Not Courteous Nor Kind Nor Brave: With Sadness, Eagle Scouts Return Their Hard-Earned Medals

by Abby Zimet

Extraordinary, eloquent, moving letters from men, in this case all straight, who have returned their Eagle Scout awards - earned after years of service and considered a lifelong honor - to protest the Boy Scouts' choice to be "on the wrong side of history" and exclude anyone gay. From one in Boing Boing to a heartfelt cascade: Never let it be said one person can't make a difference.

"As a Boy Scout I was taught that ethics are important and that when something is unethical you should stand up and say something. I was taught that it is wrong to exclude people, whether based on race, physical ability or sexual orientation. I was taught that a Boy Scout stands with those being persecuted, and not with the persecutor.

Homosexuality is not a moral deviance, bigotry is...Today I am returning my Eagle Scout medal because I do not want to be associated with the bigotry for which it now stands.

Being morally straight means standing up for equal rights and inclusion, not bigotry."

Disappointedly..."
