Feeding the Homeless Is Now An Arrestable Offense
North Carolina, home of an ALEC-inspired GOP agenda on steroids and Moral Mondays in fervent protest of it, improbably just got worse. This weekend a charity that for years has been feeding the homeless in downtown Raleigh was told by police they faced arrest if they handed out one more coffee and sausage biscuit - this, as 70 hungry people watched and waited for breakfast, which isn't available anywhere else on weekends. The Love Wins Ministry - really, though clearly not yet - is one of several charities being thus harrassed by law enforcement officers who say they're violating some unnamed ordinance that evidently says no demonstrating of a spark of humanity is allowed within the city limits. City officials are now said to be negotiating to find a suitable place where those charities can act out their sketchy Christian principles without embarrassing potential developers who might have to be confronted with the obscene inequities of our current nationwide economic system, of which they are a part. More idiot laws in North Carolina here.
“I understand downtown is getting bigger. I feel like they are trying to flush us out and get rid of the riff-raff. I don’t know where they’re going to run us to.” - Raheem Andrews, a regular customer of Love Wins since 2009.
