Nader, Donahue Bring Star Power To Fighting Bob Fest
WISCONSIN - Speakers at the seventh annual Fighting Bob Fest held nothing back Saturday, urging a crowd of 10,000 at the Sauk County Fairgrounds to take action before this fall's presidential election.
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader gave a biting speech to kick off the morning's events. He targeted what he called, "least, worst" voters, or voters who he says cannot tolerate another four years of a Republican as president.
"The question is whether or not we get a Republican in disguise," Nader said, referring to Democrat Barack Obama.
"We're seeing similar parties." Nader said. "Measure the Democratic control of Congress and ask how much of Bush's legislature have they rolled back? Have they even tried to impeach?"
To the cheers of the audience, he praised Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold for introducing legislature to censure President Bush, and called Bush the "most impeachable president in American history."
Nader said President Harry Truman first laid down an example for affordable health care, and European nations achieved health care, labor and trade reforms shortly after World War II because of strong political lobbying.
"The two parties, for 63 years, have yet to get that done. How many more votes are we going to give them?" Nader said.
Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney spoke next. She called herself a "black woman who dares to dissent in a world that does not allow it."
"Fighting Bob fought for workers, though the Democrats or Republicans have not mentioned NAFTA, or a living wage. I want a national living wage," McKinney said.
After a lunch break, a parade and a series of individualized sessions to discuss various political issues, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, a Milwaukee Democrat, energetically offered progressive viewpoints in expressing support for Obama.
Speaking about the tradition of Wisconsin and Robert M. La Follette, the festival's namesake, Moore called Wisconsin a purple state - but warned the state's color could change due to inaction.
"We just barely escaped the humiliation of voting in George W. Bush," Moore said. "You better get on the ball and make sure our state doesn't go red."
Moore said, "I know you all might have [conflicts] with Barack Obama. He might not be perfect, but now's the time to unite."
Arvonne Fraser, a womens-rights advocate and co-founder of the Humphrey Institute Center on Women and Public Policy, spoke after Moore, Wisconsin's first black woman to be elected to the House of Representatives. Fraser directed her comments to some of the women in the audience.
She called Republican John McCain's nominee for vice president, Sarah Palin, "an insult to the thinking American public.
"Don't let friends who just want a woman in office make a huge mistake," Fraser said.
The event's keynote speaker talk-show host Phil Donahue, continued an anti-war conversation and spoke specifically on the Iraq war and media reform.
On Friday, he was in Madison for a screening for his latest film "Body of War." The movie, by Donahue and veteran filmmaker Ellen Spiro, tells the story of a veteran who was shot through the spinal cord and paralyzed from the chest down after spending five days of service in Iraq. The veteran, 25-year-old Tomas Young, went on to become involved in the Iraq Veterans Against the War organization.
"But you don't see them on corporate media - you don't see groups like Peace Now, or U.S. Veterans Against the War. You'll see the lobbyists," Donahue said.
He urged Bob Fest attendees to become active in politics, to vote and try to "change things.
"We spend too much on war," Donahue said. "You don't get a statue in the park for fixing health care - you get a statue for going to war. Children are playing on cannons in parks all across America. We're dropping bombs at night where old people are sleeping and we're watching it on CNN.
"I think we can change America and make this happen. A good piece of the Wisconsin delegation stood up and said no [to the war]."
Festival founder and organizer Ed Garvey estimated 10,000 people attended throughout the day. The festival is co-sponsored by The Capital Times and fightingbob.com.
Additional speakers at Saturday's event included former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter, The Progressive Magazine editor Matt Rothschild, national radio commentator Jim Hightower and environmentalist Bill McKibben.

I’ll say it again…
We needed Ralph Nader as President in 2000.
We needed Ralph Nader as President in 2004.
We NEED Ralph Nader as President in 2008.
Never before as we do now

The Ron Paul announcement will be Tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept 10th at the National Press Ciub.
.
I can't begin to tell you all how pleased I am to see this happening!
Kudos to Ron Paul!!!
Not to mention, Paul supports local farms and legalizing raw milk. Ron Paul truly cares about the health and well-being of citizens and he even made it clear on a post of his that reducing factory farming and bringing back grass fed meat and diary actually reduces global warming.
Paul made his living (before politics) as an Obstetrician, so of course he is interested in healthy babies and raising children on a healthy diet, as well as preserving traditional family farming.
In most areas his philosophies mesh well with Dennis Kucinich. Their voting records prove it. And of course both have been marginalized and damaged by their respective political parties. (err... "the one party with two heads" as I've heard Ralph Nader put it).
How large IS the 3rd Party and Independent Movement, we all wonder. Maybe this development will make it visible to us as well as others.

Very impressive line-up of speakers. Deserves a better written, more complete story.
This is the first time I have seen Ralph's name mentioned in a CD article in a very long time. Let alone actually made a part of a headline. Sad.
Yay Wisconsin! My home state ROCKS. I'm living in NC now, and if it weren't a battleground state, I'd vote for McKinney. But I'm not going to live through another 4 years of GOP rule. Sorry.
I'm as idealistic as the next gal, and know exactly what's wrong with the Dems, Obama, and corporate America. I just know that there will be a very real difference for me, my family, and all the working people I know if Barack Obama is elected instead of Grampy McSame and Caribou Barbie.
If my state were solid blue or solid red, I could vote my heart. But NC is in play (thank you Jesus!) and I'm gonna do what I can to shift momentum in this country away from fascism. We can get more progressive if Obama is in there, but if McSame & Palin get in the White House, it's fascism as far as the eye can see.
North Carolina is NOT in play! McCain will win there.

Click on North Carolina.
This map is not updated every day, but it looks at the electoral situation, state by state, something the Gallup poll does not. As of August 22, North Carolina is very much in play.

The Gallup poll just calls at least 1000 U.S. adults, nationwide.

Events like this one in Wisconsin are a reminder that not so long ago the midwest was a regional bastion for unabashedly progressive politics, and not without vicious assault from the media barons of that era. On my bedroom wall I have an old framed cartoon clipped from the Chicago Tribune during FDR's first term, which savagely attacked the "Red Communist schemers" (drawn to look like weasles, with disturbing Semetic nasal features) who had supposedly "highjacked" the state Democratic parties of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The relentless, highly successful assault by big corporations upon the US labor union movement (culminating in the Reagan era) lies at the heart of what's gone wrong with the two party system, marginalizing the progressive wing of the Democratic Party at the national level. Neutralize the electoral clout, and the politicians of both parties ignore the legitimacy of the working class issues, and the need for a viable social safety net.
If Barack Obama wants to reach out, broaden the base, and restore hope for change in the American political system, his time would be far better spent at public gatherings like this one rather than bobbing and weaving around at Saddleback Church, or subjecting himself to open ridicule by the likes of Bill O'Reilly.

"...or subjecting himself to open ridicule by the likes of Bill O'Reilly."
Agreed. Democratic leaders should shun FOX, just like the Bush 'spokespeople' shun Helen Thomas. Anyone stupid enough to watch FOX, screw 'em, we don't need their vote. The Democrats have been bringing wiffleball bats to the hardball game for much too long now. FOX is the Izvestia of the Republican Party, and that point should be driven home to American viewers, every day. Rupert Murdoch should be shunned in all his evil forms - good riddance to his friend Hillary.

'She called herself a "black woman who dares to dissent in a world that does not allow it."'
The "does not allow it" part is what gets me. Are we going to kick some "allow it" into the battlements of oppression this fall, people?
Problem is not even Nader and McKinney are calling for redistribution of ownership and control of production to the people. Electing the current crop of progressives will be a baby step toward full emancipation of the people from their slavery to elites.
YES, THAT IS A PROBLEM, THERE IS NO LEFT IN THIS COUNTRY BUT WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE.
YES !!! I wish the Independent candidates would just team up as one party as the two-party duopoly needs to be SHUT DOWN already !
This festival represents true heart of America, as well as the backbone. Too bad the brains that run the country are filled with greed and hatred.

"'But you don't see them on corporate media - you don't see groups like Peace Now, or U.S. Veterans Against the War. You'll see the lobbyists,' Donahue said."
Thus Donahue states the number one challenge facing the Progressive movement in the US: gaining meaningful access to the mainstream media.
q
Stop worrying about the corporate (i.e. mainstream) media. We simply have to create a progressive majority with a progressive media of our own, like it or not. And yes, it is hard work.
I sure wish I had been at this festival! btw, I sure hope everybody will see "Body Of War" on DVD if you havent' allready seen it in a movie theatre. It's the best picture of the year by far. Invite friends over to see it!!
