Israeli Ground Troops Enter Gaza
JERUSALEM - Israeli troops began moving into Gaza on Saturday night, Israel Defense Forces said.
"We have just a short while ago launched the second stage of the operation against Hamas infrastructure," IDF spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich told CNN.
Earlier, the Israelis used ground artillery for the first time in the eight-day-old conflict when Israeli tanks fired shells into Gaza from the northern and eastern borders.
Troops had been massed along the border since the IDF began its bombardment of the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory December 27.
Leaflets signed by the commander of the Israeli military were dropped over northern Gaza on Saturday morning, warning residents to "leave the area immediately" to ensure their safety.
"Due to the terrorist actions undertaken by terrorist elements from the region of your residences against the state of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces are compelled to respond immediately in the region of your residences. For your safety, you are ordered to leave the area immediately," the leaflets said.
The geographic area covered by the word "region" was not defined.
Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal promised bloodshed if Israeli ground troops enter Gaza.
"As for you, the soldiers of the enemy whose leadership are getting you ready to enter Gaza in a ground attack, you need to know that doom will await you and you will be killed, injured and captured," Meshaal, speaking in Syria, said on the Al Jazeera television network Friday.
"If the enemy got into Gaza, our people will fight from one street to the next, from one house to the other, and on every inch of the land."
An Israeli airstrike hit a mosque in the northern Gaza village of Beit Lahiya on Saturday evening, killing 13 people and wounding 60, according to Palestinian medical sources.
An Israeli attack earlier Saturday killed Azkariah al-Jamal, the commander of Gaza City's rocket-launching squads, Palestinian and IDF sources said.
Another airstrike killed two Hamas militants in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, Palestinian officials said.
Leibovich said Hamas militants had launched 20 rockets from Gaza into Israel by late afternoon Saturday.
Rockets set a house on fire in Ashkelon, damaged a kibbutz dining hall and slightly wounded two people in an eight-story building in Ashdod, according to Israeli ambulance services.
"We still see that Hamas is targeting Israeli civilians. Namely, we still did not reach the goal of crippling Hamas' launching capabilities," Leibovitch said.
"We still have many more targets to go," she added.
An IDF statement said Israeli missiles fired from jets and ships hit 25 Hamas "outposts, training camps and rocket launching sites" Saturday morning.
The houses of two alleged Hamas terror operatives were also hit, the IDF said.
One, it said, was the home of Azadin Hadad, described as the head of the Hamas military group in eastern Gaza City.
The other, in Beit Lahiya, was used to store rocket-launching equipment and was the home of Ismail Renam, who "has a central role in the launching of Grad-type rockets against Israel," the IDF said.
Grad-type rockets have a longer range than the rudimentary Qassam rockets Hamas more commonly uses.
Israeli officials say four people have been killed and 59 wounded in Hamas rocket attacks in the past week.
Palestinian medical sources said Saturday that at least 435 people have been killed and 2,285 wounded in Gaza.

Its time to look at things as they really are, not how we'd like them to be, not for any ideological reasons. To any of you that are blaming the US for this, your claims lack any credibility if you do not also blame the other responsible parties. And there is plenty to go around.
When the US bankrolls Israel's war machine, the US shouldn't get a pass. BTW that's my tax dollars going to Israel too, so don't tell me to shut up!!!
Israel and the U.S. are 90% responsible for this mess. Israel for holding land outside its recognized green line border, hint a viable Palestine and real productive jobs for Palestinians would reduce the appeal of terrorists organizations like Hamas. And the U.S.'s responsibility funding the lopsided oppression of Palestinian aspirations to having a viable state to live in. Hamas and other terrorist organizations bear perhaps 10% responsibility for firing crude rockets in RESPONSE to their oppression when civil disobedience or targeting legitimate military targets like Israelis officials would be a more effective strategy. Of course lets not forget the U.S. and Israel ENCOURAGED Hamas to counter the PLO and Fatah:
"Israel and Hamas may currently be locked in deadly combat, but, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials, beginning in the late 1970s, Tel Aviv gave direct and indirect financial aid to Hamas over a period of years.
Israel "aided Hamas directly -- the Israelis wanted to use it as a counterbalance to the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization)," said Tony Cordesman, Middle East analyst for the Center for Strategic Studies.
Israel's support for Hamas "was a direct attempt to divide and dilute support for a strong, secular PLO by using a competing religious alternative," said a former senior CIA official.
According to documents United Press International obtained from the Israel-based Institute for Counter Terrorism, Hamas evolved from cells of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928. Islamic movements in Israel and Palestine were "weak and dormant" until after the 1967 Six Day War in which Israel scored a stunning victory over its Arab enemies.
After 1967, a great part of the success of the Hamas/Muslim Brotherhood was due to their activities among the refugees of the Gaza Strip. The cornerstone of the Islamic movements success was an impressive social, religious, educational and cultural infrastructure, called Da'wah, that worked to ease the hardship of large numbers of Palestinian refugees, confined to camps, and many who were living on the edge.
"Social influence grew into political influence," first in the Gaza Strip, then on the West Bank, said an administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to ICT papers, Hamas was legally registered in Israel in 1978 by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the movement's spiritual leader, as an Islamic Association by the name Al-Mujamma al Islami, which widened its base of supporters and sympathizers by religious propaganda and social work.
According to U.S. administration officials, funds for the movement came from the oil-producing states and directly and indirectly from Israel. The PLO was secular and leftist and promoted Palestinian nationalism. Hamas wanted to set up a transnational state under the rule of Islam, much like Khomeini's Iran.
What took Israeli leaders by surprise was the way the Islamic movements began to surge after the Iranian revolution, after armed resistance to Israel sprang up in southern Lebanon vis--vis the Hezbollah, backed by Iran, these sources said.
"Nothing provides the energy for imitation as much as success," commented one administration expert.
A further factor of Hamas' growth was the fact the PLO moved its base of operations to Beirut in the '80s, leaving the Islamic organization to grow in influence in the Occupied Territories "as the court of last resort," he said.
When the intifada began, Israeli leadership was surprised when Islamic groups began to surge in membership and strength. Hamas immediately grew in numbers and violence. The group had always embraced the doctrine of armed struggle, but the doctrine had not been practiced and Islamic groups had not been subjected to suppression the way groups like Fatah had been, according to U.S. government officials.
But with the triumph of the Khomeini revolution in Iran, with the birth of Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorism in Lebanon, Hamas began to gain in strength in Gaza and then in the West Bank, relying on terror to resist the Israeli occupation.
Israel was certainly funding the group at that time. One U.S. intelligence source who asked not to be named said that not only was Hamas being funded as a "counterweight" to the PLO, Israeli aid had another purpose: "To help identify and channel towards Israeli agents Hamas members who were dangerous terrorists."
In addition, by infiltrating Hamas, Israeli informers could only listen to debates on policy and identify Hamas members who "were dangerous hard-liners," the official said.
In the end, as Hamas set up a very comprehensive counterintelligence system, many collaborators with Israel were weeded out and shot. Violent acts of terrorism became the central tenet, and Hamas, unlike the PLO, was unwilling to compromise in any way with Israel, refusing to acquiesce in its very existence.
But even then, some in Israel saw some benefits to be had in trying to continue to give Hamas support: "The thinking on the part of some of the right-wing Israeli establishment was that Hamas and the others, if they gained control, would refuse to have any part of the peace process and would torpedo any agreements put in place," said a U.S. government official who asked not to be named.
"Israel would still be the only democracy in the region for the United States to deal with," he said.
All of which disgusts some former U.S. intelligence officials.
"The thing wrong with so many Israeli operations is that they try to be too sexy," said former CIA official Vincent Cannestraro.
According to former State Department counter-terrorism official Larry Johnson, "the Israelis are their own worst enemies when it comes to fighting terrorism."
"The Israelis are like a guy who sets fire to his hair and then tries to put it out by hitting it with a hammer."
"They do more to incite and sustain terrorism than curb it," he said."

terryb,
"God damn Israel."
God damn islamic jihad terrorists, who DELIBERATELY target and kill, innocent men, women, and children in the name of allah.
Rocket fire from Gaza over the past week has killed four people in Israel.
Meanwhile, more than 485 Palestinians have died, including 80 children, with more than 2,500 wounded according to Gaza medics since Israeli military operations began on December 27.
One needn't support Hamas to see that there is NO comparison between what they have done and the atrocities that Israel has committed against the Palestinian people for the last sixty years.
Your contention is that its OK for the 4 to die? I doubt it. Your contention is that the Israeli deaths from these rockets before this week don't count? Again, I doubt it.
The more I look into this the more I find out. I was very familiar with what went on between 1930 and 1950, but I really didn't pay attention after that.
The Israeli are certainly not blameless, I find many instances where they were wrong. But I am also finding out what has been done to the Palestinian people by the Arab nations.
I see your point, but if you attack a much stronger adversary its not to surprising who will have the larger casualties.
I have really been astounded to see some of the comments on this whole thing. Thanks for a rational one.
Zionist Jews have been randomly murdering innocent Palestinians since 1928.
And why will no one talk of the Jewish terrorists who planned to blow up a Jewish girls school and blame it on the Palestinians? Why will no one talk about the Israelis evicting people from their lands that they have held title to for generations, and have the legal documents to back up their claims.
It's always 'the Palestinians provoked the Israelis'. There is never any mention of the MANY documented false flag ops that are detailed by the Jerusalem Post and other Israeli news services.
Hell, is anyone here willing to admit that Israel attacked the USS Liberty in an effort to draw the US into it's war with Egypt?
good call on the liberty Galenwainwright, let's not forget the nuclear secrets acquired by israel from the US. nuclear weapons in israel, just what the world didn't need (just like we didn't need an apartheid government in south africa - a government the israeli's psychically bonded with), w/ friends like israel, who needs enemies....
why exactly are we giving military aid to a country that conducts espionage in the US ?

{American accused of giving nuclear secrets to Israel
Department of Justice says US citizen arrested on suspicion of having provided sensitive information to Israeli agents regarding nuclear weapons, fighter jets, air defense missiles during 1980's
Yitzhak Benhorin
Latest Update: 04.23.08
"United States authorities arrested an American engineer on Tuesday on suspicion of giving military secrets involving nuclear weapons, fighter jets and air defense missiles to Israel during the 1980s, the Justice Department said. Investigators believe 83-year-old Ben-Ami Kadish took home secret documents and letthe Israeli government worker photograph them."
Court papers indicate Kadish acknowledged his spying in FBI interviews and said he acted out of a belief that he was helping Israel."}
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Pollard
{"Pollard's routine was to gather documents during the week. He had several large identical brief cases given to him by the Israelis that he would use to remove material from work. Then he would transfer the documents to suitcases, sometimes while in his car. At the end of the week he would drop the documents off with the Israelis for copying. At the end of the weekend Pollard retrieved whatever documents needed to be returned, along with orders for what types of information to get over the next week. On occasion, the Israeli handlers would ask for specific documents by number, suggesting that Pollard wasn't the only agent illegally feeding them information.
Ron Olive, the agent in charge of counterintelligence for the NIS at the time of Pollard's arrest, published a book about the case in 2006. Olive told the BBC that the incident was "one of the most devastating cases of espionage in US history" during which Pollard stole over "one million classified documents".[12]"}
...peace...
I do not see YOUR point.
I have posted this elsewhere, but I'd like to say it here too.
When you see a picture of a Palestinian parent carrying their bloody child in their arms down the street, when you see an Israeli parent caring their bloody child into a hospital....does it really make any difference who is has the greatest degree of right or wrong any more?
Hamas and Israel are both at fault here. There is no question about that unless you are a liar.
There is no question that the UN is useless here as always. Without the power to enforce your decisions only a fool would believe they are relevant other than to issue condemnations.
Only Israel and her enablers (yes, that includes us) and Hamas and its enablers can stop this. And stop it they must.
Why is it so hard to stop shooting rockets into Israel, to stop incursions into Israel? Allow no terrorist attacks inside Israel. For Israel to withdraw, to stop her air and sea blockade, promise no incursions on the ground or by air. Seal the border between the two and live in peace for a bit to see if this can't be worked out.
Its time to look at things as they really are, not how we'd like them to be, not for any ideological reasons. To any of you that are blaming the US for this, your claims lack any credibility if you do not also blame the other responsible parties. And there is plenty to go around.
The only innocent people in this whole mess are the Palestinians trapped in Gaza between to warring sides.
Look at those pictures of those kids and tell me what difference it makes who started what. I did and it took me about one-second to decide those kids and their parents are the only ones that count. On both sides.
Please call your congressmen, representatives, e-mail your newspapers, whatever to see if enough pressure can be generated to make our coward in chief put pressure on Israel to stop. The waste is atrocious. It breaks my heart.
They will not achieve victory, but I still hope that the Palestinians in the Gaza strip do EVERYTHING THEY CAN to resist the Zionist incursion. They need to employ guerrilla style attacks to defend themselves.

And we, sitting in front of our computers in our overheated rooms with our overfed bellies dragging on the ground, are complicit. The Palestinians have suffered through countless Israeli trespasses.
Israel would like nothing better than to destroy the Palestinians. Period. It would suit their purposes. Ask any Israeli if his/her life would be better without the pesky Palestinians. Yes, a hundred times, yes. Kill them all would be their refrain--and that's what's going on.
To stop this disaster is the job of decent people and decent nations. How? Establish a military force between the 2 fighting groups--the UN, EU, etc. This group is master of the situation, much like NATO in Kosovo. Then set up the so-called 2 state solution. If Israel builds more settlements or blockades or Hamas sends over rockets , then this force intervenes.
Tough love indeed. But both sides need it because it has gotten out of hand.
Dr Wu,
It is Genocide plain and simple. there is great irony here, for the once oppressed have quickly become oppressors themselves. I and many others are tired of having the holocaust, so called, thrown in my face with the implication; "see what the world did to us" while at the same time witnessing Genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinian people in the name of "we have the right to protect ourselves". Remember, the Nazis also said, "we have the right to protect ourselves" The more you point your finger at someone else to criticize the more you become just like them.

It is very personal, even though it is happening somewhere else.
It feels like we are living in a world dominated by high priests.
Enough.
I see that out Senate Leaders, Reed etc., are all in favor of Israelis shooting Palestinean children - with depleted uranium - thereby rendering Gaza uninhabitable for thousands of years - and the children dead of course.

Depleted uranium found in Gaza victims
Sun, 04 Jan 2009 13:16:21 GMT
Medics tell Press TV they have found traces of depleted uranium in some Gazan residents wounded in Israel's ground offensive into the strip.
Norwegian medics told Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari that some of the victims who have been wounded since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip on December 27 have traces of depleted uranium in their bodies.
The report comes after Israeli tanks and troops swept across the border into Gaza on Saturday night, opening a ground operation after eight days of intensive attacks by Israeli air and naval forces on the impoverished region.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Sunday that the wide-ranging ground offensive in the Gaza Strip would be "full of surprises."

I just in HuffPo that an editorialist from the London Spectator (I believe that's the publication if my memory serves me well) called for the arrest of journalists who criticize Israel. Bunch of Nazis.
Ilan Pappe: Israel's righteous fury and its victims in Gaza
"..................It seems that even the most horrendous crimes, such as the genocide in Gaza, are treated as discrete events, unconnected to anything that happened in the past and not associated with any ideology or system. In this new year, we have to try to realign the public opinion to the history of Palestine and to the evils of the Zionist ideology as the best means of both explaining genocidal operations such as the current one in Gaza and as a way of pre-empting worse things to come............"

nahida:good day to you. Peace. Ali Abunimah is a good journalist and I respect his website. My art,in protest, has been completed. To be continued as can.
ray kelly went with michael bloomberg the mayor of ny to israel in order to show their support for the terrorist state of israel. this makes them complic in these crimes and deaths. these ziocons-ziolibs that are running our country have to be exposed for the snakes that they are.
There is too much name calling here. That accomplishes nothing constructive, positive, or of any value. That being said, here is my view of the reality being confronted in Palestine.
Hamas followers are terrorists, or Palestinian patriots depending on who is judging them. The Israeli state is terrorist, or a democratic nation defending itself depending who is judging it. Israel is like a medieval walled city under siege and Gaza is much like a prison camp outside its gates. Any clear headed judgment will come to that conclusion.
The whole set of events unfolding in Gaza is a horror, just as were the recent events that flattened half of the nation of Lebanon. Nothing about them is defensible. A large part of the violence throughout the Middle East has emanated from this never ending Israeli/Palestinian conflict (since well before the UN mandate) and from the first world nations' need to control oil resources. A majority of the world's people are appalled at and tired of this incessant hatred and violence in Palestine (even though many of their leaders seem to encourage it actively or through inaction).
One could pose the question of what level of Dante's Inferno should each of these two battling tribes be relegated to?
And here is another question that someone out there may have a answer to. What the name of god or the devil is Ray Kelly doing in Israel?
Richsmith2. Patriots or terrorists depending on who is judging them. True, but I would add that a freedom fighter or a patriot is someone that is willing to kill and murder innocent people to support the vested interests of the elite and a terrorist is willing to kill and murder innocent people for the vested interests of their elite. The vested interests are: economic, strategic, religious, financial, hegemonic, ect. It is an ad hominem; and just depends on ones perspective.
'Israel is like a medieval walled city under siege and Gaza is much like a prison camp outside its gates'
Except that no medieval walled city also had 100 miles of the most heavily protected and patrolled coastline in the world. Israel also has several international and military airports that can handle heavy aircraft. That's where your analogy breaks down. As such, Israel is not under siege. Gaza is.
No medieval walled city also has the 5th largest stock-pile of nuclear weapons in the world.
LOL. Too true. Did you know that if Albuquerque (New Mexico) seceded from the USA, it would be the third largest nuclear power?
Hmmmm. Maybe that's why Bill seceded from Obama's cabinet....
Wow had no idea!
WTF:thank you for the Albuquerque line!

According to the" book"jacob was deceived by his wife,so that he gave Issac his blessing instead of Ishmael the rightful heir.
So Ishmael departs with his tribe(maybe a hundred people) and moves maybe a hundred miles away.
The descendants of Ishmael are the Palestinians they are all semitic.
The Palestinians are half brothers to the semitic jews.
And the the true heirs of the tribe of Abraham.
This is the reason the rest of the arab world has never come to the aid of the Palestinians. THE ARABS HAVE ENOUTH WEALTH THEY COULD MAKE PALESTINE ANOTHER DUBIA.
Part of the tribe traveled to a land where they encountered a tribe of germanic heritage, the tribes merged and traveled throughout what is now europe.
The decendants of this merged tribe, are the majority of jews that exist in the world today.
The chief rabbi of israel about twelve years ago said during an interview that MAYBE THE JEWS WHO DIED IN THE HOLOCOST WEWRE SUPPOSED TO DIE.
The next day the statement was retracted ,without further comment.
THERE IS NO POSSABLE CIRCUMTANCE IN WHICH THIS STATEMENT COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT.
For the chief rabbi of israel to say this, implies that some jews were conplicit in the holocast and that the jews that control israel today are part of the nazi cobal that existed in germany. And the nazi jews imegrated to the USA
after the war. And proceeded to buy this country, its politicians, its banking business, its defence industry, the communication industries, the movie industry .
When the financial industry collasped (belive me this was know by this cabal)rather than they losing money, they created this illusionary panic ,the whole banking system will fail, mothers wont be able to buy milk for the little kiddies etc etc.
And paulson proceeded to tell the american people that he needed eight hundred billion dollars imediately,no questions asked and he almost got it .Congress steps in with this big fanfare, and meekly pases the bailout with certain conditions for the american taxpayers.
paulson has to promise that the exec's wont get any bonus
money and that some of the money will go to the poor homeowners,so that they might be able to pay their morguage.
Wasen't that so nice of congress, paulson gets eight billion
dollars to do what he wants to do,as well as one hundred billion dollar tax credit for the bankingindustry, without telling aanybody, he amends the tax code, which only congress has the athority to do.. meanwhile bernake
just happens to be giving a trillion dollars to various banks etc.when asked to explain where the money went,he says, thats not a good idea to tell you that,so i won't.
And three humdred and fifty billion, thats billions of citizens, barely issue's a wimper.
IF YOU CAN'T REALIZE THAT THE WHOLE COUNTRY HAS BEEN PSYCOLOGICALLY BRAINWASHED, THIS IS TRULY THE END, AND WE HAVE BECOME,OR WILL SOON BECOME A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.
i GUESS THE JEWISH NAZI'S DID WIN AFTER all ,instead of dominating europe they just bought america.
One last statment when the israeli forces were pulling out of lebbonon, because of the cease fire that was to go in effect the next day. they dropped cluster bombs all over the
farming lands in lebonon.
IF THAT IS NOT A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT IS A NAZI DECENDANT ,NOT ONLY IS THE U.S. FUCKED
THE WHOLE WORLD IS FUCKED.

Its not the oil its the AIPAC. Jeez why the left insists on fighting with one hand tied behind thier back over this issue baffles me. Of course blaming oil also benefits Israel since the Arabs in the Gulf make thier money off of the oil and Israel envies that wealth.
Wrong. The U.S. pays the Israel government $15M dollars a day to be its proxy of influence in a region that is rich in carbon. The purpose of a proxy in this case is to disguise the true intent. The disguise is working somewhat, judging from most of the comments here. The U.S. is acting on behalf of the carbon-auto-sprawl industry which includes certain Gulf states. This is not a "left" position. The U.S. State Department repeatedly states that the U.S. must look after its own interests in the Middle-East and that Israel is a U.S. friend. You have to be well educated (or propagandized) not to hear their own words and see their own actions. They have been open and consistent on this.

It's Not Just the Oil
By Stanley Heller
Does a boxer fight with one hand tied behind his back?
Why is the anti-war movement reluctant to talk about all the reasons for the drive to invade Iraq?
Yes, major reasons for the permanent war drive are corporate greed for oil, dreams of political domination, and the lust to test weapons. But there's another one. Extreme right-wing forces from a foreign country and their powerful American backers are pushing the U.S. to invade Iraq and many other countries. I'm, of course, talking about Israel.
On November 12 Zev Chafets wrote an incredibly revealing article in the New Haven Register. In an article headlined,"Disarming Iraq is only a start in Middle East" he explained that the Arab and Iranian cultures were "irrational" and that nothing could be done to "improve the collective mental health of Arab societies".
He proposed "giving the Arabs and Iran a stark choice they can have sovereignty or jihad (in its secular or religious forms), but not both". He says "disarming" but of course he means invading the "Middle East's most hostile and deranged regimes".
Now, who is Zev Chafets? He was originally from Michigan, but went to Israel in 1967 and fought in their army and became director of the government press officer under Prime Minister Menachem Begin. He's now a columnist for the New York Daily News. His ideas reflect the desires of Likud, the Israeli ruling party, one variant of extreme Israeli right wing opinion.
The current party head, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, is delirious for the war. In his mind, with Iraq leveled the Palestinians will give up hope and he then can go on to his other objectives, destroying the governments of Lebanon, Syria and Iran.
How is this influencing the U.S.? It's not blatant. When you go to the Anti-Defamation League site you see nothing calling for war with Iraq. Sharon doesn't have to engage in noisy public appeals. The forces that demand the Iron Fist as the answer to all problems (the Neo-Cons) are at the highest levels of the U.S. government.
When I was in Hebrew School I remember the teachers railing at the State Department for being filled with "Arabists" who hated Israel. Nobody rational would say that today. The top officials and advisors to Bush are all rabid Neo-Cons.
Some like Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and David Wurmser actually worked for Israeli think tanks, writing grand papers for (Likud) Prime Minister Netanyahu on how the U.S. and Israel should take apartand reconstruct the Middle East.
Do we have to talk about Congress? Just a few days ago the House voted near unanimously to congratulate the Israeli government on its wonderful fair election. Here's a government that is in material breach of the Security Council "demand" that it remove its forces from the Palestinian cities and Congress offers it hugs and kisses.
Is it any wonder? The Israel Apartheid lobby just knocked off a fourterm Congresswoman (McKinney) as it has done to Senators and Congressmen so many times in the past.
Years ago a wit called Congress "Israeli Occupied Territory". The joke is still right on the mark.
Are we giving aid to anti-Semites by denouncing Likud-Neo-con influence? Not at all. In no way are we advancing the loony nazi charge that "the Jews" run the country. Sure, many neo-cons are Jews. Jews are also the leaders of the U.S. anti-war movement.
The biggest Jewish organizations are backing Sharon, but most Jews don't support them. According to a 1995 survey by the American Jewish Committee only 22% of American Jews consider themselves Zionists.
Most American Jews don't give a dime to the ADL or any other Israel boosting organization.
A small group of U.S. Jews are fanatical supporters of Israeli Apartheid and they shower it with money. But even though they seem to have the world by a string, it isn't so. When Israeli interests clash with American ruling class interests the tail does not wag the dog. [Ask Jonathan Pollard who's sitting out alife term in Danbury prison]
The U.S. ruling class is overwhelmingly Christian and the fundamentalism that inspires it is Pat Robertson's evangelism, not Jewish Orthodoxy.
Our argument is angry but precise. When the Left denounces Sharon we mean Sharon. When we assail an obvious foreign influence we're not alleging some all-powerful secret plot. When we condemn Israeli apartheid we denounce a Jewish superiority state, notthe idea that Jews should live in Israel and enjoy every human right.
With that said we owe it to Americans to tell them the whole truth, that part of the war drive is being fueled by a wacko militarist clique from Israel and its interlocking bands of American Jewish and Christian supporters.
We're told not to bring up Israeli influence on the U.S. because it would split our supporters. Well, who would it alienate? It would tick off a certain group of Jews, those Jews who are schizophrenic politically, people who can be liberal or radical on every causeexcept Israel. They learned democracy in school, but they're still intimidated by their grandmothers.
Most importantly we need to be honest and tell the whole truth to Americans. They need to know of all the reasons behind the drive to conquer Iraq. Some of us used the following chant in NYC. I recommend it at your next rally. "Bush and Sharon, they say War. We say, No!, We say No!"
Stanley Heller has been chairperson of the Middle East Crisis Committee (New Haven) since 1982. He is a moderator of al-Awda-Unity, a division of the Right to Return movement intent on encouraging Jewish activism. He can be reached at mail@TheStruggle.org
Senator Arlen Specter, PA Senator Carl Levin, Michigan Sen Charlie Schummer, NY Sen Frank Lautenberg, New Jersey Senator Diane Feinstein and sen Barbara Boxer, California Sen Russ Feingold, Wisc Senator Norm Coleman (or Al Franken) Minnesota Sen Joe Lieberman, Connecticut At least 10% of US senators are Jewish-Americans!!! Have you heard any speak out against Israel? I am sure their silence is in OUR best interests....not!
I am now a full-fledged zionist hater and I say it proudly. They deserve it for making America so hated in the world. It is time to go to DC and demonstrate against all Jews in our government.
What?!! This is ridiculous and dishonors progressive ideas. Jews and Zionists are two different things. You can be Christian and support Zionism. Those who have made USA so hated include the likes of Erik Prince, a Christian and Dick Cheney, whatever he is. I cannot believe I have to say this, but feel obliged.
It is time to demonstrate for and end to the siege, an end to the attacks on Gaza and against giving any further military assistance or other aid to Israel.
Joe
Now heres one area I can help you on and be sure I'm correct. Dick Cheney is the excrement left by the nastiest thing that is lower than Whale excrement on the ocean floor.
No that is beyond stupid. Yes protest against those who have proven ties to AIPAC like Hilary "I will obliterate Iran" Clinton, no to blanket hatred of all Jews without regard to their actual position on issues. Did we learn nothing from Martin Luther King's "judge people by the content of their character and not the color their skin."
Some the most courages people opposing Israel are Jewish like Amy Goodman, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Norman Finklstein.
Thanks, hootowl.
This is one of the best posts on this thread.
Amen you travel in good company.

People you had better take note of that Jew Mike Bloomberggoing to Israel. I guess he is doing this because he is a good AMERICAN.. I have no respect left for so called Americans when their only interest is Israel not us. Citizens should tumble his empire and quickly.
And how about decent honorable Jewish people like Noan Chomsky, Amy Goodman, Howard Zinn, and Norman Finklestein who call out Israel on it's crimes on a regular basis? Please remove the racist use of the word Jew from your post it's disgusting and smacks of Nazi rhetoric. The honorable movement to oppose Israel's crimes against humanity has no place in it for hateful Nazis.

F**K these damn Zionists. It just makes me sick to my stomach. And what's scary is Biden's close ties to AIPAC and his self description of being a Zionist. The genocide will unfortunately continue during the next administration.

The Song should be Their Land is our Land ,Only Jews are allowed to discuss this dogfight and as they are always right and only the ones who ever suffered ;
feel they are the chosen ones it`s kind of a bit like the master race,so in America they are the only voice allowed to discuss the Palestinians fate or they will persecute you for speaking out if you differ from their views.
Dialogue is dead, the Land water olive groves air space food fuel housing air space freedom of movement all at the wishes of the Israeli`s , if they would just be good sheep .
MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL ARE SUFFERING FROM POST TRAUMATIC STRESS,
and the culture of both sides is shaped by traumatic stress. Stubborn, dogmatic, aggressive and irrational. It is insane for the Israelis to think they can get away with continually expanding settlements. It is equally insane for the Palestinians to imagine that there can be peace while advocating the elimination of a Jewish state, as the PLO did until 1987, and Hamas does now.
Body parts hanging from the trees. As has been described to me. On both sides, though worse on the Palestinian. Can one ever recover from seeing that?
But we who do not live in the zone of evisceration need to ask ourselves: is it useful to curse and damn? Be careful about condemning anyone to damnation, for those who are damned will commit even more carnage while they are still alive.
Yes there needs to be an immediate cease fire; and yes Israel should withdraw from the Occupied Territories and from the settlements. But I will not join any rallies which are not looking to create a settlement that both sides can live with. There have been such proposals, such as the Geneva accords, written by dissidents on both sides, and rejected by the establishments of both sides.
It is our job to continue looking for a just peace, which I imagine will involve two states. It will be very difficult, since the distrust on both sides is nearly total, and for good reason. But we must keep trying; because sooner or later there will be enough nuclear armed parties to make a real holocaust inevitable. In the meantime we need to proceed "with charity for all," remembering that Lincoln said this in the midst of a war which was far more bloody than anything that has yet occurred between Palestine and Israel.
There are regions of the world where the carnage has surpassed that of Palestine and Israel, or that of the American Civil War: Congo, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan. Strange to say, the passions connected with these much greater bloodbaths rarely approach those connected with the "Holy Land." Righteousness and insults just make it worse, from either side. Can we have a movement which is both militant and compassionate? That's the one I want to join.
Mayor Bloomberg and go f*&k himself, but he's probably safer in isrscum than in the UK where anti-israscum demonstration have drawn over 70,000 pissed off brits to the israscum embassy. Here's the story with video. The protest against this brutal zionist violation of human rights in gathering steam and more violence.

If you'd like to write to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is, according to CNN, on his way to Israel, to support the "jewish state" in its onslaught of civilians, use his own Bloomberg LLP address, that he personally reads, and let him know what you think about the appropriateness of his trip:

Maybe it is time to quote, once again, the German pastor Martin Niemoeller:
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

NorthWind:Thank you. I did not know until I was a disabled adult, from an article in "Disability Rag" in the 1980s, that the first killed were the mentally disabled in Germany. The psychiatrists in institutions killed them with lethal injections.
NYCartist, once we are seduced to believe that some of us are less human than others there is no limit to the barbarism some are capable of.
My subconscious remembers a little boy of 16 months huddled in a cellar in Chemnitz while bombs crashed into the houses above. Today I cry at the thought of all the children who have to live through such an experience. And I curse the cowards in governments and cockpits who callously dish out such suffering from a safe distance.
For those who, by accident of birth, sit in warmth and safety yet cry for blood and vengeance, I have nothing but contempt.
Hey (off topic), whatever happened to Jcrumb and his all capitals replies? Did he get banned? He would normally be all over this article. I got my work place IP banned for making loud leftists comments ripping on the right, even though Craig wont admit it. Now I'm just a weekend commenter, and not sending money anymore.
Breaking News:
1. Mayor Bloomberg is on his way to Israel, to support the "jewish state" in its onslought of civilians. Why does Michael Bloomberg support killing of children, pregnant women, old men...? He'd better be running for mayor of Tel Aviv in the next term.
2. The US has blocked the UN Security Council's resolution requesting the cease of
fire in Gaza. Retard Bush has made another decision that mean more death to innocents.
Equally criminal from the Israeli onslaught against the Palestinians is the backing they receive from the US. If Obama were worth his salt he would have spoken out by now.
Of course he says nothing, his AIPAC speech put him to the right of Israelis themselves.
And for those who claim he isn't president yet, I say he sure had no qualms urging for a wealth transfer for Wall Street Fat Cats before he became president. He has no problem speaking out for the powerful elites, it's speaking out for the weak and dispossessed that causes the cat to catch his tongue.
In my book Obama's silence makes him complicit. The more things "change" the more they stay the same. Keep deluding yourselves.
Did you think he wasn't working for the same people bush was?

For a second day running, Israeli authorities have barred a Red Cross medical team from entering Gaza to help treat residents injured in bombings.
"The ICRC had notified the authorities of the team's arrival in advance, but they have been awaiting authorization to enter the (Gaza) Strip since Friday morning," the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement on Saturday.
The same border crossing has been opened for other aid workers and foreigners seeking to leave Gaza, the Red Cross said, even as its own members -- including a surgeon tasked to help with complex operations at Gaza's Shifa Hospital -- were denied access.
"It is absolutely essential that this team get into Gaza now, as this is when they are most needed," said Pierre Wettach, who heads Red Cross operations in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
---------- http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=80394§ionid=351020202 ----------
This denial of the Red Cross (and reporters) is identical
to the Nazi death camps - for the same genocidal reasons.
Secretary of State, SS Rice, said that she wants to end the suffering of these (mostly women and children) Gaza civilians and with America's massive support in both weapons and UN vetos she is well on the way to the eradication of 1.5 millian Palestineans. The only real snag in this plan is that the people of Gaza have run out of not only food and fuel but also burial plots. Maybe our American government will be so kild as to fund the Israelis to set up ovens in Gaza to provide a 'final solution' to this problem. Christian values after all...
I think that our Congressional genocidal monsters put aside their squabbling over the bleached bones of our Republic long enough to take up a collection for the incineration of the entire population of Gaza. I'm sure that some enterprising Israeli will find a way to generate electricity and fertalizer from the remains - waste not, want not is the Capitalist way!
Humbaba, the Israelis are Insane. They demonstrate what happens when religion takes over the minds of humans. That is why religion is so dangerous.
Not to let in the Red Cross is the action of savages. Then the Israeli-Nazis are savages as they have been revealing to the world for sixty years.

Even the Israeli civilians are demonstrating against IDF actions.
BTW - here is a link to a picture of an artillery round exploding in Gaza. I think that it is a WP (white phosphorous) shell. If so, another war crime charge. It is illegal under Geneva to use WP shells in civilian areas.

But I could be wrong !
"Even the Israeli civilians are demonstrating against IDF actions."
Well that's a start. What took them so long? Never mind.

I think it is fair to say that a significant number of Israelis disagree with their leader's actions against Gaza. They are as horrified at this action being taken in their name, as most Americans are against the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Alas, the 'good' Israelis are as lazy as 'good' Americans in implementing regime change within their respective countries.
DaveBronstein you are correct. I have allowed my rage to consume me and lump all Jews together. The ones I mentioned specifically deserve my hatetred bedause they stoke the flames. My wife is of Jewish (Lithuania) ancestry, thus my children are semitic on both sides. Thanks for drawing the difference.
I become suspicious when Jews say they are semitic. Sorry, but facts show that most are not semitic. Palestinians are semitic.
Gaza is about the size of the island of Guam. These people cannot even get out. I do not feel sorry for those "Israelis" who live in the South and were targets of the rocket fire, as they do have the opportunity to leave the area. The Gazans are stuck inside their little prison. This, along with Iraq and Afghanistan (and somalia) are the most horrendous crimes committed during this new century. I cannot see where this is different than Hitler. I saw that bitch Livni going on about the right of Israel to murder these people. She had coldness in her eyes. Its appalling to witness this Hitler style oppression and murder going on. I have lost all respect in the U.S. government for financing these murderers. I have lost all respect for Jewish people, too...... and remember, if you call your illegal state a "jewish state" you are opening yourself up for critisism of your religion. Mixing church and state as Israel does, is their way of being able to scream "Anti-Semites, Anti-Semites!!!!" They are the biggest liars, along with the Three branch government in the U.S. and London. The Axis of Evil: Washington D.C./Tel Aviv/London
Jonah, I am impressed when I see/hear a man who is able to say he is wrong. There's a memoir by Amos Oz, whose family was Lithuanian Jews, who was born in Jerusalem in 1939, a novelist and calls himself a peace activist. The book, "A Tale of Love and Darkness" was so different from my NYC Jewish background, grandparents mostly from Warsaw. My closest friend has one side of family from Lithuania, Catholic.
God damn Israel.
And damn the United States, for enabling Israel.
And don't forget to include Europe, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt in the damnation since they too enabled Israel. Ok, maybe Europe isn't completely bad since they did provide infrastructure support for the Palestinians but for them to sit by idly and let the zionists run Israel to the point of MANIFEST DESTINY just shows that they still have yet to learn from their old ways.

"Hamas hides in civilian areas making them military targets. Too bad. Maybe you should have dropped a dime on the missle launching squads. No one does of course so *all* civilians are implicated in the Hamas terrorism.
Israel is simply taking out the trash. It worked a treat in 2006, not a missle from Hezbollah fired so far.
And all the Arab armies rushing to poor Hamas' aid. What? Not a one? Nope. Know why? The Arab governments, even Syria are ready for peace and Hamas and Gaza are not.
Again, Palestine IS the problem, Israel is the solution.
No tears here. This is the road to a lasting peace."
It brings to mind the kind of comments posted before the invasion of Iraq. Very slick. Arrogant. Ugly. Out and out lies. Palestine is the problem. Israel is the solution. Just taking out the trash. Beyond help, really.
Yes, this is because Goose4 is a bigot & ignoramus, & thinks just like a Nazi. Ironically, he has the exact same mentality that enabled the slaughter of the Jews in WWII.
Using the exact same ugly words that came from Goose4's small & bigoted mind, here's how a WWII-era anti-Semite might have described the indifference of nations towards the plight of the Jews during the Nazi era:
-------------
"The Third Reich is simply taking out the trash. It worked a treat in 1942-4, not even a shot from the Jews fired so far...And all the world's armies rushing to save the poor Jews. What? Not a one? Nope. Know why? The Axis governments, including Romania, Czechoslovakia, Croatia, Hungary & Poland, are ready for peace and the Jews are not...Again, international Jewry IS the problem, Germany is the solution."
DaveBronstein:There was an article (called "diary")on Daily Kos yesterday or the day before, about the death of former R.I. Senator Claiborne Pell. Pell's father had been the US Rep.to the Commission to study German Human Rights violations, under FDR,(not the exact name of the commission, which I can't remember)of Nazis against Jews. Sen. Pell said his father was sure there was under FDR,a "gentlemen's agreement to do nothing about the Nazis treatment of the Jews". Pell came from an upperclass family. (I'm a Jew and just finished a piece of protest art. I list Guernica, Warsaw, Fallujah and Gaza in the photo, etc. collage.)
hschm, Hello, are you new here? Ev-idently, cause I ain't seen you in many years..."Israel is the Final Solution" gosh Sir, I hear an echo....but you have much work. Islam is a billion, mas, Jews, Bless their Souls are .2% or some such... why not peace? Please tell me, as one who Loves israel, why not peace? Pourqoui?
If you cut off a group of people from the outside world by militarily occupying them, and force them into a state destitution and non-development, how can you be surprised when they send their sons and daughters to blow you up?
I think it is time to stage great marches on all things Jewish. Plan a march to destroy the AIPAC stranglehold of our government. It is time to deport people like Krauthammer, Wm Kristol, Wm Safire, Wolfowicz, Abrams, Wolf Blitzer and any other Jew in America promoting this eradication of the Palestinians. We must plan a march on the 126 lobbying goups who back Israel and physically de-tooth and take the tongues out of the mouth of the Jewish mouthpieces. We must hold to account Fox News HQs and Fatass Limbaugh et.
Dear Jonah, Your attack on these good Americans crosses the lines of decency. Something they are not! Post more!
You are confused, & blurring the lines between 2 things which are quite distinct. The problem here is not "Jews" per se -- it's Zionism & the Israeli government. There are many non-Jewish supporters of Israel & Zionism, such as virtually every non-Jew in the whole US government, as well as American evangelicals. And there are courageous & principled Jews (like Chomsky, Finklestein, etc) and numerous Israelis (like Gideon Levy, Ilan Pappe, Uri Avnery etc) who OPPOSE Israel's murderous aggresssion, & stand absolutely on the principled side of this issue.
It's not a "time to stage marches on all things Jewish" -- it's a time to oppose people & institutions which support Israel's murderousness. It would be fine to deport scum like Krauthammer, Wm Kristol, Wm Safire, Wolfowitz, Abrams, Wolf Blitzer etc -- but not because they are Jewish. Rather, the problem with them is that they're on the wrong side of the issue. It's not their religion per se. // The non-Jews who support Israel -- from Tom DeLay to Hillary Clinton -- are no better than the Jews who support it. Conversely, the Jews who oppose Zionist aggression are to be honored & commended.
DaveBronstien,
Great Post Sir, though I am horrified by Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, to ever attack Judaism is reprehensible.
Excellent comment.
So, what is everyone waiting for?
DaveBronstein,
I agree, if I may, 100%. Jews have often been on the forefront of progressive change. Loyalty though is soul-stealing, many historical examples of this exist. Notably in Europe in the late 30's, early 40's....to every Jew though who now steps forward I bow.
