No Date Rape Here, And If There Is We Don't Wanna Talk About It

No Date Rape Here, And If There Is We Don't Wanna Talk About It

Arguing it interferes with "the educational process, educational environment, and the rights of other students,” school officials in Wisconsin have come down hard on an excellent investigative piece in a Fond du Lac student newspaper on a prevailing rape culture within the school that often blames the victims of sexual abuse. Following publication of the story, which tells the stories of three anonymous rape victims and includes resources for survivors, the school issued new guidelines giving veto power to Principal Jon Wiltzius, who argued his job is "to oversee the global impact of everything that occurs within our school" and he'd prefer stories that "bring people together.” The story's furious author - and the paper's editor - fired back: “This story is not false, defamatory, libelous, vulgar, or profane, unless you view survivors of horrendous atrocities speaking out against a culture that oppresses them as profane or vulgar." Other students made equally great points: "We are the people that can explain rape isn’t OK,” "We did exactly what any newsroom would do - we had serious discussions about the article before it ran," “There have been stories on bomb threats, school store theft, drug dealers in school, a gay student coming out, and none of those rose a red flag. This story actually helped people, so I am confused,” and "We are the students that know what is happening, what is going on (at the school). We are the voice. If they censor it, we don’t have a voice.” Smart kids, dumb adults. There's a petition.

Linda Selk-Yerges, executive director of a local sexual assault victims advocacy organization, citing statistics showing that one out of four females and one out of six males are sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday: "This is not fiction, this is real...It's part of the high school student's world. To deny that is to deny the reality of the world students live in."

Only 46% of surveyed students believe that sexual abuse or harassment is an issue at Fond du Lac High School, but 80% of them have heard a rape joke in the past month. That’s the rape joke. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexualy assaulted before their eighteenth birthday. That’s the rape joke. 60% of sexual assaults are never reported to the police, and 97% of rapists will never spend a day in jail. That’s the rape joke. While reading this article you saw words like penetration, genital scarring, felatio, fngering and incest and did a double take. By the time you will have finished reading this, 11 people will have been sexually assaulted. That’s the rape joke.

Now ask yourself– did you laugh?
