The inaugural Troublemaker of the Year Award, given by a private foundation begun by self-described "angel investor and serial entrepreneur" Semyon Dukach to encourage young activists, has gone to Zack Kopplin, a 19-year-old Rice University student and Louisiana native who's spent the last two years fighting to repeal the 2008 Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA)  mandating that scientific facts like evolution and climate change be taught as “controversial theories” in public schools. Charging accurately and effectively that the law is a way to sneak creationist theories into school curriculums, Kopplin has debated, advocated, rallied, spoken endlessly to the media, gathered 74,000 petition signatures to repeal the law and garnered the  support of 78 Nobel Laureate scientists.
