No More State Secrets: Judge Allows Lawsuit Against NSA to Go Forward
A judge has ruled the Obama administration cannot cite the ‘state secrets’ privilege to halt a lawsuit against NSA surveillance brought by the Electronic Frontier Foundation years before Edward Snowden and his leaks surfaced. The Jewel vs. National Security Agency suit was was filed in 2008 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and AT&T customers who claimed Bush officials had conducted an “illegal and unconstitutional program of dragnet communications surveillance.” In what privacy advocates hailed as a "huge victory," the judge ordered the NSA to provide more data on how the “recent disclosure of the government’s continuing surveillance activities” could impact national security.
