Fighting (Successfully) Big Chains, Global Capitalism and So-Called Normality

by Abby Zimet

Arguing that “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should,” the residents of England's small, green, sustainability-minded seaside town of Totnes - population 7,500, and 42 local coffee shops - fought to keep out the English version of Starbucks, and won. Many see the victory over the ubiquitous Costa Coffee chain, with 1,400 outlets and growing fast, as a triumph of community over profits.

"We don't need Costa to give us a place to meet. We're a talking town." - Diana Cusack, 64.
