The 2012 World Press Photo of the year, by Samuel Aranda of Spain, shows a woman holding a wounded relative inside a mosque used as a hospital during anti-government clashes in Yemen. Many more extraordinary photos of the year here.

Show AllHow do we continue to consider ourselves "human" when we can do these sorts of things to each other? Are there no pictures of award quality that show us doing anything but responding to acts of violence? Or does the "press" just fail to cover them?
R U kidding? These are the only images that matter in a time of universal deceipt and war for profit. We need MORe of these images and we need to shove them down the throats of the smug, complacent pro-establishment pro-Israel right wing. The problem with most Americans is, they simply haven't felt the searing pain of the horrors they inflict upon others.
We need the Abu Ghraib-type photos, but we need the inspiring ones, too. There are lots of minor heroes and important events out there, but we too often don't hear about them. They are quite cheering in the midst of despair and set examples for us, validating our humanity, really. Here are a few:

And, of course, the Occupy movement: [http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1360&bih=836&q=occupy+movement&gbv=2&oq=occupy&aq=3&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=1&gs_upl=3611l4600l0l7990l6l6l0l0l0l0l135l676l1.5l6l0] (or just put "occupy" in Google Images)
There are, I'm sure, thousands of people and events that help keep us on the path to fulfilling our true destiny and full humanity. We do need to see such photos.
I can't look at that picture without thinking about the statue of Mary holding a dead Jesus on her lap
Yes, I too saw the pieta painting by michelangelo in this picture.
Yes, humans are capable of doing a lot of good, but on balance they are the cockroaches of the world.
With their failure to control their own numbers they have become a plague on this planet. They will eventually follow the bell-shaped curve of population growth and inevitable demise for they are no exception to nature's laws, a victim to their own evolutionary baggage including uncontrollable greed and a lust for power. When they, nature's glorious failure, are gone whatever remains of this planet and its sentient beings will hopefully recover and then be better off without them.
