Ferguson Cops (Meant to Serve and Protect) To Media (Exercising Their First Amendment Rights): Get the F#/k Out of Here Or You'll Be Shot
Ferguson continues to implode, with the governor calling in the National Guard even as a chilling autopsy report finds that Mike Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head. Meanwhile, reporters trying to document a crisis born of "racial storytelling that has created all black men (as) dangerous" are likewise being maced, arrested and threatened just for being there. Jaw-dropping video of one such encounter, wherein pointing a finger and shining a light can get you shot. With an outraged John Oliver on the clueless political response of a curfew that "took a community tired of being treated like criminals, and imprisoned them all in their own houses for a night.”
On the historical context of Ferguson: "If you don’t say 'Michael Brown was shot and killed by an officer of the Ferguson, Missouri, police department,' then you don’t have to reckon with the entire history of police harassing, beating, terrorizing and killing black bodies. It’s to disconnect his story from Eric Garner, Ezell Ford, John Crawford, Rekia Boyd, Aiyanna Stanley-Jones, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo, Eleanor Bumpurs, Michael Stewart and so many more. It’s to say that what happened to Michael Brown isn’t a part of this country’s insistence on criminalizing black bodies. It erases the black codes, convict leasing, Jim Crow, lynching and all other forms of terror visited upon black people in the place they call home."
