What the War Is

by Abby Zimet

Mayu Mohanna, jury member from Peru, cites the way Paul Hansen’s photo "contrasts the anger and sorrow of the adults with the innocence of the children. It’s a picture I will not forget.”

The World Press Photo of the Year, by Swedish photographer Paul Hansen,  shows a group of men carrying the bodies of two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad through Gaza City for burial, followed by their father’s body on a stretcher. All were killed when their house was hit by an Israeli missile strike in November. Bernat Armangué of Spain also won several awards for his photos of the devastation in Gaza. A total of 54 photographers from 32 countries won prizes for their pictures; most were not as difficult to look at.
