Mmmm Good: Pink Slime and Ammonium Hydroxide

Okay, for any of you still eating Big Macs despite the aforementioned 7,642 reasons why you shouldn't: Possibly thanks to activist chef Jamie Oliver, McDonalds has announced they will stop adding "pink slime" - the filler of fatty beef trimmings swept off the slaughterhouse floor and then treated with ammonia (think: cleaning your kitchen floor) to kill off bacteria - to their burgers. They follow on the heels of Burger King and Taco Bell. We're still not going there. But still.
“Imagine how happy an accountant is - you just turned dog food into what can potentially be your kids’ food.” - Oliver on pink slime.

Show AllI went thru both the both the articles Abby linked to, and neither one of them says anything about bits swept of the floor. This is not the first time Abby has put out false claims...
The articles do talk about the safety of ammonia tho.
No false claims here....From the "Grist" article: "Beef Products buys the cheapest, least desirable beef on offer–fatty sweepings from the slaughterhouse floor, which are notoriously rife with pathogens like E. coli 0157 and antibiotic-resistant salmonella."
Yeah. That link was missing before. I guess Abby does read the comments. Hi Abby...
Yeah, Abby's constant rage at McDonald's is hard to explain, so I'm glad you double checked.
There's not much wrong with McDonald's that isn't wrong with the food industry everywhere. Just the same, from the post I'd say if you're hankering for a salty, dry hamburger McDonald's is the place to go since it says it has quit buying meat with the sweepings. Dunno what's in the hamburger at my favorite neighborhood sports bar -- and the owner probably doesn't either.
Last summer I drove on back roads from Dubuque, Iowa almost to the Twin cities without being able to find a cafe for breakfast. They're disappearing everywhere. In much of this great country of ours chain-restaurants are all that are left.
At least at McDonald's you can see the food being prepared.
The abundance of mom-and-pop diners, taverns and bars is one of the redeeming characteristics of Pennsylvania. When I travel to the Midwest or South for work, I am always stunned at how the only dining is god-awful tasteless crap from "Applebees", "Chili's" of other corporate crap on some 4-lane strip on the outskirts of town.
Abby sometimes exaggerates or reaches unfounded conclusions - she ought to be more careful, as those habits affect her credibility. Surely her intention is not to just manipulate the readership into responding?
Ammonia is one of the waste products of human excretion. Let urine stand long enough, it forms ammonia. That's what makes your kitty box stink. It's used to cut animal grease in various processes such as fullering and tanning. Yum yum!
In any case, there is no way in hell I would feed my dog American McD hamburger meat - I wouldn't feed my dog anything I wouldn't eat myself, and that includes dog food. We are entitled to better, and so are our pets.
I googled and read other articles on the story, and McDonald's isn't denying said use. And sure, the government doesn't mind if you ingest a certain amount of ammonium, so you be sure to get all you want within that limit, but as for me, I'll go without, thanks. You can have my allowable limit of radiation exposure, too, if it interests you.
The USFDA also accepts a certain amount of rodent droppings, insect parts, animal hair in our food, as those are impossible to eliminate completely from the harvesting-storage-processing chain. But that's a long way from actually ADDING toxic substances to the food, eh.
Another interesting additive is meat glue, used to glue together bits and pieces of assorted trimmings, which are then wrapped in plastic, sliced, and sold as a higher-priced "cut". I never buy any meat that's been wrapped in saran and then sliced - kind of a tip-off. Kind of a rip-off. At least, meat glue is actually made from meat and not peepee.
Amazing!! And people think vegans are crazy to stick to papayas, mangoes, berries, avocados, cashews, whole grains... when all this stuff is obviously so much more appetizing and nutritious.
I guess it goes back to our early fathers who first looked at road kill and started salivating. Can you imagine picking up a dead rat and not wanting to devour it?
http://allinharmony.org/from_empire_to_ecology/meat-eating_why_it_began
But vegans are dangerous people, waiting on every corner to attack responsible law-abiding meat-eaters. Have you not seen the anti-vegan websites and occasional foaming-at-the-mouth meat-eater commenters here? Mad Cow maybe?
Hitler was a vegan so that proves it. Oops! Godwin just got me.
Not to worry - you'll get your ration of insect parts, rat hair, and rodent poop in the veggies and grains you eat. Gawd only knows what all is in the tofu!
Obviously, these fast food biznizzez don't give a rat's ass about their customers. I'm done with companies that sacrifice people to their bottom line. That would be the fast food industry that makes trillions and pays their workers chump change already. This pink slime thing is as bad a Soilent Green,
l heard of a worker that tripped on the conveyor that was taking meat to the grinder. Luckily he yelled "Fire" getting someone's attention who turned off the machine just before he would have gone into the grinder. When they asked him why he yelled "Fire"he said " Who would have paid attention if l yelled "HAMBURGER !"
Read Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" - it's about the meat processing industry in Chicago in the 30's (?). It caused quite a stir, as Lewis described men falling into vats of lard being processed along with the lard. I suspect that human body parts end up in the food chain more often than we care to recognize - "long pork" the Hawaiians used to call it.
Lewis was disappointed in he public response, as his intention apparently was to raise consciousness about human rights, labour and safety violations in the meat processing industry, but people cared only about the purity of their food.
The jungle was written in 1906 - it led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug
Act the same year.
The 1930's are a long way from 1906 in terms of wages and working conditions. I wish things were as good as the post Wagner-Act 1930's today.
Yup, I had the date wrong. The point still works, though. I agree about the rest.
That book is one of the reasons I have been a vegetarian for 30 years!
Poor Upton Sinclair. He said this about his book which was supposed to be about the horrible poverty and working conditions in the non-union meat packing plants: "I aimed for the public's heart, but by accident hit them in the stomach."
Capitalism and its "wonders!" Capitalism "love it" or get rid of it! Hey, maybe we could try that.
Americans are eating shit and loving it..! Vote Republican for even more shit..!
What makes you think GOoPer shit is any different then Demo shit?
I know from experience that spoiled meat, rancid and all is exposed to radiation and then added to the mix for fast food hamburger. Imagine that!
