Long Time Coming: Marissa Alexander, AJ Bohanan and Our Enduring Racism

by Abby Zimet

Coming up on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, this happened: With a new legal team appealing her conviction and renewed interest in her case in the wake of George Zimmerman's trial, Marissa Alexander - the 32-year-old African-American mother of three now serving 20 years for standing her ground and firing a gun into a ceiling to stop her admittedly abusive husband from assaulting her - has spoken out to thank supporters and reiterate her faith in a justice system that to date has so egregiously failed her. At the same time, AJ Bohannon, a 25-year-old African-American, was arrested for criminal trespassing after walking around a Kansas mall in a black hoodie with a sign saying, “If I don’t stand for something then I will fall for anything #RIPTrayvon Martin.” Soon after, a small group of kids and young adults gathered to protest his arrest and what they charged was racial profiling. Two white racist idiots wearing shirts that said "Nigger" turned up at the protest to try and incite a riot or otherwise make trouble, an effort that failed, after which police let them go home in peace, because Martin Luther King's dream is a long time coming. Video of the trolls, petition for Alexander.
