Bush Tax Cuts Cost the Rest of Us $11.6 Million An Hour. Yes, An Hour.

A report from the National Priorities Project - slogan: Bringing the Federal Budget Home - finds that tax cuts to the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans continue to cost the U.S. Treasury - ie: us - $11.6 million every hour of every day. They've installed a rolling counter to see that the total is...well, it's gone up a few hundred thousand since you started reading this.

Show AllDoes the $11.6 million per hour figure include the cost of Obama's "payroll tax holiday" that was added when Obama extended the cuts on 12/31/10 and they became the Bush/Obama tax cuts ?
Visiting the site it's not clear exactly what they are including. I looked for a breakdown and all I could find was the "script" that came up with these rolling figures. It didn't outline exactly what was included.

No one needs to beat up on Obama, all they need to do is stick to the facts. His record is proof enough.
How easily you forget how the Republicans threatened to filibuster anything if their beloved tax cuts were not extended. It's not like he had a choice.
Sure he had a chance. He could've stayed the course and let the Rethugs filibuster. Either way, he ended up showing the American public which side he was on -- and as it turned out, he wasn't/isn't on ours.
This poster is for you...

I can guarantee you ShadowDancer, that he would hang out with you and your people before he hung out with many churches and many so called Christians.
"Bush Tax Cuts Cost the Rest of Us $11.6 Million An Hour. Yes, An Hour." And they would have expired had Obama not signed them back into law. But he got US gays in the military. Obama then did his signature victory lap and lefty pundits talked about not making the good the enemy of the bad, or something!
Bush only needed 51 votes to enact the cuts. Harry always needs 60 (wink, wink) to get anything done. Unless, like with the Chinese currency bill, he decides that he too only needs a simple majority. The simple majority rule goes back to the Magna Carta, Harry! It's majority rules, not minority rules, Harry!
Wake up America the purple parties, red and blue, are not representing you. Are We 99% Socialist? "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." — John Steinbeck
Someday We 99% will get our tax break. (Over the 1%'s dead bodies or after you claw Heston's guns from his cold clammy fingers or when pigs fly or when hell freezes over.)

Don't kid yourself. Obama chose to capitulate.
How easily you forget. The Bush tax cuts would have expired had Obama not signed them back into law. The Republicans have been and still are filibustering everything. Nothing has changed there. These are the Obama tax cuts now.
Yup blame it on Obama that he chose to capitulate rather than let the Republicans shut down the government and send the economy deeper into a hole. Real wise there I would say.
Where did Amy find this picture? I'd like to get a copy. If I remember correctly, this was the one and only time, at least as far as we know, that the great mystic Jesus became angry.
The follow up to this was Franklin D Roosevelt "drving the monery changers from the temples of power" to insure rule by the people in the 1930s unless some want to bring up Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson in the beginning of the 19th Century taking on the US banking monopoly.
Perfect comparison, this poster. Scary, because that's where we are right now.
The problem with taking the Bible literally: this is a fictional story, a metaphor not fact.
And if you read your Bible, no, this isn't the only time Jesus got angry. The other time he became so angry at a fig tree for not having any figs, he cursed it to never bear fruit again. Sounds like the "son of God" is a little schizo to me.
(Matthew 21:18-22
"Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered.")
And if there was a personal God, I doubt he'd hang with the Mormons after the Mountain Meadows Massacre (massacre in which Mormons dressed up as Native Americans and slaughtered roughly 120 unarmed men, women, and children ca 1857 for *no reason*, and probably under the orders B. Young).
So, pictures like this mean little. More facts, fewer cartoons, Common Dreams.
Lighten up.
I like what's presented here. It's simple and to the point, and what we're losing from the billionaires the rest of us for a ride is the real point.
Let us take to heart Henry A Wallace sage words-- the "democractic philosophy pervades not only the hearts and minds of those who live by the Christian religion. . . but those who draw their inspiration from Mohammedanism, Judaism, Hinduism, Confucianism and other faiths. When we look beneath the outer forms, we find that all these faiths, in one way or another, preach the doctrine of the dignity of the individual human soul. . . the essential unity of the entire world."
What a great poster! Jesus called the 1% of his time, a den of vipers. He must have really detested these money changers, as he willingly let himself be crucified, but he showed violence against the corrupt banksters of his time.
We are the 99%! THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED!!!!
Getting 49% of Americans united would be a challenge. 99% ?
Yes, a challenge but the fact remains that you and 99% of other Americans have been; are now; or will be screwed by the 1%. The #OWS movement, even though nascent, is in its infancy and will continue to grow much like so many other American movements dating clear back to slavery, because the 99% of us are financial slaves!
Awesome poster!
Does anyone know where I can get access to view this rolling counter? Just for those down days when my spirits need an uplifting?!
My guess is that these aren't just the Bush-era tax cuts, which at the time the Senate Democrats provided the votes to pass the legislation, but also the Obama tax cuts. I followed the links but couldn't find enough detail on how they calculate the figures. If these figures don't include Obama's tax cuts, then another count needs to be started giving him credit for his share.
The Bush tax cuts expired. The rates in effect today are the Obama tax cuts.
Bingo.
Agree exactly. However, I think they are calculating the cost based on the interest we are paying on the debt accumulated because of the tax cuts. So today we are paying interest on the debt resulting from both the Bush-era tax cuts and Obama tax cuts.
How easily you forget how the Republicans threatened to filibuster anything if their beloved tax cuts were not extended. It's not like he had a choice.
Obama could have been proactive making clear that he wanted them to expire, and he didn't. I mean, it's not as if he is the President of the US or anything? I mean, the guy just can't get his voice heard, as he has no means of making his case right?
As far as the filibuster nonsense, Harry Reid, Majority Leader of the Senate, HIMSELF chooses whether or not, he will allow a "procedural filibuster". Obama, and the current right wing leadership of the Democratic Party, have been all too happy, to coalesce through this filibuster nonsense, a voting block of Republicans and Conservative/Right Wing Democrats, to prevent everything resembling progressive legislation from passing. It is intentional.
If Obama really would have wanted a public option for instance, then he wouldn't have promised the big insurers and big pharma privately that any bill would not contain such a provision. But as you recall, the bogus "threat of a filibuster" was the excuse given as to why the bloody health care bill didn't end up with a public option. The truth is, none of the current leadership of the Democratic Party wanted it, end of story.
The same for taxes on the wealthy. Obama has played "progressives" for suckers, at least the ones that still believe his bullshit.
Great poster !!!

"Bush Tax Cuts Cost the Rest of Us $11.6 Million An Hour. Yes, An Hour."
Yes, but look at all the jobs they've produced. There are so many jobs that some people are able to take two or three of them!
