Liberal Groups Feel Welcome Again in Washington
Environmentalists, labor unions, civil rights advocates and others place their hopes on Obama.
WASHINGTON -- For years, progressive groups and their causes have been in the political wilderness. Now, with Barack Obama preparing to take the White House and Democrats tightening their hold on Congress, the party's liberal constituencies can see their way to a promised land.
HE PROMISED CHANGE, HOPE
Seeking early support from organized labor, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., addresses the Building and Construction Trades Legislative Conference meeting at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington. The president-elect drew support from moderates, but the liberal side of the Democratic Party followed him most resoundingly: anti-war activists, labor unions, environmentalists and legions of grassroots volunteers.
(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) Their vision includes federal laws banning job discrimination against gays; expanded hate-crime laws; public land protections from logging and oil drilling; and easier union organizing of workers.
Labor unions, environmentalists and other liberal groups are eagerly preparing for new confrontations with business and conservative interests. They feel secure in having allies in Washington's power centers, 14 years after Democrats last controlled Congress and the White House. (And some consider the exile even longer, dating from Ronald Reagan's 1980 election, because President Clinton's course was largely centrist and he had only two years with a Democratic majority in Congress.)
"Everybody is seeing the energy that has been unleashed in this election cycle," said Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn.org, a liberal activist group.
Obama, who will have the largest Democratic congressional majority since the 1970s, won election on a platform that embraced causes dear to the party's liberal wing: withdrawal of troops from Iraq, a national healthcare plan and a big investment in clean energy.
"Every interest group, every group in the party, has a list," said Democratic strategist Steve Elmendorf.
Some wish lists may be relatively easy to fulfill. An expanded federal hate-crimes law -- a priority of civil rights and gay rights groups -- cleared Congress but was vetoed by President Bush. The Fair Pay Act -- a priority for women's groups that removes obstacles to pay-discrimination lawsuits -- came within four votes of overcoming a filibuster.
Other challenges are bigger: a pathway to citizenship for illegal workers, for example; or the union-backed Employee Free Choice Act legislation, vigorously opposed by business groups, that would make labor organizing easier.
And liberal groups already have an eye on the economic stimulus plan that the Obama administration and Congress will take up.
Unions want the stimulus to include a large infrastructure building program to create jobs for construction workers. Some want to include renovation of dilapidated schools.
Civil rights groups and advocates for low-income families want the legislation to allow bankruptcy judges to alter repayment terms for mortgages.
Gay and lesbian activists want equal job access and protection for homosexuals.
Environmentalists want the stimulus to include "green jobs" through alternative-energy development.
In fact, environmental groups -- which tangled with the Bush administration over policies minor and major, including protections for air, water, wildlife, and forests and other public lands -- expect swift and sweeping action from Obama on nearly every issue that matters to them.
Environmentalists expect Obama to "hit the reset button," as the Sierra Club's Josh Dorner put it, on a host of regulations that Bush weakened. They expect more input from scientists in framing environmental policy and more action from the Environmental Protection Agency in limiting greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, in keeping with a Supreme Court ruling from last year.
On the campaign trail, Obama pledged to regulate carbon emissions through a "cap and trade" system and to spend $150 billion over 10 years to boost alternative fuels.
Goodwill on the left has largely prevented activists from publicly complaining when Obama has distanced himself from campaign commitments. Labor's response was muted, for example, when he said that before acting on a campaign promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, he'd order a study of NAFTA. And there was little outcry when he signaled in September that he would delay delivering on a promise to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays in the military.
"People are willing to wait a little while," said Elmendorf, the Democratic strategist.
Progressives say the Obama transition team's appointments and meetings with interest groups indicate that the welcome mat will be out at the White House.
"It feels like there's an air of transparency," said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "It is this different feeling, that the door is not closed -- the door is opening."

Show AllI'm really thrilled that liberal groups have a "great feeling" about the welcome they expect to get from the Obama administration, and of course I wish them well in attaining some of the desires of their (and my) heart. I'm less than thrilled that these groups are so willing to refrain from complaint when, for example, Obama signals "second thoughts" on NAFTA reform to the disappointment of labor, not to mention the "refinement" of his plans for Iraqi withdrawal with little protest from the anti-war community. And how can they retain their "great feeling" in the face of the fact, as pointed out in a Jerome Grossman post, that not a single "liberal" has been appointed or prominently mentioned for the Obama cabinet or staff? It's one thing to have a lot of "hope" and feel "welcome" to visit the White House and feel that the President is "listening" to you, and maybe some of the "wish lists" mentioned in this article seem attainable in the happy expectation of a Christmas season; but, really what single, solitary action has indicated that Obama will be any more "welcoming" to them than to the titans of Wall Street and the Pentagon who seem to be in the saddle when it comes to his every selection from Joe Biden as a running mate to the imminent naming of Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates to his cabinet? Given that the Sierra Club, MoveOn, and unions played so big a role in his election, you'd expect him to give them a "feeling" of power and access to his Administration, but where is the slightest evidence that this is happening?
Of course, it's not going to happen. If these groups were paying any attention pre-election and weren't so prone to criticize or complain about those of us who suggested that Obama wasn't going to serve them, then perhaps they would have understood this already. Instead, they keep their blinders on and love him as their savior, just as the poor "conservatives" believed blindly in BushCo. as their savior despite their being disenfranchised at every turn.
It's not easy accepting that you've been had. Obama's about the greatest con man this nation has elected into the highest office, even greater than Bill Clinton.
a little noticed development, that may or may not be directly linked to the global financial crisis that is rooted in the USA -- shows something of the DIFFERENCE in outlook between the USA for example and a growing "rival" -- CHINA.
did people realize that as the FedBank , US treasury, etc...are throwing and PRINTING MONEY to create "value and liquidity" backed up by NOTHING - in the TRILLIONS of dollars to "save the system" -- the bankers, etc...-- and giving what will LIKELY amount to a TOKEN "salvage" to the masses to pacify them - while STILL leaving them enslaved to those that THEY are asked to BAIL OUT (the finance industry that concocted all these schemes of many decades) --
while the USA - for example threw at least 600 billion dollars to banks (with more coming) so that the banks can "start lending again" (which OF COURSE means the SAME OLD games played on people who are asked to bail out the GAMERS over them) --
China decided to throw 600 Billion dollars -- NOT to the big players -- but to what is called "the interior" of china because it is lagging economically ?.
THAT"S real investing in people. they are taking a big risk ...some would say -- but what is "big governmnent" for if not for the larger segment of society that NEEDS it? rather than bailing out the CULPRITS?.
-- incidentally -- that ALSO means that china - for spending about a fifth of its budget on THIS program for the "interior" to get it up to snuff with the more industrialized eastern coast - will be more wary of continuing to LEND the USA the same 600 billion by buying up US treasury notes that are proving to be UNRELIABLE because of the collapse .
so -- where does the USA GET that money for ITS "bail outs"?
PRINT MONEY 24 hours a day of course...........
money which actually is another stage of the SAME thing that has brought the collapse -
MAKE BELIEVE WEALTH backed up by NOTHING!
but backed up instead by MORE DEBT .
it is what is called "DEBT CAPITALISM".
but then -- capitalism - being nothing more than MONEY "capital" taking over the natural rights of labor capital and REAL capital (such as gold, oil, natural resources, human resources, etc.) -- was BOUND TO ARRIVE at such a stage of DEBT CAPITALISM.
and according to world economists -- the USA is now , through its own schemes of "derivative" wealth -- make believe wealth, that is, -- about 50 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt to foreign bankers, creditors, and sovereign wealth funds.
THAT in comparison with the REAL value of the US economy standing at 14/15 TRILLION dollars.
that means the USA is over its head by at least 35 TRILLION dollars .
don't these same bankers (the very industry from the beginning of the US as an 'economy of free markets' that brought all to bear as it stands right now) --
demand from a person ALL his belongings if he so much as goes into arears in paying "loans"?
and for whatever else it means or reflects, here's another little fact:
Chinese parents --the makers of cheap goods that the american consumer loves to buy to be able to feel "rich" - save their money or forgo comforts in order to buy something for their kids .
while americans buy , usually by means of their "good credit" in a "credit driven" society (as if being in GOOD DEBT STANDING is something more honorable than being in BAD debt standing -- even if both are in DEBT) -- plasma tv's, the biggest cars, the toys with the most bells and whistles while remaining the most "technology infused but least informed" people on the planet --
chinese parents are saving their money to be able to buy for their children:
PIANOs so the kids could learn how to play -- and undergo strict training, whatever their futures else will be.
36 million chinese children bringing with them a highly disciplined art form as their background to anything else they accomplish in life.
6 million American children do that...
THESE things have consequences in the future.
They always show the money presses busy on TV whenever they talk about the bailouts... but nobody seems to know how much new currency has been printed this year so far.
Last year only around 800 billion US in the world and about halve that is circulating in the USA... So one bank bailout is equal to all the US money in the World and that is just about one tenth of what has been promised to inject into the system so far.....
So far it is just a pyramid scam.
It is gonna take more than all the liberals to solve this It is gonna take the Right wing and Left wing together because the middle doesn't have a clue.
If they printed just a trillion bucks, inflation would go up as fast as the deficit... we are in big Deep shit and this is just the beginning. It is time to renounce the crooks and kick em out of the temple. Jesus was right on!
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_actual_physical_currency_printed_by_the_Federal_Reserve_is_there_in_circulation
jim glover -- as i understand it -- reports outside the mainstream press say the "bail out" as OF NOW ONLY is really already around at least 3.5 TRILLION dollars.
and that it will easily rise UP to 8 -- EIGHT TRILLION dollars JUST to prevent the financial system from collapsing COMPLETELY!
and THAT is not talking about the after effects and other effects of the financial system's collapse UPON the "Main stream" market or economy.
THAT is the AMOUNT the Federal Bank is authorised to PRINT in PAPER wealth.
this is like the way Germany and japan PRINTED MONEY in their recession and depression years to "finance" themselves...and of course -- they made themselves "WAR ECONOMIES" with that financing - in order to get themselves OUT of their depressions and recessions which WERE brought about by CORPORATISM....
does it NOT RING A BELL in what has happened to the USA MILITARISTIC culture today?
who was it that said (was it Ludwig von Mises...an economist/historian/commentator?) --
a "WAR being the health of the economy"
REALLY means
"a TRANSFER of wealth FROM the larger population TO the PRIVATE coffers of the few".
It is at this moment that progressives should well heed in general the advice Machiavelli gave about politics and feelings. A cold hard look at the new situation is well advised.

Here are a few others we want to see:
--Medicare for all
--Pay off all student loans.
--legalize drugs and release non-violent drug offenders
--disband Blackwater and other private armies.
--ban lobbying
--publicly financed elections, IRV and proportional representation
--pay UN dues
--no foreign aid favoritism
--halve the military budget
--support organic farming
--fully fund Planned Parenthood
--Keep church and state separate
--bust the trusts or incorporate We the People for profit
--decentralized direct democracy by referendum
--cap personal net worth to decentralize power
--end the prison industry
--declare a war on war.
I'll sign on to this list. But student loans? I've always thought they were good building blocks for self-discipline. My daughter, raising two kids alone after dumping a dead-beat husband, got her degree and paid off her loans with no help from anyone.
wilmoor:my spouse, a hardworking person, was fired from his pure science research job when Ronald Reagan cut research funding and switched to college part time teaching and continuing getting his PhD. The graduate school teaching fellowship was not enough money to live on. While he supplemented income (and fed me while I was applying for social security disability which took a long time), he took school loans. I applaud your daughter. For every story like my spouse's there's thousands more. The interest on the school loans when it had to be deferred at times when it was not possible to pay for a few months, resulted in almost doubling the amount of the original loan. Hence, we cannot live long enough to pay off the school loan for the PhD, although the senior citizen is still working and happy to have a teaching job. "No help from anyone" does not apply to everyone and need not. I applaud the countries that give free cradle to grave education. You may not agree. I also point out that I went to college (and some graduate school credits) on the GIBill because my dad, a WWII enlistee was disabled, then died when I was in elementary school. I think everyone is entitled to an education. It's the basis of a democratic society to have informed people.
.It would be difficult to add to NYCa's definitive post on the subject of education. I would add only that any perusal of the industrialized nations quickly finds that most of them provide free education including college and graduate degrees. Heck, even a poor nation like Cuba provides universal health care and education, and accepts medical students free of charge from any nation on earth, th eonly proviso is that they must pledge to work among the poorest in their respective nations for two years after graduation.
An educated public only strengthens a democracy, perhaps that is precisely why we don't have such here?
.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.
Anais Nin
there was also a comment by some :
"we americans are the most technologically enriched nation on earth but the most poorly informed people".
Why should our children be saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans? That gives students from developed countries with free college education a big advantage. Wonder why our medical costs are so high? Why give billions to Wall Street Casino gamblers instead of toward education for our children? What's the better investment?
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, EZFLYER.
EDUCATION, LIKE HEALTH CARE OUGHT TO BE OUTRIGHT FREE. THAT'S WHAT TAXES ARE FOR.
================
BOTH ought to be ENTIRELY dismantled - and after a collapse of those industries -- THEN america and any other system that tries to follow its model in these things -- can SEE just how USELESS the people are that ply THAT TRADE - to an "economy" and see them for the TRUE PARASITES that THEY really are.
then -- those that will have to find a REAL job and creativity - will begin to understand what is the real meaning of "self-responsibility" and actually PRODUCING something creative and useful-- just like nurses, artists, musicians, engineers, etc.....
rather that making profit out of the NEED of others .
there is a classic story example of the banking and finance industry taking over the economy:
while most people actually PRODUCE something out of their talents and labor and abilities -- a weaver weaves, a musician learns and sings and performs or writes music, an engineer thinks of better bridges, a gardener discovers how worms work in a northern state compared to a southern farm, etc....
the people in the banking and finance industry actually DON"T PRODUCE ANYTHING of REAL WORTH..they merely TAKE OVER the power to DICTATE what is the PRICE of a farmer's labor, or a weaver's tapestry .
they are actually a fancy group of people who do NOTHING but somehow gain control of how an economy is supposed to RUN.
and it is reflected in the USA's UNQUESTIONING ATTACHMENT to something such as education "on college loans".
==============
AS Someone said :
"THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION IS ........TAXES".........
IF AN ECONOMY MUST BY ITS REALITY RUN ACCORDING TO "MONEY" -- THEN IT MEANS THERE IS A PRICE FOR SOMETHING.
IF THAT SOMETHING IS "CIVILIZATION" - THEN HOW DOES ONE PAY FOR IT AS AN ECONOMY -- RATHER THAN AN AGREGGATE OF "economic classes" between rich and poor? --
it is simple:
taxation.
taxation for the purpose of free education and free health care and even subsidized housing if necessary for anyone. ANYONE.
any talk about "those people are stealing MY money" is nonsense.
because people that "game the system" are by definition in reality -- the exceptions (while conservatives tried to make THEM representative of ANY one under a "socialized" education or health care).
but in REALITY -- the ones that are REALLY gaming a system which they have already RIGGED -- ARE the profiteering bankers..who -- as everyone can see - when THEY get into trouble -- suddenly are bailed out by the PEOPLE which they themselves exploited through various means -- such as throough the "privatized" school system -or privatized health care system.
AMERICA is the prime example in the history of the world in how a people gets ROBBED of its senses and lives - money, effort, sacrifices (all in the name of "free market and self-responsibility") --
by robber baron industries WHILE PAYING those industries and SUBSIDIZING those industries for the "honor" of being called "american" and the "privilege" of having "credit worthiness as an upstanding member of society"
WHILE doing all that for the HIGHEST "honor" of being ENSLAVED !!!!
what a MODEL of "civilization"........it's almost as laughable as it is TRAGICALLY FRIGHTENING because it is so REAL!
it's reasonable to say that it is a reflection of self-discipline to be able to pay off student loans PROVIDED the SYSTEM of economics ALSO provides STUDENTS carrying loans what is really a "full-employment" economy -- or as CLOSE to it as possible AND an economic system in which the knowledge and experience gained in going to school is REWARDED by a culture that actually VALUES people RATHER than spit them out as appendages of an economic system that is under the direction of corporatocracies which THEN , according to the NOW DISCREDITED "free market" economy, dictate what is "marketable".
when "students" - each being an individual -- try to gain their dreams as people -- and a system "supports" them by "loaning" them money for their education -- which LOANS come from PRIVATE corporations and bankers -- what is THAT, if NOT a WAY to PROFIT from the dreams of people -- who will then "enter" the "market place" that does NOT support their existence and "usefulness?"
aren't there MANY people with very high education but can't find jobs commensurate with their knowledge and abilities because the system is geared towards "finance" ? what happens if an artist can't pay for loans from a very expensive life-long career and development of knowledge because the CULTURE of "finance" and "profit" has NO ROOM for that person to get commensurate reward?
that person goes into unpaid debt - working as a waiter, an office job for which he is not suited....etc. etc. etc.
even the so-called "justice system" of the united states PROTECTS the interests of big businesses, insurance, banks, "fannie mae" and "freddi mac" IN THEIR PRIVATE PROFIT INTERESTS (long after their original purpose - to help poorer americans under a government program - and after they were made "private") - and the "small people" - are left to "answer" to the justice system and the demands of the profiteering "loaners". what kind of "justice" is that really? that's not even a REAL "free market" since the ordinary people that enter in debts with banks for their education also face LOWER WAGE VALUE realities DICTATED BY THESE VERY SAME BANKS and finance industry culprits - and THAT means the system and game is RIGGED.
"college loans?"
until one -- the dreams and chances and possibilities of ANOTHER human being becoming as full as possible and for his/her wellbeing - is gone...and what is left?
ENSLAVEMENT to the profiteers through compounded interests that can't be paid off by poorly paid jobs -- AS THE SYSTEM DICTATES.
in short -- EDUCATION at all levels OUGHT TO BE A UNIVERSAL RIGHT -- and government , through taxation, OUGHT to SPEND in support of that.
in ONE single week -- the war in iraq and wars and adventures of "empire" wastes in blood and money and time and effort and dreams -- TENS of BILLIONS of Dollars.
the pentagon and military industrial complex is what? something near 800 BILLION dollars to a trillion dollars a YEAR?
that is more than enough to make education COMPLETELY FREE for every american that WANTS to go to school for ANY dream!
it is a form of intellectual and moral corruption in a country that sees NO PROBLEM whatsoever to be a military empire --PAID FOR BY ORDINARY PEOPLE --
while taking a position , individually or collectively, that LOANS FOR COLLEGE AND EDUCATION at ANY level
is ACTUALLY ACCEPTABLE!!!
only in third world countries that DON"T have the national coffers for such amounts would that EVEN be acceptable , considering that they CAN'T even think THAT way.
but the USA? the most powerful and richest country ? CAN"T BE WILLING TO THINK the "unthinkable" --- that EDUCATION at ANY level OUGHT to be a NATIONAL NECESSITY and RIGHT to have -- for "free" and FREEDOM FROM LOANS from PROFITEERS?
even some very poor countries TRY to have national universities - even if they are choking with poverty -- JUST to have a semblance of "free education" - however LIMITED the number of people they can manage to cover.
do americans , politicians, corporations, bankers, have NO SHAME AT ALL?
people are "expected to be disciplined and responsible by paying back college loans".........
TO WHOM?
\
the PROFITEERS? who SHOULD NEVER have been ALLOWED to begin with to PLAY THE GAME of Profiteering on something that OUGHT to be EVERYONE's RIGHT!
a free education at ANY level if they are able to reach with their abilities and dedication to learning as high as they can.
it is the SAME with health care.
there are some things of national importance, of NATURAL importance for a decent life as a human being -- that PRIVATE INDUSTRY should NEVER be allowed to take over.
in education it is in the form of "college loans" from bankers. PERIOD.
in health care -- it is in the form of the "privatized - EMPLOYMENT BASED insurance" . PERIOD>
ezeflyer: I like several. I'd just leave Planned Parenthood alone and protect clinics. I don't think referendum has worked very well:e.g. big bucks have big advertising campaigns and have done some damage in some states. Ironically, in NYC, Mayor Bloomberg recently found a way around NYC's two (and rare) referendum(a) to have term limits, which the public overwhelmingly wanted. (I voted against term limits, but I support the majority's wish to have term limits.) I think monopolies should be cut back;I support net neutrality and public cable chanels. Fix the prison system:no slave labor, no harsh conditions, put education back into prisons, restore parole. End police brutality, political imprisonment (Mumia, Peltier should be out of prison, and a long list of others, check out "Where We Live", WBAI program, www.wbai.org), an independent prosecutor at state and/or federal level in police murder of civilians and end the death penalty. Regulation of: banks (put back regs), electric and power companies, etc. Free education: cradle to grave. Computers for all.
'Feeling' and 'Being' are not the same.
Will Washington be welcomed in the progressive world or the world at large?
The authors could actually go and interview people from various groups, instead of a Democratic strategist (who, I don't think represents any groups), but oops, the Los Angeles Times fired a lot of staff in its efforts to make the newspaper more profitable. So they can't spend a lot of time and staff talking to groups, who they might be thinking of as "liberal". Of course, they could save time on making a list by going to the government: which agencies have been "watching" peace groups (including Quakers) and death penalty peaceful "fighters" in Maryland?
How about the NYPD's list, and they have photos of people at peaceful demonstrations, folks they arrested pre-emptively and at peaceful protests just watching under orders from Mayor Bloomberg during the Republican National Convention in NYC in 2004. More recently, senior citizens and others holding a peaceful protest in front of the Mayor's Gracie Mansion to protest the Mayor's stacking the rent guidelines board with antirenters board members and the killing of rent regulations in NYC. Although the "city" has agreed in a recent court agreement, that came out of surveillance in alleged violation of their previous agreement about spying on peaceful dissenting people, to destroy the photos/video.
And, will someone please tell the city of DC and the feds before the peaceful protesters get out in the streets again, that it's ok to protest?
Ah, hope springs eternal in the human breast! But the real question is: have the forces of evil that controlled Washington and the Bush Presidency disappeared?
Have the corporation given up their greedy rationale? Have the Religious Fundamentalists finally decided that religion is poppycock? Have politicians decided to put their country first rather than themselves? Have the imperialists and the nationalists and the Zionists and the militarists had a Road to Damascus conversion and become altruistic humanitarians?
The answer is clearly: NO! There are many rotten apples still in the barrel that will continue to spoil everything for everyone.
P.S. America Will Control The World With Drones! WHAT? Read more. Where?

"And liberal groups already have an eye on the economic stimulus plan that the Obama administration and Congress will take up."
Exactly. 8.5 trillion is a lot of money. And if liberals think that all that money is only going to corporations then they stand to be pleasantly surprised. Because Obama is a progressive, even if he doesn't play one on TV. He spent years toiling as a community organizer, working on behalf of of the residents of Chicago's worst slums. Unlike Bush, Obama wasn't born with a silver spoon (or foot) in his mouth. He knows that liberal groups need assistance and he will provide it. The revolution is upon us. We will witness a great re-structuring of American society. There will finally be money for parks and bridges, for after school programs and childcare, for the environment, for hospitals, you name it. My hope is that so-called progressives don't cut the flower of change before it has blossomed. Love will guide us. Obama will lead us. We will follow, not behind him, but beside him.
And just to keep one step ahead of all you Obama-bashers out there (who think you are being oh-so-clever), I'm Joe Hope, not Joe Dope. Sorry to steal your thunder. I don't smoke dope. Never have. Never will. I wish I could say the same for the rest of you.
What a pompous wind bag. STFU.
At least you didn't call me, Joe Dope. Points for that.
.Joe, That some disparage you personally because they disagree with your opinions is sad. That it is a flaw common to both sides of our political world is truth. I do not condone such lack of polite debate but perhaps you yourself bring it on by posting naive and flowery expectations of the Obama Presidency backed by nothing whatsoever but your own expectations.
To gauge what this administration will do , especially at this time of assembling his administration, is hardly possible. But one might note with more than a bit of trepidation that his appointments are laden with the same old faces, those whose previous experience and actions at this level of politics shows plain enough that we may not expect progressive actions from them.
Hope and optimism are good things, but reality makes for more effective political actions. Should this administration prove to be a bastion of progressivism, one that restores and renews the social contract between our govt and our citizenry, one that shows genuine concern for the neediest among us, I will gladly admit to being skeptical and wrong. However, those in charge look to be the same old Wall Street and Corporate centered gang we have seen far too much of already.
.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.
Anais Nin
Let's be real- his "opinions" are thinly veiled insults and self aggrandizing statements. That is where the disparaging retorts come from.
.Yeah well, that doesn't mean we have to follow suit.
.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.
Anais Nin
Ardee -- there is some hope -- some writers have commented :
in that because the situation is so DIRE that EVEN these more "same old faces" will be FORCED by the situation to abandon the most fundamental things they believed in.
we have to see if that is so, otherwise they are TRULY nothing more than the "children of Milton Friedman" --the master of
"DISASTER CAPITALISM"....
in which DISASTERS -- man made and natural -- in this case the MANMADE disaster of the financial collapse of make believe wealth --
are USED as ANOTHER STEP to FURTHER their agendas of ever wider wealth gaps.........
and in short the INCREASE in their accumulation of wealth, profit and power.,
and that is of course - known - in its "state and corporate marriage" most clearly seen in the USA model today --
as
FASCISM.
.I,too, believe in optimism. But mine own brand thereof requires a sea change in our governance.Simply put, Barack Obama spent about six hundred million or so over a two year period getting elected. The great majority of that money came from precisely the corporations that we need to change direction in order to effect the necesary changes we seek. I don't like our chances there.
Edited for new information: NPR reported that the Obama campaign raised, over a two year period, seven hundred and fifty million dollars.....
.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.

Save the Constitution. Can the Patriot ACT.
I know how we can save billions of dollars right away.
Dismantle the Bush/Cheney right wing good old boy national spy programs.
They are their only to benefit the Republican party, spying on Democrats at tax payer expense.
You know, the programs that have no real suspects , just create them for the purpose of building this useless job market of Americans trashing each others the 4th amendment rights.
Stazi Police State, needs to be torn down for using torture gang stalking tactics on Americans.
Every one in Washington knows exactly what I am talking about, the truth will set us FREE and save us billions.

Get rid of the Federal Reserve and all other centralized banking schemes run by private bankers.
you know it;s so ironic -- your comment just reminded me of how, weeks ago, CHAIRMAN ALAN GREENSPAN -- the ORACLE of WALL STREET (as i liked to call him in discussions with friends) --
who for the past almost 3 decades "chaired" the free market capitalism dogma -- and from his devotion to the AYN RAND (the noted author of "atlas shrugged" and "fountainhead") - along with reagan who was his co-disciple, along with the late Milton Friedman of the notorious "Disaster capitalism" of Chicago School of Economics fame (with which OBAMA as close ties, by the way) --
Greenspan's "cameo role" appearance in the US congress some weeks ago to explain his thoughts about the current collapse elicited FROM HIM , after severe questioning by one - JUST ONE brave senator ( i forgot his name ) --
"CHAIRMAN GREENSPAN -- please answer me - just YES or NO -- none of the long explanations we are used to from you -- JUST YES OR NO: WERE YOU WRONG in your understanding of the power of the free market?"
his answer - after hemming and hawing:
"I was SHOCKED to REALIZE that there was a fundamental FLAW"........
oh really.............? you were SHOCKED? chairman greenspan?..........
wow -=!!!!
and can the bullshit war on drugs! The taxes on weed alone would help to quickly replenish the bare cupboards down at the Treasury.

everyone should check out the economy and system of FINLAND.
high taxation - comparably -- but free education, free healthcare, even subsidized housing. the BASIC elements of a society worthy of calling itself "decent". -- does it make their citizens "weak?"
"weaker than americans"?
absolutely NOT.
but they - in the last 2 decades happen to OWN about 1/3rd of the world's PATENTS in technology advances, including for instance those on the computers, cell-phones, etc...
WHY? their "students" are not saddled with being IN DEBT...but are FREE to become CREATIVE individuals that PRODUCE something for society.
one of their BIGGEST EXPORT earners -- did people know....?
are ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, WRITERS, NOVELISTS? because of such high standards they attain?>
HOW did their society achieve this ? by FREEING their 'students' to become HUMAN CREATORS-- rather than SLAVES to debt!!!!
and they are VERY proud of it.
i saw on TV a long interview with some of their industry leaders -- including a long one with the richest Finn - the one that started Nokia company...
and if i remember closely, this is what HE said:
"in our country -- we see nothing wrong with high taxation and progressive taxation. we consider it not only an obligation towards society ....but that the RICHER and more successful you are the MORE you should contribute . i am HAPPY to pay my share of taxes....i do not need more wealth.....what am i really going to do with it? ".
Bravo Teddy--The Scandanavian approach is worthy of study and application everywhere. John Taylor Gatto education essayist notes the following in his "Confederacy of Dunces":
*******************
"We have too much schooling, not too little. Hong Kong, with its short school year, whips Japan in every scientific or mathematical competition. Israel, with its long school year, can't keep up with Flemish Belgium, which has the shortest school year in the world.
Somebody's been lying to you. Sweden, a rich, healthy, and beautiful country, with a spectacular reputation for quality in everything, won't allow children to enter school before they're seven years old. The total length of Swedish schooling is nine years, not twelve, after which the average Swede runs circles around the over-schooled American. Why don't you know these things? To whose advantage is it that you don't?
When students enroll in a Swedish school, the authorities ask three questions: (l) Why do you want to go to this school? (2) What do you want to gain from the experience? (3) What are you interested in?
And they listen to the answers. Can you build a house or a boat? Can you grow food, make clothing, dig a well, sing a song (your own song, that is), make your own children happy, weave a whole life from the everyday world around you? No, you say, you can't? Then listen to me; you have no business with my kid."

Poet
Thank you teddy and poet. I thought sanity was dead. You two have made my day.
Thank you too Nietzsche .
actually i have been reading these forums for a number of years now and familiarized myself with several of you that are regular here and so -- it is I that has to thank you because i've been helped from reading to clarify for myself my own understanding of what is going on around us.
sometimes - i think that the fundamental problem in the USA is that it has gotten so powerful and rich under the notion that "there is NO alternative" to the "free market capitalism" because time and again -- after YET ANOTHER disastrous phase where wealth that was THOUGHT to be REAL was WIPED OUT DRAGGING DOWN WITH IT entire communities and populations (not just IN the usa) - a "rescue" comes around -- to yet cover up the FUNDAMENTALLY IMBALANCED and UNNATURAL system that has been designed -- unnatural in the sense that
the SEGMENTS of society that are ACTUALLY THE LEAST productive are the ones that BECOME the DICTATORS of what is "value".
but this is considered as the natural , normal order of things...this is supposed to be "the end of civilization" as a "former" NEOCON Francis Fukuyama declared in the early 1990's and becoming the DARLING of the neocons and conservatives and free marketers.
it was supposed to be the HIGHEST form of human civilization and it can't GO FURTHER - he declared - where everyone was now just a "consumer to be entertained" ..THAT was supposed to be NOBLE.
and i fear that it is EXACTLY what americans have ALLOWED their own nation and culture to become. and then WONDER WHY things are going SO WRONG -- as families become "two earner" families AND STILL can't keep up with things..........
SOMETHING is VERY , VERY wrong!!
there was something Benjamin Franklin predicted 2 centuries ago:
"This nation shall fall --- not because of foreign enemies or threats........real or imagined......but because the people are corrupt".
Poet -- thank you for the link and your own comments.
to BE SURE -- as we speak - changes and other circumstances surely must have occured that are no longer exactly as I understood what Finland was when i was looking up information about countries - i think, about 2 years ago.
maybe those basic principles on which their society seems to have been structured are still operative . but I was certainly surprised when i read information , explanations, checked out their governmental structures, the kinds of institutions they have...cultural mindset...and was quite shocked at how -- all these decades (at least the past 2 or 3) they have actually been quite STABLE without in the least giving up notions of "opportunity for individual freedom" nor a social cohesion that - at least in the modern world - can be defined as being close to a stable , benevolently ordered, balanced society -- or at least as close as one can see today. OR -- there is always a chance that I misunderstood what information i gathered. but - that's my opinion just the same.
some would say - "it's only working because they have a small population" -- but that is really, imo, an easy , pat answer in order to AVOID confronting the subject as to why certain structures are more stable while also being progressive - while others EXACT A PRICE upon their citizens and residents as well as those they "do business with" outside - SUCH AS is the case with the united states of america.
the link you provided is really informative -- thanks much for that.
over the years -- friends from scandinavia had explained a bit about their social systems: what i gathered in GENERAL terms were:
that from the swedish standpoint - and this was told to me by a lady who was highly cultured and lives in both USA and sweden -
"in sweden -- we tend to look DOWN upon unreasonably vast accumulation of wealth..we consider it a kind of barbarity in itself.."...
so i asked her daughter - who is a close friend of mine and she confirmed it...that they find it quite backward of the USA to still think in terms of vast gaps of wealth as being a "natural" thing...instead - to THEM -- having great wealth and a RESULTANT vast gaps in wealth among the population IS the aberration. and then i happened upon a long documentary in which the person considered as the TOP economist of sweden was giving interviews -- and HE explained and encouraged people to go to their websites (i forgot what it was called) -- to see what their economic policies are and why such and such --
and he gave examples one of which was about health care to bring home his point which was that a decent society can and ought NOT to leave everything to the "Free market" - but that it TAKES a CULTURAL mentality among people to intellectually and morally ACCEPT that this is the case if THEY WANT their society as a whole to be healthy.
so he gave as an example that while in sweden they ALLOW PRIVATE enterprise health care - to compete with government, public health care paid by their high taxes - the person always has a choice, like they say in the USA, to get treatment from a private provider but it's HIS or HER own expense completely. but the person can also FREELY move back and forth between that and the government provided ones. much like they say they are providing in the USA.
HOWEVER he explained that it is ASSUMED by everyone that having one-payer universal health care from cradle to grave -is not only the economically smart thing -- but the morally right one. so no one really thinks twice about it at all. it is just considered NATURAL . it is choosing a more expensive private industry treatment that is considered an ANOMALY.
------------
a norwegian friend told me also -when i asked her why she seemed to be taking her time with her college graduate courses in the USA - and traveling often - and they explained:
while it is a risk to finish later than sooner -- part of what they consider "education" is to travel , learn cultures, and if it means taking time OFF from "college credits" so be it -- and they are financed in part by stipends from the government with the understanding that when they finish or at some point they will be willing to "give back" some months or years of public service in their areas of knowledge. they accept it -- as part of the contract between themselves and their society.
or a woman who is pregnant has a fully paid pregnancy break of a few months -- MONTHS -- go to the bahamas if her doctor says that is where she can be healthiest. all paid by the government. no worries about how to put food on the table. the worry is to keep the mother healthy to take care of her baby.
americans will often say "well they can't keep that up they will collapse"
but they've been doing it for decades........and HAVE they collapsed?
WHICH ECONOMY has COLLAPSED if NOT the USA? and if the other countries that are closely tied financially in structures on a global scale to the USA -- THAT is how they were INFECTED by the what has started IN the USA!
everyone knows THAT now.
as the president Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he realized that his INITIAL efforts at government spending to put the US economy back from the depression -- that a RECESSION began BECAUSE his INITIAL PROGRAMS were TOO SMALL , RATHER than "too big"...to deal with a structural flaw (which comes down tothe same deregulation and resultant wealth gaps that led to the depression) --
as he said:
"WE HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN that GREED is BAD morals.......we NOW know that it is ALSO BAD ECONOMICS".
the real problem of the economy in the USA - centered as it is on the "finance" industry and its sister industries such as insurance, pharma, etc...- is that the s0-called "solutions" coming from the incoming and current administration -- now openly known as "socialism for the rich" anyway --
LOOKS at the recent blowups as a "crises" of "institutions" -- when in fact they are the RESULT of a LONG ON GOING CRISIS OF CAPITALISM and the dogma of "free market" ITSELF!!!
they are, in other words, NOT REALLY the CAUSE of the crises (cause being: "bad management, lack of accountability, lack of transparency - ironically enough being the accusation made by washington towards other countries, lol) --
but that they are really the RESULT of capitalism ITSELF!
in other words -- they were BOUND to happen BECAUSE of capitalism's NATURE.
La-dee-da, one group of bribing lobbyists being replaced by another. The first order of business ought to be what can be undone, rather than what can be done.
The Undo list should include for the first 100 Days should include:
Revocation of the USA Patriot Act
Revocation of the Military Comissions Act
Revocation of the FISA reforms.
Renunciation of Bush Adminstration "signing statements"
Closing prisons at Gitmo, Baghram, Abu Grahib, Diego Garcia, and the ships that sail to nowhere with their cargo of prisoners.
Deactivation of the 4th fleet.
Now that's change I can believe in.
Poet
frankly -- i suspect that will not happen.
it has been the course of history that POWER never gives up what it accumulates and the next one that succeeds to which power is handed down will only make "cosmetic" changes...or find other means of justifying the continued use of that power.
a lot of it, after all, is rooted in one overriding principle that is as "american as apple pie" but which until today is NEVER allowed to pass through the lips of politicians and leaders, and seldom , if ever, from so-called "liberals" or progressives themselves -- because they TOO are part of what it is to be american...and THAT american principle that goes UNSAID is:
EMPIRE.
IN THAT - is rooted everything else. unless that is renounced openly -- everything else will just be a different way of 'doing business'.
and america's PARTICULAR way of doing "the business of empire" (military backup for business empire) -
is through capitalism's "undless expansion".
how ELSE could it have been?.
with that comes all other things. wars of invasion, illegalities and crimes and lies that come with it, debt, death, destruction, corruption....torture, justice applied hypocritically for "some" and different for "others"....etc. etc. etc.
These are encouraging signals from the Obama Team, even though we still have to wait 50 days for his presidency.
Can't we have him sooner, please?
.Perhaps you might be urged to enumerate these "encouraging signals", I simply cannot find much optimism yet.

apart from the matter about the financial mess...and what to do or change in the american system -- if they even are going to go THAT far because that practically translates in principle to committing BLASPHEMY against the god Capitalism....(so - i see these huge bail outs as really just a VERY VERY expensive BANDAID for something that is STRUCTURALLY , fundamentally unsustainable and UNSTABLE - capitalism itself) --
there is the thing about what the new administration is going to do in US relations with other countries.
russia for instance, and china. there are MANY so0called progressives in the congress that HATE the idea of china becoming the PREMIERE ECONOMIC POWER in just a little over ten years...and have been gunning for making china the "new enemy"..but do you make an enemy of your own BANKER to whom you OWE?
russia -- there was a leaked document years ago -- on the internet and it disappeared - but it was a photocopy of internal PENTAGON documents from the 1990's when RUSSIA had collapsed and the western=tied oligarchs helped themselves to russia's national wealth and resources with lots of prodding from the US and european counterparts eager to carve up russia....
in that document - i remember reading: went something like this:
"russia is now SO WEAKENED , her military capabilities so deteriorated, and there is no effective government for years to foresee that it is NOW POSSIBLE TO CONSTRUCT Scenarios of a MASSIVE LAND INVASION".
i used to tell friends who laughed at me that RUSSIA and HER VAST, RICH, UNBELIEVABLY Varied Natural resources and that GREAT VAST REAL ESTATE -- is the GRAND PRIZE that the USA has ALWAYS lusted for since 150 years ago when it began to embark on a global imperial project.
and all one has to do is LOOK at WHICH country is trying to SURROUND the OTHER country.
as the CONSERVATIVE icon Patrick buchanan said -- for ONCE, CORRECTLY and wisely --
"we DIDN"T like it when russia was in OUR neighborhood ........so........what are WE doing in HER neighbhorhood?"
the ANSWER?
ENERGY, WATER, REAL ESTATE, VAST FORESTS, FISHERIES, the LARGEST natural Gas Reserves in the entire world....etc. etc. etc. etc.
PUTIN SAW RIGHT THROUGH IT ...and has made the moves to put a STOP to it ! THAT's why he has become "enemy number one" . not the terrorists -- they are just distractions used to ENHANCE the "necessity" for an ever greater MILITARY POLICE STATE corporate/finance fascism
masquerading as a "democracy"
as the famous proudly self-admitting FASCIST from the 1950's texas -- congressman Huey Long predicted:
"THE USA will one day become a FASCIST STATE........only they will call it a democracy".
this entire saga is really , imo, about
the most powerful, richest and prosperour country on earth
almost inevitably BECOMING a FASCIST state out of its own CAPITALIST NEED to "expand" into a global empire -- which of COURSE presupposes the CONQUEST - by military or non-military means - of VAST SOURCES OF ENERGY
to achieve what an AMERICAN GENERAL -- i think omar bradley -- or smedley butler ? -- confessed many years ago:
"the real purpose of our military is not for freedom or democracy or liberation -- it is to make the world SAFE for OUR cultural and resource exploitation by our businesses -- our foreign policy is really founded upon GATHERING AS MUCH OF THE WORLD's RICHES and RESOURCES to OURSELVES at the expense of those countries....through our military -- I was its ENFORCER".
I've always felt welcomed in a whore house, so whats new.
Yeah, this is gonna be great fun for liberals who HATE the Church with a passion. I'm very sure that part of the "non discrimination against gays" that will be made into law will be laws like they have in Canada. Laws where if a priest says that homosexuality is called a sin in the Bible, that priest will go to jail. Possibly lose his parish (we'll see just how far Rome lets the liberals go with this) by having it confiscated and turned into a gay night club (liberals are very vengeful people)
My advice to all orthodox and faithful Catholics left in this country, which is about 1% of all Catholics here -- pray for the grace to endure the martyrdom which is surely coming. Their day is here and now in their hatred of the Church, the Nancy Pelosis of our government are going to get their revenge!
if "faithful catholics" , like "faithful" protestants who are at the core of the conservative movement seem so focused on what is in fact merely ONE view of religion in this world , no matter how strongly and "faithfully" they attest to it (just as muslims, buddhists, hindus, etc. attest to theirs) -
it's AMAZING that the religion of "faithful catholics" and so-called christians ....cling to specially chosen subjects of contention such as hom osexuality, abortion , prostitution,
and THEN EQUATE THAT through some AMAZING LEAP OF FAITH and intellectual shallowness -- with "being unamerican, hating america".........along with calling it the usual conservatives' way : "liberal" as their all-purpose word for "evil".
the FUNNY and IRONIC thing about this is :
it also seems that those that profess to be "conservative" -- who then equate themselves with being "faithful catholics" and "christians" --
also seem to be the MOST SUPPORTIVE of DEATH-DEALING.....as practiced by their own government and policies and economic way of life:
WARS , THE LARGEST MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX the world has ever seen FOMENTING AND PROFITEERING on famines, starvation, collapse of the environment created by policies of WAR and EXPLOITATION
and all of it in the NAME OF GOD that these "faithful catholics and christians" or their sympathizers adhere to !!
amazing!
"IT IS WITH GREAT SHAME AND SADNESS THAT I MUST SAY THAT THE GREATEST PURVEYOR OF VIOLENCE IN THE WORLD TODAY IS MY OWN GOVERNMENT" --------- DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
and for saying such things -- he was KILLED by a "patriotic" america that calls itself "christian".
in the 1950's - just after the second world war - with the USA being the world's celebrated "victor" and claiming all moral righteousness - american reporters scouted the globe for magazines like newsweek and time - seeking "adoring" and "praising" comments from world leaders and noted figures.
upon meeting Mahatma Gandhi in india who was of course famous --
a Time Magazine reporter asked him - obviously fishing for "compliments" and praise about the USA FROM the famous indian social leader. the exchange went:
"Mister Gandhi ...what can you say about america? what would you like to say you LIKE about america?"
GANDHI:
"I don't like your christians ...........they are so UNchristlike".
apparently certain christians of a certain nation NEVER GOT THE MESSAGE.......even if dr martin luther king, jr...DID. and BECAUSE of that HE was called UNAMERICAN!!!
as for conservatives and "faithful christians and catholics" calling anyone that DISAGREES with their viewpoints as being "liberal" ...or ":leftie" , or "commie" , or "america hating" , or "unpatriotic" or "unchristian"..........
THOSE HAVE BEEN TRIED to great success by the conservatives for DECADES --
but NEWS has come around -- THEY HAVE BEEN DISCREDITED...that's OLD NEWS NOW........because the CONSERVATIVES are the ONES that have practiced the MOST UNCHRISTIANLIKE behaviors of
:L:YING to get power, STEALING to become obscenely wealthy and causing untold suffering, both personally and spiritually and materially upon OTHERS because of the kinds of economic policies they espouse!
NO ONE BELIEVES CONSERVATIVES ANYMORE -- except THEMSELVES preaching to themselves! and THEY -- in reality -- are IN THE MINORITY! always have been but just managed to CON everyone else with FEAR MONGERING and HATRED and DIVISION
in order to get themselves INTO POWER so they can DICTATE their ways to everyone.
Conservatives really need to wake up -- YOU HAVE ALL BEEN DISCREDITED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD!!! from your own hypocritical spirituality {POSTURES -- to your WARS , to your EXPLOITATIVE economic policies and to your LIES and HATRED that seethes through your pores!
YOU ---- HAVE ---- BEEN ----- DISCREDITED folks!
Excuse me, sir, but you are the people who use the term "liberal" and it does have a certain connotation with it that is unavoidable -- i.e., pro-abortion, anti-religion, anti-life (pro-euthanasia), pro-homosexual "marriage" etc. These are political and moral facts.
I understand and share your outrage at those who have called themselves by the name "Christian" while sending men down into the mines to die of black lung for .05 a day while they lived in 50 room mansions. Nothing at all "Christian" about that. Nor is there anything "Christian" about exploiting 3rd world countries for their wealth and assassinating their leaders who opposed this to put in a puppet regime friendly to American corporate interests. This country is a "Christian nation" about as much as Hitler could be called a "good and practicing Catholic".
Anyone who is trying to follow the teachings of Christ has a very difficult road to walk in these days -- I can neither support nor advocate the military/industrial complex, war for money, corporate greed, and other policies which put $$$ before people. On the other hand, I am of a Faith which teaches a particular moral code, and abortion on demand violates that code. Hence, I cannot walk hand in hand with liberals who insist upon this and other moral behaviors which violate the moral commands of our Lord.
The best I can do is to voice my opinion and opposition, and try to be the best Catholic I can be in very trying times.
well , la di da, good for you that you care about unborn children and because of that - base your ENTIRE concept of who to "stand with" ....even if to some others the killing of unborn children because they are "unable to defend themselves" is morally as repugnant as the killing of BORN ALREADY children , by design or consequence of policies such as war, support of brutal dictators that are convenient friends "of the moment", etc...who suffer in their millions from poverty, famine, disease, starvation. etc....DUE to the same policies by people that
SOME people who call themselves christians have SUPPORTED BECAUSE of their own LIMITED agendas -- such as "the killing of unborn children".
there are PLENTY of so-called christians who profess that they won't stand for wars, etc....but because of their own clinging to a SINGLE ISSUE -- such as abortion - END UP becoming ENABLERS of the masters of DEATH whose actions, decisions and power and profiteering
CAUSE the deaths of millions from causes BEYOND abortion!
where does THAT place people like yourself?
in your devotion to "protecting" the unborn child from abortion -- there are PLENTY of people like YOU - who end up "standing with" the VERY PEOPLE who cause death and suffering -- if NOT BY ABORTION -- by OTHER MEANS - equally as Horrifying and Evil!
