gaza Emerges
GAZA - Fresh evidence of the firing of white phosphorus weapons by Israeli forces in Gaza has emerged from witnesses heard by the Guardian and first hand accounts by human rights groups of their use against civilians.
Graphic descriptions of attacks by Israeli forces near the Gaza town of Khan Younis are contained in footage shot by Fida Qishta for the International Solidarity Movement and obtained by the Guardian.
A woman described how on Tuesday Israeli forces "started to fire phosphorus bombs against the people, of course, they are civilians ..."
A man added: "A fire broke out and we have to leave out. Fires broke out on the top of the houses. We all jumped out with our women and daughters put off the fire. They were doing that, to help the special forces to occupy the houses. after we put off the fires, they started to shoot towards us. Then they started to raze the houses".
He said the fires were caused by phosphorus bombs and missiles. Israeli artillery also fired white phosphorus shells at Gaza City, Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch, said yesterday.
Three white phosphorus shells were fired at the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza City on Thursday, according to people there.
Phosphorus shells burst in the air billowing white smoke before dropping the phosphate shell. Each shell contain more than 100 wavers which, when ignited, pump out smoke for about 10 minutes.
Contact with the shell remnants cause severe burns, sometimes burning the skin to the bone, consistent with descriptions by Ahmed Almi, the Egyptian doctor at the Al-Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis after attacks last Tuesday. Almi said after an hour the entire body of one victim was burned.
Chemicals in smoke produced by white phosphorus shells and burning chemical particles can cause severe respiratory problems.
According to the report from the International Solidarity Movement, many patients at the Khan Younis hospital were suffering from serious breathing difficulties after inhaling smoke.
The use of white phosphorous as a weapon - as opposed to its use as an obscurant and infrared blocking smoke screen - is banned by the Third Convention on Conventional Weapons which covers the use of incendiary devices. Though Israel is not a signatory to the convention, its military manuals reflect the restrictions on its use in that convention.
Instead of producing high velocity burning fragments like conventional white phosphorus weapons used to in the past, M825A1 rounds of the kind identified as being fired by Israeli forces produce what he called a "series of large slower burning wedges which fall from the sky", said Neil Gibson, technical adviser to Jane's Missiles and Rockets.
Israel's use of heavy artillery in residential areas of Gaza City violates the prohibition under the laws of war against indiscriminate attacks and should be stopped immediately, Human Rights Watch said yesterday.
"Firing 155mm shells into the center of Gaza City, whatever the target, will likely cause horrific civilian casualties," Garlasco said.

Show AllIsrael's Army (the 'most moral Army' in the world) has no problem lobbing 155mm shells into UN shelters crowded with refugees either.
The waffle in the use of white phosphorus as a direct weapon as opposed to a smoke screen is what gives the IDF deniability here (and the US forces did the same thing in Falluja in their own reenactment of Geurnica).
The use of white phosphorus as a smoke screen in itself thus becomes a smokescreen, hiding the fact the smoke itself is poison, combined with the fact that until the last bits of it have oxidized, collateral damage of civilians is inevitable -- in particular and especially here where the stuff is use in densely packed urban areas.
On top of every thing else, the IDF not only lies but uses lies as a delaying tactic to blunt public opinion until the job at hand is done. Again, this is parallel to the US military's activity in its present War Zones.

I'm sure that the people of Israel, with American government assistance, will find a way to slam the doors shut on this gas chamber called Gaza.
Egypt is not ready to accept the new deal and says the tunnels are mainly used for aid that all people need, not weapons.

Israel said it is going to keep up the invasion of Gaza "until the last minute".
It also says it is close to that goal...What is happening in a couple of days to make Israel think the Last minute is near?
Do you think they are doin this now because they are not certain of how President Obama would react?
Israel already has the means to intercept those stupid rockets but I have not heard of any being shot down yet.
See http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/01/israel-thinking.html
Do ya think Israel needs the rockets from Gaza to "justify" their war crimes now?
Think about this for a moment.... Israel is acting with
complete impunity with the Entire world watching....
One can only IMAGINE what these Savages would be doing
if NO ONE was watching.... I think they would be
operating large portable gas chambers and then burning
the bodies in large incinerators.....
I'm thinking when this is over there are gonna be a whole
lot of Palestinians taking flight training lessons if ya
get my drift..... Have a super day!!!
Wow turfbill,
what a post. Jews gassing people to death with phospherous shards.
Now I've seen everything.
Now the WWII holocaust is meaningless. It seems Homo sapiens will torture and exterminate innocents any time they feel they can get away with it.

The Israeli media continuously emphasises Israel's restraint by underscoring the gap between what the military forces could do to the Palestinians and what they actually do. Here are a few examples of the refrains Israelis hear daily while listening to the news:
• Israel could bomb houses from the air without warning, but it has military personnel contact – by phone no less – the residents 10 minutes in advance of an attack to alert them that their house is about to be destroyed. The military, so the subtext goes, could demolish houses without such forewarnings, but it does not do so because it values human life.
• Israel deploys teaser bombs – ones that do not actually ruin houses – a few minutes before it fires lethal missiles; again, to show that it could kill more Palestinians but chooses not to do so.
• Israel knows that Hamas leaders are hiding in al-Shifa hospital. The intimation is that it does not raze the medical centre to the ground even though it has the capacity to do so.
• Due to the humanitarian crisis the Israeli military stops its attacks for a few hours each day and allows humanitarian convoys to enter the Gaza Strip. Again, the unspoken claim is that it could have barred these convoys from entering.
The message Israel conveys through these refrains has two different meanings depending on the target audience.
To the Palestinians, the message is one that carries a clear threat: Israel's restraint could end and there is always the possibility of further escalation. Regardless of how lethal Israel's military attacks are now, the idea is to intimidate the Palestinian population by underscoring that the violence can always become more deadly and brutal. This guarantees that violence, both when it is and when it is not deployed, remains an ever-looming threat.
The message to the Israelis is a moral one. The subtext is that the Israeli military could indiscriminately unleash its vast arsenal of violence, but chooses not to, because its forces, unlike Hamas, respect human life.
This latter claim appears to have considerable resonance among Israelis, and, yet, it is based on a moral fallacy. The fact that one could be more brutal but chooses to use restraint does not in any way entail that one is moral. The fact that the Israeli military could have razed the entire Gaza Strip, but instead destroyed only 15% of the buildings does not make its actions moral. The fact that the Israeli military could have killed thousands of Palestinian children during this campaign, and, due to restraint, killed "only" 300, does not make Operation Cast Lead ethical.
Ultimately, the moral claims the Israeli government uses to support its actions during this war are empty. They actually reveal Israel's unwillingness to confront the original source of the current violence, which is not Hamas, but rather the occupation of the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem.

One could add that while Israel says it has the power to destroy Gaza but it is too moral to do so, it also claims to be the victim. It even talks about calling a Truce. As if it isnt just firing into a prison it created.
The false sense of equal sides.
You cant be all powerful and the ultimate victim at the same time.
According to Uri Avnery, Hamas didnt do what Israel expected-which was to cave in and beg for mercy.
Israel had to give in because it doesnt want to piss off Obama on his inauguration.
"Give me liberty or at least two shoes to hurl"
@Webber: your post is clear & one that I can agree with.
This cannot be properly called a war, Israel has the latest hi-tech weapons, an
army, a navy and an airforce; what does Hamas have? Nothing in comparison.
I get so angry hearing about Israel's right to defend itself, it can hardly be
called threatened with home-made fertilizer rockets and stone throwers.
It is a law of nature that for every action there is an equal & opposite reaction.
What will Israel reap from the terrorist destruction it is sowing?
Also what unnatural hold do the zionists have over American politicians? This is
all very suspicious, especially in view of the opinion that 9/11/01 was a joint
USA/mossad operation. What other false flag black ops do the Israelis hold over
the heads of USA government going all the way back to Eisenhower?
I couldn't help but say this, "Hello Rubyinthedust...purple words on a grey background"
But also, i do agree with you. I have thought there is information involved here which is obviously quite profound and damaging.
There must be an international investigation into Israel's use of white phosphorous against helpless civilians and the indiscriminate shelling of some UN buildings. By denying reporters access to Gaza, Israel is able to prevent the world from seeing the facts on the ground, while at the same time gladly showing international media the damage from Hamas rockets in the southern part of the country.
Look, the American munition manufacturers who make these disgusting devices needed some real live humans to test them out on.
So obviously they were going to give them to the Israelis because they knew that the Israelis have no scruples and will do anything to kill Palestinians even if it involves burning them to death!
Please don't expect good behavior from pathological religious fanatics and greedy, amoral manufacturers!
Do you know what the current ICON of America is? My blog has a surprise.

For those with short memories, the US was doing precisely this in Fallujah, so don't expect any criticism of this from that source.
Newsflash: Israel declares ceasefire with itself.
Prime Minister Olmert announced that Israeli guards had accomplished its stated objective of stopping the rocket fire from its Gazan prison minutes after another rocket was fired from inside its Gazan prison. No casualties were reported, but Israel stated that the intent of the rocket was to cause a holocaust, and estimated the planned casualties at 6 million. 5000 people are reported to have been treated for shock after watching the newscast.
Israel added that its Israeli guards could have destroyed their Gazan prisoners in a single swipe but were merciful, while insisting that if the Gazan prisoners also showed mercy and stopped terrorizing the Israeli guards, then the guards would consider giving them food and water every so often.
"To be humane is to be cruel, vicious and unrestrained, like humans.
To be inhumane is to be compassionate, restrained, moderate, like non humans."
Thank goodness some of this madness has ended!!!! Now let us hope that Hamas does likewise and both head for the negotiations table, and are open-minded about their options!
Just my suspicion, but the weapons that look like fireworks in the sky, the munitions that give off light that isn't a rocket plume as they speed through the sky, those give off light because they are either burning phosphorous or burning depleted uranium weapons. You can see these munitions being used against populated areas on American network TV. If the videos get removed from the networks' website, the same video feed might then be on the Al Jezeera website.
It's Geurnica every day in Gaza. Israel is happy to test "advanced" US weapons on an entire population, pure and simple. There's really no other explanation for the slaughter, because Hamas, while angry and vengeful, are no threat whatsoever to the much touted "right to exist" of Israel. Israel is in control, and it is the one that chose to pursue butchery at this level. This is cold, calculated murder, in pursuit of political ends, with no concern whatsoever for the civilian population of men, women, children and babies.
The Zionists are armed to the teeth, and always hungry for more methods for efficient killing, like DIME (Dense Inert Metal Explosives)...the bizarre (while also cruel and savage) weapon apparently being used against civilians in Gaza. Along with white phosphorous, this weapon is an indiscriminate killer, which causes cruelly savage wounds, along with slow, agonizing death. Victims of DIME sometimes take days to die...in agony.
The Pentagon has an insanely massive budget, with no constraints relative to reality, to do with as they please. God only knows what kind of nightmare weapons they're coming up with, apparently out of sheer boredom and of course, a need to spend taxpayers money on stupidly vicious shit. Weapons so cruel, and so mindless, as to make any upstanding weapon designer smile...along with his/her boss.
There were apparently directed energy weapons used in Iraq as well, Falluja if I recall correctly. Gotta wonder if the US is allowing Israel to use those as well? Hey, America is THE pre-eminent, full spectrum, "anti-personnel" (murder) weapons manufacturer. Israel is just a wannabe in that category. There's lots of other countries in the game as well, ready to stock the world up for depraved killing of all types.
Pretty soon wars will be fought by robots with tele-present human masters at game-style workstations, happily murdering civilians for bells and whistles...and promotions. Actually, now that I think of it, that would then allow the old men and women who make wars, to actually take part, without of course, the risk to life and limb. Just sit down at a workstation, and ice a few "bad guys" on your lunch break.
This world is only getting more hopelessly depraved with time...
Not out of boredom but to control the worlds resources and extract the most profit with the least payout, Read Naomi Klein's "Disaster Capitalism," and John Perkins "The Economic Hitmen" and get back to me about the boredom thesis, OK?
Don't forget cluster bombs and land mines, both illegal under international law yet still manufactured and deployed in great numbers by the US and Israel.

Have you heard Sir Gerald Kaufman addressing the British Parliment on Gaza ? This is historic - I've been waiting for this my whole life!

Thank god for Sir Gerald. Thank god, that all good men are not silent.
This means that now evil cannot flourish.
War crimes.....war crimes. So what? That is all I have heard in the last 8 years but there has been absolutely nothing done about it.
This stuff was used in Falluja too and what was said and done about it ........nothing.
"Three white phosphorus shells were fired at the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza City on Thursday, according to people there."
What is the point of having the UN? To fire upon them? What is the point of having Conventions, or whatever?
This whole situation is insanity.

What difference does it make
Israel own the western world it can and will do whatever it wants, and who dare stop or repromand her?
Thats the way it is
Notice the Zionist shills are gone now that the have done their job of spreading disinformation, they care about you, or I, or CD not all. Remember that the next time you see a SUDDEN influx of Zionist shills. Goodbye blutodog, Goose4 Step, steelgrey, ISRAELI, JoeHope, and other apologists for Israel's mass murder, we won't miss you at all.
Indeed: I remember reading elsewhere on CD that DHS has a multi-billion dollar program to spread disinformation within the blogosphere, so perhaps these shills were DHS funded, not just zionists? I might add that this DHS program has one other motive: To divide public opinion.

I won't speak for the others, but I'm not gone, Hootowl. I just tend to post on the more recent articles.
I challenge you to name any "disinformation" I have spread. I have backed up all my claims with evidence.
Hi Joe. I'll bite:
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/01/07-8
You said: Tony Blair ... once said ... that no two democracies have ever gone to war with each other.
While Blair may have said this prior to recent aggressions by Israel against the Gazans, your restatement of this during the conflict is disinformation.
Your response to being reminded of the elections in Gaza was Gaza is not a democracy.
Now that is blatantly untrue. Just because you, the US and Israel (all with agendas) do not recognize the democratic process held in Gaza does not make Gaza "not a democracy".
The same thread you also stated: American troops would never take part in a genocide and never have.. A wise CD-reader reminded you of the native-American genocide, and Americans engaged in genocide in the Philippines.
Another article: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/01/16-2
You said: Israel would never harm American citizens. NEVER.
Remember Rachel Corrie?
You said: ...the well-known fact that it was the Palestinians who were dancing in the streets on 911...
Here is an Israeli TV interview with 3 of the 5 MOSSAD agents that were arrested on 9/11 for celebrating the attack by dancing in a NYC street:
