On Dolphins and Drones

In a bizarre juxtaposition of wins - for both dolphins and our ever-more-impersonal waging of war - the Navy is cutting back on the trained dolphins it has used from Vietnam in the 1960s to Bahrain today to detect and sometimes destroy underwater mines. Use of both dolphins and sea lions in the Navy's $28 million Marine Mammal Program, headquartered in San Diego, will be curtailed in favor of newly developed, torpedo-shaped underwater robots. We congratulate the dolphins; we also wonder where - first the air, now the water - it will all end.
