Letters to Newtown: Dear Children, Sorry For the Shooting

by Abby Zimet

Another school shooting, this time in Colorado, not far from both Columbine and Aurora, and on the eve of today's anniversary of Sandy Hook. All year, remembrances have poured in to Newtown's town hall - over half a million letters, posters, drawings, quilts, bin after bin, wall after wall, with Kleenex boxes stationed nearby. The messages from kids, often as small as the Newtown victims, are the hardest to read. They are all now being archived. Since Sandy Hook, close to 200 more kids have been shot and killed. How many kids in how many towns will die before it stops?

"I am very sorry about your children...I wish I could help you...I didn't want that to happen...Here is a flower to make you feel better...I'm sorry, are you ok? Maby you can make new friends...I hope something like that doesn't happen again...."
