McCain/Palin Campaign's End-Run Around Media
The McCain campaign is attempting to do something unheard of in the modern political era. It is not just running against the mainstream media, it is running around it.
This strategy is not so much expressed in McCain campaign manager
Steve Schmidt's declaration last week that the New York Times is "150
percent in the tank" for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama or the
media-bashing by several speakers at this month's Republican National
Convention. It's more about the GOP's continued sheltering of its vice
presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
She has yet to hold a major press conference 32 days after McCain announced her as his running mate - and that's not changing anytime soon. McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said Palin will do at least one news conference before election day. That could mean that the person who could potentially lead the free world will have done one national press conference before being sworn into office.
The Democratic vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden, has given more than 89 national and local interviews over roughly the same period of time.
Other than TV interviews with CBS anchor Katie Couric, ABC anchor Charlie Gibson and conservative Fox News commentator Sean Hannity, Palin hasn't engaged the press. The effort to shield her is so intense that when she met with foreign leaders in New York last week, the campaign initially would only allow photographers near her.
No favors
"I don't think the campaign is doing her any favors by not letting her answer any questions," said PBS political editor Judy Woodruff, who has covered politics for 30 years for CNN and PBS. "If she's elected vice president of the United States and were she to succeed to the presidency, she needs that interchange with journalists. The American people have a right to know what does she know and how does she think."
"The media needs to continue to say, every day, until she has a news conference, 'When is she going to have a news conference? Why isn't she having one?' I just find it astounding," Woodruff said. "I think the media has a responsibility to continue to point out that this is unlike any presidential or vice presidential candidate in memory. She has been more bottled up."
When television news outlets threatened not to run any images of her meeting with Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Tuesday unless reporters were allowed in as well, the campaign allowed CNN - which was providing the pool report for the event - inside. Briefly. According to the network, "CNN's producer and other photographers were allowed in the room for just 29 seconds."
'Free Sarah Palin'
Last week, The Chronicle began a "Free Sarah Palin" campaign on its Politics blog, documenting the continuing lack of access to the candidate. The effort was echoed by CNN host Campbell Brown, who called on "the McCain campaign to stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower that will wilt at any moment."
"This woman is from Alaska, for crying out loud. She is strong. She is tough. She is confident. And you claim she is ready to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. If that is the case, then end this chauvinistic treatment of her now. Allow her to show her stuff," Brown said. "Free Sarah Palin."
The real loser in this game of hide-the-candidate: voters. Palin was not well-known outside of conservative circles before the campaign chose her. Polls, including one taken by the Pew Research Center, taken over the past few days show that Palin's approval rating has dropped since she was nominated.
"The lack of access is potentially damaging in the eyes of the voter, because they are trying to get to know the candidate," said Paul Dimock, associate director of the nonpartisan Pew Research Center for People and the Press. Palin is especially vulnerable because voters know McCain, Obama and Biden better, he said.
"The McCain campaign has discovered it has a major problem," said Carol Jenkins, president of the Women's Media Center. "Increasingly, it has become clear that she doesn't have a grasp of the issues. If I were John McCain, I'd be doing the same thing with her."
No incentive
But Jenkins said the campaign doesn't have an incentive to give the media more Palin face time. "If there is anybody more despised than Congress, it's the media."
So what can the media do? Jenkins said they shouldn't have given in to the campaign's demands last week during Palin's New York visit. "At some point, the media has to stop cooperating with the campaign."
Friday, syndicated conservative columnist Kathleen Parker had seen enough of Palin - and called on her to withdraw.
"Palin's recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League," Parker wrote at the National Review Online.
"Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there's not much content there," Parker wrote. "If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself."
But other news executives say what the McCain campaign is doing is not that unusual.
"All politicians go through a stage where they want to minimize how much they are exposed to the media," said Paul Friedman, vice president of news at CBS, the network that scored one of the three major Palin interviews. He shrugged at what could be learned in a news conference that couldn't in a one-on-one interview. "I just don't think it is that cosmic of an issue. We'll see more of the candidates soon. Just wait for the debates."

Show AllIt's obvious Republican's aren't placing a whole lot of value on intelligence! First Bush now dimwit Sarah! I guess intelligence is for us elitist's who are Democrats. I read somewhere on line where she was actually Reverend Dobsons pick. McCain wanted Lieberman. This I can believe which is one of the many reasons I quit voting Republican years ago.
Somebody should ask her the meaning of "sovereignty" and see if she answers like Bush did.
Even Stevie Wonder can see she's nothing but a facade.
George Bush's "sovereignty."

Palin sounds very much like GW Bush. He doesn't know a thing about the world, cannot answer one single question he has not been prepared for, he is not interested in world affairs, sicence, history, name it.
The result is obvious: If GW Bush's real aim was to wreck the US as much as possible, then he really achieved a truly remarkable success. Image is down, economy is down, military is tied down in useless and costly wars, Americans are split into two fiercely opposing camps by the big divider. By now even corporations will be happy to get rid of him.
Bush shows what you get if you think it does not really matter who the President is as long as he caters to big money interests and big corporations. You also get a sense of how Palin would fare as VP or worse as President. You send a politician to Europe who honestly believes in creationism, they just think you are stupid and come from somewhere deep in the forest, that's it. They laugh about you or are shocked, but they do not take you serious.
Time is over when it didn't matter if the President of a country which wants to be the world leader, is not knowledgeable and experienced in world matters. The world does not anymore wait for the US, the US are already lagging behind in many aspects. For decades one lie that was consistently spread by agencies and corporatons was that Europe depends on the US to a degree that when the US gets a cough, Europe will be in bed with pneumonia. Now we know it is rather the opposite. The US economy is in tatters and Europe just has a cough. Wait until the ramifications of the WallStreet mismanagement hits the companies and the SMEs. How are you going to renew your infrastructure when all your cash is wasted by Wall Street and in useless wars ? Where will all the money come from.
The US is walking on a knife's edge and does not even know it.
Perfect for the brain-dead constituency within America.
Mount your dinosaurs! Into the fray!!!
I guess McCain thinks that women should be seen and not heard.
or is it beaten and not seen?

Biden's done 89 interviews and she's done one, but I'm always seeing articles about her in the paper, and never any about him. Why's that?
All publicity is good publicity.
She started out as a joke, became an attrocity, and now is morphing into a victim. Is it because no other Republican wanted the "honor" of being on the lower end of an obviously losing ticket? Is Governor Palin finally beginning to realize just how deep a pile of political do-do into which she has jumped? Or is she that deluded over the responsibilities of the office she seeks? Or is she assassination insurance against the terrrible possibility that McCain might win the election?
Whatever the answer, she has the potential of being the biggest embarassment of a vice presidential candidate since Admiral Willilam Stockdale was the Perot running mate in '92 or General Curtis LeMay was the running mate for George Wallace in '68. Palin's candidacy more than anything else shows clearly that the Republicans have conceded this election just like they did in '96 when they ran Bob Dole (Bob Dull would be more like it!)as their presidential candidate.
Poet
In spite of the lack of access Palin has had, how I really haven't seen 1 article about the "89" or so appearances Biden has made.
My advice to the media, report her lack of accessibility (remind the voters of the secrecy in the current administration) and her lack of depth; then get over it. Report about the policies and experience Biden is bringing to the table. He may have been around a long time, but we need to know what his current perspectives are today and how his "depth" is going to be of value (to the US) if he is VP.
It's pretty simple... report the news instead of the non-news.
jd
I'm waiting to see her Playboy pictorial before I decide what I think about her.
I have already decided what I think, but, I like your idea.
Eeuwwww! Now that's scary. Maybe it will be a special Halloween edition?
Let's face it: McCain was in a super dilemma by August. But he handled it like the morally and ethically corrupt narcissist that he is. He actually found a person--better yet, a woman--younger and far more attractive than he is; possibly more ethically challenged than he is; and, most importantly, who is actually dumber than he is! Of course, he could find such a person in the lower 48 but he found her. Isn't America great!
why do you insist on calling them journalists?.. they are now stenographers..the repeat what they read or hear.. they no not report anymore.
and why does every politic "respond" to questions rather than "answering" them..
and why does no one say " that's not an answer, please answer the question?"..
because they are stenographers.. they only repeat what is written or heard.
now they think more about hair and beauty products , can't look good on tv without them, than the real issues...
Good point.
Here's the thing. The press abdicated their role as agitator and defender of the people ever since Watergate. It's generalizing but the roller-coaster ride is on the down swing.
This is what we're up against. The precedent has been set that the media is a commercial PR machine. The republicans accuse it of being liberal. The democrats are weak willed. And the media itself has just played the role of citizen advocates as fictional characters on TV.
Now that it's time for them to do their actual job, they're shocked to find themselves disenfranchised. They realize their emperor's clothing is nonexistent. But now that they see the truth, they should fight for our lives. They must simply endure the criticism and go for the jugulars of all the candidates. That's why the framers wrote the first amendment.
That's why a free press is in the same sentence as the right of the people to redress the government for grievances. The framers saw a free press and government dissidence as THE SAME THING. Like sugar and sweetness. One without the other is useless.
So step up writers, bloggers, journalists. Whether on your laptop, Commondreams, at the Nation, PBS, or CNBC. We're all in this together.
It's obvious Sarah Palin is incompetent, uninformed and ignorant. That's why she is being kept in a cocoon. To reporters: Don't you dare ask her any hard questions, you meanies. Keep it light and fluffy like her.
I now know why I left the USA for GOOD.Who in their right mind can live in such an insane country. The picking of Palin unfortunately epitimizes the mentality of the majority of Americans. No doubt in this election they will pick the most inept, mentally challenged dim witted fruit cake that is running in this election (WAR HERO TRAITOR McCain and PISTOL PACKING MAMA Palin). All the average American cares about is hanging his flag on the porch and knowing that GOD is on their side when it comes to war and pillaging other countries for their resources.Oh yes and I forgot, the belief that GOD is definitely American.Sleep well and safe in your beds at night from those awful terrorists who are definitely out to get you.The trouble is the terrorists are in the WHITE HOUSE and running WALL STREET.For those of you with half a brain get out while you still can, nothing is going to change, and before you know it you will be at war with half the civilized world, and the doors will no longer be open.
It's clear that most people with functioning brains are not enamored of Ms. Sarah. I can't imagine why any presidential candidate would have even considered her in the first place!!! There are too many serious problems in our country and our world for us to be playing political games in the selection of leaders.
If John McCain even remotely thinks that Ms. Sarah is ca[able of being president
then he needs to be settles into a nice home for the elderly demented - tomorrow!
(trust me I konw whereof I speak - I helped to care for my Mother and her Mother who succembewd to Alzheimer's disease - and John is exhibiting the first signs)

I agree entirely! I too cared for a mother with Alzheimers. McPain is definitely going in that direction. Additionally his PTSD symptoms are likely to get worse than they already are!!
So we have a demented, angry, impulsive old man and an air head fluffy with very scary & superstitious notions about religion and the world. We should all be very very afraid! . . . and work very hard to make sure the dems win.
The mere fact that she is a candidate for #2 and nobody is permitted to question her? Bullshit the Rovian tactics of McInsanes campaign are crystal. Why in hell has religion entered in a mad crazy way in a Presidential campaign? Damn right, End Times. Of the Constitution, being free to roam in MY country while exercising my First without getting jacked by Active Duty Troops just because....
What happened, I was actually protesting all if this intrusion and I am still asking, What the F$$K happened? Damn....

That this woman could be elected as VP of the US is the most frightening possibility I can imagine. McCain did her no favor placing her on a national ticket. When I hear her speak, she sounds like a kindergarten teacher reading a story to a class of 5 year olds. I suspect that is the limit of her knowledge as well. Hopefully, the prospect of a Sarah Palin VP will drive out all the voters who think their vote doesn't count and they will help create a landslide Obama/Biden victory.
This is consistent with the highly secretive Republicans.
I saw an extra two interviews of her on Saturday Night Live, but she didn’t look quite like her on those two occasions!
To many voters it doesn’t matter what she knows or how she thinks. After all, what did the voters do with Bush after they got to know what he knows and how he thinks? They voted for him as a beer-drinking buddy—twice!
I would much rather drink beer with her. I’m a 78-year-old dirty old man.
This is a false issue. Neither the president nor the vice president make the policies. The government's function is to ensure that the wealth of the nation created by the workers is transfered upward into the pockets of the oligarchs. Who cares how unfit Palin is, how fit was Bush and what have the Dims done about it?
The office of president is largely ceremonial. The PTB (powers that be) make the policies and it is the job of the two mainstream parties to carry them out like glorified errand boys.
Ric Abreu: The office of president is largely ceremonial? If that's the case, he's a pretty influential stuffed-shirt...or is that BULLY? How do you explain the Bush-lead war in Iraq? The Bush-lead tax cuts to the upper 2%? How do you explain two of the most right-wing appointees to the Supreme Court? How do you explain Bush at 90% approval rating right after 9/11 and no active plan to capture/kill bin Laden since then? How do you explain a $200 billion givernment surplus in 2001 becoming a $600+ billion liability today? How do you explain acceptance of torture and rendering officially sanctioned for the first time in U.S. history? How do you explain searching/bugging American citizens without a warrant? There a way more to mention but these would not have become reality without this "largely ceremonial" president leading the way. To our misfortune, many took his experience as Texas governor--which IS largely ceremonial--as qualification to become President (aside from him being son of Bush 41, an average president, at best). Even as the eunuch-governor of Texas he managed to execute more inmates than any other governor of modern times; to me an early sign of a cold-hearted sociopath.
What's more, your second paragraph contradicts itself. If being president is a ceremonial position you say the powers-that-be (through his administration?), make policies that the two mainstream parties (of Congress, I suppose) carry out "like glorified errand boys." Does NOT compute to me. Such reasoning, if not actually stupid, is distorted at best. It's writing like yours that prove the dumbing down of Americans. Intelligent, reasoned critical thinking today is in very short supply.
Sometimes when you’re lucky and you get an intelligent, knowledgeable president with a strong character you can blame him for his mistakes, and chances are he wouldn’t make many. Bush, however, is not that president. He’s just a front man for the powers-that-be (PTB). Yes, he and his close circle of cronies and advisors may be allowed to make some small decisions such as torture, rendition, and the like.
As a president of the US, if you do not kowtow to the PTB, they just bump you off, like they did JFK and MLK. However, the PTB try not to choose for you a man of character to vote for, lest they may have to kill him later. If the PTB didn’t like what Bush was doing, they would have first tried to stop him by Congress, and if that didn’t work__KILL.
Sure, if Americans were as intelligent as you think they are Bush would never have become the president - twice. The PTB make the policies that will enrich them like the current "financial crisis" where the elites claim they need S800,000,000,000.00 to bail them out and then the president and the political parties come to the rescue.
Everything you mentioned Bush did and the the Democrats did nothing about was done for someone's benefit. That someone being Big Business, Big Oil, the Military Industrial Complex and the oligarchy. They create the policies that will enrich them and the Dem/Pugs carry it out.
What is it you cannot compute? Is it the part about the corporations, the wealthy and powerful running our government or is it the part about the government being the two mainstream political parties?
Or do you still think "We the People" are running this thing? If that were true the bankers wouldn't get bailed out with their golden parachutes, we would have single payer, Bush would be impeached and the wars/occupations would have never happened.
Sorry, I'll return the favor, if you cannot compute this you are the stupid one my friend.
You silly CD posters sure don't know much about marketing, do you? Let's start with the 5 P's of marketing:
Product
Packaging
Promotion
Placement
Price
Keeping Palin away from the press does not impair any of those principles. The "Promotion" part will be campaign ads, controlled by the campaign. Meanwhile, the convention allowed the definition of "Placement", and to a large degree, "Product". Most guys will tell you the "Packaging" is A-OK. What is being concealed is the "Price". Methinks most of you believe that it will be very, very high in terms of civil liberties and the upward distribution of wealth.
I think you're right.
Election fraud. The cat is in the bag. There is no need for Palin to speak w/ anyone.
Don't be insulting.
Sarah Alaska
Sarah Alaska jump into the stew
sticks and carrots are good for you
they're good for the bull and good for the bear
they're good for the clout and good for the few
they’re good for the republican well to do
so Sarah Alaska here’s a banana for you
Save that banana for the republic to be
it’s ripe and low hangin
like the balls of a moose that’s stuck
or a pale prodded bear just across the strait
So jump into the candidate stew Sarah
Be thankful you're part of the chosen too
Sarah
like the testy fallen Johnny angel flier
who can take the heat
and zap the many for the few
to add some spice and the Lieberman beat
a hearty blood red flavored tuber
for a stew that’s truly great
A banana republic stew
You can nuke the left overs too
So Sarah Alaska jump into the stew
a stick for the many
a carrot for you
a stone for the soup

Nice slice of empirePie, a la mode.
Often facts -- objective, relatively irrefutable facts -- are unavailable, very difficult to find, irrelevant, or much too complicated to interpret unambiguously. But "Joe Biden, has given more than 89 national and local interviews over roughly the same period of time," doesn't have any of these weaknesses.
If this fact and comparable data on the last dozen or so campaigns were widely presented to the American people, I think the results would be dramatic. Of course someone would have to do the research (not difficult for a news organization), and the MSM would have to publicize it. Surely the MSM has thought about this and, apparently, decided not to proceed.
How can anyone have trust in, or respect for, this absolutely vital, but corporate-controlled and corrupt, industry?
TLS
Ironic that third party candidates are getting the 100 PERCENT blow off while this silly ass, Palin, is creating a feeding frenzy of dumb and dumber journalists. Rosa Clemente will NEVER get a chance to debate--but imagine what that would be like! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmBrj1PRgkU
Or Matt Gonzalez, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1w1Os8y5qk
End this corporate fraud, end the lack of freedom, the lack of debate. This sickness will burst like a fever, an explosion of voices from all of us who remain unrepresented by corporate thugs and poseurs.
"Power concedes nothing without a demand."
A pig in a poke.
With lipstick! ;)
How sexist! :)
Though Palin is a troglodyte, she has two issues in her favor:
She is against gun control and we may need to arm ourselves. The way things are going, who else is going to defend us from the Praetorian guard and from starving hordes?
She gives Alaskans a (token) dividend from their oil revenues. We should all be receiving dividends from the lease or sale of our public treasure.
Sarah Palin AKA known as Cruella has no qualms about shooting Bambi's mother. She wasn't "Miss Alaska," either; she was a runner-up. She's only popular with Alaskans because she bribed.......er, made it possible for them to have an extra $1,200 in addition to the Permanent Fund.
Now she says she just can't wait to debate with Joe Biden and to get even for people saying McAncient is old, she said she used to hear Joe Biden's speeches when she was in the 2nd grade. Gee, I had no idea 2nd graders were so politically aware. Let's hope Mr. Biden doesn't bend over backward to be nice to the female opposition during the debate.
If she's been listening to political speeches since the second grade, she hasn't learned a fucking thing!
It's kind of like when you're at the bar and it's almost closing time. You've had a few drinks, the lights are low and the woman at the end of the bar starts to look pretty good. You take her home, but as the bright sunshine streams through the window the next morning, you see her lipstick has been smeared off and you realize that she isn't the beauty you thought she was the night before. It is at that moment you begin to regret your impulsive action of inviting her to your bed. This must be how John McCain feels about now.
I love that analogy!
remeber that old joke:
the drunk goes home with the best-looking girl in the bar and wakes up with the worst-looking...
i think Palin is one of the most cynical candidates ever put forward but, c'mon Cavedweller, this comment is inappropriate on so many levels. and no, it's not my absent sense of humor, just that we're better than this.
"That could mean that the person who could potentially lead the free world will have done one national press conference before being sworn into office."
The suggestion that the next dictator of the US will lead the free world is an insult to the free world.

Hey Media . . . . Pay attention . . . .
If you want access to candidates then go see the third party candidates.
Do the voters a service for a change. Report on something worth while. You'd be surprised how fast the Democrats and Republicans will come around if you gave time to the "OTHER" candidates.
But then that would require actually doing something . . .
Sarah Palin tough on moose, wolf and varmint hunting, weak on press conferences.
Palin's supporters don't care if she cain't talk. All they cares about is she's an NRAer, don't like no gays or baby killers and can shoot moose. Plus, that dang 'ole liberal media is out to get her.
About the hunting issue... Just about anybody can shoot something. It's a lot harder to actually hunt something, which I'm sure she's never done. If she's ever shot a moose or any animal, someone guided her to it and she just pulled the trigger, sort of like what cheney did but without the target being humanoid.
She is a damn aerial rifleman that sits aloft a chopper with wolves and bear in the crosshairs and blantantly murders them! Hunter my ass. She is too with the Nuh Uh nobodys touching my homeland of Israel or we'll Nuke 'Em.
BillofRights
No, they fly her over it so she can shoot it :-)
Ah, Russian moose...
You've got that right. Sarah Palin isn't going to go out in the woods like a real Alaskan (she has Idaho roots). She'd rather hop on a convenient helicopter, shoot the easy targets, skin it (how she loves the blood and gore --- and war), then rush home to be warm and cozy in front of the fireplace. Like all Rethuglicans, she just pretends she's tough.
Unfortunately, this general critique must be leveled at both parties. I've been to two Obama campaign events (as a camera man), hoping there might be segments where the candidate goes off script. Yesterday, he did, responding to the failed bailout situation. One senior reporter earlier complained that he remembers the times when each campaign stop meant an opportunity for the press or attendees to get questions answered. No more.
The parties try to put the lid on and control everything so it goes according to their script.

Let's elect Obama and support Progressive Democrats of America http://pdamerica.org to convince him that progressive policies make sense and resonate with people's ultimate desire for peace, sustainability, and responsible economics.
Products succeed when they are promoted by good advertising campaigns and product placement. To date the McCain campaign has brilliantly choreographed all of Palin's appearances and the press has fallen in line to the extent that they over-hyped her homecoming to Alaska after the convention while ignoring the Anti-Palin rally in Anchorage that was the biggest rally in the history of Alaska.
Judy Woodruff's comment about Palin needing to talk to journalists if she becomes president is soooo old paradigm. Palin will simply continue to accuse the "liberal" media of being biased against her and ignore them.
