Identified: NYPD Officer Who Maced Peaceful Protesters

photo by Jim Kiernan / http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimkiernan/sets/72157627623086865/
A photographer has identified the cruel and cowardly NYPD supervisor who point blank maced a penned in group of young women and then slinks away Saturday at the Occupy Wall Street protests:
Deputy Inspector Anthony V. Bologna of the NYPD Patrol Borough Manhattan South.
TAKE ACTION
If you think Deputy Inspector Bologna should be fired and prosecuted for his abuse of power, file an on-line complaint with:
- Mayor Michael Bloomberg: http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mayor.html
- and, NYPD Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly: http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mailnypd.html
- and, the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board: https://www.nyc.gov/html/ccrb/html/complaint.html
UPDATED: The Guardian reported that Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna also stands accused of false arrest and civil rights violations in a claim brought by a protester involved in the 2004 demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Then, 1,800 people were arrested during protests against the Iraq war and the policies of president George W Bush. Alan Levine, a civil rights lawyer representing a protester at the event, told the Guardian that he filed an action against Bologna and another officer in 2007. The case is expected to be heard next year.

Slow-Motion Video of Saturday's Macing Assault
And, James Fallows at The Atlantic writes:
According to the NYT, the chief police spokesman, Paul Browne, said that the policeman used pepper spray "appropriately." Great. On the video we can't hear what either side is saying. But at face value, the casualness of the officer who saunters over, sprays right in the women's eyes, and then slinks away without a backward glance, as if he'd just put down an animal, does not match my sense of "appropriate" behavior by officers of the law in a free society.

Show AllThey wouldn't spend so much on elections if it were not still true. We still each have one vote. If we use them. Many like you throw your hands up and say my vote doesn't matter. That's what they would like you to believe.
i think what dubet means (correct me if i'm wrong) is that the legislator that your vote elects is 'legislator' in name only. he is a paid puppet for the real masters who actually write the laws and decide on foreign and domestic policy.
and the reason they "spend so much on elections" is because the job of corporate shill pays so well. and besides, it's not their (the shill's) money.
yes, you are on the right track...as difficult as it is to face, however, we must go even further...
the entire concept of a 'voter' determining policy is nothing more than simple flattery...defensive flattery, as they don't want angry mobs coming for their lands, homes and possessions...
this is why a policeman's macing of caged protesters is generating so much interest...it lays bare the hollowness of the flattery, and the powerlessness of the nonviolent voter...
rather than hold voters in esteem, they hold voters in contempt...they hold you and I in contempt...
they employ violence, even to caged victims, while their victims do not, and will continue to do so until physically stopped...
the truth, like the pepper spray, hurts...
the reason such vast sums are spent is to preserve the illusion of voting 'power'...
'the vote must matter, or we wouldn't spend this kind of money'...precisely the conclusion come to in one of the posts above...
unfortunately, an incorrect conclusion...
as odd as it sounds, they spend this kind of money because the vote doesn't matter, but they wish it to appear to matter...to be vital...
remember where the campaign money goes: the media...all in the family...
technology has made it even easier to control the voting process...
no, focus must be on the body, not the process by which one is seated...
the body is corrupted, and will remain so, via reward or punishment, regardless of the vote...
We live in a plutonomy. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0BzgUudifBc68ZGUyNzA0MzAtZDZkZC00ZmZjLTkwY2ItNzBlZWRmNjI1ZTNm&hl=en_US . It was created by all of us, not just the rich. The rich obviously take advantage of our spending, but all their money and power inherently comes from us.
So yeah, the rich have ALL the power...except when it comes to voting. They are scared shitless of our voting power. They spend an exuberant amount of money trying to manipulate our votes by creating media conglomerates and controlling the politicians. While it may be true that the body is corrupted, you must remember that WE are the body. The head is corrupting the body and the body does what the head says.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if you really want to fix this country, don't go around and just blame the rich. Blame yourself first. We made them who they are.
Sorry not buying it. They could just pay media and congressmen, but no they campaign. I am not throwing my vote away. I know it matters. If more Gore supporters had felt that way perhaps he would have been elected. But no you gave it up. You caved. I don't need a foreign country to enforce my right to a democracy by bombing it like in Iraq or Libya. I know my rights and I hold my vote. And candidates have to earn it. I don't sell it out, not even to democrats. Not feeling powerless at all.
please don't make the mistake of thinking I've never voted...
I was passionate about politics for some time, becoming involved in cauci, doorbelling, etc...
that is what taught me the truth...that and watching that two-faced-slimeball-of-conflicting-financial-interest 'Senator' John Kerry fall like a wet leaf and lay there whimpering about not asking for a recount, and honorable loss, after a questionable election...on the heels of an outright fraudulent one 4 years before on behalf of the same gangsta prick whose family has been directly running this country since they took out JFK...Bush, Sr., was in Dallas, that day, you know...coincidence?
clinging to a meaningless vote, rather than accepting direct, and personal, responsibility for the land beneath our feet, the water and air flowing upon and above, the other animals and plants sharing this world with us, and the organizing of our immediate and nearby social bands, is the heart of our trouble...
we need to stop paying murderers for our right to exist, and
'stand in the place where we live'...tip o' the hat to R.E.M....
how did the people who 'voted' for Kennedy fare?
they got 'Johnsoned'...by 'Bush'...how oddly sexual...the word 'fucked' actually applies...'getting fucked', rather, as it is still going on...
The bills are written by lobbyists. The legislators present the bills to the President who passes them into law. The legislatorial and presidential candidates are selected for us by the wealthy fascist elite who also select judges for approval by their selected legislators. We elect candidates chosen for us by the fascists.
We don't have to vote for them. We allow ourselves to be manipulated. At some point we will have to end this fiasco. We still hold one vote a piece. They don't spend that money on elections for nothing. Ask Meg Whitman.
gardenernorcal sez: "How electable do you think someone who passes a law like that will be?"

Dunno. Lemme call up a Diebold programmer and I'll get back to you on that.
Exactly my thoughts.
I guess this creep needs to mace young women, who are trapped in nets, to compensate for his inability to maintain an erection when he is in bed with his wife.
Itsy bitsy dickie likely
Offset by the gigantic one above his neck. :)
I sincerely hope this piece of human SHIT gets met in a dark alley by a whole bunch of pissed off citizens and they teach him what citizenship is about. This asshole deserves every beat down he gets and I hope there are DOZENS. Goddamned cowardly bastard needs to be beaten until he screams like a schoolgirl, then beaten some more. This is NOT police work, this is GANG behavior. This asshole needs a SERIOUS comeuppance, and I hope it HURTS and HURTS HARD.
Goddamned maggot!
Apparently it's still "Giuliani Time" in the Big Apple.
That will accomplish nothing but a justification for more brutality. It's more effective to point out that he had no reason to act as he did. That he was in fact engaged in a criminal act. Not stoop to his level.
And sue NY City, for thuggery and violence against the citizens it should be protecting!
Exactly. Make it expensive to continue this sort of behavior. The 99 percent do have leverage folks. They may have the "money" at the moment. But we have the numbers.
These women were not prepared for this situation and could have done more to protect themselves. I use to teach professional assault response training and there is a lot you can do to protect yourself. (It doesn't mean you can't or won't get hurt in this case because you are out numbered) It means you are better prepared to defend yourself. Also, the march could have reduced chances for violence like this if it was better organized. These folks need to understand the situation they are in. It will change things.
I agree with everything you say. I've had problems with this event since it's beginning. They couldn't seem to make up their minds what it was about. But the police actions here have polarized me. I don't care how disorganized they were, they didn't deserve or was it legal to respond to them in this way.
I've been watching the live stream and they have said that they promised to provide one concrete demand that had been proving difficult to choose one of the many important issues they want represented by this protest. They are also taking personal protective steps also, they really need to be more observant and not let small groups get separated too. Those white shirts are like alligators, they need to stay away from them or be prepared what to do when one comes after them. Just some observations, and no they did not deserve that treatment.
"It's more effective to point out that he had no reason to act as he did."
I appreciate the fact that you are in favor of nonviolence, but seriously, sentences like that sound like something a third grade teacher would say.
And really, It's not more effective. It's just less violent.
"sentences like that sound like something a third grade teacher would say."
And that means? It's untrue? Invalid? Naive? I'm guessing you mean naive. You're naive if you think lying in wait for this thug and battering him to a pulp would be effective in any way. If enough third grade teachers - and the rest of us - make a big stink about this, it will certainly be more effective than a schoolyard brawl approach.
Thanks Cathy. I am not a 3rd grade teacher. Perhaps would have liked to be one at sometime during my life. But it's something needs to be said and repeated until it's listened to. I am so tired of testosterone ruling our world today. It's neither intelligent or humane. I am so tired of little "dicks" leading this world into wars and destruction.
Maggots will keep a wound clean and sterile. That cop is hardly a maggot. He is a fucking coward, and I'd like a piece of him.
My uncle was in a Japanese prison camp during WW-2, his legs have a lot of scars as they routinely used maggots to treat infection. Thousands of men died though, he is one of the few that survived.
Yep. Total gangsta' behavior. How was this different than any other drive-by shooting in the hood? Despicable! Amazing that low-lifes like this can somehow manage to weasel their way to such high levels in the pecking order!
Amazing isn't it. And an old bald guy named Tony Bologna (Baloney), pepper spraying a bunch of women that were already coralled. How butch is that? Funny thing is he didn't know about cameras in cell phones.
I for one agree with your response, in contrast to the other responses calling for "make nice" solutions. People such as this cop do not respond to "making nice." They respect one thing and one thing only and that is making sure their hide is still intact at the end of the shift. The Hell's Angels, Bandidos, Outlaws, etc. learned this long ago and quite frankly, that's why the cops do everything in their power to avoid confrontations with them.
This cop *WILL NOT* be fired or probably even get a slap on the wrist. For crying out loud, cops shoot innocent people all of the time and always get away with doing so. The only thing they fear is an equal advesary that can and will kick their ass if given the chance.
Effin pig!!!
Not true. You been watchin too much tv. Like your Sons or Archary don't you?Make you feel big! Not very productive though. Dr. King accomplished more.
I don't know what the sons of anarchy is. Peaceful demonstration, though admirable, really doesn't accomplish much. Look, the bottom line is we are trying to get back what the wealthy took from us through illegal means. They then used the wealth to re-write the laws in favor of them. Do you honestly think these people are going to give back what they have taken by asking them nicely?
"According to the NYT, the chief police spokesman, Paul Browne, said that the policeman used pepper spray "appropriately." "
That should be something for the courts to decide.
Ideally, yes, but the courts almost always take the side of the police. Small wonder: both the courts and the police serve the same corrupt, brutal authoritarian power structure.
I think with all the film available, that will be hard to maintain. Sure they're going to say it. They still don't understand technology and the fact that almost every cell phone has a camera. They think it's still 1970 and Kent State. But things have changed. You'd think Rodney King would have been a wake up call. Look at all the cell phones pointed at him from inside that barrier. He had to have known he was being filmed.
Despite film (real or digital), the police still routinely win in court.
Well, maybe the "times they be a changin"!
Not really. They're almost never convicted. If the victim is lucky, (s)he then sues the police force's municipality in civil court, where the success rate is somewhat less bad. That's what always happens in my nearest metropolis (Denver): the police are always declared not guilty, but then the city hemmorhages millions of dollars annually in lawsuit payouts. Still hasn't changed the behavior of the city, the police force, or the (pun alert!) criminal courts one bit.
If this had happened on an an episode of Law and Order a menacing figure from Internal Affairs would have rushed over to grill someone like Stabler or Benson about what had occurred during those protests. Stable or Benson would have indignantly asked the person from IA: whose side are you on, mine or the protesters? But in real life one knows that the police, like the military, tend to take care of their own by sweeping an outrage like this under the rug. Accountability is a word that is rarely in the vocabulary of either the police or the military.
Time to put NY City on the boycott list.
That's the absolute last thing to do ...its time for whoever that can to go to New York and stand in solitary with these brave young folks...they're the best of America, they should be loved, respected, supported, and most of all, they should be joined.
I don't think that's what Serious Citizen meant. I think he meant we should financially stop shopping and supporting a municipality that treats it's citizens that way.
It is getting more and more difficult for this pacifist to not want to be armed and dangerous. Having experienced police brutality at a protest in Lexington KY, I am beginning to think that JFK knew where this was all headed.
''Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.'' As of yet, I dare say, peaceful revolution may very well be an oxymoron.
That's what they would like you to do. You going to fall for that trap? Our votes are ammunition enough.
I know I know...just venting...with words only.
OMG LOL...we now have Weiner, Boner, and BOLOGNA!!! hahahahaha
I find his name ironic as well. I think the protestors should start "bologna" song.
Yeah, well, "Tony Baloney" is his full name!
Tony Baloney, Tyrant's Dream, Maced the girls and made them scream...
When the Deed made Front Page News,
All the Piggies cried, "We Been Abused!"
Yeah right. You know what bologna is made out of? Pig meat!
