In Arizona, Life Somehow Begins Two Weeks Before Conception. Don't Ask.

Proving definitively that Arizona is the worst place in the country to be a woman, or even a biped, Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law three extreme anti-abortion measures including a so-called “egg drop” bill that effectively bans abortion after 18 weeks, except in cases of medical emergency, by redefining pregnancy as beginning two weeks before conception. Also under the richly named Women’s Health and Safety Act, schools and the state must promote adoption and birth as the best outcome for an unwanted pregnancy, in part by displaying images of fetuses. And clinics must have signs warning against abortion "coercion" - all this, in the name of "protecting women from the serious health and safety risks of abortion." We're speechless.

Been there, done that.
I'll never be able to so much as look at another bowl of egg drop soup.
Totally should have let the South secede.
After growing up in New Jersey, and spending my adult years in New York, Massachusetts, California, and Oregon, I said the exact same thing two days after moving to Tennessee (more-or-less against my will, by the way). Sweet people, beautiful countryside, but....stoopid reigns.
Oy.
Well the left has more or less ruined those states you were in before. I certainly hope you do not ruin Tennessee as well.
TROLL ALERT.
Ah-Ha. Now that's a troll of a different color. Don't shake his hand, what ever you do. It's probably radioactive judging from his pro-nuke posts on the Bernie Saunders story.
And you don't know where that hand has been..
LOL, ctrl-z,
Come to think of it, DR NO did lose both of them "as an impetuous young engineer" handling uranium just like the discoverer of Uranium in real life did (both he and his wife). But it's O.K. to breath the radioactive fallout dust from Fukushima, because as everyone knows you don't need lungs.
..and ionizing radiation in the lungs kills those nasty cold germs.
"everyone knows you don't need lungs."..~ThomasJefferson
true, tj, corporations don't need lungs and since humans are disposable. . .
Really? Someone who points out bigotry is Troll? Way to help the fight.

I'm not sure what you thought I was replying to.
Hey Billy, Congratulations. You can read AND spell. Be sure to thank the leftists who made sure you had a public school to attend.
Yes over the years I have observed lefties leaving ground they have soiled and moving on to the unspoiled where they promptly demand everyone do their bidding amd generaly scewing it up.
Bud, thems iz carpetbaggers, not leftists
Aww, is your sister busy?
When a young adult, long before I became political, I was traveling through the South and had a terrible experience in Memphis. I stopped at a drive in eatery and was refused service by the high-school aged girl waiting the window. I was in a nice car, dressed in an average way, and the only thing I can think of that would set me apart was my Yankee accent. This was back in the early 70s. I've had an aversion to Tennessee ever since. It's a beautiful state, except for the occasional 'uppity' high school prom type and the typically southern attitudes of race and exclusion. My mother's folks were from Georgia and exemplified tolerance and respect for others, and I was always taught that only white trash put others down. The north may have plenty of trash, but when you get to Tennessee, you are wading in it. Your comment about the left is a good example.
I am sure everyone is pleasant in yankee land "no soup for you" lol.
I have an interesting book titled "Living Blue in a Red State." I recommend it to anyone, like me, living in such circumstances.
I thought doctors usually counted pregnancy from the time of the last period, not conception.
From wiki, as good a source on the internet as any
Healthcare professionals name three different dates as the start of pregnancy:
the first day of the woman's last normal menstrual period,
the date of conception (about two weeks before her next expected menstrual period), and
the date of implantation (about one week after conception).
Since these are spread over a significant period of time, the duration of pregnancy necessarily depends on the date selected as the starting point chosen.
The most common system used among healthcare professionals is Naegele's rule, which was developed in the early 19th century. This calculates the expected due date from the first day of the last normal menstrual period (LMP or LNMP) regardless of factors known to make this inaccurate, such as a shorter or longer menstrual cycle length. Pregnancy most commonly lasts for 40 weeks according to this LNMP-based method, assuming that the woman has a predictable menstrual cycle length of close to 28 days and conceives on the 14th day of that cycle, and a birth between 37 and 42 weeks LNMP is considered full-term.[12] Other, more accurate algorithms take into account a variety of other variables, such as whether this is the first or subsequent child (i.e., pregnant woman is a primipara or a multipara, respectively), ethnicity, parental age, length of menstrual cycle, and menstrual regularity), but these are rarely used by healthcare professionals.
So it bans abortion after 18 weeks of pregnancy? that's about 4 1/2 months... Can someone explain to me why that is so ridiculous...
.
Well, if you're a ten year old girl -- abortion would seem less destructive to her body than a full term pregnancy and delivery!
If you're a woman who is experiencing a difficult pregnancy which has the potential to do her irreparable harm, or even temporary harm, abortion should be an option.
If you're a woman who is carrying a DEAD FETUS, abortion should be an option.
If you're a woman carrying a fetus which has a grossly enlarged head and the child is unlikely to live -- and vaginal birth would be destructive to the woman -- abortion should be an option.
If you're a woman carrying a fetus which which is abnormal, the woman/family should have the option of ending the pregnancy via abortion.
If you are a woman who has been raped -- or a teenager, or young child who has been raped -- abortion should be an option.
Now, please explain why you're not aware of these problems and why you don't understand the need for abortion beyond 4 1/2 months?
Most abortions take place very early in the pregnancy.
Late term abortions take place for very serious reasons and are a very small percentage of abortions -- something like 1 in every county, every year.
You might also explain why it should not be women and doctors who decide on the necessity for abortion and not politicians?
Good for you, thanks for your view, it is mine too.
All very true and pertinent, conscience.
And there's still the question of exactly why, with all of the critical health(care) and financial issues that adversely affect the "quality of life" of a state's ordinary unprivileged citizens, a state legislature chooses to prioritize a Crusade Against Abortion.
It's simplistic and disingenuous at best to give these reactionary Elected Misrepresentative demagogues credit for thoughtfully, diligently, and responsibly pouncing on abortions, and solving an artificial problem by passing stern legislation that ostensibly nips unwarranted abortions in the bud-- on the preposterous grounds, yet, that they're heroically protecting and saving women from themselves and the horrors of unsafe and unnecessary bud-nipping.
Precisely
The last person who tried to politically control to this level, blew his brains out underneath Berlin in 1945. The operative word is control. .......Who ARE these people? What rock do they live under?
"...except in cases of medical emergency,"
Didn't you read that part? Not that I am interested in turning the clock back on abortion. Though if you trun it back far enough, it was more a private matter between a woman and her herb garden. Far enough and I think you could legally kill your infant after it was born.
But, for the modern world, I think the less women give birth the better off we'll all be.
You forgot to mention that a woman has the right to make decisions about her own body, and that those who would take that from her are power playing. I don't care why a woman chooses to abort, or when. If it is medically viable, it should be her right. It's really not rocket science.
I live in Arizona and am very familiar with the consequences of the acts of the person who is our governor. I know her type, having been raised amongst people like her. It's too bad she has any power over anyone. If it wasn't for that unlanced boil called Phoenix, those like her wouldn't stand a chance in this state.
Couldn't we do without Abby's inane editorial comments?
"We're speechless"? C'mon!!
Womens' health is at stake, there's a flat out hatred of women going on and we need to take these assaults (which is exactly what they are) more seriously.
The "stupid" is not all on the Right.
If true, this is definitive proof that homo-sapiens are de-evolving into a less intelligent form of life. If this continues, we'll be back in the Wild West only armed with nukes instead of guns.
mmmm, I'm not aware of any relationship between homo sapiens and intelligence. Aren't they those guys that think that their god created a son without a shag and that he is still alive at the age of 2000?
Are you making an argument for intelligence based on their plan to self destruct with nukes? I suppose you do have a point there.
But then, don't they make silly reply posts about Bruce Springsteen without reading what was originally said?!?!?
Arizona is in competition with the southern states to see who will be the most racist and, fascist state in the union and they are doing very well so far.
It certainly seems that way, Thalidomide: a race to the bottomless.
Or, as Denis Leary put it:
"Arizona. It's a dry hate."
It's all those bases and the retired (but just can't give up kicking ass) military: the dominant male in full lifelong battle mode against inferior/uppity beings.
Instead of evolving forward --- beyond "human" dignity, "human" rights -- to the recognition of and respect for the lives and dignity of other-than-human sentient beings -- many human-centered faith-based extremists are imploding. They are an impediment to the kind of moral evolution that welcomes and draws into the sphere of moral concern and significance all sentient beings who rightly should be valued as persons, not mere "things," not "resources" or stocks, as the Catholic Church teaches: The Catholic Church’s dogma regarding the moral status of non-human animals comes under the “Thomist or Roman tradition of moral philosophy, for which animals are effectively things, owed no duties of justice, charity or religion ‘as neither are stocks and stones’.”
Isn't it illogical, irrational, irresponsible to accept the status of "personhood" for corporations and fetuses, while defiantly denying the status of personhood to our sentient evolutionary kin merely because we humans believe, with unjustified confidence -- just as the faith-based extremists believe -- that "man is the standard of all things," "man is the center of the universe"? LOL!
Faith-based extremists believe that animals don't have souls, while idiots, imbeciles, and fetuses DO! How revolting!
You talk about the Catholic Church, but I don't see it being the Catholics down here in the South abusing their dogs.
Though I agree an evolution toward a theory of mind for animals is necessary. I've been trying down here, but so far all they are doiing is plucking chickens frantically and warming up the tar.
".., by redefining pregnancy as beginning two weeks before conception."
Okay, the logical consequence of this is to prosecute women who refuse to have sex while fertile for the murder of the unconceived child. If they had just gotten laid the baby would be fine. By selfishly refusing to seek out sex the "pregnant" woman has forever ended the chances for that poor egg to come into it's own. She has terminated an innocent potential child. Oh, the horror of it...
Exactly. As absurd as that sounds, it is no less absurd than defining an egg as a human being. Legal rape is what this is heading to.
Gee, why not legal rape, it's legal to follow a black kid and shoot him in Florida, or elect a man for governor who's company was proven to have committed the largest Medicare fraud in history. Legal rape appears to be in line with the rest of the far right agenda. Drop the ball in Wisconsin the day after the Packers win the super bowl, it's all relative.
It's not rape, it's conception assistance.
… think of all of those lonely unfulfilled spermatozoa.
Such unbearable suffering, for no CONCEIVABLE reason.
Untold billions suffer the indiginity of dying on mattresses every night. Won't someone start a petition!
This whole argument is based on a fallacy.
I read the articles. No where does it say that life begins before conception or implantation. It just references the way that doctors have been measuring the term of pregnency as starting at the the time of the last period. As it always has been.
That doesn't mean I'm supporting regressive laws that limit the ability of a woman to have a termination .
No - your comments are never in support of racism, class structure, the subjugation of women-i.e.:Authoritarianism. Everything you write actually means the opposite of what people comprehend from your written comments, once I learned that FACT I became able to "not respond" to your comments. Hope others can examine my learned maturity and just come to accept that you are committed to the opposite of what you infer.
Maybe you would like to read the stars so you can tell me and everyone else what I really mean..
TYVIA.
Arizona definitely seems to outdo itself every day in its race to the bottom.
I'd boycott, but its hard to think of anything useful that comes from that sorry bunch of loonies of the desert. No tourist dollars from me though.
We can give them back to Mexico.
