Israeli Ground Troops Enter Gaza
JERUSALEM - Israeli troops began moving into Gaza on Saturday night, Israel Defense Forces said.
"We have just a short while ago launched the second stage of the operation against Hamas infrastructure," IDF spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich told CNN.
An Israeli Arab girl with the Palestinian flag painted on her face joins thousands of Israeli Arabs protesting against Israel's military operation in Gaza in the northern Israeli town of Sakhnin, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009. (Anja Niedringhaus / AP) Earlier, the Israelis used ground artillery for the first time in the eight-day-old conflict when Israeli tanks fired shells into Gaza from the northern and eastern borders.
Troops had been massed along the border since the IDF began its bombardment of the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory December 27.
Leaflets signed by the commander of the Israeli military were dropped over northern Gaza on Saturday morning, warning residents to "leave the area immediately" to ensure their safety.
"Due to the terrorist actions undertaken by terrorist elements from the region of your residences against the state of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces are compelled to respond immediately in the region of your residences. For your safety, you are ordered to leave the area immediately," the leaflets said.
The geographic area covered by the word "region" was not defined.
Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal promised bloodshed if Israeli ground troops enter Gaza.
"As for you, the soldiers of the enemy whose leadership are getting you ready to enter Gaza in a ground attack, you need to know that doom will await you and you will be killed, injured and captured," Meshaal, speaking in Syria, said on the Al Jazeera television network Friday.
"If the enemy got into Gaza, our people will fight from one street to the next, from one house to the other, and on every inch of the land."
An Israeli airstrike hit a mosque in the northern Gaza village of Beit Lahiya on Saturday evening, killing 13 people and wounding 60, according to Palestinian medical sources.
An Israeli attack earlier Saturday killed Azkariah al-Jamal, the commander of Gaza City's rocket-launching squads, Palestinian and IDF sources said.
Another airstrike killed two Hamas militants in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, Palestinian officials said.
Leibovich said Hamas militants had launched 20 rockets from Gaza into Israel by late afternoon Saturday.
Rockets set a house on fire in Ashkelon, damaged a kibbutz dining hall and slightly wounded two people in an eight-story building in Ashdod, according to Israeli ambulance services.
"We still see that Hamas is targeting Israeli civilians. Namely, we still did not reach the goal of crippling Hamas' launching capabilities," Leibovitch said.
"We still have many more targets to go," she added.
An IDF statement said Israeli missiles fired from jets and ships hit 25 Hamas "outposts, training camps and rocket launching sites" Saturday morning.
The houses of two alleged Hamas terror operatives were also hit, the IDF said.
One, it said, was the home of Azadin Hadad, described as the head of the Hamas military group in eastern Gaza City.
The other, in Beit Lahiya, was used to store rocket-launching equipment and was the home of Ismail Renam, who "has a central role in the launching of Grad-type rockets against Israel," the IDF said.
Grad-type rockets have a longer range than the rudimentary Qassam rockets Hamas more commonly uses.
Israeli officials say four people have been killed and 59 wounded in Hamas rocket attacks in the past week.
Palestinian medical sources said Saturday that at least 435 people have been killed and 2,285 wounded in Gaza.

Show AllPlease, world, rise up against this evil country and save the lives of Palestinians. Regardless of where you stand on a 1 or 2 state solution, Israel has to be stopped. I wish I could be there, I'd risk my life to try to protect the occupied.
Even if they succeed in getting rid of Hamas, other groups will rise up in their stead. Why is this happening? Why isn't our government condemning it & withdrawing all support for this terrorist nation??
"Why isn't our government condemning it & withdrawing all support for this terrorist nation??"
You aren't seriously asking that are you? Look at the composition of our own government in the U.S. and weep for the butchered innocents of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. Only international action from the U.N. could possibly stop the butchering of the trapped people of Gaza, unfortunately I am not holding my breath that the U.N. will do that considering the . U.S. veto power it has already utilized on the Security Council.
Why isn't our government condemning it & withdrawing all support for this terrorist nation??

2) Thou shall revere the holocaust with all thy heart
3) Thou shall have no doubt in your heart of the number 6 million
4) Thou shall not compare the unique suffering of the Jews with any other
5) Thou shall honour Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state
6) Thou shall adore the “sinless” Israel, regardless of allegations of sins
7) Thou shall believe that Israel has the right to defend itself and protect its security by all means (but not Muslims)
8 ) Thou shall not kill (except Muslims)
9) Thou shall not lie (except about Muslim’s WMD)

And there is a bonus eleventh commandment:
11) Thou shall sacrifice as many humans as humanly possible (specially those who dare to say NO) on the alter of greed and security of the Jewish state
'I'd risk my life to try to protect the occupied.'
well if you can't risk your life this moment, how about donating some funds to support internationalists who are in palestine helping the palestinian people today and raising consciousness in their communities of the plight of the palestinian people after they return home to their respective countries.

"International Human Rights Activists now working with medical teams in northern Gaza as Israel launches invasion of Gaza Strip, January 3rd, 2009
7:30pm, 3rd January 2009, Gaza: European, Australian and American Human Rights Activists are now based in northern Gaza as Israel has intensified shelling in what appears to be the beginning of a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
They will be accompanying ambulances and medical teams in the Jabaliya, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun areas while working from the Northern Station of the Red Crescent in Jabaliya.
“Pieces of 10cm shrapnel are now flying into the Red Crescent Station. Ambulance crews cannot make it to injured people due to the massive Israeli shelling of the area” Alberto Arce (Spain) - International Solidarity Movement
“The ambulance crews have requested international assistance and so we will be working from the Red Crescent Northern Station in doing that. We have been working with the medics for the last three days and are first aid trained.” Sharon Lock (Australia) - International Solidarity Movement
Other International Human Rights Activists are now based in Rafah and Gaza City.
International Human Rights Activists have been accompanying ambulances in the Gaza Strip since the murder of medic Mohammed Abu Hassera and Doctor Ihab Al Mathoon by Israeli missiles on the 31st December 2008.
Human Rights Activists now in Gaza:
Alberto Arce - Spain
Ewa Jasiewicz - Poland/Britain
Dr. Haider Eid - South Africa
Sharon Lock - Australia
Fida Qishta - Palestine
Jenny Linnel - Britain
Natalie Abu Shakra - Lebanon
Vittorio Arrigoni - Italy
Eva Bartlett - Canada"
...peace...
Mmmmm. Not a single American in your list of human-rights activists in Gaza. An oversight, or something more telling about Americans?
Who will STOP Israel from butchering trapped people? Is there any way for citizens to contact the U.N. and demand an immediate U.N. peace keeper occupation of Israel?
I continue to ask the Zionist shills what is Israel's border? Is that really that difficult a question that it need take many hours to answer? That in itself is telling of the expansionist agenda of Israel and her supporters.
I think Israel wants to stir the hornet's nest as much as possible so that Obama wiil be powerless to quell the hatred of the Muslim world even if he should try to stand up to Israel's aggression.
Kill them all. God will sort them out.
I work and socialize with very intelligent well educated Jewish people yet they are all passionate about the glory of Isreal. I notice there's been an increase in Holocaust survivors visiting schools. It takes a very brave person to criticize Isreal these days. The Canadian media (All major newspapers except the Toronto Star) is owned by the Asper family who are Zionists. There was no coverage of the first 2 days of the bombing. Then yesterday there was an article about how it's all up to Hamas and their incompetent evil leaders to finally stop bullying Isreal. I can't imagine how Canadian Palestinians can stand it. But their letters to the editor won't get published and either does mine. I wonder if this is the kind of silence that went on while racist or homophobic policies were being created in our past. How to break the stranglehold of the media that shapes public opinion with such biased information?
Yeah, it's a case of where the former victims are lookng more like their former tormentors every day.
Actually, there are so many excellent Jewish therapists out there that they probably ought to give them all some free therapy lessons. Freud would have had a field day with the Israelis.

PLEASE SPREAD WIDELY
How can anybody live in that whole entire area anymore, Jews or Palestinians? I know there's a lot of Jews that don't support what their Government is doing to the Palestinians. Maybe they feel as helpless as we Americans, who are, and always have been against the invasion of Iraq by our Government.
I know that Obama has a big mess ahead of him. I really hope he tries to help put an end to this conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. Our Government needs to quit supporting everything the Israelis do. That makes us just as guilty as they are. If Obama doesn't do something to help the Palestinians, he will loose my support in the next election.
Not going to happen: Google Hilary Clinton, Rahm Emmanuel, and Joesph Biden and AIPAC and then get back to me.
there can be no more denial. this has now proof that the zionists bought and paid for our government. we are complicit in this ethnic cleansing of the palestinians. all the lies, and disinformation by the zionists can no longer hide their crimes.
I like how Tim Butcher (fitting name) sees fit to give us the details of the damage caused by one of Hamas's rockets to the dining hall of a kibbutz (that ever so idealistic institution of Zionist collectivism) and even chooses to quote an Israeli source as to how Hamas is "targeting civilians" with these pinpoint-accurate papier-maché weapons. It's only one more step to say that the Gazans are dying en masse as a propaganda ploy, to undercut the sensitive Israelis' attempts to avoid civilian casualties.
I doubt even Orwell could have imagined it could get this bad.
For something closer to the truth, see Israeli scholar Ilan Pappe on the ideology behind the current slaughter at: http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10100.shtml. Or Jennifer Loewenstein at: http://www.counterpunch.com/loewenstein01012009.html.
Racism and racial hatred cannot be confined to convenient categories and opposed selectively. It is all one process and always serves to divide, divert, disrupt and defeat the people and their movements. The attack on Gaza has stirred up a hornets nest of racism and hatred that dominates the mass media comment lines and talk radio. Bigots who no longer dare put into print their hatred for Americans of color feel perfectly free to call for the extermination of "Arabs" and Muslims. Those who would oppose them keep silent for fear of being branded "anti-Semites". It is so twisted.
The mass media talks about demonstrations all around the world but won't mention the demonstrations taking place in the US. They feel free to put all kinds of statements into the mouth of "Hamas" and demonize them while not printing what they actually say. They feel free to talk about this situation as though it started with missiles being fired into Israel from Gaza without ever talking about the context - in particular the fact that the people of Gaza are being strangled, and are starting to die of malnutrition and disease, in a siege and selective murder campaign that has been developing for years and is becoming acute.
Many liberals and self-styled progressives conveniently buy into the mainstream media "double-think", or imagine they can ignore this issue and avoid nasty confrontations with the supporters of Israeli aggression. They imagine that in this way they can build broader alliances to deal with "more important" issues. They need to know that the officially-sanctioned massive anti-Arab, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian bias and the mass hatred it is enabling is a deadly snake in our midst, one which will bite us where we sit if we fail to recognize and confront it.
Similarly, unity with all working people everywhere is not just a tactic or a strategy, it is a basic organizing principle for building peoples' movements. It is the flip side of opposing all racism everywhere. Like racism, it doesn't work if we think we can flip it on or off depending on the situation. Some progressives seem to imagine we can support working people in this struggle because we like their union, but not in that one because their union leaders are misguided, we can support the common people of one country because they have leftist leaders but not those of another country because their leaders are reactionary or making bad choices. Like racism, that perspective leaves us helpless before the ruling class' strategy of divide and conquor. It denies us our most fundamental weapon, unity, and leaves us defenseless against their most potent weapons: racism and war hysteria.
We do not get to choose whether the people of Gaza are led by Hamas; we must defend them with our whole hearts, whether we like that fact or not. Nor can we let our feelings about Hamas stop us from seeking out, listening to and carefully considering what their leaders who are in Hamas say, because at this moment in history, whether they are clear or confused, they are channeling the voice of the people of Gaza who are locked in a mortal struggle.
Unity and anti-racism; these two principles must define the core of who we are as progressives, and both demand that we speak out to defend the people of Gaza, for our own sake as well as for theirs.

Israel Lobby paper.
Its more than just palestinians or muslims. Israel has killed non-arabs too.
Israel's motto is only jews have a right to self defense, a right to suffer, a right to return, if you criticize it you hate jews, if you are a jew and you criticize it you hate yourself.
Israel uses women as the PR face for its military and it uses western raised people like Mark Regev(how often you hear Israeli people who have western accents?).
The Palestinians should try using 2 year olds, but chances are Israel and the media would compare them to Hitler.
Its beyond absurd, as Mark Steel's article in the Independent pointed out.
GNR lyrics to Chinese Democracy adjusted for the current situation in Palestine:
Israeli "Democracy" lyrics (dedicated to the Zionist murders)
It don't really matter
Gonna find out for yourself
No it don't really matter
Gonna leave this thing to
Somebody else
I know that I'm a classic case
Watch my disenchanted face
Blame it on Palestine
They've seen the end
And they can't hold on now
Cause it would take a lot more
hate than you
To end the fascination
Even with an iron fist
All they got to rule the nation
But all I got is precious time
It don't really matter
Guess I'll keep it to myself
Said it don't really matter
It's time I look around for
Somebody else
Cause it would take a lot more time than you
Have got more masturbation
Even with your iron fist
More than you got to rule the nation
When all we've got is precious time
More than you've got to fool the nation
But all I got is precious time
[SOLO]
It don't really matter
I guess you'll find out for yourself
No it don't really matter (matter)
So you can hear it now from
Somebody else
You think you got it all locked up inside
And if you beat 'em up they'll die
It's like a walk in the park for the cells
now you're keepin' your own cane in hell
And when your brain won't rot, blame yourself
As if you play with their mind you can tell
And your out of time Israel!

"Bury My Heart At Wounded-knee". Renegades in Gaza are just like Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Geronimo. Dirty coyotes think their land belongs to them. Humph! Haw! And US/Israel won't be satisfied until the Palestinians are all dead, or crowded into squalid reservations, er,that is, refugee camps...out of sight, out of mind.
I prefer 'concentration camps'.
Yes, the Israeli-Nazis are on the move again, this time with tanks and artillery as well as the F-16s and Apache helicopters and warships.
They dropped leaflets telling the Gazians to flee. But they are under Israeli siege. Is this Israel-Nazis humor?
There is no humor in what is happening to the 1.5 million people in Gaza and there is little humor in how the MSM is so biased in reporting the carnage.
WW3 is underway. The dominoes are falling. Make the most of each day while you can.
www.dangerouscreation.com
Are you serious?
Leaflets telling them to flee?
Reminds me of what happened to Amy Goodman at the RNC convention where the police pinned people inside a circle, told them to 'leave or be arrested' and then arrested everyone because no one 'left'....of course, the mere act of attempting to cross the police line was sufficient to get you knocked down and a good kicking.
Sounds like the same tactic muliplied by a thousand.
Flee?
Flee where exactly? Flee how exactly?
How can they flee when there are checkpoints? Its not like they can flee to Allenby Bridge (Jordan) or Rafa (Egypt) as these areas are also blocked off!
The only other way out is the sea. You don't suppose Israel had that in mind, do you?
google jinsa read who their members are ando who their board of directors are. most interesting read their statement on 09/13/01 two days after the WTC.
"We still see that Hamas is targeting Israeli civilians. Namely, we still did not reach the goal of crippling Hamas' launching capabilities," Leibovitch said.
This is a pretty absurd statement considering the Hamas rockets have no guidance systems. How can Hamas target anyone with their crude rockets? The rockets are fired hap hazard unlike the Israeli's with their sophisticated weaponry and yet the Israeli's seem to kill more innocent people then Hamas or Hezbollah when they attacked Lebanon? They must have the most inept army in the world with their record of innocent people killed.
"The rockets are fired hap hazard unlike the Israeli's with their sophisticated weaponry and yet the Israeli's seem to kill more innocent people then Hamas or Hezbollah when they attacked Lebanon? They must have the most inept army in the world with their record of innocent people killed."
Assuming that they aren't targeting innocent people.

Posters query? Why not more? Why no resistance from American politicians? In an era of high-technology, is it really 'conspiracy theory' to think pelosi, maybe reid, several in congress are black-mailed? I read a GREAT post on CD illuminating this potential, some nonsense called 'amdoc' and back doors. I'm dumb but I play chess, and this is taking the queen off the board early.
Azjoe because your beloved Dimocraps are bought and sold by AIPAC it's not a conspiracy it's done right out in the open for everyone to see. It's exactly this sort of thing that causes many of us to admire McKiney and Nader who aren't for sale to the highest bidder.
Amazing, but typical of israel. the israeli military has decided not to let foreign journalist in Gaza despite a court order to allow a limited number for journalist to report the slaughter. You can track the butchering on antiwar.com. But the real good news (reuters)is that a number of IDF soldiers have been killed in norther Gaza. For all you map lovers, the Gaza is a tad less than 30 miles long and averages about 5 miles wide. Israel is about the size of New Jersey.
At what point, US citizens, do we realize our government DOES NOT represent us, and WITHDRAW our support and begin resistance to what our government does in our name? (As proposed by Thoreau in his pamphlet "On Civil Disobedience" about his refusal to pay taxes for the US war against Mexico, briefly jailed for his withdrawal of support.)
Withdraw support: For example:
Stop paying taxes;
Stop purchasing ANYTHING that we do not actually NEED;
Stop voting for ANYONE who does not speak plainly about these matters.
Begin resistance: For example:
Talk to our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and families;
Work with people we know to organize:
Find local places where our REPRESENTATIVES carry out their work, and blockade their workplaces;
Find local places where our military ships weapons out of the country, and blockade these transshipment points;
Find local places where corporations manufacture or administer the manufacture of arms, and blockade these workplaces;
All the while, produce our own media to reach out to other citizens with our reasons and our goals, in our own terms.
OK, if you do NOT think our country and our world are at the point of demanding principled resistance by citizens who put their own lives on the line - what do you propose to do?
I'm up for a general strike for peace how would one go about organizing such a thing?
Well, that's a great question. i remember there was some promotion here on CD of the idea of a US general strike last September 11. i don't recall hearing any reports of anyone actually trying to get a strike started.
i think the way to start is to start talking to people, and organizing smaller things in our own communities. Building a large movement of people who recognize and begin to exercise our own power probably shouldn't start as a full-leap to a mass action involving coordination and commitment among millions of people. We need to start by talking to each other, and taking action in our own communities.
That said, it is also true that we can never tell where our actions might lead, so i don't want to say someone shouldn't start with a big idea. Who knows what might lead to major movements? So a small group starting a strike might build into something larger.
i think people taking stands and taking action need to be realistic. AND, i also think people need to be audacious. At some point, after thinking and talking, and trying to imagine how a small action COULD grow into something larger, including thinking carefully about the message that will be promoted along with the action, i encourage US citizens to take stands against our government's actions in the world.
i know lots of people are currently working hard to build movements for change. i would love to hear other people's thoughts about how to get (non-political-party based) movements for genuine change in the US to grow into real challenges to the existing power structure.
And if we are NOT currently organizing with people in our own communities, i would encourage everyone to try to find someone to talk to about how to get started.
how would one go about organizing such a thing?
look to the past and examine the conditions and tactics used by the activists.
http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/hist_texts/seattle1919.html
{"From February 6 to February 11, 1919, nearly 100,000 Seattle workers participated in a general strike. This pamphlet is a history of the strike, written by the History Committee of the General Strike Committee shortly after the end of the strike. It was compiled by Anna Louise Strong....
We are reprinting it for several reasons. First, it provides a concrete account of one of the few general strikes in this country's history. Although conditions have changed considerably, it still gives a good idea of what happens during a general strike and what problems arise. Second, the Seattle general strike was the general strike in the USA that went farthest towards workers' management, both in concept and in practice. It was seen, by both participants and opponents, as part of a process through which workers were preparing themselves to run industry and society. Final authority in running the strike rested with a General Strike Committee, three members from each striking local, elected by the rank-and-file. The 300 members of the committee were mostly rank-and-filers with little previous leadership experience. During the strike, this committee or its Executive Committee of 15 virtually ran Seattle. The strike was not a simple shutdown of the city. Instead, workers in different trades organized themselves to provide essential services, such as doing hospital laundry, getting milk to babies, collecting wet garbage, and many other things."}
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_General_Strike_of_1919
{"Most unions in Seattle were officially affiliated with the AFL, but the ideas of ordinary workers tended to be more radical. A local labor leader from the time discussed the politics of Seattle's workers in June 1919:
I believe that 95 percent of us agree that the workers should control the industries. Nearly all of us agree on that but very strenuously disagree on the method. Some of us think we can get control through the Cooperative movement, some of us think through political action, and others think through industrial action."}
...peace...
Good post with some important history. i was banned previously from here for using the words "general strike" I am glad CD staff has come to see censorship is not the way.

Okay. differences aside. I live on the West Coast. I'll meet activists in SF, Sac or LA...it would be so egregious to wait 3-4 years and only then hit the streets. Though I support Barack, the left needs to 'prod' him.
Peace in Palestine.
I've lived in San Francisco and Humboldt but stuck in the midwest now. At least Ann Arbor is the next town over... I suspect that something will happen here in the next couple of days.
hootowl,
Great to hear from you, only a few of us form the core of CD posters, ergo it means even more when we find a common frequency.....though minoritized via my Barack support, I try to weather the storm and dialogue....
all my respect, azjoe
Re: Global General Strike
Stay at home (if You have one) don't go out. Don't buy anything unless
Your survival requires it. Use Your phone to tell the people You know
quickly. The internet might be too slow and already manipulated. As far
as I know, there's not yet a law against staying home. Of course You will
have to put Your Life at risk. You will have to overcome the fear of starving
to death, loosing Your accommodation and Your good life, because with
out going to work, there will be no income. Most people will get fired for
not showing up at work. That's where the community spirit kicks in. People
helping people interdependently, nobody is left out.
Governments all over the Globe have betrayed, abused and stolen from the
very people they ought to protect. Let people decide whether they believe
it would be worth staying at home to change the ways of human destiny.
We are all better off without corrupt governments world wide.
If one does believe it is too much asked for to stay at home in protest, one's
future will be hell on earth. We are all Palestinians in Spirit. We are all given
empty promises, over and over again. We are all in the cross hair of
extermination by people who thrive on our fear. Our governments eat our
Souls, because they themselves have none.

"At what point, U.S. citizens, do we realize our government DOES NOT represent us?" Well, uh, gee, that is a personal question.
Personally, about the 2nd grade, Got over the indignation of it all? Two years later. But anger is kind of fun, huh?
From the Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/03/gaza-diary-israel
That was a bit of a tear jerker. I dare anyone to read it without crying.
I'm not surprised at this atrocity given that not only did the US help Israel but the EU's silence in addition to the silence of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan was more than enough to put them in the guilty camp not mentioning their secret conspiring with the zionists running Israel to wipe out the Palestinians. And what about China and Russia?
P.S.: It's time we all united and empowered good Jewish groups such as J Street. Thanks DCBeltway1. Let's spread the word on J Street from our local areas to the states and finally all the way national. The good Jews who survived the Holocaust would never support damiens such as AIPAC.
