UN Headquarters in Gaza Hit by Israeli 'White Phosphorus' Shells
JERUSALEM - The main UN compound in Gaza was left in flames today after being struck by Israeli artillery fire, and a spokesman said that the building had been hit by shells containing the incendiary agent white phosphorus.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has told visiting UN chief Ban Ki-moon that Israeli troops had shelled a UN compound in Gaza in response to fire coming from the building. (AFP/Mahmud Hams) The attack on the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) came as Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary-General, arrived in Israel on a peace mission and plunged Israel's relations with the world body to a new low.
Mr Ban expressed his "strong protest and outrage" at the shelling and demanded an investigation, only to be told by apologetic Israeli leaders that their forces had been returning fire from within the UN compound.
"The Israeli forces were attacked from there and their response was severe," Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister, told the UN chief, according to a statement released by his office.
"We do not want such incidents to take place and I am sorry for it but I don't know if you know, but Hamas fired from the UNRWA site. This is a sad incident and I apologise for it."
UNWRA, which looks after around four million Palestinian refugees in the region, suspended its operations in Gaza after the attack, in which three of its employees were injured.
Chris Gunness, a UNRWA spokesman, said that the building had been used to shelter hundreds of people fleeing Israel's 20-day offensive in Gaza. He said that pallets with supplies desperately needed by Palestinians in Gaza were on fire.
"What more stark symbolism do you need?" he said. "You can't put out white phosphorus with traditional methods such as fire extinguishers. You need sand, we don't have sand."
The Israeli military has denied using white phosphorus shells in the Gaza offensive, although an investigation by The Times has revealed that dozens of Palestinians in Gaza have sustained serious injuries from the substance, which burns at extremely high temperatures.
The Geneva Convention of 1980 proscribes the use of white phosphorus as a weapon of war in civilian areas, although it can be used to create a smokescreen. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said today that all weapons used in Gaza were "within the scope of international law".
The attack on the UN compound came as Israeli forces pushed deeper into Gaza City and unleashed their heaviest shelling on its crowded neighbourhoods in three weeks of war. At least 15 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli attacks, medical officials said, pushing the death toll up towards 1,100 - a level that Mr Ban described as "unbearable".
It was not clear whether the escalation signalled a new phase in the conflict. Israel has held back from all-out urban warfare in the narrow alleyways of Gaza's cities, where Hamas militants are more familiar with the lay of the land.
Black smoke billowed over Gaza City, terrifying civilians who said that they had "nowhere left to hide" from the relentless shelling.
"I am telling you that Gaza is on fire, everything is under attack. We cannot begin to answer all the calls for help, it is desperate. We cannot reach the people, everyone is trapped and we do not know how to help them," said Doctor Moussa El Haddad at Shifa Hospital.
Maha El-Sheiky, 36, said that she fled her home in the western suburbs of Gaza City two days ago, moving her family into a school in the centre of the city. "We thought it would be safer here. But now there is shelling everywhere. It is schools and mosques and hospitals. We don't know what will be next," she said. "We are hiding, it is in God's hands."
There were reports that the al-Quds hospital in the Tal El Hawa district, Gaza's second-largest, had been shelled, while more than 500 patients were being treated inside.
An explosion also blasted a tower block that houses the offices of Reuters and several other media organisations, injuring a journalist working for the Abu Dhabi television channel.
Reuters journalists working at the time said it appeared that the southern side of the 13th floor of the Al-Shurouq Tower in the city centre had been struck by an Israeli missile or shell. Reuters evacuated its bureau.
Several organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and Human Rights Watch, said that they were "certain" that Israel was using white phosphorus shells in Gaza. Human rights workers said that the use of phosphorus in the densely populated Gaza City could constitute a war crime.
Israel launched the offensive on December 27 in an effort to stop militant rocket fire from Gaza that has terrorised hundreds of thousands of Israelis. It says that it will press ahead until it receives guarantees of a complete halt to rocket fire and an end to weapons smuggling into Gaza from neighbouring Egypt.
The attack on the UN compound prompted international protests.
Lord Malloch-Brown, the Foreign Office Minister, said that there was "absolutely no excuse" for the shelling, which, he said, reminded him of a similar attack on a UN observation post during the Israeli offensive into Lebanon in 2006.
He told peers: "With over 1,000 people now dead in Gaza, many of them civilians and children, the urgent need for a diplomatic solution is clear. A robust and immediate ceasefire is the only way the current situation in Gaza can be addressed."
William Hague, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, said: "The shelling of the UN Headquarters in Gaza is unacceptable. This undercuts efforts to bring relief to the people of Gaza and is against Israel's own interests. The UNWRA provides food and aid to over a million Palestinian refugees in Gaza.
"The suspension of its operations will bring more misery to civilians. We desperately need a ceasefire by both sides, not further escalation. Both sides must meet their obligations to protect aid workers at all times."
The conflict was also discussed at talks between Gordon Brown and Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, in Berlin. Aides said that Mr Brown was expected to speak to Mr Ban later today.

Show AllIs there no bottom to Israel's violence against civilians? People say that Hamas hides behind civilians as "human shields". I'll grant this may be true. But what would Israel do if Hamas was hiding somewhere in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem? Would they kill their own civilians? There is no excuse for what they are doing to Gaza, unless you consider racism to be an excuse.

Actually, the only fire coming from the building occured after the IDF shelled it with illegal weapons. These days I expect the Israelis and their genocidal supporters to always tell the Big Lie.
Israel has been killing UN peacekeepers and even high ranking diplomats with impunity from its very beginning 60 years ago.
Civilians taking refuge in UN compounds are shown no mercy either.
It's a shame that the Jewish people have government somewhat like the United States at this time. They are getting away with crimes against humanity just as we have in the name of "terrorism" and the people go for the "OKEEDOKE" because they are promised security not realizing that they are just exacerbating the problem.

I have been making political protest art for several years, altho an artist a long time. I have made "Shame on the US and Israel" art a few years ago,more than one, and agree with calling "shame" on governments, ours, the US government, and the Israeli government.
When the US military used white phosphorus in Fallujah, I made protest art. Now, I have made protest art linking Fallujah and Gaza, before the news of the white phosphorus in Gaza.
Like you, "it's breaking my heart". I wrote my member of the House of Rep., and told him that I'd just sent a thank you to both Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Rep. Maxine Waters. My Congressmember was NOT one of the "NO" votes for the nonbinding resolution last week in support of Israel, not urging a ceasefire. I have been writing my Congressmember for years and told him that if he voted for the bailout, he'd not see my vote for him again. And sending my peace/protest art. I kept my word in the last election. (He was in no danger of losing his seat. I hope there's a contender for his seat in the next Dem.primary.)
Whatever way we can work for peace will help.

We heard resoundingly from our elected Congress last week with no dissent from Obama. Congress voted overwhelmingly to support the Israeli terror campaign ostensibly against Hamas. It was really against the Palestinians who had the temerity to democratically elect who they desired to lead them.
At least they can support Hamas actions - our democratically elected officials just ignore their constituencies.
Everyone keeps asking for statements. The vote last week was pretty convincing. The U.S. - US support and encourage state-sponsored terrorism against unarmed civilian populations using inhumane and illegal weapons - WP for example. We support killing innocents in what the innocents considered sanctuaries.
We elected these officials so they are our employees and whatever they do IS IN OUR NAME. Nobody else put them in office. They are doing nothing to stop the murders. That technically makes us culpable as their employers(we do pay them and even gave them a raise this year for a job welldone -IN OUR NAME.
But I could be wrong !

I am Christian and also a Jew by birth. To me, supporting Israel is just a matter of doing the right thing. It doesn't matter if you are Jew or gentile. If you are confused why Israel is so important to the Jewish people, I recommend reading rabbi Harold S. Kushner's "To Life: A Celebration of Jewish Being and Thinking". Kushner shares my support for Israel. He talks about such topics as the love of Israel by Jews, how Jews and Christians need to understand one another. This book was actually recommended to me by another poster here on CD, and I've found it quite helpful in answering some questions I've had, like "who is a Jew"? and "are Jews a people?".
Although keep in mind that Kushner is a rabbi from Judaism's Conservative movement, so the perspective you're getting is largely from his take on Jewish observance and belief, though he does make efforts to show you the Reform and Orthodox perspectives as well.
I don't think you have considered the unique challenges faced by Israel. Hamas is not a progressive non-violent revolutionary movement. Since their founding, their motive hasn't changed, they wish to destroy Israel through the use of terrorism. There is no disputing that the destruction of Zionism is their goal. They will not recognize Israel's right to exist. On the other hand, Israel recognizes not only the Palestinian's right to exist, but their right to sovereignty. That is why they are willing to support the peace process and a two-state solution. However, they have made but one demand that is non-negotiable, and that is that Hamas cease their campaign of terror against the people of Israel. Yet Hamas refuses.
For 8 long years they have been endlessly raining down bombs on Israel, breaking ceasefire after ceasefire. The psychological impact of living in this kind of environment cannot be understated. A whole generation of Israeli schoolchildren are being educated in bomb shelters. Mother's and father's fear their sons will be sent to die in Gaza.
Some argue that because Hamas uses inaccurate rockets that diminishes the insidiousness of their crimes. I would argue the exact opposite. Intent is important. Hamas's intent is to randomly butcher as many civilians as possible. Israel is trying to save civilians from getting caught in the crossfire.
If a policeman accidentally kills your child while trying to save the lives of many people, that is tragic, but we understand that their intent was to do the right thing. If a madman poisoned the water supply and killed thousands of people, their intent was murder. Their is a huge difference between these two analogies. Israel is one of the most powerful military powers on the planet. They could kill every last Palestinian if they wanted to. They could have done that years ago.
But instead, they use surgical strikes and smart bombs to try to minimize civilian casualties. If Hamas had an army as strong as Israel's, then every last man, woman, and child in Israel would be dead. The challenge that Israel faces is that if the don't deal with Hamas, then what happens down the road? What happens if Iran or Syria supplies Hamas with more powerful weapons? Hamas is just waiting for the chance to make their own 911 is Israel. Should Israel do nothing?
Hamas is like cancer, and if you just ignore it, it will kill you.

Nonsense...reality matters...not intent. You dont bomb entire populations because of someones intent. If it was intent that mattered then we would have a worldwide nuclear war to offset the aggressive tendencies of those trying to monopolize power and resources. In WWII if some Greek or French person killed a Nazi, they would come back and kill 200 or perhaps kill a villages children to make a statement and "deter" future insurrection. This is what Israel is doing on a mass scale. They are no different than Nazis or other past war mongers.

The fact that there is absolutely no outrage as to the Israeli massacre in the US media shows how powerful AIPAC and those who control the media and the advertising revenue it depends on are.

Olbermann and Maddow toe the line. That's why they remain on air. Liberals are acceptable as long as they remain uncritical of Israel. Once they criticize Israel, they are persona non grata. This even applies to ex-presidents.
In fact, this is almost a rule of thumb for Western media which demonizes anyone critical of Israel. For example, Chavez would have much better press if he didn't speak out in support of Palestinian rights. His revolutionary ideals would be much more positively protrayed if he had simply ignored the issue. Amazing really.

Chavez has been criticized by the media long before he started hanging out with Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
The reason the Western Media has sided with Israel over Hamas is b/c Hamas has committed crimes that are to our standards much greater than the crimes Israel has committed.
To be clear, neither side is a white knight but the thousands of rockets Hamas has fired at Israeli civilians are a greater crime than the actions of Israel. Death toll be damned. The Western world is governed by a principal of intent. Hamas intends to kill civilians while Israel for all its flaws still intends to kill militants. Militants are legitimate targets while civilians aren't.
Even though Israel has killed more Palestinian civilians than Hamas has killed Israeli civilians the Western World holds Hamas as the instigator. In war, proportionality has no meaning for the intent is to win and you win a war by killing the enemy to the point where they either surrender or they are all killed.

I think there are more Jewish folks and organizations condemning Israel and bringing up these War Crimes than mainstream and Christian organizations in the USA.
Britain is rethinking "War on Terrorism" policy as counter productive now too.
This is a big change happening.
I think most Jews in the world know about these crimes but tend to be silent just as most people in the world tend to be silent about opposing War for fear of being criticized or losing jobs and being called supporters of the Enemy.

Maybe. But not in the U.S. and not in Israel, where Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud Party are leading in the polls heading into next month's election (I heard in one report 80%). As a reminder: Netanyahu thinks the current occupation and assault are not going anywhere near far enough.
Israel will not be satisfied until they have completely absorbed Gaza and the West Bank into Greater Israel and secured every single water source, including the Jordan River. Hand-in-hand with this goal is that every Palestinian still alive resides somewhere else: Jordan, Syria, or Egypt. (And at this point I wouldn't bet too much money on the long-term survival possibilities for Lebanon once these first two goals are reached.)
I was re-reading Herbert Samuel's "An Interim Report on the Civil Administration of Palestine during the period 1 July 1920 to 30 June 1921"; Samuel was the High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief of the British occupying force.

The UN warehouse that Israel set afire had tons of food and medical supplies intended for the desperate Gazans. Obviously Israel is not hunting for a few rocket launchers but is systematically destroying an entire population of Palestinians. This is genocide. There is no other term for it and Israel must be prosecuted.
But who will hold them accountable? Not the US, they are the enablers and should likewise be prosecuted. So where will justice be found as we watch this dreadful and shocking spectacle?

Rafael Lemkin coined the term genocide. He was a Polish Jew who fought against the Nazi's while in the Polish army. He managed to escape the Nazi's and lived in the US but lost 49 relatives in the concentration camps.
His original definition of genocide was "an organized attempt to deliberately and systematically destroy, in whole or in part, an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group." The term has evolved to mean the killing of a particular group, but Lemkin and others have maintained that genocide is any attempt to destroy a particular group's identity, it's social structure and it's way of life. Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians, there is no other term for their criminal actions.

The article states that three UNWRA employees were injured.
If fire had come from the UNWRA compound, then it must have been with the knowledge of UNWRA, as we know that UNWRA employees were present in the compound.
Israel will spin this in one of several ways:
1) Hamas was using UNWRA employees as shields;
2) The UN is complicit with Hamas in the attacks on Israel.
I like rebelnow's comment that the UNWRA warehouse contained food and medical supplies (can we get confirmation of this?). If true, then this attack is a clear indication that the IDF is systematically attacking the civilian population, and not military facilities.
The food, water, and medical supplies stored at the UN compound have been confirmed by CBC, BBC and other news agencies.
Attacking a marked and well known UN location is a violation of the Geneva conventions similar to attacking a hospital (which Israel has also done BTW).
As a signatory to the UN (which Israel has been harping about), it's leaders are now subject to arrest and trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity if they ever travel.

Well, I'm glad that somewhere in the distant past some of my ancestors stopped being Jews and converted to Christianity; I'm an Atheist, so sometimes things do work out. At least I don't have to feel guilty about being a Jew and not pro-Israel, unlike some of my friends.
My family has always been pro-Israel, but that feeling has been waning for quite a few years. Israel doesn't deserve support of any kind, until it is willing to meet it's international obligations (various UN-charters and resolutions) and is willing to be treated like any other (non-US) nation. The land of Israel/Palestine was given to Jews from all over the world by people who didn't own it, at the expense of the people who lived there. One might call that theft and I know it's not PC!! But we have to face the facts here, and I think Israel has been in the wrong from day one. Read the history and various remarks by various politicians: they knew they were stealing the land and that the Palestinians were a nuisance they had to get rid of. In Gaza you can see one of the ways that can be done.

I work at not equating the behavior of the Israeli government with being a Jew, just as I am angry at the US government, (I am a US citizen) for its enabling Israel's government in this horrific attack on Gaza. I am more connected to the United States than I am to Israel. I am an older woman. There are things we can do with our pain and anger, even if its small ways. I don't know your country, but you know what I mean. I have sent a thank you note to both Dennis Kucinich and Maxine Waters. I have made protest art and sent out many, stuffing envelopes as can. It makes me feel a little less powerless.
It is how I have felt about being an American during the Vietnam and now during the Iraq wars and the siege of Gaza. Or when we provided critical help to overthrow governments in Congo, or Chile or Haiti etc. etc. Or sometimes I have felt that way about being white. It can drive you crazy.
You cannot help the circumstances of your birth, good or bad. Don't be ashamed. Just live by what is best in you.
I was on a vigil / protest about Gaza last Wednesday evening. I would say the majority of white Americans there were Jewish. There were far too few people of any type, but Jews were better than others.

I came upon one, accidentally, twice:once in re Lebanon when Israel attacked and joined, and once, in re Iraq, and joined. Took photos at each and used them in art. Within last two-three years.
During the Vietnam war (or the American war on Vietnam), in the early 1960s, I was against the war, going to protests and ambivalent about saying anything to my students, so I didn't. I often wonder if I was wrong to keep quiet inside the school.
Things will get more even more barbaric in Gaza. Why?
