Pizza As Vegetable, and Bring On the Sodium

Last time we looked, that was not this.
Showing their usual priority-setting acumen, House Republicans are fighting proposed new USDA nutrition guidelines for school lunches, arguing that the smidgen of tomato paste on pizza should count as a vegetable (as it does now!?) and that bucketloads of fries and salt are just fine for our nation's youth, thanks, even if escalating obesity rates did cost the nation $147 billion in medical costs last year. Coincidentally, it seems the changes were requested by the frozen pizza, salt and potato industries.

Show AllIt is high time we replaced the science of nutrition with the well established greedy necessity of profit. What's good for the 'food industries' is good for the country.
This is what U.S. American public schools are all about, healthy minds and bodies. But of course pizza is a vegetable, and Jesus loves you, and America is the greatest country in the world. Good Day!
Wow. A blast from the Raygun past. He issisted that ketchup be counted as a vegetable.
But I'm jsut a corporate shill, so ignore me.
Nobody believes you're a corporate shill, though I bet everyone does believe that you think you're intelligent and probably are enough so that when some early formed bit of presumption limits you from logical discourse, you deny the intelligence of others and stroke your own ego. Or something like that. Avocado's are fruit.
Pizza is a food created and developed to a high culinary art in the US. We should eat more pizza, and make sure that people in foreign countries do as well. This will accomplish three things: 1) We can improve our balance of trade with other countries via frozen-food exports 2) Our anti-cholesterol and anti-hypertension drug manufacturers can grow their top line 3) We can feel good about ourselves and our lasting contribution to world culture.
There may be other benefits as well, but we need not cover them in depth. We should remain focused on our goal, using teamwork to develop market efficiencies.
I hope they don't forget those classics, like chocolate, corn syrup, and bleached white flour. Twinkies anyone?
Tomatoes are fruits, not vegetables.
When I started teaching at an alternative high school for at-risk students, levels of violence and hostility at the school were frightening. After a couple of years of discussion, we finally got rid of all candy machines, pop machines and shit food in the cafeteria. The difference in student behavior was astonishing. One might pass this off as anecdotal evidence, except that the same thing happens wherever real food replaces corn syrup and sugar and bleached white flour. One of my son's teachers had an opened bag of twinkies tacked to the wall. It looked new and tasty. It had been there, unchanged for four or five years. Most ADD or ADHD behavior can be eliminated with good diet. So can obesity. But all of the above comments [sarcasm always makes me grin] are true. The health of children is of no matter to those whose sole motivation is profit, or to those who suck at the trough of the profit makers.
I agree with you about the elimination and control of obesity through proper, nutritious diet, ironblood, but I do not agree with the theory that disorders such as ADD, ADHD and other neurological disorders can be eliminated through a good diet. Here's why:
ADD, ADHD and other neurological disorders are innate disorders that're biologically-based. Junk food does not cause these afflictions, as people are afflicted with these neurological disorders well before their born..they're hard-wired together like that during fetal development, in utero. It's possible that junk food can and will exacerbate the symptoms in some people who're afflicted with ADD/ADHD, and other neurological disorders, but they do not cause them, by any means. The biological predisposition towards these innate neurological disorders has to already be present in the first place.
Actually, independentminded, a lot of the kids in our school, at least, whose behavior changed markedly for the better were kids who had been diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD. It is the behavioral outcome which is important. The underlying neurological problem is manageable if the diet is very good. I would surely have been diagnosed ADD as a child if such diagnoses had been around then. When my diet was shitty I was an asshole and when I ate as I should I am okay. [Jeez I almost said great, but I know my friends would all laugh at me ... lol].
Now if schools would get out of the business of feeding people and focusing their time and money on teaching, maybe kids would have a better education. Also, our 'elected officials' would have more time addressing real problems (like skyrocketing national debt) instead of squabbling what constitutes a vegetable.
For some reason, I cannot stop laughing after reading this.
*yawn* More right wing pie in the sky mental masturbation.
That schools are in the business of teaching, is PRECISELY why they should feed kids. Kids that are properly fed learn better.
As for the debt, start by reducing military spending by half. Then, reduce it half again. Fixed.
"As for the debt, start by reducing military spending by half. Then, reduce it half again. Fixed"
Got some bad news for ya.... Cut military spending to zero and the US still has a deficit.
Perhaps.
But if we:
1. Deeply cut military spending;
2. Raise Federal income tax rates to levels of the prosperous 1960s,
3. Remove the ceiling on the SS tax,
4. Impose a medicare-for-all system with concomitant cost controls that the rest of the world uses,
And the deficit would turn into a surplus. At any rate, deficit spending, within reason, isn't a problem anyway.
Coming from someone else, I would regard this as sarcasm. But knowing the color of your spots, I can tell that you are for real.
Funny, as in those same schools, students are taught tomatoes are a fruit. But in the Orwellian nightmare, politicians redefine whatever the hell they want.
Tomatoes are, strictly speaking fruits, as are beans, peas, peppers.
One of the reasons so much processed food is produced is because of industrial food systems. It has to go somewhere.
Has anyone else read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes?
Frightening.

Children are to be used however the corporate power structure deems fit. They are to be put into life long debt, have their health destroyed to benefit the big phrama health care industry, brainwashed into super patriots to be fed into the war machine, or identified as problems to be handled by the industrial prison system. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!
"Pizza As Vegetable, and Bring On the Sodium"
French fries are vegetables, of course - recommended nutrition, sure. Ice cream's health food, and apple-shaped candy's fruit. Obviously. - The more processed, the safer the food. Can't trust stuff you just pick off the ground or trees. Bugs, ya know... Nature's nasty that way: should be outlawed altogether in free form - nature should only exist in controlled environments.
Congresses approval rating is somewhere around 9%. I guess they aren't going to stop this kind of nonsense until they get it down to 0%.
Oddly enough that news looks better all the time - occupy zero.
Some school districts have found a way to be Republican while pretending otherwise. They boast widely about using the local fresh food markets - making it sound like it's a regular item on their menu - when the kids are only seeing 4-5 pieces of tomatoe once a month in a pinky paper cup - like the ones you get at McD's for ketchup. Those same districts boasting about their real food programs chastise children for helping themselves to too many milks (lilke Oliver Twist), slapping their hands, and then throwing large quanties of milk away instead. (Don't want those poah children to get too greedy and not know their place! Buy your own calcium kid! This is going in the garbage!) Those are the Democrats though. Not the Republicans. They just try to make you "think" they're serving real food. But they never really bother, and one really wonders where that money is really going in the public school district. Meanwhile the real food program the Democrats are serving is junk snack, and nothing substantial in terms of nutrients or even calories that growing bodies need during the day. They are NOT getting meals. They're getting a couple of snacks. It comes right down from the Superintendent's office. They hire their own people to continue covering it up. It's very sad to see the rampant corruption in education these days.
I will add that, I think they should be serving potatoes - just real potatoes and without the bad fats and sodiums. They're very nutricious grown from the ground.
Yes. The nutrition-value of potatoes is almost without parallel. Whole countries in Europe subsisted on them after they were introduced and spread widely from the late 16th century onwards. The great Irish Potato Famine ca. 1848, after a potato blight made the harvest fail, caused the death of 25 % of Irland's population (!). That's when the Irish fled Irland and emigrated to e.g. USA.
It's interesting you should bring up the Irish potato famine, because, although there was a blight that killed off the potato crop, there was still plenty of food around to eat. But that was being shipped off to the kitchens of the very rich in England. Food that could have fed people near to where it was grown was shipped off to where the money was, as is what happens when food becomes a mere commodity. What happens when crops start failing from climate change, in this country?
Then we eat pizza, A veggie, just ask mr. Cain and his republicans, climate increase just means hot pizza.
This has to be a joke, right?
