Guns In Bars: What Could Go Wrong? Umm: This.

Too Much Irony Even For Us Dept: The Tennessee GOP state representative who sponsored a 2009 bill allowing people to bring handguns into bars was arrested for driving drunk with a loaded gun. Police said Curry Todd - also famous for comparing immigrants to breeding rats - was "almost falling down," which kinda shows in his memorable mugshot. See mugshot. See logical outcome of incredibly stupid law.

Show AllI guess Curry Todd's next bill will be to allow prisoners to carry guns.
Here you go again with yer fancy-shmancy, pinky-dew, la-de-da, finishin'-school, back-Eastern nose up in the air where it don't belong, Miss Abby!
You got no business insinuatin' that a red-blooded American citizen ain't entitled to the full protection of the Second Amendment to the Yewnited States Constitution jes' because he's had a drop 'r two ta drink, damn yer hide!
LOL
fucking unbelievable.
thank you abby for the story/links....
...peace...
I totally agree with you:) .. Although quite possible pathologically insane, especially, when according to "police affidavit" he was "obviously very impaired and not in any condition to be carrying a loaded handgun."
How can some be so immoral and unpatriotic to think, much less, vote these people into office to "establish Justice, ...promote the general Welfare," of "a more perfect Union"???

maybe they empathize w/ psychotic hypocrites.... perhaps they embrace our countries sense of entitlement... maybe they're brainwashed.... or are incapable of critical thinking....i don't know.
i am for gun regulations. i understand the political component of the argument that the people must be able to defend themselves from the tyranny of despotic govts. my solution would be to disarm the cops (level the playing field) and dismantle the munitions factories and gun manufacturers -- not give everyone in the country a loaded gun and a gin tonic.
my family never had guns in the house, so on that score i'm biased. if people feel they need guns to protect themselves from the govt (i don't really buy the argument) then the guns should be locked up in a case at home, and everyone who owns a gun receives mandatory gun training (swiss model). when people flagrantly disregard gun laws - they should be severely punished w/ jail time.
handguns (and semi automatic guns) are designed to do one thing, kill and intimidate other people.

Anyone who thinks that having a gun or two in the house will let him defend himself against the government has been watching too many John Wayne movies. If the SWAT team wants to enter your house, it will, and all you can do is be killed resisting it.
yeah, the assholes kill your dogs too.
Not sure what the law allowing guns in bars has to do with the law now allowing someone to carry under the influence. Someone can get drunk in places other than bars. And there is a law prohibiting them to carry while drunk, which, BTW, is a good thing.
But yeah, must be slow news day and we all know your anti gun bias.
Yup, suits my anti-gun bias to a T. You almost can't make this up. Like Iranians hiring Mexican gangsters to off Saudi diplomats in DC. Only this one's for real. Are you a fan of open carry?? Just asking.
Yes, because people are as likely to get drunk in a McDs, or a Starbucks, or at a bus stop, or at a grocery store / supermarket, as they are in a bar.
IIRC people are far more likely to get drunk in a private home than anywhere else, including bars.
Should we have a law banning gun possession at house parties?
When my neighbors have a family and friends barbecue, there might be half-a-dozen pistol-carriers in the group, and there for sure is a gun safe packed full in the house. Everybody gets blasted. Way more drunk than they could get at a law-abiding bar in my State.
Is this situation somehow safer than these same fellows "packin heat" in a bar? Remember, at the barbecue there are many children present in the potential cross-fire, whereas there are none at the bar.
I think possession laws and carry laws are fundamentally flawed because they do not attack the problem at the source -the factories where guns are made.
Your argument conflates public and private spaces. There is a difference in how the two are regulated.
Are bars public spaces?
They are privately owned and operated. Just like my neighbor and his barbecue.
I realize that the laws in many places make the distinction you do.
But aren't we questioning laws here?
So you gun-nuts don't know the difference between a bar and you neighbor's barbecue.
And we supposed to believe you have the brain cells to protect our freedoms.
Is that right, rfloh?!? Since when are people just as likely to get drunk at McDonald's, Starbucks, a bus stop or a supermarket as they are in a bar? That's ludicrous!
The politician from Texas who was carrying a loaded firearm while intoxicated deserved to get into trouble. it served him right, imho.
Would you care to explain how fascism and liberalism fit together? What kind of liberalism are you talking about? Neo or old fashioned? Economic or social-policy liberalism? Seven Wars? That's a lot. And I won't even bother to get into trashing your "logic", because it would miss the target. So to speak.
ricardohead
Very well said.
I think Liberal Fascist might be a better label.
Liberal Imperialist is even better.
Liberal Corporatist-Imperialist is more exact.
"Liberal" here is meaning "new" or "not conservative" not "liberating" or "libertine".
And you know exactly who is meant. The PC-Police and their often-allies in the socially-permissive end of our Empire's political class.
Lastly, faulty logic does not stop being logic. ;)
"fascist Liberal"!!! Love it! Love the way you gomers toss every concept into a blender and just let'er rip! What an oxy-Moran!
By definition 'fascist' implies a bundle of sticks. The bundle being stronger than any one stick. By definition 'liberal' implies 'free-thinking' and not 'group-think'. Liberals are all over the map in what they consider prudent laws, society, etc. Righties are the faction that stick together on a rigid dogma (such as no tax increases no matter what) and thus could be termed fascist by definition.
You have to go a little farther with your definition. A bundle of sticks is also known as a faggot. The questions arise. What do the sticks consist of in fascism, IOW what exactly is bundled together? and How do gay people get named faggots? What is the history of each term? You may have some definitions that help you through the day, but at the very least, do a wikipedia on those terms and inform yourself a little better. It's really annoying to have stuff explained by people who don't really know, though I'm sure you mean well.
Your post makes more sense than mine?
Yep.
How did gays get the term faggots? Here is what I've heard. Back in the middle ages they used to burn gays at the stake. A faggot is a LARGE bundle of sticks, about the size of a human, and they are used when burning people at the stake. The phrase "put on another faggot" became twisted into being used for the people themselves. It is a constant reminder that these folks used to be used as human candles.
Nice, huh?
"Moran" refers to a photograph of a sign held by a protester which reads "get a brain morans." This photograph has appeared countless times on many websites. Enter "morans" in Google images to see it.
Let me straighten out that bit about oxymoron. I have been using that term correctly since before you were a twinkle in your father's eye. I know what an oxymoron is, know how to spot one, how to use one, and I know when the term is being used inappropriately by people trying to sound educated. My use of oxy-Moran" is a reference to a picket sign held up by a Tea Party genius - probably one of your relatives - that proclaimed, “GET A BRAIN! MORANS” , and so it was a commentary on ignorance. You, young pustule, need to learn the device of oblique references, and what is a political concept and what is not. Silly rules made by silly people attempting to deal with silly personal sensitivities are not political concepts. I'm not a Ron Paul supporter either - whatever difference that would make to an argument, sheesh.
My birthday is on Saturday. I'm going to have a cake!
Thank you. You look so young!
Huh!!??
You do understand that Common Dreams is private site, yes?
Ie, they have a right to publish whatever they want, they have a right to institute whatever flagging principles they want, and yes, make people disappear. If you don't like that, why not start up your own site?
". In the opposite vein, a progressive conservative might be what Ron Paul's attitude is on such topics as peace"
How about RPs view on capitalism, hmm? Interesting how you RP cheerleaders never want to address that.
"And I am not a Ron Paul supporter. "
quacks like a duck, etc.
Wouldn't that be the same argument used to allow for "armed patron" bars?
It is a private bar, if you don't want to be around a bunch of pistol-packing boozers, you can go somewhere else? ;)
Isn't this also the argument of Jim Crow at lunch counters, etc.?
We need better arguments than this.
In re Paul: Is there an anti-capitalist running for the Red (GOP) Party Prez Nomination next year? I hadn't heard. ;)
Amazing. You gun-nuts will say anything.
"And there is a law prohibiting them to carry while drunk, which, BTW, is a good thing."
interesting, why wasn't todd charged w/ that crime ? what if the gun isn't on your person, but is sitting next to you in a car while you're drunk - is that still 'packing' ? apparently not. maybe for good measure the TN legislature can examine this loophole and name the bill after mr todd.

"And there is a law prohibiting them to carry while drunk, which, BTW, is a good thing."
interesting, why wasn't todd charged w/ that crime ?
he was charged with that crime as well as dui
and the gun was holstered between his seat and the center console in his vehicle
thanks for clarifying that : ) ... is there a link. after searching a little and reading the citation for arrest (which mentions DUI), i don't see a citation for violating any gun rules/laws/regulations ? just trying to find the truth. respectfully w/...

Oh I like that. Or maybe drunks should be allowed to carry guns to defend themselves against other armed drunks.
only if it can be broadcast on a reality tv show.
...peace...
Guns don't kill armed drunks, armed drunks...oh, never mind.
duplicate post...

This piece is an example of how the oligarchy convinces liberals and progressives to convince themselves to remain unarmed and defenseless.
"A woman who demands further gun control legislation is like a chicken who roots for Colonel Sanders. "
Larry Elder
"By the end, everybody had a label - pig, liberal, radical, revolutionary... If you had everything but a gun, you were a radical but not a revolutionary. "
Jerry Rubin
"Crime is actually less in places where people own guns. Washington, D.C., is a case in point. It has the strictest gun laws, but who has the highest crime rate in the country? Washington, D.C."
Luke Scott
"I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it."
Clint Eastwood
I convinced myself I didn't need a gun before there was an oligarchy.
I think there was an oligarchy before there were guns.
So go overthrow the oligarchy with your precious guns then. Go on. Or are you only capable of regurgitating quotes?
I like the quotes better than the "Direct Democracy" spamming.
More substantive, y'know? ;)
"So go overthrow the oligarchy with your precious guns then. Go on."
Not if it means you will be in charge
I guess the designated driver can also be the designated shooter.
Ummm, not really. I'm in favour of gun control, always have been, but banning them isn't going to end gun grimes. Just like banning pot hasn't stopped pot crimes...
Pot crimes... whoa, NOW we're talking some serious stuff.
Why isn't more attention being paid to pot crimes?
Pots don't kill people, cutlery kills people.
